The Society takes great pleasure in presenting its 123rd Annual Art Exhibition from 17th February to 23rd February 2015, at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai I am glad to inform that The Bombay Art Society’s new building will finally be open for Artists and Art lovers. The newly constructed building is located in Bandra reclamation opposite Rangsharada. There are several things that make The Bombay Art Society a special project. It is the only Art society building having its own premises with a vast space for exhibiting artist works, holding art classes and a mini theater, and the only building to be opened up in Mumbai in recent times for a space that will solely be dedicated to art and art community. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our former President Late Prafulla Dilip Dahanukar. My fond memories of Prafullatai regarding The Bombay Art Society new premises and annual exhibitions brings us comfort during this hard time and looking back on all the good memories we are able to have and a smile at the fact that we completed her desire before she passed away. With a heavy heart we pray for eternal peace for Prafullatai’s soul, who was a woman of distinguished humanity and she will be truly missed by the Art fraternity. The tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have to hold onto are the happy memories that we’ve shared with Prafullatai, this is what keeps her alive in our hearts and in our minds, she will continue to live on, through us. I firmly believe that God will accept her with open arms for all the good she has done for upcoming artist and The Bombay Art Society, while she was on this earth. A beautiful soul, full of love and faith, ascended to heaven, away from us, but closer to God, leaving loneliness and sadness. Prafullataai will not be forgotten. When we lose a loved one here on earth, we gain an angel in heaven that watches over us. May we take comfort in knowing that we have an angel to watch over The Bombay Art Society now……. May her soul rest in peace, We pass our heartfelt condolences to her family. This year The Bombay Art Society feels privileged to confer her with “Vishesh Krutadnyata Sanman” for her selfless mission towards The Bombay Art Society and Art world. We also express our deep pathos on the demise of renowned Artist Vishnu D. Joshi, Shivaji Tupe and renowned Sculptor Premsingh Rathod. We pass our heartfelt condolences to their families. The Society is bound to execute all Art related events and programs with due care and thanks every one for support provided to us and hope you will continue the same in future. Thanking You. Prof. Narendra Vichare Hon. Secretary (BAS) 3 rd 123 ALL INDIA ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION Abdul Aziz Raiba Abdul Aziz Raiba was born on 20 July 1922, near Mazgaon, Mumbai into a family of meager means. His father was a tailor. He secured a scholarship to study at Anjuman-I-Islam school. After learning basic techniques for admission from Dandavatimath, he completed diploma in 1946 at Sir J. J. School of Art with a scholarship from Charles Gerard, the dean. After graduating Charles Gerard appointed him as a fellow to assist other students. Raiba won Bronze, silver and Gold medals from Bombay Art Society from 1947 to 19951.And was awarded one of the best ten artist of India by Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi in 1962. Raiba started painting professionally in the early 1950s with a style of his own. With his inclination to go to Paris Raiba approached Walter Langhamer, the art director of the Times of India who advised him to go to Kashmir. In his stay at Kashmir for five years, Raiba painted landscapes with a different perspective and light as his inclination for Indianness was deep rooted because of his Professor Jaggannath Ahivasi. His works were just not live drawings but had images, based on a studied research of History. Right after Kashmir, Raiba travelled to the temples of South India, Goa and the sub-continent in search of subjects. A large oeuvre of his work is based on recreated scenes of old Bombay and the erstwhile Portuguese colonies that neighbored the city such as Bassein (Vasai), which is based on his research of manuscripts of the British and the Portuguese from the 18th century. The placement of subjects within his paintings borrow from the murals, narrating multiple stories, histories through intricate images that often go unnoticed but remain essential. His work is characterized by bold shapes, strong outlines, and simple use of sophisticated color. His landscapes often use a deliberately naive perspective. 4 rd 123 ALL INDIA ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION Raiba is known for his use of jute as a medium which was self developed with a difficult and time consuming process. He adopted it at a time when canvas was less available and more expensive. Presently in his studio that faces a miniature garden in the suburb of Nala Sopara, Raiba endlessly makes sketches on Khadi or handmade made cotton paper, preferring its coarseness for its affinity to jute. Progressive Artist Group invited him to join their exhibition but did not continue after one exhibition. His some of the other exhibitions include 1953 Bombay Artist Creations, Zurich; 1954 Biennale of Rome; 1955, AIFACS, New Delhi; 1957 Milan; 1959 Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay; 1961 UAE; 1961 USSR, Paris and Rio de Janeiro1964; Taj Art Gallery, Bombay; 1965 South East Africa and Nairobi.; 1969 Mirza Ghalib Centenary Show, Taj Art Gallery, Bombay; Bombay of the 18th Century, Taj Art Gallery and Gallery Chemould. His paintings are in collections in the Museum, Egypt, in the Nagpur Museum, and in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi. He sustained himself on commissions of murals, bagging notable projects such as those for Air India and the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi. In his catalogue he mentions“To comprehend the meaning of Art, I have ceaselessly tried to understand what life is – its circuitous course and ultimate goal. I go through a labyrinth of desire and fear, and I must keep on. The only alternative to ceaseless action is Death, which alone can drop a curtain on the medley of deeds and also what remains undone". AA Raiba is 91, reflecting back on his practice he says, that decades have passed but his work remains unfinished. " Itni Umar gayi, Kam khatam nahi hua” The Bomaby Art Society is proud to present Shri A A Raiba with the prestigious Roop Dhar award for his continuous dedication for Art. . 5 rd 123 ALL INDIA ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION The Lalibai Dharmdas Bhambhani Scholarship STUDY TOUR SHIKSHAN GAMAN 20”x48” Acrylic on Canvas Manojkumar Sakale Born : 26th Jan 1975 Qualification : A.T.D., G.D. There are many people who have immensely contributed for the progress of society and helped to further the cause of promoting art and artist. It is these very people who have made the society what it stands today. The committee of The Bombay Art Society has decided to bestow the 'Services Recognition Sanman' to those who have devoted their life and rendered the great service to the art fraternity through The Bombay Art Society. This year society is conferring 'Services Recognition Sanman' posthumously to late Smt. Prafulla Dahanukar who has served the art field for more than a decade. We are also presenting 'Services Recognition Sanman' posthumously to the late Shri. Shivaji Tupe, eminent artist, who has served The Bombay Art Society. . S mt. Prafulla Dahanukar, born on January 1, 1934 at Goa completed her schooling in Girgaon, Mumbai. Considering her talents from school years, her Father encouraged her to take admission in Sir J J School of Arts. In 1955, she accomplished her studies with a Gold Medal. In 1955 Prafulla won a Silver Medal for her painting in the Annual Exhibition of the Bombay Art Society. In 1956 she had her first Exhibition of Paintings at Jahangir Art Gallery, which was a grand success. In 1957 the government of France awarded her a scholarship for the study of graphic art at Ecole de Beaux Arts and Atelier 17 in Paris for a year. In 1967 she married Industrialist Shri Dilip Dahanukar. She had her first Exhibition of Paintings based on Ragas and Raginis based on Indian Miniatures later on she created a series on Bombaywala based on small workers in the city and later on a series on Mother and Child; then onwards her journey in art shifted more towards Abstract, which evolved to the series of Mindscapes and then to Eternal Space, which expressed her quiet, happy inner arena, which very subtly caressed the souls of viewers with the softness and serenity. In Paris she held an exhibition of her paintings and since then participated in exhibitions in Hungary, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Japan, Portugal, Iceland, France and Dubai. On her completion of fifty years of her career as a painter, she was honored by the Jehangir Art Gallery by sponsoring the Retrospective show of her painting through the five decades . Her paintings have been offered on ''Sothebys and Osean art auctions. Her paintings are in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art and Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi, the Central Museum in Nagpur, the Prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai. She has gained recognition for her murals, particularly those in ceramic, wood and glass, which highlight many prominent buildings in Mumbai, Pilani, Kolkata and Muscat (Oman). She was a complete persona of Art, having diverse interests. Besides being a world acclaimed painter, she wrote poems and had great affinity for Indian Classical Music and Marathi Drama Theater, which is manifested by her varied contributions as a pivotal persona of Indian art world by working in different 8 rd 123 ALL INDIA ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION capacities with social responsibility as the President of The Bombay Art Society, former President of The Art Society of India, Vice Chairman of the Artists' Center; Trustee of The Jehangir Art Gallery; actively associated with Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Yadgaar Sabha, Birla sponsored Sangeet Kala Kendra and Indian National Theater, Goa Kala Academy; committee member of the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, from 1974-79; founder Trustee of Lonavala Bal Anandgram, an orphanage for social cause. A person connected with almost all art organizations of Maharashtra and Goa. With the distinctness of her personality of vigor and joy, she had an undercurrent of a composed calm which marked her presence, wherever she went and in whatever projects she undertook.Along with her many successful projects in past, like organizing a Mahefil of two Maestros Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Hussain in the centenary celebration of Bombay Art Society in 1989 and from the funds collected, initiated Bendre “Hussain Scholarship “ for the upcoming artists; she was the key person to celebrate the Centenary of Portrait Master Shri V A Mali and Felicitate him with a sum of Rs. 10 lacs in 2011; she has been instrumental in getting the Land from Govt. of Maharashtra, for one of the oldest art institution in India, The Bombay Art Society. The Bombay Art Society had been her priority even in her sickness. Her presence in the office of BAS was a regular place for her visitors to meet her. She has contributed her best for the BAS all her life. After a busy, creative and contented life she left for her heavenly journey on March 1, 2014, in a brief illness. She has been always a friend on call, a guide on request and a help in need for one and many in art fraternity. Always approachable inspite of her busy schedule, she has been a buddy to contemporary Masters and a blessing hand for the upcoming and promising artists. The Art Community of Maharashtra owes her a great deal for bridging both worlds i.e. of Contemporary Abstract Art and that of Representational Art. She had the keen eye to judge the best of both and that made her instrumental in shaping the careers of many contemporary masters. She lived her life with full zeal to enjoy the moment to moment bliss and happiness with compassion for whomsoever she met. Her unpublished Autobiography “Jivanand…” signifies her philosophy of happiness. Her absence has left a mammoth vacuum in the Art Scenario. She has left her imprint in all hearts which can never be erased. It is very rare to have someone like her who was all encompassing and always omnipresent in the art world. She, who most deserved acclamation for her dedication to Art and her great and relentless contribution in art fraternity, modestly but firmly, disapproved all her life for accepting any reward, award or felicitation, proving her selfless affiliation to all the art institutions and organizations. Her purpose for the promotion of art and artists is carried on further by her ever supportive husband Shri Dilip Dahanukar and two daughters Gauri Mehta and Gopika Kartikeyan in the form of Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation. Today, Bombay Art Society feels privileged to confer her with “Vishesh Gaurav” for her selfless mission towards Art Fraternity and for BAS in particular. 9 rd 123 ALL INDIA ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION Shivajirao Tupe Shivajirao Tupe known for his passion for travelling all over India to paint landscape was born on July 25, 1935 at Sinnar, Nasik, in a family of artist grandfather and father.
