Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Los Angeles, California NEEDS ASSESSMENT In the United States, 1.4 percent of all visits to office-based physicians are due to headache, which represents approximately 12 million physician visits in one year. According to recent studies, 8.7 million females and 2.6 million males in the U.S. alone, experience migraine. Existing and ongoing research activity in the field of headache has produced clinical data of which primary care providers should be cognizant in order to provide optimal care to headache sufferers. This data has significant implications for diagnosis and treatment, and may challenge current assumptions about the role of health care professionals in the management of primary headache disorders. Practitioners should be acknowledgeable about new findings concerning pharmacological agents used for the treatment of headache, including new formulations of existing medications and those recently available for headache management. INTENDED AUDIENCE This course is intended for all primary care providers and those specialists, including anesthesia, pain and addiction, internal medicine, OB-GYN, pediatrics, emergency medicine, ENT, neurology, hospitalists, and psychiatry, as well as other health care professionals (R.N., N.P., P.A.) who are involved in the diagnosis and management of headache and chronic pain patients. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Integrate therapeutic tools to more efficiently define the evolution of migraine (staging) and associated comorbidities into an individualized evidence-based treatment plan. • Modify treatment needs of special populations of migraineurs, such as children, adolescent, and the elderly adult patients, and to improve quality of life. • Accurately diagnose migraine to determine treatment need and outcome expectations to include appropriate referral to a headache specialist. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Primary Care Network and the Diamond Headache Clinic Research & Educational Foundation. Primary Care Network is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Primary Care Network (PCN) has been surveyed by the Accreditation This continuing medical education activity has been reviewed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and is acceptable for a maximum of 23 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/CPD Award available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
