Greetings Fellow Music Educators:
With spring finally upon us, it is a great time to both look forward and
to look back. Festivals are now mostly part of the past, and all of us are
looking forward to spring concerts, musicals trips and Music Monday.
MMEA applauds and supports each of you as you continue to provide
authentic, high quality, music making experiences to Manitobans. Keep up
the outstanding work.
Wise Voices Project
Your Manitoba Music Educators’ Association has recently completed an
advocacy project with the Coalition for Music Education in Canada called
Wise Voices for Music in Manitoba. In this exciting and collaborative venture
fifty Manitobans with a vested interest in music education participated in a
roundtable conversation about success, gaps, and needs for future growth in
music education. Thank you to all participants. The conversations have been
valuable at helping MMEA set direction for the future. The event received
important sponsorship from estate of George Douglas (through the Coalition
for Music Education) and the Association of Music Educators in Manitoba. A
big shout out to Dorothy Dyck and the students from Maples Collegiate for
starting our day with wonderful music making.
Music Monday – May 5th
Manitoba has a music education system that is the envy of many other
provinces and regions. I urge all music educators at all levels to continue to
consider music advocacy as an important part in maintaining and enhancing
the high quality of the experience we are providing Manitoba students. Music
Monday, May 5th 2014, is one way to continue to keep the importance of
music education in the awareness of our governments, administrators,
colleagues, students and communities.
As most of you know, Manitoba continues to have significant
involvement in Music Monday. As part of our ongoing support of this project,
we ask that you register now. The exciting opportunity to share musicmaking with the schools across the country and with former ISS Commander
Chris Hadfield is added incentive.

Music Month
A huge thank you to our MMEA Music Month team of Leanne Jensen,
Helen Litz and the Manitoba Education team of Beryl Peters and Julie
Mongeon-ferré for their outstanding work on Music Month in Manitoba.
Congratulations to all the Manitoba music educators for bringing their groups
to the Legislature for these performances. This important event is providing
an excellent advocacy opportunity as music educators interact with our
government members and leaders.
Curriculum and Course Development – High School Music.
Dialogue with Manitoba Education surrounding curriculum
frameworks and course development continues to be a high in priority for
MMEA.
• The Grade 9-12 Music Curriculum Frameworks will be posted online
following final revisions.
• Voluntary implementation will be extended through 2014-2015 and
system-wide implementation is targeted for September 2015.
• A guide for the development of Grades 9-12 Music Education courses
and the use of the new course codes will be available to support
schools and educators as they transition to new frame-works based
courses.
• For 2014-2015 schools may choose to use old, existing codes or
transition to new arts education codes.
• An Administrator’s handbook, which MMEA requested in our January
meeting with Education Minister James Allum, will be developed to
support implementation of the curriculum frameworks and courses.
• Manitoba Education will be allowing multiple music education
experiences to be part of the high school programming. It is
anticipated that up to 8 full music courses can be made available to
each student at each grade level.

Spring is " finally" here….. No doubt we’re all looking forward to enjoying some
warmer weather. It has been a long, cold winter!
As your SAGE Chairperson, both my committee and myself have been working
diligently to put together a well “orchestrated” October 24th, 2014 Music
Conference. We have finalized the session topics along with the clinicians and
know that each of you will be provided with a wonderful day of professional
learning.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. John Feierabend. Dr. Feierabend is considered
one of the leading authorities on music and movement development in early
childhood. He is Professor of Music and the Director of Music Education at The
Hartt School, University of Hartford. Dr. Feierabend will also be presenting
workshops on vocal and movement development as well as steps to music literacy
using conversational solfege. Currently, Jeffrey Agrell is associate professor at the
University of Iowa School of Music. He is keenly interested in bringing creativity
to music education and performance. Jeffrey's sessions will focus on the art of
improvisation through games and exercises. Steve Houghton Professor of
Percussion and Jazz at Indiana University will share his percussion/jazz expertise
with teachers at this year's conference. David Newell will offer varied sessions
from classroom management to improving intonation and expressive phrasing in
the school band. Melanie DeMore singer/composer, choral conductor and vocal
activist will focus on vocal pedagogy and technical exercises invaluable to the
choral director. Kris Olson will be presenting Orff workshops with the focus being
on process and movement integration. To add to this fine array of presenters we
have many of our local teachers who have agreed to present and share on various
topics at this year’s conference.
These are just a few of the presenters and sessions that each of you will have an
opportunity to partake in.
I look forward to seeing you on Friday, October 24th, 2014 at Mennonite
Brethren Collegiate Institute, 180 Riverton Avenue, Winnipeg.

Podium 2014, Canada’s national choral conference, takes place May 15-18 in Halifax,
Nova Scotia.
The deadline for the Frances Seaton Choral Composition Competition is
May 30, 2014. Information is available on our website. www.manitobasings.org
The deadline for the Bert Kroeker Scholarship Fund is May 30. This scholarship is
awarded to a student pursuing studies in choral music education.
Seniors Sing! will be held on Tuesday, May 6th at Sturgeon Creek United Church.
Participating choirs include: Sturgeon Creek United Church Choir, Joie de Vivre,
Winkler Seniors Choir, the Winnipeg Seniors Choral Society, the Winnipeg German
Club Choir and the Good Neighbours Choristers. Each choir will perform individually
and will perform together as a massed choir under the direction of Trygve John
Ringereide. Tell your friends about this event!
Singathon will be held May 31st at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) at
the Forks. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will go continuously until 6:00 p.m. More
details will be available shortly on our website. We’d like to encourage a toonie toss
with each performing group and admission will be $5 as well as donations being accepted
at the venue and on CanadaHelps.org. It’s a fundraising event for MCA as well as a
funraising event!

The next general meeting of the MCGA will take place during the week of June 16.

Creative Music Festival
The annual MCGA Creative Music Festival will take place on June 11 at Tec Voc High
School in Winnipeg. This is a great opportunity for students to perform original
compositions in a supportive venue. All students of MCGA members are welcome. All
instruments/voices are eligible to perform in this “unplugged” setting.
Recent Celebrations
The MCGA facilitated the guitar ensemble day of the Winnipeg Music Festival on March
13. It was a full, successful day and a great experience for both the students and
teachers involved.
Congratulations to all students and teachers involved in Juno week. All groups
performing and those featured in the media provided great representation of guitar
programs throughout the province.

The MCGA is offering a scholarship to a U of M guitar major entering the education
stream. The purpose of this award is to support a student in the Bachelor of

MOC PLAY! CELEBRATION
As part of a nation-wide celebration of Carl Orff Canada, you and your ensemble are invited to come out and play a vital
role in the advocacy of music education, specifically the Orff approach, in Manitoba. Hosted by Chrissy Troy of Virgin
Radio, your ensemble will have 15-20 minutes to perform at the Forks. We will have a wide variety of audience
members, which may include dignitaries and media. Friends and families of your students are more than welcome to
attend!

Saturday, April 26th, join us for the fourth annual BU CLARINET FESTIVAL
featuring prolific recording artist and Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Principal
Clarinetist Joaquin Valdepeñas. This year’s festival also welcomes acclaimed guest
artist Michelle Goddard (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra).

questions/concerns. Joaquin Valdepeñas, clarinet, a prolific recording artist, has recently won a second Juno Award for
his recording "Levant" with his Amici Chamber Ensemble and his latest CD with the ARC
Ensemble on the Chandos Label was released in June and features the Clarinet Quintet of Paul
Ben-Haim. Mr. Valdepeñas was a Grammy Award nominee two years in a row in the chamber
music category—the latest nomination for a recording featuring the music of Julius Rontgen on
Sony BMG. He has also won a Juno award for best classical recording (for the Jacques Hetu
Concerto). Mr. Valdepeñas is principal clarinet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and also
appears as soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. He has performed at international festivals
including Banff, Casals, Curitiba Brazil, Marlboro, Nagano Japan, and Korea’s Great Mountains
Music Festival and has collaborated with the American, Calder, Emerson, Muir, Orion, St.
Lawrence, Takács, Ying, and Zemlinsky string quartets, as well as the Chamber Music Society of
Lincoln Center and The International Sejong Soloists. Mr. Valdepeñas made his European debut
with the BBC Welsh Symphony and has recorded the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the English
Chamber Orchestra. He has recorded extensively for CBC, Centrediscs, Naxos, RCA, Sony, and
Summit and was featured in a PBS documentary about the Aspen Music Festival and School. Mr.
Valdepeñas is a faculty member of the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Last season his love of chamber music took him to performances at Wigmore Hall in London and
The Royal Concertgbeouw Hall in Amsterdam.

SUBMISSIONS FOR MUSICOUNTS TD COMMUNITY MUSIC GRANTS
NOW BEING ACCEPTED
$200,000 IN GRANTS TO BE AWARDED
Toronto, ON - MusiCounts and TD Bank Group are working together for the
second year in a row with the MusiCounts TD Community Music Grants
program. Now accepting submissions, this program is designed specifically to
provide transformative opportunities for youth in underserved communities
across Canada. MusiCounts TD Community Music Grants help provide musical
instruments and equipment to community centres, after-school programs and
other non-profit organizations serving local communities from coast to coast.
"Last year, we were excited to be able to expand MusiCounts' programming
beyond the classroom for the first time, which wouldn't have been possible
without TD's support," says Allan Reid, Director, MusiCounts. "We were moved
by the unique stories of the many programs that applied for funding. The
phenomenal work being done by these programs and the work that they are
doing with youth highlights the need that exists on a national level for the funding
provided through the MusiCounts TD Community Music Grants."
Grant applications are being accepted beginning February 26, 2014 at
www.musicounts.ca, with a submission deadline of May 9th, 2014. The grants
will be distributed in allotments up to $25,000 totalling $200,000. The
announcement of the grant recipients will take place in July, 2014.
"We are thrilled to support MusiCounts and this program, which gives young
people the opportunity to be exposed to music and to be involved in music
education," says Alan Convery, Senior Manager, Community Relations, TD Bank
Group. "With over 120 applications received in the inaugural year of the program
last year, it is evident that music makes an incredible impact on everyone, and
this program makes it possible for more organizations to continue making an
impact on our youth."
Playing an integral role in the program is Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew,
who inspired the initiative with his intent to get involved with creating support for
programs serving at-risk youth that may not be exposed to music education and
discovery through their schools with MusiCounts. Last year, Drew participated in
the grant announcement presentation, collaborating with recipients at SKETCH
Working Arts Program on two original compositions that he and the group
created entitled, Need a Little More Time and This That This.
"Kids today now more than ever need to make an actual connection. They need
to find a way to make an effort towards an opportunity that can evoke passion.
Music does exactly this," said Drew. "Last year was a success and brought a lot
of community centres the chance to provide programs with musical instruments.
We are doing it again. Send in your applications and take advantage of making a
change for the ones who deserve it."
Last year, SKETCH Working Arts Program located in the Parkdale neighborhood
of Toronto received $20,000 to purchase recording studio equipment for the
creation of a mobile recording / production studio that can be taken to various
priority neighborhoods across the city. In total, the MusiCounts TD Community
Music Grants program received over 120 applications in 2013, amassing
$200,000 worth of grants that were given to 15 selected recipients.

MusiCounts TD Community Music Grants are open to non-profit organizations
that operate outside of Provincial Departments of Education. Both non-profit
and/or registered charitable organizations with pre-existing music programs
and/or non-profit organizations that want to introduce a music program to
complement their current programming are also eligible for grant consideration.

Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and the Canadian Country
Music Association (CCMA) is helping to keep music alive in schools across
Canada. MusiCounts' mission is to ensure that children in Canada, regardless of
socio-economic circumstances or cultural background, have access to music
programs through their schools. MusiCounts includes Band Aid musical

WINNIPEG, MB - Today in Winnipeg, MusiCounts presented two local schools,
Maples Collegiate and Lakewood School with their Band Aid Grants,
consisting of $10,000 worth of musical instruments for each school. Awardwinning rockers The Trews, unveiled the newly purchased instruments to the
students and performed a three-song acoustic set which included their new
single "What's Fair Is Fair" from their upcoming self-titled album.
"We started our band in high school, which was just a couple of years ago," joked
Colin MacDonald. "So we couldn't be more thrilled to be here today working
alongside an organization that is helping so many students across the country to
achieve their dreams in such a significant way."
MusiCounts also celebrated the over $1,000,000 contributed to date by SiriusXM
Canada. At the ceremony, SiriusXM Canada's Andréanne Sasseville made
surprise announcement of an additional $100,000 that will be contributed to
MusiCounts programs in 2014.
"We are very proud to be closely linked to the continued support that MusiCounts
provides to music education," said Andréanne Sasseville, Director, Talent and
Industry Relations, SiriusXM Canada. "Helping to shape the cultural fabric of the
country starts with ongoing initiatives that develop our up-and-coming talent and
we're excited to work with MusiCounts to help us realize a healthy future of music
in Canada."
The presentation featured special speakers The Honourable Shelly Glover,
Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Allan Reid, Director,
MusiCounts.
"MusiCounts has grown to unprecedented levels in recent years, continuing to
expand our reach and impact through programs like the Band Aid Grants," says
Allan Reid, Director, MusiCounts. "We have been able to impact hundreds of
school communities from coast to coast and put instruments into the hands of
hundreds of thousands of students. We would not have seen this kind of success
without the incredibly generous support of our sponsors like SiriusXM Canada."
This year, MusiCounts has awarded over $600,000 to 70 schools nationwide with
Band Aid Grants. In the province of Manitoba to date, over $475,000 has been
provided to music programs, including this year's Teacher of the Year Award.

About The Trews
With 14 Top 10 singles at Rock radio (two #1's) and two Gold-certified albums
(House Of Ill Fame, Den Of Thieves), The Trews have cemented themselves as
one of Canada's most distinguished Rock bands. Their debut release, House Of
Ill Fame (2003) was a huge success. The album's second single, "Not Ready To
Go," hit #1 at Rock radio and was named the Most Played song of 2004 in that
format. The Trews earned their second #1 at Rock radio for "Yearning," from
their sophomore album Den Of Thieves in 2005. The foursome has garnered
multiple East Coast Music Awards, won the 2009 8th Annual Independent Music

WINNIPEG, MB - Shocked and amazed are some of the many words to describe
the reaction of local Winnipeg music teacher Jeff Kula of River East Collegiate
(REC) as MusiCounts presented him with the 2014 MusiCounts Teacher of
the Year Award at a surprise assembly today. Announced by Allan Reid,
Director, MusiCounts, to an auditorium filled with students and faculty, the award
was officially presented by 2014 JUNO Award Country Album of the Year
nominee, Gord Bamford.
The MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award recognizes the incredible, dedicated
and hard-working music teachers in Canada who encourage music education for
many young Canadians.
Sponsored by the Gord Bamford Charitable Foundation this year, Bamford was
on-hand to present the award and additionally announce a generous contribution
of $100,000 that will be given to MusiCounts programs over the next three years.
"If I wouldn't have started music at a young age, and started in school, I probably
wouldn't be where I'm at today," says Bamford. "It creates dreams. It's a dream I
eventually started chasing, and it's come true for me. It all started in grade four
and I have my teacher to thank for that. I want to make a difference, and giving
back is the most rewarding thing that I've been able to do."
For Kula, the award recognizes his 27-year career, 15 of which have been spent
as the sole full-time Instrumental Music Director at REC. Of the 950 students who
attend the collegiate, 20% are enrolled in the music program due to his
leadership, reputation and ability to motivate students to produce music. Over the
years, he has established a variety of instrumental groups including concert
band, jazz percussion ensembles and small chamber groups. Beyond the
already extensive hours that his music program demands, he is extremely
generous with his time, often accompanying young players to the music store on
weekends to help them get mouthpieces and driving forgotten instruments to
students' homes around the city. Known as an innovator that inspires the next
generation of musicians, Kula has implemented student-produced videos and art
as part of band performances, clinics with veteran session players, and
placement in competitions throughout North America for students to participate
in.
In honour of Kula's dedication, he will receive $10,000, a solid crystal JUNO
Award statuette, plus VIP treatment throughout JUNO Week including
recognition at the Chairman's Reception, attending the JUNO Gala Dinner &
Awards and a walk on the red carpet at the 2014 JUNO Awards Broadcast. An
additional $10,000 contribution will be made to River East Collegiate's music
program.
"Each year we receive a number of nominations on behalf of teachers who
impact school communities across Canada," says Allan Reid, Director,
MusiCounts. "Choosing the one recipient of this annual award is never easy, but
Jeff Kula's commitment to his students and how he goes above and beyond the
call of duty of a music teacher exemplifies the reason that we established this
award to begin with."

Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman have inspired a global movement in
music education. Their approach encourages musical creativity based
upon solid pedagogical principles and is structured on a sequential
development of knowledge and skills. The Orff approach is not a
method, but rather a process that relies on imaginative teachers who
are first and foremost confident and creative musicians! The threelevel Orff Certification Program at the University of Manitoba offers
an intensive and exciting course of comprehensive instruction in Orff
philosophy, pedagogy, orchestration and improvisation. As well as
daily instruction in Basic Orff, particular attention is given to in-depth
study of choral techniques, movement and recorder.

Program of Study
Level I offers a seven-hour daily program which includes three hours
of Basic Orff and Aural Skills, as well as an hour each of movement,
recorder, choral techniques, and study-ensemble. Instruction in Level I
is designed to lay a foundation in Orff techniques, rhythmic and melodic
training. Focus in Level I is on the pentatonic scale, simple bordun, basic
movement instruction, choral development at the primary level, and the
introduction of the soprano recorder. Combined warm-ups with students
in all levels of the program will be offered during the course.
** Prerequisite: a firm and recent knowledge of music rudiments at least
equivalent to Theory 4 (Conservatory Canada) or Advanced Rudiments
(previously Grade 2 RCM). Practical experience on an instrument is very
important.
** Enrolment is limited to 30 students.
Level II includes a review of Level I skills and involves further exploration of Orff theory and pedagogy. Materials and activities are designed
to further the musical growth of the participants and to encourage study
of lesson planning and curriculum for the elementary years. Recorder
classes include the study of both the soprano and alto recorders. Combined warm-ups with students in all levels of the program will be offered
during the course.
** Prerequisite: Grade of C+ or better in Level I (U of M) plus consent of the
instructors.
