Karlsruhe is Nottingham’s twin city in Germany and is situated close to the border with France. We have visited Karlsruhe before. It is a beautiful city and the people of Karlsruhe are extremely warm, welcoming and hospitable. They will make a huge fuss of us during our visit. KARLSRUHE 300 YEARS The History of “Ruhender Karl” (resting Karl) Why Karlsruhe is called the “fan-shaped city” 1715 Karl Wilhelm III, the proud Margrave of Baden-Durlach, rode out on a hunt to escape what had become a weary everyday life. Karl lived in a draughty old house inherited from his father. After a good bit of hunting and a hearty lunch, Karl eventually nodded off in a grove. “Karl ruhte” - Karl rested. He dreamed of a new palace, sunlit and cheery, with magnificent avenues radiating from it like sunbeams. Upon waking, Karl immediately set to making his dream a reality. Streets were built leading away from the palace, lending the city the name “fan-shaped city”. A true cosmopolitan, Karl’s motto “think global, act local” inspired him to offer tax benefits and religious freedom to all citizens of Karlsruhe, thus enticing people from across Europe to visit the city and take part in his dream. Even before its completion in 1715, Karlsruhe had become an international and cultural hot spot. We will be using Sharpes Coaches of Nottingham. They have booked our return ferries between Dover to Calais with P&O Ferries The coach is a double decker, 83 seater executive vehicle equipped with seat belts, video, and toilet. We will also be taking a large trailer for instruments. While in Europe there will be two drivers to share the driving, to adhere to European driving laws. We used this company on our last visit to Karlsruhe in 2011 The coach will collect us from Nottingham Academy and drop off at College Street on our return. (If you feel that you would like to and are able to make a voluntary contribution to the polo shirts of £5 it would be greatly appreciated) You need to be prepared with appropriate clothing for typical European summer time weather! Karlsruhe can get very hot in the summer. • Light weight water-proof coat • Music school polo shirts • Suitable clothing/head wear for hot weather • Sun Cream • Comfortable shoes for walking • Towel & soap • Night wear • Spare reeds/strings etc. • Medication • EHIC card - PASSPORTS For all under 18 UK citizens, we will be taking a group passport that Janet will then look after. This is so you do not need to worry about keeping your own passport safe. If you are 18 or a non UK passport holder , you will need to bring your own passport. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR PASSPORT IS IN DATE AND VALID! You will also need to bring an EHIC card. It is essential that you have this, in case of medical emergencies. An EHIC will enable you to access state-provided healthcare in European Economic Area (EEA) countries, at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free. It will cover your treatment until you return to the UK. You can apply for the free card at the following address. http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/about-the-ehic.aspx We will be asking for you to bring these to music school in the weeks before we go, so that we can photocopy them for emergency copies. MONEY Most meals in Germany are provided, therefore you will only need money for motorway services while travelling, lunch on Saturday and any extra drinks and snacks you want, (e.g. Das Fest) Although there may be a chance to shop, we would advise not to bring too much additional cash, as you will need to be responsible for this at all times. PERSONAL POSSESSIONS Tour members will be responsible for their own personal possessions. You are strongly advised not to bring expensive electronic equipment such as Ipads/Tablets etc. We cannot take responsibility for breakage, loss or theft of these items. INSTRUMENT INSURANCE We strongly recommend that if you own an expensive instrument, insure it either via your home and contents insurance or with a specific instrument insurance policy. Please remember to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and our website. We will be posting regular updates and photos so that you can keep in touch with what we are doing while in Germany. www.nottinghammusichub.org.uk Like us on Facebook: Nottingham Music Hub Follow us on Twitter: @nottmusichub FIRST AID Six of the accompanying staff are First Aid qualified. EMERGENCIES If an accident or incident occurs whilst on the visit, tour staff will inform parents or carers as soon as possible, via our contact back at base, Claire Dyer. She will then contact all parents directly. Therefore, it is essential we have up to date contact information for you. If there have been any changes to these, please inform us before departure. In case of emergencies where you need to contact us, we can be contacted on 07817 434601 (Claire in England) or +44 7951 331295 (Tour mobile) or at the hotel, +49 721 947630, info@thomashof.com Please ensure you have given us the correct contact information on the ‘consent form’. You will need to buy (bring a packed meal?) breakfast and lunch on the outward journey 22nd July, lunch on Saturday 25th July in Karlsruhe and on the way back to Nottingham on Monday 27th July. Drinks are provided at the Hotel. Whilst we are out during the day these must be bought separately. We estimate you will need approximately €50 to cover the cost of these meals and drinks. Note: all information on dietary requirements and food allergies has been passed onto the hostel & our hosts. In accordance with Nottingham City Council’s Visits Policy, any participants found in possession of alcohol (except for responsible use by over 18s, to be negotiated with staff) or in possession of/using drugs will be withdrawn from the tour immediately and may, in addition, be subject to laws relating to illegal drugs.
