K - O N L I N E . D E +++ Optimism ahead of K 2007 The international plastics and rubber industry is set to show off dynamism and innovative drive in Düsseldorf. More than 3,000 companies will be exhibiting in October. In the K year of 2007, the global plastics and rubber industry will be taking the spotlight against a positive economic backdrop. Machine builders, raw materials producers and processors have recorded strong business results and the outlook for the coming months is accordingly optimistic. Ulrich Reifenhäuser, Chairman of the K 2007 exhibitor council: “The initial results for 2007 are exceptionally promising! The economic upswing has penetrated all sectors of the industry without exception – from production/distribution through machine building and processing to recycling. Following an upbeat second half of 2006, the positive business trend is set to continue over the coming months, with growth reaching the same level as last year. All indicators confirm this prognosis – notably as the economy has now turned around and the clearing of the past two years’ investment backlog makes for full order books. A rise in the willingness to invest is unmistakable, with capital being directed chiefly into replacements and expansionary measures.” Full house In the light of these gratifying developments, the companies set to exhibit at the world’s premier trade fair for plastics and rubber are going full out to set up a compelling display of their innovations between 24 and 31 October 2007. More than 3,000 exhibitors will be presenting their latest developments targeting all fields of the industry at the leading event in Düsseldorf. Ranging from global giants to start-ups, these companies will offer an overview of the entire product palette covering standard raw materials to customised tools. In a word, all the building blocks needed for optimal production conditions – from feedstock through plant and machinery to complex solutions for various user industries – will be presented. K 2007 is fully booked. What’s more, the floor space occupied by the exhibitors will be roughly 8,000 square metres larger than at K 2004, totalling a net area of 169,000 square metres. The expansion is being made possible by the construction of a new hall in the north of the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Center which will be completed right on schedule in autumn 2007. The clear subdivision of K into the following sections will still be retained after the expansion: Machinery and equipment, Raw materials and auxiliaries, Semi-finished products, technical parts and reinforced plastics as well as Services Two thirds of the space for plant and machinery Suppliers of plant and equipment traditionally account for the largest exhibitor group at K. This year they will be spread across more than 116,000 square metres – roughly two thirds of the total exhibition space. Halls 1 to 4 and 9 to 17 will be their domain. Manufacturers of raw materials, semi-finished products and technical parts will set up shop in Halls 5 to 8b. In that area, the raw materials producers will claim 34,000 square metres of net exhibition space – a good fifth of the total floor space. A net area of 13,000 square metres has been reserved by processors. Fifty-seven percent of exhibitors from abroad The international profile and mix of exhibitors will ensure that the fair offers a complete panorama of the global market. Although rubber is the smaller segment compared to plastics, it is nevertheless of major importance to key user industries and a material of great innovative potential. C f As a result, the Rubberstreet has over the decades come to be synonymous with K and is highly valued by visitors. This section of the fair also provides the industry with a welcome presentation platform. This year, eleven exhibitors will take the spotlight at the roughly 450-square-metre showcase and provide an exposé on the full scope of the rubber industry’s cutting-edge expertise. “The focus of K overlaps perfectly with that of NRC – plastics and rubber are the markets on which we have successfully concentrated our activities for years now. The same goes for the relevant secondary industries. Plus, in our constant search for new products, K is the world’s best onestop shop. Not only is it the perfect place to track new developments and trends but also to meet customers as well as exchange news and views in a relaxed atmosphere.” Wolfgang Nagel Managing Director of Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH, Hamburg, Germany kil ma als the pe sm me fig at Twenty-six football fields or a net of 168,000 square metres – working on this kind of scale demands lots of logistical savvy. Savvy to ensure that exhibitors have the best opportunities for presentation, that they’re supplied with electricity, water and all other necessary facilities. Long before the trade fair opens it doors, preparations are in full swing. On the days when stand construction is underway, transporters with a 7.5-tonne payload each have to make a total of about 12,000 trips to the fairgrounds. At the same time, some 6,000 trucks each with a payload of 40 tonnes rumble through the gates. In order to keep things flowing smoothly, as many as 100 Messe Düsseldorf staff members may have to control the thoroughfare at times. And it’s also absolutely vital that the fair’s run is a first-class logistical act. Every day, about 200 tonnes of materials – generally, plastic granules – are delivered so that the exhibitors can demon- strate their machines’ functions. “That’s equivalent to about ten fully loaded trucks,” explains Werner Arnold who is in charge of traffic logistics. And let’s not forget that the same amount has to leave the fairgrounds – often as finished components. Only the best will do From the point of view of energy supply, a trade fair such as K also poses a tremendous challenge. Success depends above all on good organisation by the Messe Düsseldorf technical staff. As early as a year in advance, the space allocation process for K gets underway. This job not only involves taking into account exhibitors’ electrical, water and communications requirements but also integrating the variety of technical equipment used in different countries. In total about 6,000 electrical connections have to be installed in the halls – which translates into electrical consumption of about 6,800,000 XX On ing Thi jus ed de the pu an tra flo of on Tra he wh lig The of of ha en jus kmd0702_01091_GB.qxd 21.08.2007 14:48 Uhr Seite 6 +++ N e w a n d k n o ck o u t : We l c o m e to H a l l 8 b ! Construction will be completed just in time for K, adding an extra 8,000 net square metres to the exhibition space and providing a presentation platform for more than 300 companies. kilowatts per hour – to power the exhibitors’ machinery and electronic devices. And then there’s also the coffee machines and other facilities for the comfort and convenience of visitors and stand personnel. Twelve kilometres of pipes ensure the smooth supply and drainage of the 60,000 cubic metres of water required during the fair. These figures correspond roughly to the consumption of a town of 200,000 inhabitants. XXL exhibits One of the biggest exhibitors at K will be premiering a machine that alone weighs 200 tonnes. This calls for major league logistics, as it’s not just the size of the plant that has to be contended with but also its complex assembly that demands a professional touch. Six weeks before K, the components for this leviathan will be delivered, put together at a location outside the fairgrounds and then loaded onto a heavy goods vehicle for transportation and positioning on the exhibition floor when stand construction begins. The result of this lofty technical and logistical feat will be on display in Hall 15. Traffic on the fairgrounds is expected to be at its heaviest on the last day of stand construction when an estimated 5,000 cars and about 1,000 light trucks shuttle between the halls. The toughest day will probably be the second day of dismantling. With 700 trucks carrying 40 tonnes of payload and a further 600 transporters each hauling 7.5 tonnes of freight, it promises to be an endeavour unparalleled anywhere in the world – just like K itself! “Why K? Nowhere else can we as machine builders find a broader spectrum of interested experts attending. Often discussions at the fair with potential customers have led not only to sales opportunities but also new impetus for our company which we have subsequently translated into technical innovations. The idea of “Turning Vision into Business” originates in and is cultivated through contact with customers as well as their requirements and needs. And potential buyers get just as much out of the experience. There is virtually no other place where visitors can gather such comprehensive information and expert advice in such a short space of time. No local event, regardless of its calibre, can offer the same.” Dr. Klaus F. Erkes CEO Demag Plastics Group, Schwaig, Germany “K exhibition is the best and biggest window on the worldwide plastics market. It is unparalleled in tradition, location, number of exhibitors and visitors. That makes it a unique chance to showcase our innovative products!” Moreno Minghetti CEO Techne Technipack Engineering Italia S.p.A., Lazzaro di Savena, Italy “For Zeon, K holds a very special significance, and for this reason we have been a regular exhibitor for more than 20 years. Right from the start, K has brought us tremendous new business and new customers. For us, it is a great honour to be participating once again.” Hirofumi Imai Managing Director of Zeon Europe GmbH, Düsseldorf, Germany kmd0702_01091_GB.qxd 21.08.2007 14:48 Uhr Seite 1 K Newsletter September 2007 Page 5 +++ K 2007 +++ DÜSSELDORF, 24–31 OCTOBER 2007 +++ INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR +++ +++ +++ N O . 1 F O R P L A S T I C S A N D R U B B E R W O R L D W I D E + + + W W W. K - O N L I N E . D E +++ +++ “Quinn Plastics’ ethos is to think in terms of generations of people rather than the generation of business. However, we do more than listen – we also take note of what our customers say, and a major event like K 2007 touches the heart of this philosophy. From this, we increasingly find it is not just the product we offer that customers require, but also service and reliability. While we are proud of our record on both, we are also humble enough to say that we can still make improvements. Any company in the plastics industry looking to develop its vision and strategy will find K 2007 and its slogan “Turning Vision into Business” difficult to improve upon.” “At K we can showcase all of our ideas in the form of plant, machinery and equipment. At the same time, K also offers us an opportunity to acquaint visitors with our technical expertise. Here, the results of our ambitious innovation goals can be presented in a fitting setting. And last but not least, we take advantage of K to discuss further directions for development with our customers. This dialogue allows us to match our portfolio to the needs of the market.” Volker Kronseder Chairman of Krones AG, Neutraubling, Germany Tom Nulty General Manager of Quinn Plastics & Chemicals, Gortmullan, UK Eight times around the globe: Worldwide promotions for K No place is too far for the members of the exhibitor council and Messe Düsseldorf to travel so that they can introduce K to journalists and other influentials. Altogether they have clocked up 206,940 miles, or 333,038 kilometres. Flanking this campaign are myriad printed advertising materials, including brochures in ten languages – German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. The total print run came to 700,000. As many as 420,000 copies of three newsletters in German and English were distributed around the planet. Deliveries were made to some 155,000 individual postal and e-mail addresses. And all the important facts and figures from the global plastics and rubber market can be accessed in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch on the K Internet portal. This comprehensive service site also offers users a wealth of links to exhibitors and cooperation partners as well as lots of other interesting insights. What’s more, K’s presence in the media is not to be sniffed at – some 210 advertisements ran in 194 publications in 37 countries. “K is the most important fair for plastics machinery builders as well as manufacturers and processors of plastics. It’s the only fair in this industry that is truly global in character. Business partners and customers from far-flung markets such as Australia, Chile and China all meet here. Innovations are timed to coincide with the staging cycle of K – everyone wants to premiere their latest developments and solutions to problems for their target groups in Düsseldorf.” Wolfgang Studener Managing Director of Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik GmbH, Bad Oeynhausen, Germany “Repsol YPF has benefited over the course of many years from presenting our extensive portfolio of plastics and rubber at K.
