Photo by Stu Clampitt There were no injuries in a Monday morning accident at the CVS at 713 S. Washington St. Todd Huckstep of the Crawfordsville Police Department told The Paper that an elderly woman drove a silver 2007 Pontiac through the entrance to CVS at 9:07 a.m. “We have no reason to belief it was anything other than driver error,” Huckstep said. CVS was open at the time of the accident. Rocky start heading to smooth finish He was a senior from Wabash with long hair and a longer attitude sitting in front of the football-coachturned-mayor. It was a job interview that might’ve resembled the maiden voyage of the Titanic. “I remember walking into his office – he looked at me and said, ‘do you think you can do this job?’ I said ‘you called me.’ ” The view from the other side of the desk? “It was back in the old coaching days. You had a requirement for your players. I asked him if he was going to cut his hair and beard. He said no.” Man the lifeboats? “I wasn’t that serious about it. After discussion from the Crawfordsville Common Council and Bud Arnold from the Golf Course Authority, the ordinance transferring control passed unanimously. Councilman Mike Reidy served as chairman of the Ordinances and Petitions Committee in Dan Guard’s absence. During the second reading of the ordinance, Councilman Scott Molin asked what discussions had taken place between golf course members and the park board or the mayor’s office. Concern for the views of local golfers was a theme throughout the meeting. “I feel like we have listened to every side of this issue and we are trying to find some balance that preserves the golf course and moves it forward but is fiscally responsible as well. We currently sit at a deficit and we just cannot continue on that path,” Mayor Barton said. Barton said this transfer calls See GOLF Page A2 THE MONTGOMERY MINUTE Thanks to Zerelda Wallace for all you did Next Monday the Indiana General Assembly will offer a concurrent resolution honoring three historic Hoosier leaders instrumental in gaining women the right to vote: Helen Gougar, May Wright Sewell, and Zerelda Wallace. Þ GOLF From Page A1 for a complete separation of the finances and transparency. Director of Parks and Recreation Fawn Johnson pointed out that the administration would be done by golf course employees, separate from the Parks Department. During the audience discussion, Arnold talked about the golf course history and finances up to this point. “There needs to be a link between the player and the city,” Arnold said. “I think that’s important. However you staff (the golf course) you need to remember that the customer is the boss. Your boss is the taxpayer.” Arnold went on to stress his belief that the golf course is important to the community. Before the transfer was passed, Molin suggested golfers speak to council members to give feedback and let them know what they think. In other action Both Andy Biddle and Mike Reidy took a few moments to speak about the lockdown incident at Wabash College last week. Both expressed pride and gratitude to local law enforcement in their handling of the situation. “I never knew it could be so simple. I walked in, and in no time, I walked out with great hearing!” The Paper of Montgomery County Þ SMOOTH From Page A1 to get a haircut for that. I told him the worst he could do is fire me.” Iceberg dead ahead. “I said, OK,” the football-coach-turned-mayor said. “We brought him in and he did a hell of a job.” Iceberg avoided. And that’s how former Crawfordsville Mayor Glenn Knecht and former City Planner Tim Gagen got started back in 1976 . . . 40 years ago and both men still smile about it. “He was a go-getter,” the now-82-year-old Knecht said. “He was consistent, which helped him. In that type of job if there’s a chink in your armor they’ll tear you apart. He was consistent.” Gagen was indeed. He spent eight years with Knecht and a group both called “a great team.” “There was Tim and Fred Davis, Carlos Goode, Jim Harper, Rita Hamm . . . “ Knecht said. “I had a good group. We were young but the city of Crawfordsville needed a change.” After eight years on the team Gagen was ready for a change. He moved north to Lowell and took over as the town manager. That began a series of career moves that eventually landed him in Breckenridge, Colo. as town manager. That was 16 years ago and now he’s ready for at least one more change. In May, the 62-year-old will retire. “It’s time,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.” Gagen and the former Ann Schneider (they got married when they lived in Crawfordsville) are keeping their eyes on the future instead of the past. “Ann and I are looking at an RV,” Gagen said. “There are lots of places we haven’t been to yet.” They’ll still come back to Crawfordsville from time to time, both for Ann’s family and Wabash visits. “Ann’s had a couple of bouts with cancer,” Gagen said. “She’s OK now but we decided the time was right.” When not traveling, they plan on staying in Breckenridge. Gagen, who spent his youth in New Jersey before moving to South Bend (his dad worked for United Way), says the western lifestyle suits him. “I do a lot of skiing and biking,” he said. “We’ve taken lots of ski trips; Canada, the U.S., Europe.” He was active back in the day in Crawfordsville as well – especially in softball. That’s how attorney Dan Taylor got to know him. “He came by the (Beta Theta Pi) house and was looking for some guys to play,” Taylor remembered. “His team was really diverse. He looked at everybody on their own merits. That’s really valuable. He was just a good leader.” Gagen will be back in Crawfordsville shortly after he retires. He said the memories from here are good ones. “I’m very thankful of my time (there). “Lots of good people. I was able to get a great background for what I ended up doing. I want to thank Glenn Knecht for hiring a shaggy-haired bearded kid from Wabash.” It sounds like a move no one regretted. More than 60 people came to discuss what they wanted the park to look like and what amenities they thought it should provide. Among the most desired amenities were permanent restrooms, a performance stage for events, appropriate seating and professionally-designed green spaces. The overall goal of the park would be to create an aesthetic that serves to beautify the city and further revitalize the downtown as part of the Stellar project, as well as fostering a more open, can president." In fact, the quote should have read, "If we unite around these beliefs in November, we will have a Republican Senator, Republican pres- connected, active community. Dr. Sara Drury, director of WDPD, commented on the initiative's role in playing host to the pocket park meeting when she said, “It was clear the Mayor's office wanted to hear from the community about what they wanted, and so we started working with them on designing a process that would allow for maximum participation from the community." Drury said the purpose of WDPD is to be a, “resource for community organizations and for different aspects of government that want to hold a more participatory decision-making process." For inquiries on collaboration with WDPD, contact Dr. Drury at (765) 361-6393 or email drurys@wabash.edu. ident, Republican governor, Republican Attorney General, and a Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction." What is an actuary? An actuary is an analyst who determines the likelihood of risks. These individuals are crucial to the insurance field, as they evaluate the risks associated with your home, car and life and use those findings to determine the cost of your premiums. For example, an actuary would determine the risk of insuring your home by taking into account your home’s location, its characteristics and your insurance history. Do you live in an area prone to breakins? Do you own an older home? Have you filed several claims in the last few years? These questions—along with many others—allow actuaries to accurately determine a reasonable premium for you by using statistics to calculate how risky it is to insure your property. The school prides itself on changing the lives of its students and was featured in Loren Pope’s 1996 book “Colleges That Change Lives.” Homeinsurance.com compiled its top 15 list by comparing the 24-year median pay for high school graduates against the 20-year median pay for college graduates with a bachelor’s degree, minus college costs, for U.S. colleges with actuarial programs. I am expecting great things from her in the next couple of years, looking into Sectionals and beyond.” Charger Camilla Clark came in a close second for three of the four events on her way to a second place in allaround at 32. South’s Hailey France came in third all-around (30) with two third places, a fourth place and an eighth The Sagamore Athletic All-Conference awards have been announced and Crawfordsville’s Paige Schueren is the only Montgomery County girl to be named to the 1st team All-Conference. Schueren polished off her senior season with 252 points (12 ppg). She made 38 3-pointers in the season to put her at 98 total and place fourth in Crawfordsville’s career Girls’ Basketball SAC Awards 1st Team All-Conference Name Paige Schueren Maleha Motter Hannah Newby Kristen Spolyar Brooke Montgomery Maggie Cora Rachel Ramey Madison Jones School Crawfordsville Danville Danville Lebanon Lebanon Tri-West Western Boone Western Boone Grade 12 12 12 12 11 9 12 9 2nd Team All-Conference Name Jazmine Hall Tania Olivas Peyton Terrill Cheyenne Warren Kasey Burton Reagan Case Carli Wilson Taylor Vanderpool place. Southmont placed second as a team with a 79.95. “The whole team has really ended on a high note with some high scores and our highest floor scores for everybody,” Mountie coach Aimee Zachary said. The France sisters greatly contributed to the team score with their vault and floor routines. Courtney France placed second in floor with an 8.9, just under Harpel’s first place and tied for third in vault with an 8.4. Hailey France placed third in floor and tied with Courtney in vault. “They were a lot cleaner,” Zachary said of the France sisters. “They both stuck landings on the vault so I think that showed in the score.” Crawfordsville rounded out the County schools with a third place at 75.8. Athenian Emily West had the highest placement with a fourth in beam. “Emily had a no fall beam routine tonight and I couldn’t be happier for her because she has been working so hard on that,” Athenian coach See STICK Page A6 Grade 10 12 12 12 11 11 9 12 Honorable mention The Paper photos by Lori Poteet (Left) Rhiannon Harpel swept all four events at the County meet, helping her team to a new school team record. Junior Sam Conkright contributed two 6ths, a 7th and a 10th place to the team score which was above the team’s goal for the day. The three teams head to Sectionals Saturday at Lafayette Jefferson at 11 a.m. against 11 other Indiana teams. McKeown said their goal is over 80 for the team score. “It would be tough but it would be awesome if we could come out of there with an 80,” she said. “Aim high and let’s go out with a bang.” Myers said their County win will help propel them to Sectionals. “It contributes to the energy getting prepared for Sectional and we will continue to work on cleaning up our routines and bringing our best gymnastics on Saturday,” she said. The Mounties had their highest team score of the year Monday. “Hopefully we can have good practices this week and end the season at Sectionals on a good note,” Zachary concluded. Charger Kennedy Welliever was the sole senior at the County meet and has lettered three times for North.
