Zuluboy has performed and recorded with numerous artists including Tumi and the Volume, Jah Seed, Young Nations, Guru, Jay‐Z and more. He has done workshops in Europe with participants ranging from 15 to 25 years old on ethnic music and rap compositions, using 'equal chances' as a theme. She did not get any formal education, because her family could not afford her schooling, and used to sign her contracts with an X, until her third album. In 1994, she performed at the introduction of the first South African Black president, Nelson Mandela. When Akon, Kanye West, 50 Cent, The Game and Nas came to South Africa, Jozi was instantaneously called upon to open for these international Hip Hop 4
artists. The group really made their mark when they won the Best Live Performance at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards. Ever since she burst into the public’s consciousness as the lead vocalist and song writer of award winning group Bongo Maffin, Thandiswa Mazwai has been an indelible part of the South African cultural landscape. The band became widely recognized as the voice of South Africa’s conscious youth, was invited to perform all over the world and shared the stage with musical icons such as Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. As a solo artist, amongst many recognitions, Thandiswa was awarded Best Female Artist at the 2005 South Africa Music Awards. Now 33 years old, Black Coffee is one of the most respected names on the local dance scene and one of South Africa’s best known DJ/producers internationally. Through his own label, Soulistic Music, he recently released a third album ‘Home Brewed,’ full of tasty, deep, soulful house sounds. ‘I didn't want people to feel pity for me, or single me out as “that DJ with one hand.” I wanted to make my mark, not as the disabled DJ but as Black Coffee. An accomplished guitarist, percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader and performer, Mahlasela has bridged generations at home and abroad. Hafdís Huld toured the world as a 15 year old, with iconic Icelandic band GusGus. She later studied at the London Centre of Contemporary Music, graduating with Distinction in 2006. Her debut album ‘Dirty Paper Cup’ was released in 2006 and won the Best Pop Album Award at the Icelandic Music Awards. Then Hafdís attended venues and festivals across the UK and Europe. She was one of the guest vocalists on Tricky's 2008 album ‘Knowle West Boy’ and in 2009 she recorded her second solo album ‘Synchronised Swimmers’. She was first noticed in 2006 with a home recorded album. And 2008 ‘Monday’s Ghost’ is her first studio work. Charm rushes at once right from the first title ‘Shape.’ Sophie Hunger’s stunning voice catches attention on the spot. Energetic and melancholic melodies, taking us for a ride on never expected paths. A dazzling permanent succession of feelings of sadness and joy, responding to one another. The Giulia Valle Group is all about musical storytelling. For the audience, it’s just fascinating and feels very good. Behind her double bass, Giulia seems like a frail woman. Her musical compositions say otherwise : this band leader’s musical voice is grand and allows each of the musicians to contribute and express his own voice. Giulia Valle gathered exceptional jazzmen around her, like sax and flute master Gorka Benitez. ‘Danza Imprevista’ is the recently‐
released Giulia Valle Group’s second album. And the title is right on the money : danza/dancing is taking place on every level – between the musicians’ musical lines, dancing between the mixed sentiments of sadness and joy, and the invitation to physically dance on the music’s glorious rhythms – and imprevista/unplanned is precisely the feeling that makes us eager to follow the compositions, although this unplanned feeling is induced by music carefully and incredibly well planned. Selected by MIDEM for this exceptional Catalan Jazz Night, the Xavier Dotras Trio recorded three albums, in 2004, 2006 and 2009. The last album is called ‘Vincent,’ as an hommage to the painter Vincent van Gogh, and features the gentle voice of Carme Canela. Basque sax and flute star, and Giulia Valle Group member Gorka Benitez also took part in several of this trio’s recordings (come on Gorka, would you please join the guys on stage !?) Xavier Dotras’ music is very melodic and fluid, with a clear piano sound up front. Each of the three instruments seem to leave as much musical space as possible for the other two, in a sensitive musical dialog. It’s cosy and nice. Schillings sound‐designed fashion shows for Karl Lagerfeld and Céline and also events for Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Chopard and Armani. Signed to Pschent since 1996 and mixing the ‘Overground House’ compilations, Charles Schillings also produced and recorded his own music. In 1998, Olivier co‐created the label Goodlife, giving birth to a series of EP’s and remixes and leading to a busy worldwide DJ diary. In 2004 Oxia released his debut solo album ‘24 heures,’ a first full album floating between groovy melodic techno and deep electro. A collaboration with Atkins, ‘Triangle of Love’ was released under the pseudonym Kreem. The Inner City project is a another collaboration that came about by accident with singer Paris Grey, who came up with the lyrics of ‘Big Fun.’ This worldwide smash was only to be outsold by Inner City's follow‐up single ‘Good Life.’ Over the years, Inner City has had around 12 Top 40 hits in the UK and two Top 20 albums. Then with the E‐Dancer project, Saunderson creates music that is more underground. If you enjoy warm latin music and singing, come and listen to MidemTalent ‘Depedro.’ You’ll be swept away by Jairo Zavala’s Spanish plaintive and generous voice, simple feel good guitar melodies and a quiet and gorgeous low key brass section. Zavala is partly accompanied in his singing by a great set of male voices, or a female solo, from bluesy mood to flamenco‐based inspiration. Guitars carry rhythms with grace, horns, bass and percussions set a recurring tone, a few keyboards and electric guitars inputs bring the whole mood to a few psychedelic moments. Some orchestrations seem to bring Morricone/Leone’s ‘spaghetti’ West back and some say Tarentino ought to be a fan of Depedro’s atmospheric world. And glasses that reflect cats. These are the only real facts we can offer you about a man whose biography gives him polar bear parents. There is an eccentricity that you can also hear in his music. The man is a solo artist out of West London whom is quickly turning some heads with happy ears attached to them. Previously in the band ‘Adventure Playground,’ King Charles is now on his own and has delivered a first single title, ‘Time Of Eternity,’ via Mi7 Records. The song starts off fairly sweet and nice with acoustic guitars and his spoken word/singing barrage of lyrics style. Then it escalates with swells of energy and spirit, highlighted by some Animal Collective/My Girls‐esque ‘whoos’ in a fiery red smoke background. This song is… shall we say splendiferous ? This was celebrated producer Siggi Loch’s very first signed band. Although ‘Passport’ has never stopped recording and performing, composer and arranger Klaus Doldinger remains the only member of the original band still playing in the current formation. When listening back to the original 70’s albums, you (re)discover a stunning and quite groundbreaking sound, mixing spacey electronic jazz with rock, free inspiration following completely melodic lines. Curt Cress delivers a vigorous crystal clear acoustic drum set tone, and yet Cress was one of the first drummers to experiment with electronic drums. Kristian Schultze's use of synth and mellotron provided an expansive orchestral sound. And bassist Wolfgang Schmid's classical guitar knowledge adds a nice range and dimension to the band’s work. Six amazing musicians gather for Act Music producer Siggi Loch’s jubilee night party. We got Nils Landgren’s smooth and clear voice with his warm and round trombone tone, extending his sophisticated musical arrangements – with many instruments inputs and sound bits – up to a groovy funk unit inspiration. On piano, harpsichord or celesta, Michael Wollny’s notes seem to descend gently like rain drops just filling the air. Exceptionally versatile drummer and percussion programmer Wolfgang Haffner will join also, with an amazing musical range from classical blues to fast sophisticated rhythms or even extremely powerful dancing club beats. After a memorable performance on the ‘2009 Midem Talent Jazz’ stage, Frøy Aagre is back with her adventurous arrangements and lyrical saxophone melodies.
