To our supporters
We are family….always have been, always will be. For more than
102 years, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis has
helped families face financial challenges, assisted children and youth
to develop skills to succeed emotionally and behaviorally, cared for
older adults to age in place with dignity and safety, and so much
more! As the needs have increased, JFCS has responded. This year
alone we served 16,000 people!
JFCS strives to meet the needs of anyone seeking our help.
To do this we rely on a generous community of visionary individuals
and families, supportive foundations, and partnerships and
collaborations with businesses and government. Our talented staff
and our committed volunteers ensure that the highest qualify of care
is delivered.
For the very young, the very old, and everyone in between —

JFCS is family.

P CHP Program partners wit h parents to prepare children for school,
One of Jewish Family and Children’s
Service of Minneapolis’ (JFCS)
greatest success stories in recent
years is its Parent-Child Home Program
(PCHP), with more than 250 families
graduating from the program since
its inception.
The goal of PCHP is to help parents
prepare their children for preschool
or kindergarten. Trained professionals
begin visits with children ages 18
months to two-and-a-half years and
their parents. They visit two times a
week for two years.
Each week home visitors bring a
free educational book or toy to the
families’ homes and help parents
4
JFCS 2012 Annual Report
devise creative ways to interact and
play with their child. One of the
primary goals of PCHP is to inspire
parents to have more enriched
interaction with their children.
“ The agency is always
there to help you and really
is family.”
Crystal decided to sign up her
daughter, Samantha, now 5, for
PCHP after several of her neighbors
recommended the program. “I liked
the one-on-one time I got to spend
with her and I learned how to use the
toys and books so Samantha could
learn from them, rather than just play
with them,” Crystal said.
Samantha graduated from PCHP in
2012 and will begin kindergarten in
the fall. Crystal said the program was a
big help in preparing her daughter
for kindergarten.
“She learned a lot,” Crystal said. “She
had been going to school, but in the
PCHP program she finished learning
the alphabet and shapes and colors.
She learned to switch tasks, going
from one toy or book to another.”
She added that they became close
with their PCHP home visitor, Melissa
110
The Parent-Child Home Program
(PCHP) served 110 families in 2012,
supported by a $250,000 grant from
the State of Minnesota.
The Parent-Child Home Program held its 5th Annual
Graduation Ceremony in 2012. More than 50 families
participated in the event.
Greenwood, in the two years they
spent with her. “Melissa was awesome
and was almost like family by the time
the program ended,” she said.
Melissa was happy to see Crystal
embrace the PCHP program from
the beginning. “Crystal began it with
a friendly and positive attitude that
continued during our time together,”
she said. “She also showed a
willingness to learn and grow along
with Samantha. I am grateful JFCS
can offer this valuable bonding and
learning time to families in
our community.”
her decision coincidentally helped
with her own career path. After
networking with Melissa and other
JFCS staff members, she was hired
as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the
agency’s Deikel Family AlterCare Adult
Day Program.
She is happy she is part of the JFCS
family herself. “The agency is always
there to help you and really is family,”
Crystal said.
Crystal wasn’t familiar with JFCS when
she signed up for the program, but

‘Big’ Randy and ‘Little‘ Evan have gone from jungle gyms to 5K runs
Evan, a “Little” in JFCS’s Jewish Big
Brother/Big Sister Program (BB/BS),
was only 9 when he was paired with
his “Big,” Randy. Eight years later, the
pair — who enjoy doing sports and
fitness activities together — are still
going strong as Evan enters
young adulthood.
“It’s an opportunity to pass on
all the good things I received
growing up to someone else.”
“We’ve gone from jungle gyms to
5K runs,” said Randy, who originally
decided to become a “Big” as a way
to give back to the community and
help impact someone’s life. “It’s an
opportunity to pass on all the good
6
JFCS 2012 Annual Report
things I received growing up to
someone else,” he said.
Evan said he was often hesitant to
take risks when he was younger, but
that Randy has helped him step out
of his comfort zone. In addition to
playing sports and training for runs,
the two enjoy attending the State Fair
and basketball games together.
They have become important
parts of each other’s lives —
Randy participated in Evan’s Bar
Mitzvah and Evan attended Randy’s
wedding. “I’ve grown up a lot
since we started,” Evan said. “In the
beginning, I had a lot of things that
Randy would help me with. Now we
have a more mature friendship.”
Randy enjoys how much their
relationship has grown over the
years. “It’s changed,” he said. “At first
we just did fun things, but now Evan
talks more about what is going on in
his life. We always have a great time.
Being with him has also enriched
my life.”

clients received a total of $54,400
in educational scholarships in 2012
from funds endowed with JFCS, the
Minneapolis Jewish Federation and
Branching Out in New Directions
(BOND) that will ensure they are
prepared for future careers.
Jess succeeds in job search wit h help from JFCS Career Services
After leaving a job in 2010 he realized
wasn’t a good fit, Jess spent some
time as a stay-at-home dad. When
he decided to return to the world
of work, he discovered that trying
to find a job on his own was a more
difficult task than he bargained for.
On the recommendation of a friend,
he decided to contact Jewish
Family and Children’s Service of
Minneapolis (JFCS) Career Services.
And he’s glad he did.
“At first I had reservations because I
didn’t think I needed the services,”
Jess said. “I discovered that not only
did I need it, I was actually foolish to
not take advantage of it.”
After utilizing several of the career
services JFCS provides, he landed a
job as a senior account executive for
a company that provides network,
cloud and digital security services.
Leah Temkin, JFCS Career Services
Program Manager, conducted a
career assessment for Jess when he
first came. She helped him make
sense of the “clutter” that comes
with searching for a job so that he
could figure out what his
strengths were.
“They helped me shape the path
that would best fit my personality
and skill set,” Jess said. “I was able
to focus my energy more efficiently
because of that.”
He also worked with Aaron Karasov,
JFCS Employment Development
Facilitator, who set him up with a
career mentor.
“It was, hands down, one of the
greatest things to happen to me
career-wise,” Jess said. “The mentor
gave me a level of insight that was
really helpful and coached me
terrifically.” Though he now has
a job, Jess said he plans to be in
regular contact with him long into
the future.
Some people try to go it alone when
doing a career search, Jess said, but
the benefits JFCS Career Services
provide are immeasurable. “The JFCS
staff were extremely comforting and
professional and willing to go the
extra mile for me,” he said.

Mental Health Support Services
(MHSS) continues to receive
ongoing funding from Hennepin
County for its case management
program, which serves more than
120 individuals per year diagnosed
with mental illness to help them live
successfully in the community.
JFCS a ‘godsend ’ for Brad, who has struggled wit h anxiety and depression
After splitting with his wife of 30 years
in 2011, Brad was at a loss of what to
do. He didn’t know what he needed
exactly, but knew he was struggling.
“I had major anxiety, depression and
other problems,” he said. “I was
feeling pretty isolated. I didn’t have
anybody at that point. I needed help
with my mental health.”
He didn’t know much about Jewish
Family and Children’s Service
of Minneapolis (JFCS), but was
somewhat familiar with it based on
his involvement years prior with the
Jewish Recovery Network addiction
support group. After calling JFCS
in 2011, he was assigned a case
manager, Katie Olmanson, who was
able to help him with his financial
and emotional needs.
Since his wife moved out, Brad
was having difficulty paying his
8
JFCS 2012 Annual Report
mortgage and was at risk of losing
his home. Katie referred to him
to the Neighborhood Assistance
Corporation of America, which
helped him modify the terms of his
mortgage. That allowed Brad, who
receives government disability pay,
to reduce his mortgage payment so
that he could remain in his home —
a goal of case management.
With Katie’s encouragement and
assistance, Brad was also able
to identify ways to increase
socialization. This was new to him,
because during their marriage, Brad
and his wife led a fairly isolated life.
“When my wife left, I had to do
something to get back in the
mainstream of life,” Brad said. “Katie
got on my case that I needed to get
out and I’m glad she did.”
Thanks to her encouragement, Brad
now has several weekly cribbage
groups and has also joined a senior
fitness program. “I’ve made a best
friend and have met a bunch of guys
to spend time with,” he said.
During his marriage, he was not very
active in the Jewish community. But
through JFCS he has received
high-holiday tickets and also has
become a regular presence at
the agency’s Passover Seders and
Chanukah parties.
Ultimately, he is in a much better
place than he was when he first
called JFCS. “I didn’t know what
kind of help I needed,” Brad said.
“JFCS was a godsend. I told them my
problems and when I asked, ‘What
do I do?’ They had answers.”
600
L’Chaim Senior Services (LCSS) serves
more than 600 clients. This includes
20,520 kosher Meals On Wheels
delivered, 6,270 hours of homemaking services, 2,974 rides provided
by Deikel Transportation, 1,008
shopping trips, and more than 3,000
senior companion visits.
Susanne knows she is never alone, thanks to JFCS
After she had to quit working due to
physical disabilities, Susanne was in
a “desperate situation,” having spent
two years with no income.
“I will never stop being grateful.
JFCS has meant so much to me
to know I’m covered no matter
what comes up.”
Living a somewhat isolated life in
her apartment and with no family in
town, she was in need of assistance.
Susanne was referred to Jewish
Family and Children’s Service of
Minneapolis (JFCS) by her rabbi
and things began to improve
immediately. The agency set her up
with L’Chaim Senior Services (LCSS)
and she was assigned her own
case manager.
Through the agency, Susanne
receives cleaning and handyman
services at her apartment, which
help her greatly due to her physical
limitations. She also has a great
relationship with her outreach visitor,
Rena. They have become friends,
going on outings to restaurants,
movies, parks, the gym and
other places.
“We have a lot of fun together,”
Susanne said. “She gets me out of
the house to do fun things I probably
wouldn’t be doing. She really is
a sweetheart.”
Though Susanne has since qualified
for disability compensation from the
government, she said JFCS provides
so much more than a check in the
mail — it enriches her life. Her case
manager, Heather Stras, provides
boundless warmth and caring,
Susanne added.
“The best part for me is to know that
Heather has my back,” she said. “I
will never stop being grateful. JFCS
has meant so much to me to know
I’m covered no matter what comes
up. It just makes me feel like I’m not
alone. I just feel so lucky.”

Slima, a Holocaust survivor, is grateful for support and companionship
Slima and her husband, Solorez,
moved to the U.S. from Romania in
1987 and have been clients of Jewish
Family and Children’s Service of
Minneapolis (JFCS) since they arrived.
Slima and Solorez have received
Chanukah gifts through the agency’s
Hag Sameach Program, as well as
food and other items for Passover
and Rosh Hashanah.
When they first came, the agency
helped with their resettlement
costs, paying their apartment rent
for three months until they were
able to do so themselves. In the
25 years since then, the couple has
received various services from JFCS
to maintain their independence and
Slima has continued to do so since
Solorez’s death this past August.
As Holocaust survivors, Solorez
and Slima qualify for JFCS’s Survivor
Support Services. This program
guided them through the process of
receiving newly available funding for
home care services available through
the Conference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany.
“I’m happy to be a client of JFCS and
to have someone I can talk to and
get advice,” Slima said. “They helped
both of us and now they help me
with everything I need.”
10
JFCS 2012 Annual Report
When Solorez’s health began
deteriorating a few years ago,
the couple’s case manager, Amy
Taswell, was able to help them get
the assistance they needed. “My
husband was very sick and needed
someone to take care of him every
day,” Slima said. “Amy gave us
referrals and advice that helped me
very much.”
During this time, Slima was able to
access JFCS’s shopping assistance
services, which helped her get
groceries and other necessities.
Solorez appreciated this service very
much, she said, and Slima continues
to use it today. The shopping trips
provide her with socialization and
companionship, she said, which is
important for an isolated senior.
In the 25 years she has been a
JFCS client, Slima said she’s always
received the help she has needed.
“It’s very nice,” she said. “I’m happy
to be their client and I appreciate
what they do for me.”
Roslyn enjoys remaining independent in her home with help from JFCS
Roslyn lives alone and appreciates
that she can spend her senior years
in her home, as opposed to an
assisted living facility. She said she is
able to do this thanks to the services
Jewish Family and Children’s Service
of Minneapolis (JFCS) provides.
She originally came to JFCS for
counseling services almost a decade
ago and has been a client of the
agency’s L’Chaim Senior Services
(LCSS) since 2009. She receives
grocery shopping assistance through
JFCS and also has an outreach visitor,
Randee, who spends time with her
and takes her on outings.
Roslyn, a dog lover, has a great
relationship with Randee and
especially enjoys that their two dogs
can play together when she visits.
“She’s just a doll,” Roslyn said. “I
once told her, ‘I just met you, but I
feel like I’ve known you all my life.’
We just are so comfortable with
one another.”
Roslyn said JFCS’s services helped
her battle a recent bout with
depression and that she is doing
much better. She praised her
case manager, Lauren Ribnick, for
remaining a constant contact in
her life.
“Lauren shares with my family what
my needs are,” Roslyn said. “If I
have a question, I know Lauren will
answer me back. What I like best is
the consistency. JFCS provides such
a dependable service,” she said.
