Neither did Bell Helicopter, which is why there are no compromises in a 429. Luxurious, spacious and adaptable, it was designed precisely for your fast-paced, high-stakes world. With impressive range and speed, plus an astonishingly smooth and quiet ride, the 429 gets you where you need to go in comfort and style. On a Mission. The event marks a milestone in the evolution of HAC with a move to the Pan Pacific Hotel and the new Vancouver Convention Centre. There is no other convention facility in Vancouver that can accommodate our growing demand for space. The support for our convention from our valued Associates and Corporate Sponsors has been outstanding. Our trade show has grown by 50% since our last visit to Vancouver where we were bursting-at-the-seams in the Hyatt. This year we are expecting roughly 1000 individual registrants. Last year members were asking for a more extensive selection of pre and postconvention educational programs, and this year our professional development program has expanded considerably to include Risk Management, a Mountain Flying Ground School, SMS Training, an Instructor Refresher Course, a Quality Systems Auditor Course, and a Flying the Wires Course. Our Convention program has been built based on requests from our members, and I think you will agree that it is jam-packed and topical. Our industry has had its challenges in the last couple of years, but there are some promising signs that things are looking up. Operators who have survived the last couple of difficult years will emerge from the economic downturn stronger, more resilient, and in a better position to take advantage of the opportunities that are starting to re-emerge. Network, meet with your vendors, explore the trade show, but also have a drink and enjoy yourselves – I look forward to seeing you on the exhibition floor and throughout the many forums and meetings during the convention! Teri Northcott HAC Chair or visit to find or your needs. At 22 years old, Mains flew 1042 combat hours during his one-year tour in Vietnam, where he was awarded, 27 Air Medals, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. His subsequent 13,000-hour, 43-year aviation career first took him to the Australian Outback where he lived on a 1632-square-mile cattle ranch herding cattle by helicopter and delivering meat by small fixed-wing aircraft to Aboriginal settlements in the Northern Territory. Randy Mains It was while cattle mustering that he survived a fiery helicopter crash. Since then, Mains has flown seismic survey in the Bell Jet Ranger and done heli-rig work in the S-58T in Papua New Guinea; worked as a senior instructor for Bell Helicopter International in Iran; was a pioneer in HEMS in United States; helped to establish and build a national HEMS system in the Sultanate of Oman; and served as an HEMS pilot for the king of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, flying a a 20-place Bell 214ST off the king’s 500-foot yacht. Mains is currently working with Abu Dhabi Aviation, flying men and equipment to offshore oil fields in the Persian Gulf. He is also a company type rating instructor and flight examiner and operates the 412 EP flight simulator in Dubai, training and examining pilots for the company. During his time as an early HEMS pilot in the United States, Mains became a passionate advocate for HEMS pilots. In 1980, he was sent to San Diego by his company to set up University of California San Diego’s Life Flight program where he flew for five years. While he was there the program became the first single-pilot IFR HEMS program in America operating from a hospital helipad. In 1982, Mr. Mains was selected to receive the first annual Golden Hour Award, recognizing him for his contributions to furthering the helicopter air ambulance concept in America. While working full time as chief pilot for Life Flight, Mains attended San Diego State University, earning a degree in Journalism and a minor in English Creative Writing. Mains’s first published article “Life and Death—an EMS Pilot’s Viewpoint” won Rotor and Wing magazine an award for editorial excellence—the first literary award the magazine had ever won. Desperate to get the word out to stop the terrible HEMS accident rate back in America, Mains set about writing his first book, a novel entitled The Golden Hour, published in 1989. In 1989, while working in Oman, he began writing what would become his highly successful second book entitled, Dear Mom, I’m Alive—Letters Home from Blackwidow 25, detailing his one-year tour in Vietnam as a combat helicopter pilot that has now been optioned to be made into a movie. Mains has recently completed his third book, entitled Journey to the Golden Hour, a sequel to Dear Mom, I’m Alive, the story picking up where Dear Mom, I’m Alive left off. The book takes the reader on the journey Mains took beginning the first day he leaves the Army in 1971, 14 months after coming home from Vietnam, to becoming a pioneer in America’s HEMS industry—what has officially become the most dangerous job in America. 10 | HAC 2011 hacshowguide.indd 10 11-03-07 11:37 AM THE REFERENCE FOR TRANSPORT MEDICINE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES Long Range endurance for extended search patrols Maximised all weather operation, even in known icing conditions Largest cabin in its class, built-in safety and worldwide support hacshowguide.indd 11 11-03-07 11:37 AM IMPROVE SAFETY.
