Sunday’s Reflection
This weekend, twelve of our catechumens, who
have been preparing for the past one year in our
religious education programmed, will be admitted to
Holy Communion for the first time. Moreover, as part
of preparation for this process, the candidates have also
availed themselves of the opportunity to receive the
sacrament of penance for the first time. The second
aspect of the process is a traditional—though not
exclusive way—of preparing for the reception of the
sacraments, especially Holy Communion. A lot went
into this weekend’s sacramental activities. In the first
place, it would not have been possible without the
willingness of parents and families to subject
themselves as well as their wards to the process. Even at
that, the catechists were the primary instruments that
made the occasion possible. Markedly, in the reception
of the sacraments, there are two principal moments:
preparation and actual reception. For our first
communion candidates, a majority of whom have
reached the age of reason, preparation began even long
before they stepped into the first religious education
session. It started when their parents made it known to
them that they would be enlisted in that process, as
part of their immersion into the Catholic faith
tradition. Because the Eucharist, together with the
sacraments of baptism and confirmation are the
sacraments of full Christian initiation, our first
communicants this weekend could be said to be
approaching that stage in which all that is necessary for
adult Christian life would be at their disposal.
I now want to return to the role of parents in
the religious education of their children, which I have
already mentioned. An occasion such as this weekend
should be regarded as a most opportune time to do so.
Parents have an indispensable role to play in the
education of their education, including the imparting
of religious knowledge. Admittedly, the preparation for
the sacraments is only one way of doing that. Yet,
because we Catholics live sacramental Christianity,
parents must never treat the sacramental preparation of
their children as a light matter. In several respects, it is
the pathway to a more fruitful adult Christian life as
Catholics. There is one question which every Catholic
must constantly answer: what do I value in my
participation in the faith community? What is the place
of the sacraments in what you claim or choose to value?
If the sacraments have no place in a person’s life, then
devoting time and resources to their reception would
make no meaning. If, on the other hand, we concede that
the sacraments are the principle means by which we live
the Christian life to the full, it is all the more reason why
parents and families must do all that they can to ensure
that values about sacramental Christianity are imparted
to their children in a manner that is suitable to their
needs. In the future, when the realities of the Christian
life in twenty-first century set in, they would not be
lacking any foundational basis to boldly engage with that
reality.

SANTO DE LA SEMANA:
Peregrino Laziosi
(1265-1345, Día de Fiesta, primero de Mayo. En el año
de 1283, San Felipe Benicio, entonces prior general de los
Siervos de María, cuando trataba de conducir a los
ciudadanos de Forlí. Sujetos a entredicho, a la obediencia
de la Sede Apostólica, fue arrojado con golpes e insultos
de aquella ciudad. Mientras san Felipe, como fiel imitador
de Cristo, rogaba pos sus perseguidores, uno de ellos, un
joven de dieciocho años y de distinguida familia, llamado
Peregrino Laziosi, arrepentido, fue a pedirle
humildemente perdón. El piadoso Padre lo recibió
afablemente. Desde entonces, aquel joven empezó a
despreciar las vanidades del mundo y a invocar con fervor
a la Virgen para que le mostrara el camino de la salvación.
No mucho tiempo después, favorecido por una especial
iluminación de nuestra Señora, acudió al convento de los
Siervos en Siena, en donde, después acudió al convento
de los Siervos de Siena, en donde, después de vestir con
gran devoción el habito de la Virgen, se entregó con ardor
a su servicio. Allí, con la ayuda del beato Francisco de
Siena, se fue ejercitando en el estilo de vida y normas de
los Siervos de María. Algunos años más tarde, fue enviado
de nuevo a Forlí, Allí, lleno del amor de Dios y de nuestra
Señora, se dedicaba sin tregua a recitar salmos, himnos y
oraciones, amén de la meditación de la palabra de Dios;
su ardiente amor al prójimo lo impulsaba a socorrer a los
pobres en sus necesidades, abriéndoles los tesoros de la
caridad. Así, más de una vez plugo al Señor otorgar sus
dones a los necesitados por intercesión del Santo. Se
cuenta que san Peregrino, ante el desolador espectáculo
de la escasez de víveres en Forlí y en toda la región de
Romaña, multiplicó milagrosamente el vino y el trigo.
También se destacó Peregrino por su espíritu de
penitencia: derramaba copiosas lágrimas al recordar sus
pecados y se confesaba con frecuencia; mortificaba su
cuerpo con toda clase de penitencias; a consecuencia del
tal rigor, cuando frisaba con los sesenta años, fue
acometido por un voraz cáncer originado por una llaga
varicosa que padecía en la pierna derecha. Al día
siguiente cuando el doctor hiba a emputar la pierna
quedo atónito de que estaba restaurada. mortificaba su
cuerpo con toda clase de penitencias; a consecuencia del
tal rigor, cuando frisaba con los sesenta años, fue
acometido por un voraz cáncer originado por una llaga
varicosa que padecía en la pierna derecha.
Al día siguiente cuando el doctor hiba a emputar la pierna
quedo atónito de que estaba restaurada. Tal prodigio contribuyó a acrecentar la veneración que todos sentían por Peregrino. Él por su parte, crecía cada día en perfección y en el
deseo de los bienes celestiales. Finalmente, aquejado por una
altísima fiebre, cuando se acercaba a los ochenta años, entregó su alma a Dios en el año 1345. Extraordinaria fue la
afluencia de gente ante su féretro. Se cuenta que algunos
enfermos obtuvieron la salud por intercesión de Peregrino.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION and YOUTH
GROUP: will meet again on May 15. Religious
Education meets from 10:30 a.m. through 11:30
a.m.. The last two meetings of the Youth Group
will hold on May 15 and May 22nd during the
morning Rel. Ed. from 10:30a.m. through
11:30a.m., respectively.
SAINT OF THE WEEK:
Peregrine Laziosi
(1265-1345, Feast Day May 1) This well-to-do
young Italian assaulted the Service superior general
whom the pope had sent to make peace between
feuding political factions in northern Italy. But he
was so moved by the Services Christian response
that he repented and in 1292 joined the Services in
Siena. A prayerful and charitable friar, he was devoted to Mary. In 1322, he founded a new Service
house in Forli, his hometown. He said Mass and
preached fervently, and was known for his spiritual
direction. When doctors decided to amputate his
right foot because of a cancerous open sore, Peregrine prayed a long time the night before the surgery and awoke with his foot healed. Canonized in
1726, he is an intercessor for those battling cancer.

May 1st, the Sixth Sunday of Easter
SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY:
Were you ever confused or in doubt about what you
should do about a situation? Or felt relief when someone showed you how God was working in your life?
What about when someone offered to pray for you or
for a loved one and your heart swelled with gratitude?
Perhaps your inclination was to thank God for the presence of that person in your life. Maybe you didn’t think
about it for a while but eventually you were able to see
the workings of the Holy Spirit bringing you closer to
God.
The Spiritual Works of Mercy are an example of
how God loves us. Through them, God prompts us to
care for and encourage one another in our daily lives.
Our families are yearning for us to show them that
God’s love is immediate. Jesus showed us that we may
be present and do the Father’s Will by serving each other in truth and kindness. The Spiritual Works of Mercy
give us clues to how we can easily do this each day!
What Does the Catechism of the Catholic Church
say? The Spiritual Works draw a line between being
nosy and helping our neighbor to live as God calls us to
live. God asks us to be respectful but truthful in our
relationships. We are called to be instruments of love,
peace and kindness. “The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our
neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are spiritual works
of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently.
The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry, sheltering the home-less, clothing the
naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying
the dead. Among all these, giving alms to the poor is
one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a
work of justice pleasing to God …” (¶ 2447) - Beth

DOCTRINES FOR LIFE:
Option for the Poor
Catholic social teaching inspires and
guides how we are to live and work in the
world. In this principle, Option for the Poor, Jesus tells
us to care for those who are most in need. He reminds us of our Christian duty to give a voice to
those who are unheard and to help those who are
most vulnerable.
Fighting between armed forces made life in Cumbitara, Colombia, dangerous for Maria and her familyso dangerous that 8 years ago they were forced to relocate. They left their home one morning with nothing
but a suitcase of clothes. It wasn’t easy making a new
life in Nariño, a region of Colombia known for its
coffee. People made fun of Maria and her family because they were outsiders. It was also hard to find
work, and Maria’s father left home for months at a
time to do dangerous work in a mine.
All that changed when the family bought a little
piece of land through the CRS Borderlands project.
On it, they grow gourmet coffee that is sold in the
United States. And Maria, now 18 years old, is passionate about coffee too. She was chosen for a special
program and is earning a degree in farming. Now she
has a new career goal: to help neighboring coffee
farmers make a living growing the best coffee possible. - CRS

of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm,
may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord
Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
