The Focal PoinT - Kehilath Israel Synagogue
KEHILATH ISRAEL’S swwoc The Focal Point Vol. 45, Issue 12 December 2009 First, I would thank the Board of Directors of our synagogue for offering and granting Barbara and myself a five month sabbatical at the end of December in recognition of 32+ years of service to our synagogue as your spiritual leader. The last time we had a “mini” sabbatical was back in 1986 and 1987 when I was granted two, three months summer vacations over two years. At that time our children ranged from age 2 through 15 and to show you how the years “fly away”, they now range from age 25 to 38! I had always hoped for a sabbatical such as this where I might teach or do some research; however, because of the short notice of this period of time, that was impossible to arrange. Therefore, we will be spending quite a bit of that time with our four children and their families. Aron, his wife and five children live in Houston. Seth and his wife and daughter live in New York City. Debbie is just finishing law school this month in Chicago. Miriam is in Israel. We will probably spend a month in Israel and a few days in Egypt and much of the rest of the time just visiting with our children around the country. I do hope to do some reading and studying as well as I am working on a ritual history of our congregation, so that in the future, rabbis and leaders of Kehilath Israel Synagogue will be aware not just of our general history, but the history of our rituals and customs as well. Speaking of ritual, I would like to thank Morty Lewkowsky for many years of service as our senior gabbai and chairman of our ritual committee. Morty is now into his 90’s and not able to attend on a regular basis as he did not that long ago. Arnie Caviar, our president has appointed Morty “honorary senior gabbai for life.” That position was held by only one other senior gabbai and that was the late Kurt Levi, of blessed memory. Morty will be entitled to sit on the bimah and participate in any way he possibly can in the future. With Morty’s retirement as full time senior gabbai and chairman of the ritual committee, Arnold has appointed Trent Daniels who has been working hard in helping Morty for the last couple of years as senior gabbai and Dr. Michael Sokol, one of our vice-presidents, as chairman of the ritual committee. Dr. Sokol is well versed in Jewish law and tradition and will serve well in that capacity. continued on page 6 Kislev-Tevet 5770 Remembering the Past, Making New Memories and Planning for the Future In being President of Kehilath Israel Synagogue for five years, I do appreciate the 90% or more of the congregation who understand what I have tried to accomplish. I am what I am. I’m very unique, so I’ve been told. Yes, I’m different. Absolutely - I did not do this for the thank yous. Carol and I give contributions to worthy charitable and non-profit organizations because to us, it’s the right thing to do. This goes into how many good and how many not so good things I remember. Some of the best memories, for Carol and me culminate at the 100 Year Anniversary and Grand Givers 33 – coincidentally my old basketball number. I remember growing up seeing many Jewish people congregating in Swope Park. Sometimes we would sleep in the park because the heat was so oppressive. I remember the old timers playing cards - those were such good times. That’s where I learned Texas Rummy and Gin Rummy from my uncles. The younger set, those ages five to ten years old, would play the line game, which would be closest to the line with mils, pennies, nickels, dimes and eventually to quarters. I vaguely remember riding the train, which had to be before my Bar Mitzvah, to Chicago and thought what a neat thing to do. We were going to visit my mother’s sister. These were good times, fun times. I remember my Bar Mitzvah at 63rd & Rockhill Road. I was told by some of the learned ones, I didn’t make a mistake in my Haftorah. The only thing I remember about my continued on page 7 WHAT’S INSIDE Shabbat Schedule......................................................................2 Rabbi Bauman’s Message.........................................................2 Cantor Shron’s Message...........................................................2 Anniversaries.............................................................................4 Birthdays....................................................................................4 Memorial Tablets.....................................................................19 Donations..................................................................................20 December Calendar.................................................................23 SHABBAT SCHEDULE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4 Candlelighting*...............4:38 P.M. CANTOR’S CORNER Dear Congregational Family, Today, for better and for worse, many Jews consider Zionism and Judaism synonymous, but this was not always the case. In the late 19th century, when some European Jews began supporting and organizing the mass settlement of Palestine, they were criticized from almost every position on the Jewish religious spectrum. Daniel Septimus, the Editor-in-Chief of MyJewishLearning. com, articulates the historical positions regarding Zionism and the State of Israel. “From the ultra-orthodox point of view, the Zionists were revolting against G-d's will. The ingathering of the exiles, it was believed, was to be a prominent feature of the messianic age, but it was supposed to be initiated by G-d, not humankind. Classical teachings warned against "hastening the end"--trying to urge on the redemption--and Zionism was viewed as violating this taboo. Additionally, the Zionist leadership was overwhelmingly secular; thus, from a religious viewpoint, their project was fundamentally tainted.” “The religious left also questioned Zionism. The Reform leadership embraced the opportunity to be European citizens, and therefore their religious outlook stressed universalism and the unity of humankind. Traditionally, the goal of Jewish history was a messianic return to Israel, but the reformers had the opposite view: Jewish history started in the Land of Israel, but was intended to spread outward. Judaism was a religion--not a nation--with a mission to proliferate morality. Going to Palestine to form a particularistic Jewish society was, therefore, blasphemous, because it countered everything the Jewish religion was meant to accomplish.” We live in a day and age where extreme positions seem only to come have been told one time or another to be quiet and listen. I know that I certainly have on more than one occasion. What exactly does that statement mean? To me, it means that while I am doing the talking I will not be able to fully comprehend what is being conveyed to me. A good salesman knows that making the sale involves ten per cent talking and ninety per cent listening. Our Torah conveys the same message in the opening words, Sh’ma Yisrael. In order for us to fully comprehend the magnitude and importance of the words that follow, we need to be listening attentively, or what is commonly known as “active listening.” This is how we learn and how we gain another perspective on life. We are told that if one studies alone, one never expands his knowledge past his own limited experiences, and therefore, should always have a study partner. The same advice can be applied to our davening at services. The sages created a give and take situation between the kehillah (the congregation) and the hazzan. The congregation has an opportunity to recite the prayers privately, but also is instructed to listen to the hazzan sing them aloud. This is evident is the recitation of the Amidah – the silent devotion. The congregation first recites it privately to themselves, but then is instructed to listen to the hazzan chant it publicly. The active listening as an integral part of the public recitation of the sh’moneh esray is mandated through the congregational responses that occur throughout. The answering of amen to all of the blessings, the public proclamations of the kedusha and the modim are all a part of this spiritual conversation, this give-and-take, this active listening and responding between the congregation and hazzan. It’s as if we are being advised, “you had an opportunity to express your emotions, you had the opportunity to say the words your way, continued on page 6 continued on page 9 www.kisyn.org I’m sure that all of you December 2009/Kislev - Tevet 5770 LAWS AND CUSTOMS OF CHANUKAH This year the first night of Chanukah falls on Friday, December 11 and the last night of Chanukah falls on Friday, December 18. We always make sure that we light the Chanukah candles before sundown and before the Sabbath candles are lit. It is better not to light the Chanukah candles at all on Friday night than to light them after dark which is a violation of the Sabbath laws. The three blessings below are recited on the first night immediately PRIOR to the lighting of the candles (not while lighting them). The third blessing “Sheh-heh-cheh-yanu” is recited only on the first day of each holiday in the Jewish year. On all other nights, we recite only the first two blessings. Chanukah candles are placed from right to left side until finally on the eighth night, the Chanukiah is full. We light the newest candle first; therefore, we always begin by kindling the candle at the left and proceed toward the right. On Saturday night, December 12, any time after Havdalah at 5:34 p.m., it is permissible to light the Chanukah menorah (Chanukiah). Jewish law requires that on every night of Chanukah, the candles must burn at least one half hour after dark. Since on Friday night we must light the Chanukah candles before Sabbath candlelighting (4:39 p.m. on December 11 and 4:41 p.m. on December 18), it is traditional to use larger candles such as Shabbat candles or tall tapers for the Chanukiah itself. For Chanukah, one might light either an oil or a candle menorah, the only requirement being that whichever type December 2009/Kislev-Tevet 5770 of light is used, that it be clear and bright. There has been a great deal of discussion as to the use of an electric Chanukiah. Since it is not definite as to whether or not an electric menorah fulfills the obligation of the lighting of Chanukah lights, it is best to avoid the use of such a Chanukiah, except for purely decorative purposes. In general, on a weekday night other than Sabbath night, the Chanukah candles are to be lit approximately at dark. If, however, one is not at home or this time is inconvenient, they can be lit at any time during the entire night. If one has to leave home prior to dark and may not return for the rest of the evening, the Chanukah candles may be lit about an hour before dark, provided that Chanukah lights will burn for a short period of time after dark. The Chanukah candles are to be lit simply for religious reasons and are not to be used for any secular purposes such as lighting other objects, reading lights, etc. However, this limited use of the light applies only during the first half-hour of their burning. The rabbis of old determined that the required burning time of a Chanukah candle is one half hour, and after that time, they may be used for any other purpose or even extinguished. It is customary to place the Chanukiah in the window of one’s home, on the main table around which the family gathers, near the door, or any place where lighting of the candles will become a public event. www.kisyn.org CONGREGANTS’ DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS DECEMBER ANNIVERSARIES 1 Cheryl & Larry Silverman (41) 3 Lisa & Seth Gortenburg (4) 7 Shirley & Todd Stettner (34) 9 Sonia & Max Singer (31) 10 Robyn Jacobs & Daniel Rosenbloom (4) 16 Lori & Mitchell Gold(14) 17 Stella & Robert Hoffman (59) Sharon Kohn & Richard Simon (20) 19 Joyce & Stanford Zeldin (44) 21 Helen & Daniel Guckenheimer (40) 26 Faina & Alan Buberman (16) 27 Leslee & Jerrold Gottlieb (39) Susan & Steven Osman (40) 28 Lois & Emanuel Winston (57) 29 Olga & Marvin Krug (63) Marion & Joseph Rosen (63) Celia & Sylvester Sher (52) We want to wish a Happy Birthday to all of the following congregants who are celebrating birthdays: Liz Friedman, Dmitry Kapustin, Joseph Schifman, Linda Silver, Alan Buberman, Brenda McKinnon, Jerome Smith, Eugene Strauss, Nanci Bucksner, Jonathan Kaplan, Lynn Kuluva, Mary Covitz, Ruth Kraft, Anna Levina, Jenny Madlof, Jacqueline Rosenstock, Rose Levine, Harold Shorr, Linda Zack, Linda Cohn, Robyn Jacobs, Eugene Lipsky, Alexander Belingloph, Helen Lesky, Bonnie Siegel, Ida Mae Blackman, Harold Magariel, Sandra Romer, Martha Fleitman, Alex Horowitz, Mitchell Trope, Milly Zeff, Lea Rozenberg, Marcie Kaplan, Rachel Towle, Sheila Rosmarine, Sidney Cohn, Bronia Roslawowski, Maurice Soltz, Robert Glueck, Stanley Madlof, Joel Zitron, Arnold Caviar, Riva Lewis, Sam Pollock, Debra Entine, Anna Bashmakov, S. P.O. Box 336 Olathe, KS 66051 Rabbi Mandl continued from page 1..... Finally, I would like to begin to update you about what is happening with the Vaad Hakashrut here in Kansas City. That is the organization which controls kashrut for the entire metro area. I helped found that organization I am guessing somewhere between 15 and 18 years ago. It began very small and has grown tremendously over the years due to the many commercial plants, and kosher facilities and hotels in the metro area. We now have a number of employees. I have been the chairman of the Vaad and the rabbi of BIAV, presently Rabbi Daniel Rockoff, is the supervising rabbi. Over the years the Vaad has been kind of mysterious to many people and often has been a source of some irritation due to both people not understanding how it operated and frankly not a good organizational structure. The Vaad Board of Directors had not met for several years and there was a certain amount of ‘looseness’ of operation. Recently with the help of Todd Stettner, Executive VicePresident and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federation, and one of our members, a major reorganization of the Vaad Hakashrut has occurred. There is now a fairly large, but yet manageable Board of Directors. The acting president of the organization is our own Karen Pack. The financial affairs of the Vaad are now being professionally managed and I look forward to very positive things coming from this reorganization plan. Bruce Daniels, another K.I. member, actually born and raised in the congregation, serves as the Administrator of the Vaad and has been in that capacity for the past few years. I will keep you apprised about further developments within the Vaad. Even though I will be gone for the next few months, I will continue to write my column for the Focal Point and keep you apprised of where we are and what is going on in our lives. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Herbert J. Mandl, PhD Rabbi Bauman continued from page 2..... from the far-right of a given issue. The history of Zionism teaches that if either the extreme right or the extreme left were to have its way then perhaps we would not have the modern State of Israel. So to which of these perspectives do we at K.I. subscribe? Our position is best understood by the statement of principles of the Union for Traditional Judaism: “Redemption--We share the age-old dreams for messianic deliverance and trust that ultimate redemption will come when G-d sees fit. We see in History the unfolding of this divine promise and regard the establishment and development of the State of Israel as a step toward its fulfillment. We are fortunate to live in a time when we can actively participate as partners in this process.” This approach maintains the religious dream of a messianic homeland and existence for our people who have withstood so much hardship throughout history. At the same time it understands that the messianic dream comes about as people actively work towards the development of the Jewish homeland. Today, we celebrate both 60 plus years since the establishment of the modern State of Israel and the 100th anniversary of Kehilath Israel Synagogue. Consider for a moment that when our beloved synagogue, K.I. was founded 100 years ago the State of Israel was simply a dream. Today, as we celebrate our 100th anniversary we also celebrate a vibrant, western democracy that is blossoming into a reality that we could never have imagined 100 years ago. To this end, I would like to extend an invitation to you to join me and my family on the Kehilath Israel Family Adventure Mission to Israel, May 30, 2010 through June 10, 2010. For those interested please contact me at either rabbidavid@kisyn.org or 913.642.1880 x 212. Rabbi David Bauman 6 www.kisyn.org December 2009/Kislev - Tevet 5770 President continued from page 1..... speech was I had to memorize it. I stared at the exit sign and my voice was probably a monotone the entire speech. I remember at home, having cake, tripping on something and my elbow going right into the cake. 1968 our wedding, with Carol’s entire family in town from Memphis plus other areas of the country and boy, were they party people. She came from a very traditional and orthodox environment but they sure knew how to have a good time. My side of the family eventually got into the swing of things. Our wedding is something both of us will remember especially when Carol said, it’s time to leave and I told her I was having too much fun to leave. There are so many more good times I could add to this article. Health has always been very important to me and there are reasons. When I was 26, my mother, Mary, of blessed memory, had breast cancer and 15 years later had another bout. She fought it, survived it and lived to be 84. She swore she would die of cancer. Instead she suffered a massive stroke and three months later passed away from pneumonia. My son Allen got hit in the back of the head with an axe as a child – no wonder. My son, Cory as an infant, – I won’t say who was holding him but they slipped down the step while carrying him, and he wound up breaking his leg. Freak accident. My daughter, Allison had continual problems throughout her childhood, suffering painful attacks and finally doctors discovered a cholodocal cyst in the middle of an x-ray. She never had an attack long enough to have it diagnosed. She had one surgery at Children’s Mercy and another at Mayo Clinic. Because of these aforementioned hospitals I am so thankful for the health of my children and for the health of many others who have had treatment there. Carol and I enjoy our trips to Vegas, the many cruises, and different parts of the country and world – so many fun times. Our travels taking us to out-of-town weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs or other celebrations – everything so positive. We should see, enjoy and never miss good times if our health allows it. Our congregation should see, enjoy and never miss good times if at all possible. Chairing Grand Givers two years in a row with Joan Rivers and Alan King was a job but a lot of fun. It changed the mindset of Grand Givers from a celebration to an event. Synagogue life: the births, birthdays, anniversaries, mitzvahs, parties and most importantly sharing time with some really young-at-heart congregants. Some of those old-timers are with us still and some not – of blessed memory. The granddaddy of all the great memories has to be the honor bestowed upon Carol and me by the synagogue this most recent Grand Givers evening – the Visionary Award. The evening was something to remember, the performance, Dudu Fisher, whom I’ve seen before - in person and on public TV, is definitely one-of-a-kind. Quite honestly the concert was more than I expected. When Dudu sang, “My Yiddishe Mama,” my mother’s favorite song, I became misty-eyed and that’s the truth. I also enjoyed the songs he sang from “Les Miserables” and “Papa” from “Fiddler on the Roof.” He was as incredible as I remember him. My hope is every congregant supported the 100 Year Anniversary by attending this concert. From the people who purchased a $52 ticket to those who gave $50,000 – you have the vision. It’s just as important to me to give your tzedakah for this concert with the idea of enjoying a tremendous performance at what ever level you gave. Was it visionary for a millionaire to get free tickets from the Heritage Center at the JCC? Is it visionary for the future of Judaism to rest in idle hands? Action is the key. I know what you’re thinking – there he goes again, talking about tzedakah. If Judaism - starting with Kehilath Israel, our community and our beloved Israel – is to flourish and perpetuate, we need cooperation. People asked me who was responsible for the tickets at the Heritage Center, Village Shalom and also to KU Hillel. This man doesn’t usually look for the accolades, but I asked his permission to publish - in our Focal Point his name. He is Herb Buchbinder, who has given so much to our Jewish community, especially the Jewish Community Center. He chaired Sports Night for years, raising millions. I consider him a deep friend and I know he loves white grapes, bananas and honey crisp apples. The community loves him as they should. On a congregational level, we need to change our mindset, change our way of thinking. You must understand K.I. isn’t the only synagogue having challenges. In the past month I have spoken with many individuals from other congregations – who have similar issues. Does this mean I’m wrong? Was Moses wrong when he became disenchanted with his people? I don’t believe in having a few donors giving large amounts of money. One of these days, these generous contributors are going to ask – why only me? Why not a group effort? My idea originally for the Founder’s Society was to ask many people for not so much money. What if more than the original eleven gave say nine to 20 more? Wouldn’t that be awesome? We need a ‘Blue Ribbon’ committee to think about K.I. after December 31, 2010. We need to form this committee as soon as possible so they can bring funding ideas to the president, officers and Board. It’s not only funding ideas, it could be cost-saving ideas or income-producing ideas. There’s the easy solution – cut, cut, cut only to see us regress. There have to be easy ways to balance our budget without losing the progress which has brought us so far. If you are critical and not putting your money where your mouth is--then you are part of the problem, not the solution. Think about it. How many past presidents have come out and told the real story? Arnold Caviar, President 7 8 www.kisyn.org December 2009/Kislev - Tevet 5770 Cantor Shron’s continued from page 2.... now listen to how these words are expressed from another perspective.” This is why the cantorial recitatives or vocal artistic interpretations of the prayers came into existence. The hazzan is using his skill and knowledge to give another interpretation to the words while the congregation is instructed to listen, to respond or to sing along at the appropriate times. This is also accomplished through the various congregational melodies that are sung. A tremendous misconception is that the Amidah is repeated by the hazzan on behalf of those who are unable to recite the prayers in Hebrew, and therefore, those who were able to daven in Hebrew think that they do not have to pay attention. Because of this misconception, many people use this time to talk with their friends. Not only is this wrong, but it also is very disturbing to one’s fellow congregant and the hazzan, and takes away from the dignity of the service. Wouldn’t it be an amazing experience if we would take the advice given in our Torah and sh’ma yisrael, don’t talk, just listen! Rabbi Jeffrey A. Shron, Hazzan GUARDIAN SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CAJE/Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City is, once again, pleased to offer financial assistance to those students participating in Jewish summer enrichment programs, particularly Jewish camps and Israel experiences. Many Jewish children in our community are able to attend a Jewish program only through the help of their congregations and CAJE/Jewish Federation. Although many apply, there are often not enough funds to provide every student with financial assistance. The Jewish Community Foundation provides additional funds for students needing financial assistance for Israel programs. Programs supported by The Rabbi Gershon Hadas Guardian Society include: Alexander Muss High School in Israel, BBYO, Camp Moshavah, Camp Ramah, Camp Sabra, Goldman Union Camp Institute, Herzl Camp, JCC Maccabi Games in Israel, Kutz Camp, NCSY, NFTY, Ramah Israel Program, Ranch Camp (JCC Denver), Round Lake, Tikvah Program, USY, Young Judea, and other approved camps and Israel experiences.
