18. Illumination Quilt: How Does God’s Light Shine Through?
Value: Priceless
2nd Grade Quilt Project
This quilt is the second in a series capturing the art around the St. Cecilia campus. It is a fusion of a stained-glass
window with a class assignment completed by the 2014-2015 second grade class. The street view of the Parish
Center window is unremarkable because the background illumination is dim, making the colors very dark. But from
the interior looking out, sunlight brings the brilliant colors and subtle textures of this remarkable window to life.
The damaged pane near the bottom subtracts nothing from its intensity. As work on the round window progressed,
the kids pondered the question of how God’s light shone through them. The dual personality of this window was a
perfect metaphor for how we all transform when we allow that Light to illuminate us and cast our individual virtues
outward to others - despite our damaged panes, or perhaps more beautiful because of them. Their responses to that
question were compiled into a cross on the reverse.
The pattern was prepared using photography by Tony Halford and printed by WH Pacific, Inc. The patterns were
designed and executed by Anita Cate Smyth with assistance from fiber artist Hilde van de Walle Morin. The cross
is the work of the 2nd grade class and their teachers, Mrs. Tori Manning, and Mrs. Brown.
Thanks to: Anita & Michael Smyth and the 2nd Grade Class
