A word from the Principal….. Hello Everyone! Athletics day was spectacular! Thanks to Hilary Morris for once again organising a fantastic athletics day for our school! The children all participated with great enthusiasm and enthusiastically supported each other all the way. At Kallista Primary we all value: Congratulations to the O’Donohue house team for their win! It was a tough competition! Well done also to all the house captains and vice captains who worked so well together to organise the day with Mrs Morris. It was a terrific learning experience for them and they did a wonderful job leading their teams. Enrolments and Classes for 2016 This is our final call out to parents regarding enrolments at our school. If you know of anyone looking to enrol at our school for 2016, could you please ask them to give me a call on 9755 2633. Similarly, it would be a tremendous help if you could let the office know if you are moving next year and your child will no longer be attending. This information is vital at this stage of the year so that we can finalise our class structure and place students in various classes. Thank you. Our Lollipop Lady cares for you! Julie, our crossing lady, has been telling me how much she loves being our crossing lady! She really cares about each and every person that uses our KALLISTA PRIMARY SCHOOL 72 Monbulk Road Phone: 9755 2633 General Purpose Rm: 9755-3740 Fax: 9755 1960 Email: kallista.ps@ edumail.vic.gov.au Web site: www.kallista.global2. vic.edu.au Principal: Christine Finighan Office Staff: Andrea Gunn Bronwyn Laidler Bernie Smith Class Teachers: Kirsten Belloni Heather Glover Sam Graunke Bonnie Ledger Gail McIntyre Kate Nadji Simone Patterson Amy Roworth Meagan Street Anne Vear Sonja W inkler Art & Library: Georgie Ruzyla Physical Education: Hilary Morris Literacy Support: Marg Brooks Japanese: Yahiro Yashino Garden Specialist: Sonja W ittmann Kitchen Specialist: Kylie Eklund Teacher Assistant: Robyn Durrand Sherrin Dwyer Kerrie Tully Before & After Care: Liz Nia Jayne Turner S. Thank you so much for putting all our children’s safety first! 2016 Parent Contribution Notice to be sent home soon The Kallista Primary School’s annual Parent Contribution Notice will be sent home over the next week. Your contributions to our school are essential to ensure that we can continue to provide the education program we offer at our school. School Uniform…Please see the insert in this week’s Miniscope The Kallista Primary School’s school council decided last year, that it is important that all children wear proper school uniform to KPS. Uniform at Kallista Primary School is compulsory. If any family needs assistance, we have our second-hand uniform shop and also, parents can call me at the office on 9755 2633, if they are experiencing financial difficulties and cannot afford to purchase uniform. I am very happy to help. Please note, bike shorts and leggings without a skirt over the top, are not school uniform. Please ensure your child does not come to school in this attire. Thank you. Before and After School Care Accounts Please note that Before and After School Care accounts need to be settled before the end of the year. If you could please call at the office to settle your account or alternatively make arrangements with the office staff. It is very important that these accounts do not run over into the new year without an arrangement in place. Ball Sports on Friday and Kallista on the Green on Sunday What an exciting final term we have unfolding, with our sporting events, the Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Tree Tops Adventures, Graduation, and the Cameo Cinema excursion, just to mention a few! Ball Sports is on this Friday, so wear your house colours! I wonder who will win?!! Hope to see you all at Kallista on the Green on Sunday. I am looking forward to spending the afternoon with you all, listening to some great music and enjoying all the fun and food and colour of the afternoon! Can’t wait to see you there! We seek parent support to ensure that their child is wearing the correct uniform each morning. The uniform has been developed in consultation with the school community, student representative council and school council. It provides choice for students and allows students to safely engage in the many varied school activities and also cater for the financial constraints of families. This dress code applies during school hours, traveling to and from school, school excursions, and for all school photographs. Students need to present an explanatory note from their parents, if they are out of uniform. The following uniform code is compulsory for all students. Polo Tops - Long or short sleeve - Gold or navy Shorts - Cargo, jersey, culottes Summer Dress - Kallista colour Winter Tunic Or Winter Skirt - Kallista colour or plain navy - Plain navy skivvy or plain navy round neck long sleeve top should be worn as an under garment to pinafore Shoes - Shoes are to be black or navy and can include leather school shoes, elastic sided boots/ankle boots, runners/ sports shoes and covered in sandals Socks - Plain blue, black or white socks Hats - Hats should be plain navy broad brimmed or legionnaires School Bag - Badged, navy school bag is preferred PURCHASING THE SCHOOL UNIFORM Uniforms with Logo Branded Kallista Primary School uniforms can be purchased at: Beleza School Uniform Shop, Shop 5 Mountain Gate Shopping Centre, Ferntree Gully, Tel: 9753 5788 Uniforms without Logo Available for purchase from most large department stores e.g. Kmart, Target etc. Second Hand School Uniform Store Please ask the school office regarding opening hours. Suggestions for addressing children and young peoples’ responses in relation to traumatic events such as the terrorist attacks in Paris. Children and young people will have seen and heard about the terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris on Friday 13 November 2015. The authorities in France and countries around the world will help to support the people who have been impacted by this event. Children often worry and know more than we realise. Adults may assume that children are doing okay if they don’t talk or ask questions about what has happened. Sometimes they have questions they may not ask unless we provide the opportunity. Most children and young people will experience normal reactions to something that is distressing and with support from trusted adults around them these reactions will subside. Routines are important when an event like this occurs. School can be very useful to support all children and young people. Remember sometimes teachers and parents feel like we don’t have the answers. It is helpful to remind children and ourselves that there are people working hard to make the current situation better. Exposure to television, print media and social media Many children are likely to be unsettled by the images on television, in the print media and online media reports about the Paris terrorist attacks. It is important to understand what sense a child or young person makes of what they are seeing on television or hearing via the media (this includes social media) and what they are hearing in adult conversations. It is important to monitor the amount of news coverage they see and hear. Seeing the event over and over again can cause vicarious trauma to adults and children. Children and young people may experience sleeplessness and or nightmares about imagined consequences or images from television or print or social media coverage. Responding to the concerns of children and young people Children and young people may need to talk about what they have seen and heard. It is important that we listen to their concerns. Keep information factual and dispel any rumours. Don’t be afraid to tell them that you don’t have all the answers. Children and young people may need reassurance about their safety and the safety of those they care about. Teachers and parents should listen to the child or young person’s cues as to what they want to know about the terrorist attacks. It is important to be honest with children and young people in an age appropriate way. It is not unusual for young children to want to be close to those they love and care about. Older children will possibly want to discuss the events, it is advisable to clarify information and dispel rumours as this helps them to process the information more accurately. Prepared by the Emergency Management Division, Department of Education and Training. November 2015 Advice for Parents It is wise for you to monitor your child’s exposure to television coverage, print media and social media. Some children and young people will want to talk about the tragic events and try to make sense of what they have both seen and heard. Other children will avoid any discussion around the events and will be reassured by routine and normality. Remember the importance of routine, sleep, exercise and healthy eating. There is a range of things you can do to assist your child during events such as this, including: Acknowledge that the event was distressing Reassure children that they are safe Look for signs of distress (e.g. some children/young people might be scared) Normalise responses - typical response will range from anger to general upset or sadness Maintain a normal routine - keeping the structure at home or at school in place Allow children to express feelings as they arise Telling stories about how people manage during difficult times can be helpful. Separate fact from fiction e.g. children may express fears about unrelated events. Plan relaxing activities before bed – talk your child through a gentle relaxation, this might include using soothing music and talking them through relaxing tension in their body or simply reading something to them that induces relaxation (i.e. a favourite book). Speak in hopeful terms – children and young people will often take their cues from their parents' reactions; if you are honest, calm, compassionate and open they will be much more able to trust that they will be okay. Always remember the value of doing something with children that they like to do such as playing, exercising, being outdoors - have a time during your day to share time with your child. It’s exciting to announce that we have become a sister school with Kitatama Primary School in Japan. Kitatama is located in the central part of Okinawa Island in Okinawa prefecture and is surrounded by beautiful beaches. Kitatama Primary School This month, we will start class room internet video sessions which will help the students develop their Japanese language skills. Our senior students are going to have their first video meeting on 26th of Nov. They have been preparing for this activity and brushing up on their Japanese! Yahiro Yoshino (Japanese LOTE) “THIS FRIDAY 20th” 11.30am – 1.30pm. ALL WELCOME Let’s hope it doesn’t rain this time! What a fantastic day it was for our Athletic Sports. Rain in the morning finally cleared to near perfect conditions. Our Kallista kids were able to demonstrate some great skills and it was wonderful to see so many Prep Mums and Dads attend our very special day. It was a day of thrills, spills, high drama and shock results.......but all good fun. I was so pleased to see the level of enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by all students. I must congratulate our House Captains and Vice Captains for their efforts in trialling and training fellow House members and for their leadership on the day. The role of House Captains is time consuming and, at times, extremely difficult with so many jobs to complete prior to, and during sports days. Our Kallista House system provides wonderful opportunities for many students to gain experience in leadership and management of others. Wasn’t the excitement great to see on the faces of our leaders as the results were announced? Congratulations to O’Donohue for winning the athletics and to Lily and Tyler for their wonderful speeches. What great sports! The variety of events ensures that all students have the opportunity to participate both as an individual and as a team. Students had been practicing, not only in Phys. Ed. lessons, but during recess and lunchtimes also. A big thank you to all Staff and parents that helped out on the day! You really are a dedicated bunch. From recording, taking photos, judging, marshalling, raking the pit, handing out icy-poles, first aid, announcing and finally helping to put equipment away back at school. It’s a huge job and a real team effort. Thankyou. Please find time to check out the sports noticeboard for a great selection of photographs of our Kallista kids in action taken by Nicky Tipping and Jomique Arcaro. Great shots of some very talented kids. The Ball Sports results will be combined with the Athletic results this Friday to determine the OVERALL House Winners for 2015. Good luck everyone.
