The 60,000 sf recreation center includes both large and small gyms, strength and
cardio rooms, multi-purpose space, locker rooms, and aquatic center. New and
existing recreation fields were provided or upgraded. Architekton coordinated
the site plans of new nearby housing and dining projects being designed by others, also building entries and architectural character for those projects. Project
registered for LEED Gold.

Programming, master planning and design for the 62,000 sf recreation center.
Includes large and small gyms, indoor running track, strength and cardio rooms,
multi-purpose space, locker rooms, bike co-op, social gaming area, wellness center, and aquatic center to serve recreation and competition needs. New recreation fields and renovation of an existing grass quad and pedestrian mall extensions provided as part of the LEED Gold registered project.

Grand Canyon University | Phoenix AZ
Recreation Center
Master planning services to develop a plan to increase the capacity of the University from 1,400 to 5,000 students. Project included a 55,000 sf Recreation Center
for the student body and training facility for their basketball teams. The result is
three regulation courts, athlete locker/team rooms to support recruiting, training
room/offices, fitness facilities, classrooms, and coaches locker facilities. Delivered in 11 months, supports the GCU’s bid to move from Division 2 to Division 1.

Fitness & Wellness Center
A sculptural, climate responsive aesthetic creates a dynamic addition to the
community college campus. Programmatic requirements of aerobic studios,
circuit room, free-weights area, lockers, classrooms, and an indoor jogging track
were strong determinants of the form of this facility. The efficiency of the costeffective pre-engineered building is expressed in the choice of building materials
that create a form that contradicts the traditional image of this building type.

Ross Farnsworth East Valley YMCA
The new East Valley YMCA is the wellness and fitness center for the A.T. Still
University Campus and the surrounding community. The center is a two-story
structure and splits into two buildings flanking an open-air pedestrian mall. The
design features of the recreation center include campus programs on the first
floor, actively interweaving the campus with the YMCA. The 27,000 sf facility
includes a gymnasium, cardio and strength training, aerobics studio/spin room,
climbing wall, locker rooms, recreation and lap pool, and child watch.

Desert Foothills Family YMCA
Project built through a public/private/non-profit partnership between Paradise
Valley Community College, the Valley of the Sun YMCA and the Foothills Community Foundation. The 48,000 sf complex includes recreation and multi-purpose
spaces. The partners bring a newly imaged concept for access to essential lifespectrum resources and opportunities on one site.

Rio Vista Recreation Center
The 51,000 sf athletic center features a multipurpose gymnasium, two racquetball courts, classrooms, multipurpose room, fitness center, aerobics and dance
studio, elevated running track, climbing wall, sports fields, catering kitchen, and
dining area. The project added a pedestrian bridge, Veteran’s memorial, park
concession and maintenance facilities, lighted parking, extensive audiovisual and
CCTV surveillance systems. The design build team was awarded the 2008 Construction Owners’ of America Best Project Leadership Gold Award.

Tumbleweed Recreation Center
The 62,000 sf Recreation Center was designed to reflect its existing rural/agricultural setting. The building’s external appearance is a playful abstraction of
the hay bale stacks and their protective shelters. The fitness, recreational and
educational programs are organized around a central courtyard and are linked
visually by a circuitous elevated jogging track. Concrete masonry and galvanized
corrugated siding provide and reinforce the agricultural aesthetic.

The facility was conceived to entice people driving by and once inside the front
door reveal the building’s programmatic components. The building’s sculptural
quality reflects the internal flexible volumes. Glazing is strategically located to
mitigate the harsh sun, but allow views from a variety of vantage points to begin
the “sale” of the organization’s mission. The building’s components are wrapped
around a central courtyard that has a myriad of programmatic opportunities.

Southwest Valley Regional YMCA
Adjacent to a high school natatorium, the YMCA anchors the southern portion
of the uniquely shaped site. The facility includes a climbing wall, aerobics center,
locker rooms, a licensed child-watch room, teen center, multipurpose building,
community meeting room, and outdoor play area. Pools were sited to adjoin a
Park to maximize use. The result is an innovative development that enhances the
image and quality of services for the people living in the area.

Escalante Multi-Generational Center
The Center is located in the heart of its neighborhood and serves a wide range
of users, encompassing diverse cultures, ages and income levels. The challenge
was to integrate new program space with an existing pool and bathhouse, and an
existing recreation facility. The solution was to wrap the new facility around and
behind the pool, with three primary programmatic elements being located at the
extremities of the plan. These functions were then linked by common use spaces.

Pecos Community Center
The project includes a variety of programs and services at one location for the
surrounding neighborhoods. The Recreation Center includes a fitness program,
gymnasium, public meeting space and classrooms, and administration area. The
design reconciles the variety of existing park programs through four separate
entries that link to the park. The architecture responds to the existing aesthetic
through graphic use of integrally colored split-face masonry.

Westside Multi-Generational Center
The City of Tempe has transformed and rejuvenated an existing Boys & Girls Club
and gymnasium into a dynamic new Center. The gymnasium was preserved and
now functions as an internalized court: the center of activity. The remaining facility was demolished and new programmatic uses were built in its place. New uses
embrace the existing gymnasium mass, softening its impact on its surroundings.
Inside, a narrow perimeter skylight creates a “halo” of light where old meets new.

Multigenerational Center & Aquatics
This multigenerational and aquatic center provides an eight lane competition
pool and a recreation pool with a splash pad, lazy river, slides, diving well, climbing wall, with water volleyball and aerobics. The 52,000 sf facility includes a double-court gymnasium, dance studio, fitness center, walking track, multipurpose/
mini-banquet rooms, catering kitchen and child watch center. The facility is an
activity hub for the community and is the focal point of the regional master plan
that reflects the rich history of Maricopa.
Phoenix Country Day School NE Campus Revitalization
Aquatics Center + Gym Expansion
Architekton provided Recreation Master Planning services and the design of
two new fitness facilities for the campus. The new aquatic center includes a new
50-meter competitive pool, a 25-meter athletic pool, dive tank, bath house,
classroom, coaches office, public restrooms, and men and women locker facilities. A new gymnasium is currently under construction and will support the entire
campus along with four new tennis courts and associated site work.
