"Millennials are just
so lazy!"
of the month
Name: Sarah Dowidat │Hometown: Fond du Lac
Where do you work, what do you do and what do
you like most about it? I'm currently the marketing
consultant at Open Road Harley-Davidson. I enjoy
the variety, fun and challenge that each day brings.
I love to work with people and am passionate about
the Harley-Davidson lifestyle.
Who or what is your source of professional
inspiration? I've always believed in being a life-long
learner. Take a few moments of each day or week
to stay current on professional topics that interest
you most. I'm also a firm believer in surrounding
yourself with the people who are where you want to
be professionally.
Where do you see Fond du Lac in 5 years? I see
today's young professionals as Fond du Lac's future.
We have a huge opportunity to make a difference in
our own community not only today but in the future. I
believe that opportunities for young professionals will
continue to increase not only professionally, but in all
aspects of life.
(Read more at www.ypfdl.org.)
We're sick of hearing this... and we imagine
that you are too. Rather than just roll our eyes at this
sentiment we decided it was time for Wisconsin young
professionals to take a stand – enter YPWeek!
YPWeek founded in 2012 by NEWaukee (a
Milwaukee area young professionals (YP) network),
is a weeklong series of events focusing on discovery,
adventure and meaningful conversations about the
issues that matter to young professionals in the area.
In its fourth year, YPWeek is expanding across the
state of Wisconsin in an effort to unite, excite and
strengthen YPs with all that Wisconsin has to offer!
YPWeek 2015 is organized by eight YP networks,
including the Young Professionals of Fond du Lac
(YPF); YPWeek will feature 80+ events between April
11th and 18th! For a complete listing of events and
opportunities visit www.ypweek.com.
“We’re excited to be a part of YPWeek 2015 and
bring attention to the great programming and services
provided by YPF and available in Fond du Lac,” stated
Amy Jessen, 2015 YPF president. "In Fond du Lac
alone there will be eight events in eight days for YPs
and the entire community to take part in."
(YPWeek events continued on page 3.)
AC endorses 3 for City Council
ON
APRIL 7 th!
VOTE
Catherine Block
Greg Giles
The Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce Board of
Directors has endorsed three candidates for the April 7 Fond du
Lac City Council election. Representing over 830 businesses in
the greater Fond du Lac area, the AC Board is recommending
incumbents Catherine Block and Greg Giles and newcomer Brian
Kolstad.
Block is a self-employed owner of and attorney for Block Law
Office, LLC and has been a resident of Fond du Lac for eight years.
She currently serves on the Fond du Lac City Council, a position she
has held since 2013. Giles is the executive director and CEO of the
Fond du Lac Family YMCA and has been a resident of Fond du Lac
for 12 years. He currently serves on the Fond du Lac City Council,
a position he has held since 2014. Kolstad is a senior application
developer with wisnet.com, LLC and has been a resident of Fond du
Lac for 40 years.
Brian Kolstad
“We are confident that these are the best candidates to
represent the business community,” explained AC president and
CEO, Joe Reitemeier. “These individuals have proven themselves
to have the greatest understanding of the issues facing Fond du Lac,
as well as what is needed to ensure financial security and economic
growth for the city.”
The AC Board created an ad hoc committee of local business
leaders to interview City Council candidates. The committee invited
each of the five candidates to sit down for an in-depth interview.
Candidates sat for one-hour interviews and were asked identical
questions on issues important to commerce. Based on the interviews
there are three candidates who demonstrated the leadership,
knowledge and commitment to the community needed to serve the
city of Fond du Lac. The committee came to its conclusions and the
Board of Directors adopted their recommendations.

Congratulations, you’re a supervisor! Now what?
You need the Supervisory Skills Series beginning July 21, 2015.
Trying to find ways to motivate your work unit? Desperate to keep
business running smoothly? Don’t take chances with your people and
productivity! It’s important not to become the supervisor that drives
away needed talent or doesn’t develop staff skills to be successful in
this dynamic, global marketplace.
Take the struggle and worry away with the Supervisory Skills
Series (SSS)! Others have attended SSS before you and have learned
what works and what doesn’t. Get started today!
The Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce, in partnership
with D.L. Podeszwa & Associates, has provided Supervisory Skills
Series (SSS) for more than 21 years and it’s just what you need to be
a successful leader without undue stress and aggravation for you and
your workers.
This 13-month leadership development series covers such
topics as: Leadership Style and Versatility, Communication, Conflict,
Collaboration, Time Management, Running Effective Teams, Creativity
and Innovation, Negotiation Skills, Project Management, Hiring,
On-Boarding, Training, Coaching, Problem Solving and Work Unit
Business Performance Measurement.
SSS emphasizes training that’s practical, informative, educational
and readily applicable. These workshops gather supervisors from
different organizations and often teach them that the problems they
encounter are not always unique to their business, but rather common
people working with people issues.
Instructors Dave and Adam Podeszwa have been in the
leadership development business for more than 30 years. They have
trained leaders across North America and over 600 in Fond du Lac
alone.
To maximize instructor/student ratios, SSS space is limited. Don’t
wait! Contact Gerrie Andrew at the AC now at (920) 921-9500 or
gerriea@fdlac.com for more information and enrollment forms.
A taste of success for Fond du Lac area youth!
Community-wide Lemonade Day set for May 2, 2015
Turning lemons into lemonade is
often thought of as a solution for a sticky
situation. But for Fond du Lac area youth,
it’s a challenge being met with excitement
and creativity. On Saturday, May 2, 2015
the Fond du Lac area will be getting a taste
of success as nearly 200 kids participate in
the community’s inaugural Lemonade Day
celebration.
Lemonade Day, powered by Google,
is a project-based learning opportunity
that teaches students how to start, own
and operate their own small business: a
lemonade stand. The nationwide program
helps kids set up successful stands with
the assistance of adult mentors. It teaches
children fundamental skills related to planning,
strategic thinking, financial management,
sales, marketing, business management and
community partnership. For more information
visit www.fonddulacarea.lemonadeday.org or
contact the Fond du Lac Area Association of
Commerce at (920) 921-9500.
“There are so many positive
teaching opportunities that Lemonade
Day brings to kids including teamwork,
philanthropy, creativity, problem solving
and communication,” explained Lemonade
Day co-chair Brenda Schaefer, instructor at
Moraine Park Technical College.
The program entails 14 curriculum
lessons to be taught to assist children in
developing their business plans. A steering
committee is in place to help guide the
activities and help facilitate partnerships
between students and area businesses.
Students will be guided by a caring adult,
to develop their plan, apply for a loan for
product (if necessary) from the “bank”,
select a business to partner with and plan
for launch on Lemonade Day, which will be
the first Saturday in May. On that date in
May, students will open and operate their
Lemonade “business”, open to the public.
Through the live experience, students will be
able to understand the impact of the decisions
they made along the way in developing their
plan. They earn real money and use 100% of
their profit to spend, save and share based on
their goals.
“I’m excited to learn about how
businesses make profits and what decisions
will go into making a stand,” said Camryn
Stueber, Lemonade Day participant and 5th
grader at Lakeshore Elementary.
Lemonade Day 2015 is a pilot program
to include the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du
Lac afterschool program, St. Mary's Springs
Academy, WELS Lutheran elementary
schools, Lomira School District and select
Fond du Lac public schools partnering with
Moraine Park Technical College.
Lemonade Day is a program of Fond
du Lac Works, a division of the Fond du Lac
Area Association of Commerce. The mission
of Fond du Lac Works is to recruit, retain and
develop a quality workforce. By engaging
students of all ages, the next generation will
be better prepared to attend a post-secondary
institution that aligns with a career interest
and ultimately increase the percentage of
students that graduate with a degree needed
by area businesses and industry. For more
information visit www.fdlworks.com.
“Lemonade Day is another perfect
example of how Fond du Lac Works is helping
to drive partnerships between business and
education,” stated Lemonade Day co-chair
Alan Hathaway, president of BrownBoots
Interactive. “Partnering community
businesses with area youth is a win-win for
us all.”

Back to school with Project G.R.I.L.L.
When is the last time you had the opportunity to go back to
high school for something other than a child or grandchild’s event or
sporting activity? For some of us it has been long time. However,
for those business representatives involved in Project G.R.I.L.L. it’s
a regular occurrence, especially during this time of year! Known as
the “Tour of Schools”, March provides a time for the Project G.R.I.L.L.
manufacturing partners to collectively visit all participating high schools.
This is the chance for students to deliver a short presentation
to business professionals, discuss what they have learned to date,
what were some of the problems encountered and how were solutions
found. Additionally, these tours allow students to show their project to
date.
The benefits of the Tour of Schools are many – both for students
and for the business partners. First, it allows students to bounce ideas
off the manufacturing partners that they are not working with during
the year. Second, students hone presentation skills that they may
not otherwise get to practice. Third, it is a great time for networking
with potential employers after graduation. And finally, manufacturers
get a sense of the needs of education by being in the labs and briefly
experiencing the classroom environment. All of these are every bit as
important as the grill itself.
Students at Laconia High School show
their Project G.R.I.L.L. progress.
Project G.R.I.L.L. is now in its seventh year and it just keeps
getting better. This critical workforce development program puts local
manufacturers together with area high school tech ed students on
a year-long project to design and build a working charcoal grill from
scratch. This year, the program includes nine partnerships spanning
Fond du Lac and Dodge County schools along with leading companies
in the greater Fond du Lac area. Partnerships for the 2014-15 year are:
Campbellsport High School – Fives Giddings & Lewis
Fond du Lac High School – Kondex Corporation
Horace Mann High School – Nemesis Metals
Laconia High School – Agromatic
Lomira High School – Mid-States Aluminum Corp.
MPTC (Ripon High School, St. Mary's Springs Academy and
Fondy Central) – Sadoff Iron & Metal

MEMBER NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dental Associates announces results of
Children's Dental Health Month
Sadoff Iron & Metal announces new recycling
services available to the community
As part of Children’s Dental Health Month in February, Dental
Associates’ Fond du Lac at 545 E Johnson Street taught 651 area
youngsters how to care for their teeth. In dental terms, that’s a total of
13,020 very important baby and permanent teeth. Altogether Dental
Associates’ clinics throughout Wisconsin reached 11,600 youngsters.
Dental assistants from the company’s practices in Fond du Lac,
Green Bay, Appleton, Greenville, Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Franklin,
Sturtevant and Kenosha visited daycare centers, YMCAs, preschools
and elementary schools throughout the state to teach children the
importance of dental health and show them how to properly take care
of their teeth. As part of the visits, each child received a dental kit that
included a new toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and dental information.
During the classroom talks and presentations, dental assistants
from Dental Associates showed children the keys to oral health –
brushing twice a day for at least two minutes, flossing and seeing a
dentist twice a year for checkups. They also addressed the importance
of a healthy diet and encouraged youngsters to avoid sugary snacks
and sweet drinks like juice and soda since those products simply coat
teeth with sugar. The students learned that fruits, vegetables, water
and milk are the best choices. For more information regarding Dental
Associates, visit www.dentalassociates.com.
