WE ARE PLEASED TO WELCOME
BETH RABINOWITZ
AS OUR NEW
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION DIRECTOR
We are delighted to introduce Beth Rabinowitz, Temple Sinai’s new Early Childhood Education Director. Beth
comes to us with a wealth of experience that will directly contribute to the continued growth of our Preschool programming and enrollment. For the past eleven years Beth has served as Director of Early Childhood Education at
Keneseth Israel. She earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and an undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware. Before becoming a Preschool Director Beth owned and operated a
Little Gym Franchise.
Beth has been the National Conference Chair, Board Member and Executive Board Member for the Early Childhood
Educators of Reform Judaism and is a member of the Delaware Valley Association For The Education Of Young Children and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She also completed the LASKO
Fellowship and recently received her PA Director’s Credential.
She is married and has two daughters. Samantha is an education major at Penn State University and graduate of
Gratz and Upper Dublin High School. Jolie is a student in the Upper Dublin School District. She has a cat named
Maggie who she considers her third child.
“I couldn’t be more delighted to welcome someone of Beth’s caliber and dedication” remarked Ed Altman. “There
is no question that Beth brings a level of competency and real world experience that we can quickly capitalize on,
and I am looking forward to working with her in the expansion of what we offer. I would also like to thank our
Search Committee headed up by Tobey Grand and Melanie Lewin for the time and energy they devoted to bringing
on board such an outstanding candidate.”
Early childhood education has been Beth’s passion and advocating for young children and teachers her life’s work.
Please make sure to stop by and introduce yourselves as time permits.

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY Rabbi Adam Wohlberg
Just weeks ago, in the final days of June, the United States Supreme Court handed
down a landmark opinion guaranteeing in law the right of same sex-couples to marry.
Married same-sex couples will now enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples throughout this country and will be recognized on official
documents such as birth and death certificates. The U.S. now becomes the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.
I applaud this decision and consider it a worthy and necessary step towards establish
ing equal rights for all Americans regardless of their national origin, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation. What a powerful statement has been made that in a country where for more than two centuries sexual
relations between adults of the same gender was considered to be a criminal act, it is now permissible for
two men or two women to wed and be recognized as a married couple receiving all of the rights and benefits
which a married man and woman are guaranteed.
Responding to the Supreme Court’s decision, the Rabbinical Assembly (the association of Conservative/Masorti rabbis) released a statement that included the following:
Jewish tradition reminds us that we were all created equally, b'tzelem Elohim, in the ‘image of God’ (Genesis
1:27), and
alsoAdam
shows us that marriage is a sacred responsibility, not only between the partners, but also beRabbi
tween the couple and the larger community. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court upholds equality and the
sacred commitment of marriage for all couples, regardless of sexual orientation. As Justice Kennedy wrote,
‘No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.’
Our Movement recognizes and supports same-sex marriages as well as opposite-sex marriages, and therefore
celebrates today’s ruling by the Supreme Court.
The issue of same-sex marriage has been hotly debated in this country for many years. Similarly, it has been
a topic of much discussion in the Jewish community for more than two decades as has been the matter of
homosexuality in general. Based on the Torah’s explicit prohibition of a man lying with a man as a man lies
with a woman (Lev. 18:22), religious groups have historically found it challenging to accept homosexuality and
Jewish groups are no exception.
The Conservative Movement, wedded as it is to halacha (Jewish law as it emanates from the Torah and has
been developed by the rabbis) has examined the issue – and the Torah’s pronouncements – on several occasions. Most recently, in December of 2006, the Conservative Movement’s Committee on Jewish Law and
Standards approved three teshuvot (“responsa” – legal opinions) dealing with same-sex relations, commitment ceremonies and the matter of ordination. Of the three, the one that most informs my thinking is the
one written by Rabbis Daniel Nevins, Avram Reisner and Elliot Dorff. They argued that the Torah’s ban on a
certain type of sexual behavior remains in force, but that all other prohibitions introduced by the rabbis of
later generations need no longer be adhered to. (The responsum can be viewed at http://www.rabbinicalassembly.org/sites/default/files/public/halakhah/teshuvot/20052010/dorff_nevins_reisner_dignity.pdf.) The
justifications for their position are ones that I know many of us would consider convincing: the considerable
scientific research on homosexuality and fundamental Jewish values such as k’vod ha-briyot (the dignity due
all human beings), to name just two.
Our society and the Jewish community have traveled a considerable distance in affording gays and lesbians
the respect and protection in law that are rightfully theirs. The Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriage is
another step in the right direction. I look forward to the day when lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender
individuals will be recognized by all people as having been created b’tzelem Elohim.
MAKE
A
MINYAN
Because 10 a day is the Jewish way
Friends,
I need your help.
Actually, it is your fellow congregants and I who are asking for your help. We need your support for our
daily minyanim (our morning and evening services). With fewer meetings in the synagogue and so many
people away on vacation, attendance for our daily services during the summer months is particularly challenging.
Here are 3 ways in which you can help:
1) MAKE A RESOLUTION to come to one (or more) of our weekday services each month.
Twice-a-month, even better. If you are available on Sunday mornings, we could
use your help then, as well.
2) WHEN YOU RECEIVE A POSTCARD WITH A MINYAN ASSIGNMENT, don't ignore it please come to the minyan. If everyone responded to these invitations, we
would never have a problem "making a minyan."
3) LET US KNOW IF WE CAN TEXT YOU OR CALL YOU when we have fewer than
10 people present (you can specify if you prefer mornings or evenings)
A. Prefer a CALL? Please provide us with the best number(s) at which to reach you
and let us know which day(s) of the week are better for you.
B. Prefer a TEXT? We will be trying something new -- our minyan leaders will
have the ability to send a group text to those who have registered and as people respond, the group will see who is on their way. Please specify on which days you would be willing to receive a text.
Note: By providing us with your phone number(s), you are not obligated to attend when you are texted or
called.
Please email Andrea Domsky (Religious Committee Chair) at adomsky3@gmail.com with information if you
are willing to be contacted. Or call the main office with your info (215) 643-6510.
I am proud of the fact that we hold services in our congregation every day of the week. Maintaining morning
and evening minyanim for fellow congregants who need to say kaddish, and in order to uphold one of our
synagogue's (and one of our people's) most sacred traditions, is a responsibility that we all share. I ask for
your help in this important endeavor.

DIRECTOR OF FAMILY ENGAGEMENT Shelly Shotel
I hope you are having a happy and relaxing summer! I saw this humorous cartoon on
Facebook a few weeks ago and it stopped me in my tracks thinking about how to best
explain the meaning of this cartoon to my kids. Growing up in this digital age is quite
confusing. At times it is empowering, fun and exciting to be in touch with texts, pictures, and selfies and more with people we see all the time and others that we haven’t
seen for years. At other times, it can provoke feelings such as jealousy, sadness and
loneliness. When I saw this cartoon below, I thought about how much time “we”
spend looking and responding to our phone – messages, texts, emails and reading what others have shared.
It really made me think and begin to observe and take notes on how often I am interacting with my phone.
I was surprised by the amount of time I gave to my phone and how it stopped me from really enjoying and
being in the moments with many things like…my son’s baseball game, craft projects with my daughter, and
much more.
As we continue to enjoy the summer, let’s plan our calendars to schedule your Fall to include a Family Simchat Torah celebration for Monday evening, October 5th, our Winter Chanukah Family Engagement Mitzvah
afternoon and evening on December 6th and plan to be here during Spring break to celebrate Purim with
an incredible carnival and family engagement programming on March 23 that will have you saying WOW!
These dates are just a few of the many family activities being planned that will allow us to put the phones
and technology aside for some spiritual, religious and community FUN!

SISTERHOOD PRESIDENTS
Liz Shamir & Karen Mann
We are the new co-presidents of Sisterhood and hope everyone is having a great
summer. We thought that this, our first column, would be a good opportunity
to introduce ourselves; highlight Sisterhood events scheduled for September
and October; and share some of our thoughts on the value of Sisterhood.
Our families have been members of Temple Sinai for 20+ years. Karen has been President of the Preschool
PTA and the Religious School PTA. Both of Karen’s children, Jeffrey and Michele, went to TS Preschool and
Religious School and were Bar/Bat Mitzvahed at Temple Sinai. Liz’s three children, Tamar, Matan, and Kerin
attended Religious School, were Bar/Bat Mitzvahed, and confirmed at Temple Sinai as well. Ten years ago
with a dedicated group of volunteers, Liz inaugurated the Sukkah Hop. Since then she has been involved with
Programming and Membership at Sisterhood.
Although we didn’t foresee it when we first joined Temple Sinai, Sisterhood has come to mean a lot to us. It
has, most importantly, given us the opportunity to deepen our friendships with Temple Sinai members. We
have also seen some great Broadway Shows, heard inspiring speakers, and visited some interesting local sites,
all with a great group of “Sisters!”
Sisterhood has also given us the opportunity to develop our leadership skills. We consider the Sukkah Hop to
be an example of “entrepreneurial volunteerism.” Many of the Sisterhood roles have professional and personal applications whether it is marketing, communication, sales, and/or event planning.
Looking ahead to the coming year, Sisterhood is bringing back by popular demand, the Challah Baking Demonstration on Sunday, October 11th, 10 AM. The Opening Event is scheduled for Monday, October 19th at 7:30
PM. Shuly Rubin Schwartz, Professor of American Jewish History at the Jewish Theological Seminary will be
giving a presentation on Jewish Clothing through history, how it ties to Jewish Identity, and what message
our clothing conveys. Please mark your calendars and don't be shy about singing the praises of Sisterhood to
potential members!
Sisterhood’s Annual Brochure which highlights our programs for all of 5776 should be arriving in your mail box
along with High Holiday information in early September. Information will also be coming by e-mail.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns. We want this to be a super year!
Best regards, Karen Mann (zelmann62@gmail.com) and Liz Shamir (lizshamir@gmail.com).

CAMP MACCABEE DIRECTOR Laurie Matez
Camp Maccabee is in full swing! All of our campers are having lots of fun, whether they
are busy in their bunks playing, creating art projects, cooking, or just being silly. Summer brings happy faces all around. We have been lucky to have visits from the Mr. David
C Perry as well as Peter Moses, and we look forward to having Hatman and Segal Puppets stop in for a visit too, and of course, our end of summer carnival! In addition, we
are enjoying the wonderful program Soccer Shots, every other week. The children enjoy
having the opportunity to experience many different types of programming throughout
the summer.
Each week the campers have been enjoying weekly activities related to our chosen themes. They are enjoying
swimming and water play, arts and crafts, sports, and music as well. Our counselors are fully engaging them in
fun and safe activities. It is wonderful to see how many of the children love the swimming pool and have been
making friends with one another! We encourage them to try everything!
Hot lunches are a BIG hit. The children are willing to try new foods when sitting in a group with their friends…I
guess you can say there is some good peer pressure going on at camp as well! It’s wonderful to see the campers
trying new foods and enjoying many healthy options including fresh fruits and veggies!
We are so glad that you signed your children up for Camp Maccabee and we hope that you will continue on with
us at our wonderful Preschool in the fall! Registration is open and we would love to have your child be a part of
our school. Stay cool and enjoy the remaining weeks of summer!
HAZAK
Steve
Rosen
HAZAK PRESIDENT Steven Rosen
We are deep into our planning for the upcoming 2015-2016 year. Our growing and
enthusiastic membership all felt that the programs we presented in the prior year were
interesting and educational and a worthwhile reason to come to Temple Sinai. Hazak
members have included those who were members of Temple Sinai and others who have
moved out of the community but felt that it was important to come back and socialize
with other members of the Jewish community. We even had someone who came to
events from as far as Wilmington, Delaware and has joined Hazak this year.
I want to personally thank the Hazak Board of Directors, committee chairmen and other participants who
helped create a wonderful year. I would also like to thank Temple Sinai and its religious and lay staff for being
so supportive of our activities.
In the coming year we are planning programs that meet and exceed the standards set last year. In general, our
programs will include religion, education, humor, music, sports, and politics. In addition, we have scheduled
our annual Movie and Hot Dog night and also a trip. Hazak will also be having a brunch to honor our Veterans
in November. Last but not least, we will have Hazak Shabbat on March 19th so our members can participate in
Shabbat services.
As a reminder, if you have not paid your annual dues of $20 per person for the coming year, please mail it to
Rose Beck, our Treasurer, and make the check out to Hazak.
