Visit Alison at her exhibition in Venue 5. “I aim to make a connection with people through my work, to transport them to a place and a moment in time,” she says. “I am inspired by the detail in nature, the patterns, rhythms and textures. I want to create an emotional response in the viewer to the landscape that is important to me.” Each of Alison’s pieces is a combination of silk painting and stitch. The painting creates depth, perspective and richness to the work and combines “I aim to make a connection with people through my work, to transport them to a place and a moment in time.” effectively with stitch to give detail and texture. “I started to explore my love of the countryside, flowers and gardens through the medium of embroidery, finding it the perfect vehicle to express the colours, textures and shapes I find so In the Frost and Mist fascinating,” she said. “I try to combine in my compositions a sense of light and an interesting juxtaposition of colour, shape and texture. I aim to capture moments in time as an artist who has colour, line and texture to play with. “I consider myself a painter that uses threads, an artist that draws with a sewing machine.” Alison says she is inspired by the rich countryside and changing seasons around her home on Shropshire/Welsh border. “The Shropshire plain stretches for miles with its patchwork of Dancing in the Breeze fields, gentle rolling hills, a wealth of woodlands and the drama of mountains and waterfalls further into Wales,” she said. “Add into this mix of imagery the four seasons, with spring and summer flowers, autumn colours, winter snow and frost and the inspiration for me is endless.” Alison exhibits her embroideries in the UK at the Chelsea Flower Show and other venues. page 4 Rolling over the Rocks emerging artist Bill Flowers Bill Flowers Snake Book T he Emerging Artist for TCF2013 is Bill Flowers, better known as the “Snake Artist”. Having grown up around wildlife and art, “I went out and sketched snakes ‘faceto-face’ in their natural habitat, in the hope to portray some of the excitement and sense of danger into my art.” combining these two passions was a natural progression for Bill. “I can’t remember not being an artist, I’ve always drawn and painted,” he said. “I have some drawings of animals I did when I was six, so there has always been an interest.” Bill has worked with animals for most of his adult life, being a snake Bill’s philosophy of always drawing from real life has gotten him into handler, wildlife rescuer and zoo keeper at Devils @ Cradle and some sticky situations at times. In the isolation I had time to think about what I want to do in the next chapter of my life. I realised that my two best skills were snake handling and drawing. So I became the ‘Snake Artist’! “I went out and sketched snakes ‘face-to-face’ in their natural “But it is all part of life’s great adventure!” Bill will exhibit a range of his work at TCF2013, including his new series of hand-made artist books with a printed snake that folds out, featuring an image that is a screen-print, linocut, collagraph or etching. “I can’t wait to see people’s reaction to my artist books, paintings and prints,” he said. “This will be the biggest art event I’ve ever been a part of. TCF2013 St 2013 rch hu ne w so Tasmanian Craft Fair history With the spectacular backdrop of the Great Western Tiers etched into the skyline, and the aptly named Meander River wending its way through the landscape, the Meander Valley region has been home to farmers for generations. H erds of dairy cattle graze on the lush green grasses, poppies sway gently in the breezes that cross these plains, and the rich red-brown soils give life to large crops of vegetables and grains. In more recent years, producers of honey, salmon, specialty cheeses, truffles, hazelnuts and wasabi have found this fertile region a rich haven for their export businesses. But it was back in the 1970s that the area began to experience real diversity. Attracted by the secluded hamlets and villages, where you could live off the land and escape the everyday hustle and bustle, artists and craftspeople began to make their homes in the hills surrounding the picturesque township of Deloraine. These newcomers were a stark contrast to the traditional farming families of the area. They brought with them a different perspective on life, and yet had the same common goal – making a living using their own hands and their natural talents. It was this common goal that struck a chord with the Rotary Club of Deloraine, which is a very active member of the local community and its members are passionate about seeing their township thrive. Seeking a way to integrate these artisans into the traditional (and at times conservative) farming community, Rotary club member John Sullivan suggested a Craft Fair to not only unify the township, but also to develop an avenue for the artists to sell their products. John’s idea was enthusiastically taken up by the Rotarians, and he and then-club president Ian Huett travelled around the state to gather ideas. In 1981 the inaugural Tasmanian Cottage Industry Exhibition and Craft Fair was held, with 34 exhibitors page 12 and about 3000 visitors over two days. In the past 33 years the Fair has grown not just in size but in stature. In 1996 it was renamed the Tasmanian Craft Fair (although to locals it is still affectionately known as the “Deloraine Craft Fair”), and is now reputed to be the largest working Craft Fair in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, the Craft Fair hosts about 230 stallholders from all over Australia across 12 venues and in 2012 attracted about 22,000 people through the gates over four days. Not that Craft Fair is a very accurate description to reflect the event that is held today, with everything from high-end artistic works to small cottage crafts, large working displays, gourmet produce and entertainment and activities for families, this event is now a significant celebration of Tasmanian culture. It is a significant event for the local economy, with everyone from the butcher and baker to bus companies, schools and community groups being involved. The event takes about 1000 volunteers to run, with the local church groups, Lions and Apex clubs all working together to make the event a success. These groups have the opportunity to raise funds during the event, while a bulk of the funds raised (about $3 million in the past 33 years) have been used to benefit the local community. More than 12 major projects including aged care facilities and the Giant Steps school for autistic children have been assisted by these funds, in some cases by way of seed capital to commence a project, and in others 100 per cent funding. In addition, more than 200 smaller community projects have been funded through the Craft Fair. A growing concern in regional communities is the exodus of young people and young families from the area. The Rotary Club of Deloraine is determined to help combat this by clever initiatives such as the statewide Model United Nations Assembly, a Learn to Swim program and sponsoring children to attend programs in Tasmania and interstate designed to encourage high achievers and future leaders to realise their potential. All of these initiatives have been funded, at least in And the Rotary Club encourages the community to look more widely, with support for international Rotary projects such as Projects supported in the past year include: the eradication of polio instilling a sense of pride in the local Community: Construct a rail crossing to Deloraine swimming pool; $15,000 to Giant Steps (school for autistic children) for a new bus; assistance with the palliative care facility at Deloraine Hospital and the community garden at Kanangra Aged Care centre. Youth: Support for the Model United Nations Assembly, leadership programs, a tertiary scholarship, learnto-swim program and science forums. International: Support for an eye clinic in Nepal and Tarime Hospital in Tanzania; sponsorship of a teacher and two students at St Jude’s School, Tanzania; sponsorship for protection of two albino children in Africa. The Fair’s international reputation has grown through relationships with visiting artists and works from Japan, Hong Kong, China, New Zealand, France and, this year, the UK, and through residents for assisting underprivileged people world-wide. the support of local artists who have been involved in the event from the early years. Up-and-coming artists are rapidly discovering that the Craft Fair is an amazing launching pad for their businesses, not just to sell their products but also to meet influential artists who are only too willing to pass on their knowledge and help foster new talents. page 13 Where does the money go? part, by profits from the Tasmanian Craft Fair. WOAD staged a community knit-in in August to contribute to the creation of a knitted coat for the statue that represented “A white unicorn”. Another highlight will be a 5 metre x 4 metre tartan wall hanging that will be on display outside the Deloraine Town Café. WOAD 13 is hosted by Arts Deloraine, the local branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts, in partnership with the Tasmanian Craft Fair.
