Other songs have deeply rooted anti‐war sentiments or lament the sad tales of urban South African poverty and the struggle to survive as musicians in the global capitalist economy. Lira’s desire to be a musician came early – she wrote her first song at just 16 and never really stopped. “It was an epiphany for me – at that moment I realised that I could express myself creatively through music and that people got it.” What was remarkable from the start was Lira’s ability to reach out and touch the widest spread of music fans, young and old, black and white. She is now established as a crossover artist capable of delivering to everyone from hip, black urbanistas to suburban grannies and everyone in‐between. With her latest album ‘Saul In Mind,’ Lira earned four 2009 South African Music Awards, including Best Female Artist and Album of the Year. www.myspace.com/missliramusic www.griot.de/lira.html Martinez Hotel, Salon Acajou (350) 22.40 > 23.00 Wouter Kellerman Kellerman Music ● South Africa Silas Fuphe – guitar Wouter Kellerman – flute Ratshepe Makhene – bass Themba Mkhize – piano Malamine Sonko – percussion © DR Wouter Kellerman is widely considered to be South Africa's foremost flautist, taking his crossover world music to a large audience. Her music and composition also shine with North African influences in a very acoustic and dry sound, punctuated by percussion and hand clapping. Her music has been called ‘an ancestral blues, original jazz and oriental vibration.’ Hindi was born in Morocco in a family of Berber artists, including renowned Amazigh band Oudaden, and was initiated to traditional Gnaoua music, as well as discovering Bob Dylan, Bob Marley’s reggae, then Ali Farka Touré’s Malian blues and Ismaël Lo’s sensual folk music. She was first noticed in 2006 with a home recorded album. And 2008 ‘Monday’s Ghost’ is her first studio work. It’s been called an ‘obsessive, spooky and beautiful album (…) distinguished with unquiet charm.’ Right on. Charm rushes at once right from the first title ‘Shape.’ Sophie Hunger’s stunning voice catches attention on the spot. Something both beautiful and mysterious is right there : promising, engaging, immediately moving, from English to Swiss‐German languages, with a unique common tone. Michael Flury’s magnificent trombone is a solid counterpoint to Hunger’s voice, compositions and melodies feel like simple folk‐pop‐jazz ballads. Definitely an ‘unquietly’ beautiful ensemble, often melancholic, always vivid and alive. Sophie Hunger : here’s a beautiful voice, full of young life and mature altogether. Just beautiful. www.myspace.com/sophiehunger Midem Jazz Club presents Catalan Jazz Night Carlton Hotel, Salon Zéphyr (550) 23.10 > 00.10 Giulia Valle Group Spain ● Fresh New Talent / Blue Moon Gorka Benitez – tenor sax Marco Mezquida – piano, fender rhodes Marti Serra – soprano, tenor sax Giulia Valle – double bass David Xirgu – drums © JUAN MIGUEL MORALES 13 Energetic and melancholic melodies, taking us for a ride on never expected paths. A dazzling permanent succession of feelings of sadness and joy, responding to one another. The Giulia Valle Group is all about musical storytelling. For the audience, it’s just fascinating and feels very good. Behind her double bass, Giulia seems like a frail woman. Her musical compositions say otherwise : this band leader’s musical voice is grand and allows each of the musicians to contribute and express his own voice. Giulia Valle gathered exceptional jazzmen around her, like sax and flute master Gorka Benitez. ‘Danza Imprevista’ is the recently‐ released Giulia Valle Group’s second album. And the title is right on the money : danza/dancing is taking place on every level – between the musicians’ musical lines, dancing between the mixed sentiments of sadness and joy, and the invitation to physically dance on the music’s glorious rhythms – and imprevista/unplanned is precisely the feeling that makes us eager to follow the compositions, although this unplanned feeling is induced by music carefully and incredibly well planned. Thank you, Giulia ! www.giuliavalle.com www.myspace.com/giuliavalle Carlton Hotel, Salon Zéphyr (550) 00.30 > 01.30 Xavier Dotras Trio Spain ● Picap Xavier Dotras – piano Cesar Martinez – drums Toni Pujol – double bass © DR And here’s a bona fide perfect jazz trio. Selected by MIDEM for this exceptional Catalan Jazz Night, the Xavier Dotras Trio recorded three albums, in 2004, 2006 and 2009. The last album is called ‘Vincent,’ as an hommage to the painter Vincent van Gogh, and features the gentle voice of Carme Canela. Basque sax and flute star, and Giulia Valle Group member Gorka Benitez also took part in several of this trio’s recordings (come on Gorka, would you please join the guys on stage !?) Xavier Dotras’ music is very melodic and fluid, with a clear piano sound up front. Each of the three instruments seem to leave as much musical space as possible for the other two, in a sensitive musical dialog. It’s cosy and nice. If you’re a guitarist – and a virtuoso finger‐picking one at that – it’s catastrophic. The slow recovery process turned out in his favour : the delay meant he could write a few more killer songs, including ‘Badman’ and sun‐flecked rootsy ‘Lipstick Jungle.’ For all his alchemical brilliance on the guitar, Faulkner wanted to bring more sonic colours to his palette: listen out for dexterous use of synths, strings, and that bass melodica specially imported from America.
