On the mountain of Sinai, G_d communicates to Moses the laws of the Sabbatical year: every seventh year, all work on the land should cease, and its produce becomes free for the taking for all, man and beast. "Appreciation" Acknowledge the good while you have it. As a rabbi, I often meet people who have suffered serious losses, either through the death of a close relative, or owing to an irrevocable decline in health or financial fortunes. In such situations, people sometimes say, "Oh, if things could only go back to being the way they used to be, I would be so happy." Yet I knew these people when things were "the way they used to be," and they weren't so happy, and often complained. A grateful person doesn't express happiness for what he had only when he's lost it. Gratitude consists in acknowledging the good in your life while you still have it. Seven Sabbatical cycles are followed by a fiftieth year—the Jubilee year, on which work on the land ceases, all indentured servants are set free, and all ancestral estates in the Holy Land that have been sold revert to their original owners. Behar also contains additional laws governing the sale of lands, and the prohibitions against fraud and usury. In this week's Parshah, Behar, we learn about some very important mitzvot that apply in the land of Israel. but in addition to that, all servants go free, and all property returns to its original owner. That means that whenever somebody buys a plot of land he knows he will only keep it until the year of yovel when the land will go back to the original owner. Then the Torah tells us that we shouldn't worry that we won't have enough to eat during shemittah and the following year First is because we can't plant and harvest. shemittah. Because G-d promises that the year before The same way shemittah--the sixth year--will produce the seventh enough food for three whole years--the day of the week is Shabbat, every seventh sixth year, the year of shemittah, and the year is a Shabbat for the land when the land following year, when things won't grow gets to "rest." This means that for six years, because there was no planting during farmers may work on the land, sowing shemittah. seeds so things should grow, pruning to help the plants grow better, and harvesting the We also learn in this Parshah that it's fruit and vegetables so they can sell it and forbidden to charge a Jew interest. That make money. But in the seventh year, the means that when we lend someone money, year of shemittah, the land must be allowed we can't take a to rest, and there can be no planting or little extra back as harvesting. Instead, anything that grows a thank you for becomes free for anybody who wants to doing them the just pick and enjoy. favor and lending them the money. After seven cycles of shemittah, the fiftieth Rather, all loans year (7 x 7 = 49, it's the year following the must be free--the 49th, so it's the 50th), is called yovel or the person only has to pay back exactly what jubilee. It is also a year of rest for the land, you lent them. When Rabbi Irving Lehman was a child in the 1920's, he accompanied his mother to get a bracha, a blessing, from the Lubavitcher rebbe who was then visiting the United States (it as a long-standing Jewish tradition to solicit a blessing from a holy person). They stood in line for hours, and when they finally reached the rebbe, he asked her, "How are your children?" "Baruch Hashem" (Thank God), Rabbi Lehrman's mother answered. "And how is your parnassah (livelihood)?" "Baruch Hashem." "How is your family's health?" "Baruch Hashem." "So then what kind of bracha do you want me to give you?" the rebbe asked. She answered, "Zol nisht farshtert veren" (It should not be spoiled). Such is the attitude of the pious, a sense of appreciation for what they have, instead of a focus on what they are missing.
