In 1999 when dozens of companies were going public every week, consolidations were all the rage. “Big corporations were swallowing up the little guys. We had lots of people kicking our tires,” Testa said. From the 18 buyout nibbles TCI received, Testa and his partner selected Teligent because its president and CEO was Alex Mandel, former president and COO of AT&T, and it had $2.5 billion in venture capital, including half a billion from Bill Gates. Other companies had offered more than the $14 million Testa and his partner received in Teligent stock, but Teligent had agreed to keep TCI’s employees. “What’s an extra couple of million dollars when you can’t look at yourself in the mirror? So we took the Teligent deal, which in retrospect, was the wrong deal, but we had our employees in mind,” Testa said. The deal closed in May 2000. A year later, when Teligent filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Testa’s stock was worthless. ”The company got caught up in the burst of the dot-com bubble,” Testa said. Adding insult to injury, Testa and Peterson had to get permission from a bankruptcy court to buy back their own company. “We were one of the few outside companies that Teligent had purchased over a threeyear period that was able to buy the company back, so we were very fortunate. The relief of getting it back was tremendous,” said Testa, who bought out Peterson in 2004, making him TCI’s sole owner. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS Dear Fellow Alumni During the last year, I have met wonderful Quinnipiac alumni across the country who are dedicated and enthusiastic members of the Quinnipiac family with a passion for our alma mater. I am thrilled to report that, as the saying goes, “membership has its privileges.” In early 2007, you will receive a new Alumni Association Membership Card and information about your exclusive alumni privileges. One benefit I’m excited about is the Alumnus-to-Alumnus Discount Program. Alumni business owners and managers can increase their customer base by offering QU alumni discounts on products and services at their businesses. It’s a great way to “keep it in the family” while supporting fellow alumni. Also, please mark your calendars for some very important dates. FA L L 2 0 0 6 Jonathan Gaffney 83 VP keeps air travel moving at DC airports By Lawrence Mohr ore than 2,200 flights and 123,000 passengers arrive and depart daily from Washington Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National airports. Keeping them secure and on time is a small part of the portfolio of Jonathan Gaffney ’83, vice president for communications at the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. Protecting the skies from terrorism is a carefully orchestrated operation that requires the resources of the airports, U.S. Homeland Security, the Federal Aviation Administration and the commercial carriers. “It demands a high degree of coordination, and it’s a process that continues to evolve and develop even more effective methods and more sophisticated technologies. Our airports have taken tremendous steps to make ground and air traffic safer and passenger friendly,” Gaffney says. As a result, commercial airlines are beginning to recover from the financial devastation of 9/11. “It’s a sign of travelers’ resiliency—they are seasoned, smart and observant,” Gaffney says. Besides airport communications, Gaffney is in charge of the airport authority’s government relations program, public and media affairs, community and business relations, marketing and noise abatement. A native of Cape Cod, Mass., Gaffney earned a bachelor’s in health management from QU and a master’s in international studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988. As a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he completed tours of duty aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and served during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In his youth, Gaffney became interested in the political process. From 1988–90, he worked at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and as an underJonathan Gaffney ‘83 graduate, he spent a year at Ronald Reagan Washington National interning with the Connecticut Airport General Assembly in Hartford. Gaffney also spent five years on Capitol Hill as a senior staff member in the U.S. House, with responsibilities ranging from strategy to speechwriting and media relations. During his career, he has testified before committees of the U.S. Congress on defense downsizing and veterans’ issues and has provided insight and opinion on politics, U.S. foreign policy and aviation on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS and CSPAN. Gaffney lives in Arlington, Va., with his wife, Tracy Malone, a retired Navy captain and their children: a daughter, Whitley, and twin sons, Kelly and Coury. But associate English professor Peter Cortland knows the downside of cycling. “It’s dangerous! I’ve been hit [off campus] by cars twice.” Others seen free-wheeling around campus are Hans Bergmann, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and assistant English professor Tim Dansdill.
