4The key for Canisius this season has been racing to a fast start.
4The Griffs are 2-0-1 during the 2008 season when scoring first. When the opposition tallies
the first goal, Canisius is 0-6-0. In addition, the Griffs are 2-0-1 when leading at halftime
and are 0-6-0 when tied or trailing at the half.
4When starting slow, the Griffs have responded and can climb back initially. Canisius has
twice rallied from down two goals to knot a game. However, both times the opponent
scored a late goal to ruin the Canisius rally.
HOME SWEET HOME
4The Demske Sports Complex is the place to be for the Griffs this season. Canisius will
welcome 10 opponents to Buffalo this season, tied for the most in school history. The
Griffs also hosted 10 games during the 1999 season.
4The Griffs went 4-2-0 at home during the 2007 campaign. Canisius’ four home victories
are tied for the third-most in school history. However, Canisius is 0-2-1 at home to begin
the 2008 campaign.
4The Demske Sports Complex will have a new look to it this season. The home of the
soccer team had its AstroTurf removed and was replaced by Field Turf during the summer.

What is a Griffin?
The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has
the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail
and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly
and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of
a lion.
Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and
vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have
mastery of both the land and sky.
They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws
into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins
would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to
become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away.

4The spread offense is working for the Griffs as Canisius currently ranks third in the MAAC with
1.67 goals per game.
GONZALEZ ADDS IMMEDIATE IMPACT TO GRIFFS
4Junior college transfer Victor Gonzalez has had an immediate impact on the Griffs’ success this
season.
4Gonzalez ranks second on the team with seven points, two goals and three assists.
4Gonzalez has twice posted three points in a game this season. The rookie first completed the
task against Bucknell, nearly helping the Griffs rally from a three-goal deficit with 13 minutes
remaining. He then duplicated the feat against Quinnipiac.
4Gonzalez is in his first season with Canisius after spending the previous two seasons at Genesee
Community College.
GRIFFS WIN UB FALL CLASSIC
4Canisius swept a pair of games this past weekend at the UB Fall Classic, defeating Detroit, 3-1,
and Wright State, 5-1. The Griffs and the host Bulls both finished the tournament 2-0-0 but the
Griffs were declared champions by virtue of a better goal differential.
4Junior Alan McGreal led the Griffs’ offense during the tournament, posting nine points on
three goals and three assists. For his effort, McGreal picked up Offensive MVP honors. He
matched a career high with five points on two goals and an assist in the opener against Detroit,
contributing on all three of Canisius’ goals in the victory. Against Wright State, the junior
recorded a goal and two assists.
4Four other Griffs joined McGreal on the All-Tournament Team. Senior Brian Patterson, junior
Victor Gonzalez, sophomore Hector Rodriguez and redshirt freshman goalie Luke Seymour
were all earned the honor after helping the Griffs to the title.
DON’T COUNT THE GRIFFS OUT
4One thing that Canisius has proved this year is that no lead will be safe against the Griffs.
4Canisius has twice rallied from down at least two goals to tie a game.
4Canisius trailed Bucknell by three scores, 4-1, with less than 13 minutes remaining in the
contest. However, the Griffs tallied three goals in less than five minutes of play to knot the score
at four.
4The three goals in a five-minute span was the first for the Griffs under head coach Jim Hesch. In
fact, Canisius has scored only two goals in five minutes four times in the seven-plus years span
under Hesch.
4The Griffs also rallied from a 2-0 deficit to knot the game against Quinnipiac.
4The comebacks, however, both fell just short. Bucknell tallied a goal with just 4:28 left to earn
the 5-4 victory and Quinnipiac also scored late to win, 3-2.
EXPERIENCE MATTERS
4When looking for an experienced player, the Griffs need to look no farther than senior forward
Chris Carpenter.
4Carpenter has played in 61 career games, 16 games more than the second-most experience
Griffs (Alan McGreal and Adam Studniarek).
4The Lockport, N.Y. native has totaled 13 points on six goals and an assist during his career,
including four goals during his junior campaign. Carpenter scored the game-winning goal
against Iona to lead the Griffs to a MAAC Quarterfinal victory.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES
4Junior Alan McGreal earned Preseason All-MAAC honors for the second-straight year.
4McGreal was named to the All-MAAC First Team last season after leading the conference with
33 points and nine assists to go along with 12 goals.
4As a team, Canisius was selected to finish fourth in the MAAC standings.

Jim Hesch
Head Coach • Eighth Season
38-83-14/24-34-5 MAAC
The winningest coach in school history, Jim Hesch begins his
eighth season at the helm of the Canisius College men’s soccer
team. During his tenure, the Golden Griffin soccer program has
seen steady signs of improvement over the last seven seasons,
capped by eight overall wins and five conference victories in
2007, the most in the program’s Division I history.
The third-longest tenured head coach in the MAAC, Hesch became the program’s
winningest coach when the Golden Griffins defeated Marist by a score of 3-2 at home Oct.
12, 2007. The 2007 season also saw Canisius win the second MAAC Tournament game in
school history as the Blue and Gold advanced to the conference tournament’s semifinal
round for the second time in school history.
Individual accolades have become common under Hesch during the past seven season.
He has guided six players to be named to the All-MAAC Team. Fabien Lewis was named
the league’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, while Alan McGreal earned the
conference’s Rookie of the Year award in 2006 before being honored as an all-league first
team selection after last season. In addition, two MAAC New York Lottery Men’s Soccer
Scholar Athletes of the Year came from Canisius as Anthony Palmiero earned the honor
in 2003 and Brian Brehm won the award in 2004. Hesch owns a career coaching record of
36-77-13.
The Syracuse, N.Y., native played in the National Professional Indoor Soccer League from
1995-2002, which included a stint with the Buffalo Blizzard from 1999-2000. In 2000, Hesch
played in 38 games and tallied 21 goals and 14 assists. He played with the Harrisburg
Heat from 1996-99 and was named an NPSL All-Star in the 1997-98 season after posting
119 points, the eighth-best
single-season total in Heat
history. In 2002, Hesch captured
a Major Indoor Soccer League
Championship as a member of
the Philadelphia Kixx, tallying 36
points in 28 games.
As a collegiate player, Hesch won
a national championship with
Southern Connecticut University
in 1990 before transferring to
Cortland State, where he played
from 1991-93 and was named
a first-team All-American. He
earned his bachelor’s degree in
physical education in 1994.
He owns a USSF A coaching
license and is the president of the
newly-formed Black Watch - New
York West Premiere Soccer Club.
Hesch and his wife, Linda, reside
in Amherst with their daughter,
Ryan, and son, Connor. Jim’s
brother, Dave Hesch, is the
associate head coach at crosstown rival the University at
Buffalo.
