“My paintings and drawings are created from observation, memory,
and imagination. I use the everyday
experiences in my own life as the
conceptural impetus for my work. I
seek to record the transient experience of light, fleeting in our experience yet permanently stamped in
our memory. These moments have
a deeper storage over time in our
own subconcious and the memories that are made end up defining
our future habits and ways of being.
Selected events, images, and feelings
make their way into our dreams
and can become a catalyst for another transitory experience that is
far more bizarre. My work aims to
capture these moments representationally, while other works offer a
narrative to express how memory
and dreams recycle our everyday
experiences into an altered tableau.”
The ArtsCenter receives financial
support from The North Carolina Arts
Council and the Orange County Arts
Commission.

1019. CHILDREN’S BOOK
ILLUSTRATION PART II
A picture book or graphic novel is a collaboration between author & artist. Each relies on the other to help tell the
story. So, the focus of this class is on learning effective visual communication through
sequential illustration. While drawing and
coloring skills come in very handy for
this, they are not the main focus! What
becomes important is content, character
development, continuity, sequence, pacing
& rhythm, and – the most fun part: imagination! Nothing inspires a child more! In
class, we’ll have demos, work sessions with
individual guidance, & critiques. This being
Part Two of the class begun in summer,
students will transform their storyboards
into “dummies”, which can be sent off to
publishers when finished.

1020. FIND YOUR ARTISTIC
VOICE (DRAWING AND
PAINTING)
This on-going class will challenge and guide
you in finding & developing your own authentic artistic voice, in whatever genre
you choose. Experiment with different
content, media, and techniques, or develop
what you already know, in an encouraging,
supportive environment. [Work on one
or two big projects over the course of
the class, or several smaller ones.] Oneon-one coaching sessions may result in a
change of your trajectory during class, so
come with an open mind! The primary focus is on self-expression and artistic communication, but instruction in composition,
drawing skill, color-mixing, & other media
techniques will be offered, as needed. A
sprinkling of art theory & art history will
be thrown in, where relevant. I will challenge you to create work that furthers
your own personal and artistic growth &
development. Warm up exercises, demos,
and discussions will punctuate an otherwise inner-focused workspace. Periodic
individual guidance will also be offered. If
you are at the beginning of your art-making journey, or have come to a roadblock
and need guidance in moving forward with
your artistic objectives, this class is for
you.
vBring your own materials; I’ll bring my
bag of tricks.

cert. course
There’s both
a science & art to color-mixing. The first
3 classes will cover the science (technical)
part: mixing the colors. Students will make
color wheels & charts with the media of
their choice so they can use them for reference at home. The next 3 classes will
begin to explore the big challenges (the
artistic part): how & where to use the colors once you’ve mixed them. It will include
the affects of lighting on color, transparent vs. opaque colors, color relativity &
placement, and perhaps more. There will
be demos for each lesson, using a variety
of media, (ex: acrylics, oil pastel, watercolor) including whatever the students bring
in. Practice exercises will be offered for
students who finish the lesson work early.
By the end of the course, students who
complete the work will be able to mix any
color they desire. The study and use of
color could take years to master!

Students will express their creativity while
learning fundamental acting skills.This class
is designed to focus on two specific areas
of acting technique: Instinct and Preparation. Class will begin with exercises and
improvisations to deepen the actor’s sense
of open honest listening and responding.
This moment-to-moment reality will be
explored within the framework of behaving
truthfully under imaginary circumstances.
The actor will explore character creation,
needs, obstacles, and being in the moment.
Exercises are used to help actors dive into
a character’s physical and emotional life,
increase relaxation and concentration, and
open up the actor’s instrument and imagination. Next, scenes are carefully chosen
that both suit and challenge the actor. A
step-by-step approach to scene work follows from analyzing text and making effective choices, to developing a character and
creating the role. This class is for the beginner AND advanced student. However,
careful consideration will be given to the
scripts chosen. Students will have the opportunity to perform their final scenes in

form of partnered swing dancing that began in Harlem in the late 1920’s and continues to thrive today. Lindy works well

Rebecca (Becky) Clewell is first and
foremost a scientist, with a sense of curiosity that extends well past her day job.
As a potter, she’s amazed (still) that it is
possible to take a handful of clay and create a beautiful, useful and enduring piece of
art. During her time at UNC, Becky found
working with clay to be a much needed
departure from the routine of graduate
school. Yet, over time, it became clear to
her that science and art are not quite as
different as they may seem—the process
of creating is in itself an experiment. Becky
has had the pleasure of working at The
ArtsCenter for several years and learning
under the instruction of very talented potters, and she welcomes the opportunity to
share what she’s learned with others who
want to experiment with their own artistic tendencies.
Richard Cloudt studied philosophy at
Davidson College. He has worked as an
editorial and comic strip cartoonist and

theme park in Charlotte, he has drawn live
at countless venues and events all over the
state and caricatured over 20,000 live subjects. In 1992, he began teaching cartooning at Sertoma Arts Center in Raleigh and
in 1999 at The ArtsCenter. In the fall of
2002, he was selected to serve as Artist in
Residence at Guy B. Phillips Middle School
for a special project arranged by the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission. In 2009,
he was selected by the Carrboro Mer-

Molly Cronenwett is an artist, photographer, teacher and mother who lives in
Hillsborough. After growing up in Michigan and New Hampshire, she moved to
NC in 1997 to earn an MA in Art History
from UNC-Chapel Hill and a second BA
in Art Education from NCCU. Since migrating south, Molly has taught art and art
history to all ages—from preschoolers to
adults—at a charter school, at her own
community art school in Hillsborough,
and through private lessons and camps
at her home. She specializes in ceramics,
drawing, and painting. As a studio teacher,
Molly believes a focus on art history offers
students a deeper understanding of art, as
well as a catalog of successful imagery and
ideas. She wants her students to realize
that they are part of an enormous global
community of artists—past and present—
from whom they can gain inspiration.
Adam Dodds is a local photographer
who hails from northern Mississippi. He
studied at Memphis College of Art and
has been producing work both personal
and commercial for the better part of a
decade. His photographs have been exhibited locally and featured in several publications statewide, and beyond. Film is central
to his aesthetic, so he wishes to preserve
the principles of the medium yet instill the
notion that photography is as much about
spontaneity and imagination as it is knowing what you are doing. This carries over
into the darkroom where creativity is only
just beginning.

photographer,Katie has developed a keen
eye for color, minimalist composition, and
the vernacular aesthetic that she translates into various mediums, particularly
mixed media collage and drawing. Katie
values the importance of art exposure
at a young age as a way to open a child’s
mind to alternative forms of thought and
expression that can lead to a more acute,
sensitive, and dynamic vision of the world
as an adult.

it was the vibrant energy of Latin social
dance that led to her specialization in salsa,
cha cha, and bachata. Extensive travel and
training in Latin America has allowed Aubrey to learn these disciplines from their
sources and then integrate her diverse
dance education into a unique, innovative
style. This style emphasizes isolations, fluidity of the body, mind-body connection,
cultural expression, personal empowerment, and meaningful connections with the
floor, self, partner, and core. She has been
dancing and inspiring creative movement

some of the most talented jewelers in
the area and nationally known jewelers
