Volume 2 - Issue 3
Rabbi Gelberman's Legacy and Sacred Activism
By Rev. R.M.Peluso
Life happens; plans change. The current issue of
Interfaith Today was scheduled to cover the many
faces of Sacred Activism. But the passing of a
spiritual giant like Rabbi Joseph H. Gelberman forces
us to pause and reflect.
Let me start with profound gratitude. Were it not
for Rabbi's foundational work, I would not be editing
an Interfaith journal or serving on the staff of The
Interfaith Temple or performing sacred ceremonies.
Because someone had to hatch the idea of Interfaith.
World history was ripe. A survivor of a calamity healed himself then
turned to heal the world. Tikkun olam. Repairing the world. A
Kabbalistic concept the Rabbi was to take from the small canvas of
everyday acts to be painted large through the lives of the thousands he
would touch.
One-on-one, Rabbi was a quiet, cheerful, centered presence. In front of
a group, he moved people to tears, laughter, to sing, to dance. Above all,
he urged us to live fearlessly, to love unconditionally, to always be
joyous, to greet each day with enthusiasm, to be inspired and inspire
others. His insistence on these principles led him to reach out, to join
with people of all faiths, all races, all nationalities, unconditionally,
because, he would remind us, if you believe we have one God, one
father, then we are all sisters and brothers. Such simple words shatter
the illusion of duality and "other." Once we take this concept to heart,
we are moved to compassion and to work for justice and human
dignity.
So the examples of Sacred Activism that we introduce in this issue are

Ministry in Prisons

greatest rewards is to witness the light of hope ignite in

book and couldn't put it down. UnlikeThe Da Vinci Code,
which is in a similar genre, your novel was a spiritual

striking.
