There are myriad choices in Greater Richmond’s welcoming neighborhoods. The Fan District, encompassing more than 100 square blocks, is one of the largest intact areas of Victorian architecture in the nation. Photograph by Stephanie Ragland 4 Richmond Dairy Apartments in Jackson Ward now occupy space where milk once flowed. 5 Tobacco Row’s warehouses have been renovated into state-of-the-art loft apartments. Once used for manufacturing, many downtown warehouses have been converted to comfortable living spaces. INTERIORS: COURTESY VENTURE RICHMOND | DAIRY: P.J. SYKES | RIVER LOFTS: MICHAEL IVEY If modern architecture is your style, two residential high-rises sit in the heart of the Canal Walk. WALKER: LAUREN O’NEILL | FAN: TIFFANY SEAY | OTHER PHOTOS: MICHAEL IVEY The Fan District is one of the largest designated historic residential areas in the United States. In the 1920s, Jackson Ward was known as the Harlem of the South. Its ornamental ironworks are said to be second only to New Orleans. Along the narrow, shaded streets of Church Hill are river and city vistas, lush parks, brick sidewalks, gas lanterns and ornate ironwork that add to the neighborhood’s appeal. Church Hill offers brick sidewalks and preCivil War townhouses in the area surrounding St. John’s Church. 6 The American Planning Association designated Monument Avenue as one of their “10 Great Streets.” In 1999, it became the only street in the nation to be designated a National Historic Landmark. Minutes from downtown, new townhome developments offer low-maintenance living in the suburbs. 7 MONUMENT: JEREMY LATIMER | OTHER PHOTOS: MICHAEL IVEY Luxury mansion-style and townhome-style condominiums at Monument Avenue Square recapture the charm and craftsmanship of a bygone era.
