Heidelberg's football team led by senior tri-captains, John Mueller, Jeff Perry, and Ken Rankin, finished the season 2-8. All three captains were recognized by All-OAC. John Mueller was named for 2nd team as a guard. Jeff Perry received Honorable Mention as defensive tackle, and Ken Rankin was named to the 1st team as a defensive end. A few records were set by the Student Princes. John Davis set a school record of forty straight extra points. He was also selected for 2nd team All-OAC. Bryce T ouhy was the first halfback to rush for 1000 yards since 1972, when Heidelberg won the national championship. Bryce also was named to 2nd team All-OAC and Honorable Mention in the Academic All-OAC. Along with good athletic performances, we also had players selected for 1st team Academic All-OAC: Eric Barnhart, Steve Ceccoli, Kevin Goodale, and Ray Onderisin. This year's team, having only three se·niors, was quite young. But after all the experience they received this year, the Student Princes should improve a great deal next season. This year was a rebuilding year for the Lady Princes with only four returning lettermen. The team was led by senior co-captains Kim Miller and Laurie Krizovski with strong support from sophomores Jeannie Michaels, Nancy Hinegardner, Meladee Hopkins, and Tammy Shaffer, along with freshmen Kelli Shannon, Arika Bleininger, Lou Ann Lasch, Sheronda Boyda and Susan Phillips. Laurie Krizovski was named Academic All-American and received the honor of 1st team Co-Side. She was the first in Heidelberg history to receive such an award. She was also named to All Ohio Athletic Conference. Sophomores Jeannie Michaels and Meladee Hopkins were named Honorable mention. Three All Academics is the most that any school had as of 1987. The team, coached by Steve Butler, played a limited schedule of seven games and competed as a junior varsity squad, although most of their opponents were varsity teams. Finishing with a record of 0-7, the team, commonly referred to as the "band-aid brigade", had to contend with many injuries, a small roster with some inexperienced players, and a difficult schedule that included Ohio State University and several other state-ranked schools. A tough defense was an important component to this year's season. Key players were halfbacks Laurie Ritzier and Julie Scaries, fullbacks Jennifer Huston and Kerri McDonald, and sweeper Larraine Huston . The defense was backed by Jennifer Edwads, a first-year player who gave an excellent performance as goalkeeper. Senior tri-captains were Larraine Huston, Kim Kleppe , and Susan Campbell. Eric Burger was once again leading scorer for the Student Princes, while goalie Matt French continued his record for saving goals. Receiving MVP was Zenon Zorij and this year's rookie was Shawn Shelton from Batavia, Ohio. The returning starters were Eric Burger, Matt French, Jim Hagler, Tony Schweppe and Zenon Zorij. The Women's Cross Country team learned that dedication and hardwork pay off as six runners were able to overcome injuries and inexperience to complete a successful 1987 season. Most Valuable Runner was Jackie Grillot; Solid Team Runner was Paula Poole; Most Inspirational Runner was Carrie Mitchell; Most Improved Runner was Caryn Alden, and Captain was !52/WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY sophomore Kim T entler. As personal records were set the team was able to go undefeated in dual meets as well as impressively finishing fourth at the Wright State Invrtational. Coach Bev Lynch and the team anxiously look towards the 1988 season . WOMEN 'S CROSS COUNTRY / 153 "First of all we would like to recognize our coach , Dr. John Kernan . The story behind the team's success rests on his shoulders. Two years ago, the team had five runners and placed last in the conference. Last year the team achieved fifth place in the OAC. His qualities as a coach recruited the largest cross country team in the conference with 21 runners. This year's team was very successful. Every man on the team contributed to the achievement of our goal to place in the top four at OAC and qualify for the NCAA regionals . The 1987 team was the first cross country team from Heidelberg to qualify for post-season competition . The varsity runners at the regionals in Wooster were spurred on by their teammates to a sixth place finish in the 28 team regional consisting of the states of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. The team finished as the fourth best Upper right--Dan Shearer and John Kashubeck dis· cuss the day 's event. Lower left··Dan Shearer concentrates on the team motto: " Pass one more! " Lower right-Tim Atkinson runs a fantastic race to 154/ MEN 'S CROSS COUNTRY team in Division III from Ohio. Our overall record was 53-35. We also competed well at the AllOhio meet. Our team was sixth out of 24 teams in the college division in the state. Sophomore Gary Smith placed tenth in the college division for AllOhio honors. We had many superb performances by individuals. At least one man in every meet and practice would stand above the others by the giving the superior effort and displaying the mental strength to excel as a runner. Our team relied on each other for strength , determination, and encouragement to reach goals. We feel that the key to success next year is for each runner to have the commitment and personal ambition to guide the team with qualities of team work, determination, encouragement, and responsibility . Many will follow, but only a few will lead." finish first for the Berg at the Great Lakes Regional. Photos by Larraine Huston . Copy by Dan Sheare r. Layout by Randy Edgington. The return of Monica Crabb, Julie Bieleski, and Julie Nicewander gave the team a foundation to work with. The combining factor of upperclassmen running for the first time plus new freshmen made the team one of the largest ever competing for Heidelberg. The team placed sixth in the OAC conference meet at Mount Union College. Barbara Moore took second in the shot put and received all-conference recognition for the effort . Monica Crabb placed fifth in the 55m hurdles . Both girls also set new school records in their respective events. The 4xl lap relay team of Lynne Polland, Julie Nice wander, Monica Crabb, and Chris Moats and the 1600m relay team of L. Polland, C. Moats, Trina Hortori , and M. Crabb placed fourth . Six of these losses were incredibly close with one run deciding the game . The highlight of the season was and eleven game win streak beginning at Wittenberg and continuing with five 2-game sweeps! The team was lead by "rookie" pitcher Laura Sullivan who led the OAC in stikeouts with fifty two on the season. The team received first-time honors this year when Sullivan was named "OAC Pitcher of the Week" and Jana Dalton (this year's MVP) was named "OAC Player of the Week" . Since there were no seniors on the team this years , the entire squad was expected to return the next year. The team sincerely felt the loss of Coach Carey Clum's guidance, motivation, and dedication as 1988 was his last season. Copy by Larrain Huston . Photos by Rebecca Henry . The 1988 Heidelberg Baseball Team ... a combination of men from all over the country striving to be the best they could be. Led by senior Larry Hall, the pitching staff supplied much of the support needed for their season. Seniors Mike Satkowiak, Rod Crabtree, and Kevin Jedneski led the infield defense and supplied some of the best offensive bats at the plate for the Berg. The outfield , led by sophomore Mike Muster , supported the team both defensively and offensively. The team itself, coached by Jeff Jenkins , worked hard to improve thier exce lle nt 1987 season. With determination and desire the 1988 'Berg Baseball Team exemplified the spirit of Heidelberg College to the best of their ability . Copy by Michael Villa . Photos by Donna Novak .
