March 26, 2005: Immigration Forum
One of our members, Ms. Kripa Upadhyay, and attorney Mr. Chris Jarvis provided an "Immigration Forum" on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at
The Everest Kitchen (formerly New Delhi Restaurant) Lake City Way
from 2:30pm to 6pm. The Forum was organized in collaboration with
Seattle University School of Law, Access to Justice Institute (AtJI), a
program within the law school that works with low income members of
various communities providing help and services for a variety of issues
including immigration help for battered women, landlord-tenant issues,
Will/Estate planning and small business concerns.
Chris Jarvis is an attorney in private practice. He has a Bachelor's degree from Stanford University and a law degree from Yale University
School of Law. He is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers
Association (AILA). Chris traveled to Nepal in 1990 shortly before moving to Seattle.
The following issues were discussed in the Immigration Forum:
* Sponsorship Process.
* Affidavit of Support - What it means and what are the consequences of filing an affidavit of support for another person.
* Special visa's for survivors of violence.
* "Public Charge" -What it means and how it can potentially impact your application for Citizenship.
* Naturalization (Citizenship) Application - How to Apply for Citizenship, Citizenship Exam and Waiting Time.
At the end of the forum, there was a question/answer session related to the above issues. The Forum was very informative, educative and helpful to our members and friends. We thank attorney Mr. Chris and Ms. Kripa for giving their valuable time to NSS and its members. We hope they will provide this kind of program again in the future. Also, thanks to all
of our members and friends who attended the Forum.
March 13, 2005: Great Show of Unity Fundraiser
Nepal Seattle Society(NSS) participated in the "Great
Show of Unity Fundraiser Dinner" hosted by PlanetGuru Foundation for South Asian Community
(PFSAC) on Sunday March 13, 2005 at the Double
Tree Hotel in Bellevue in aid of the Tsunami Victims in
South Asia. Not only did we have an opportunity to
donate for humanitarian reasons, we also were able to
showcase NSS and its activities.
NSS thanks Mr. Debadutta Dash and the team members of PlanetGuru Foundation for South Asian Community (PFSAC) for organizing this great event and
giving us an opportunity to participate.
We thank our talented cultural team members: Sita
Gurung, Sunil Joshi, Atul Regmi, Krishna Gurung,
Shanti Thapa, Sarah Brown, Parvati Brown, Kiran
Shrestha and Tak B. Gurung who performed fantastic
dances and songs at this great event of the South
Asian Community. Also, thanks to our members and
friends who attended and supported this event to represent Nepal Seattle Society.

NE, Seattle to
help/support Tsunami
Victims in South East
Asia. Please accept
our heartfelt appreciation for your kind contribution in support of the "Fundraiser
Dinner for Tsunami Victims". We believe that our society
depends on our members/friends like you to be able to provide support to those in need and make a true difference.
Although the money raised is just a small amount, it is
more important that we a tiny organization come together
and take part in a large humanitarian act that the whole
world is involved in.
A huge thank you to all members, friends, volunteers and
guests for your kindness and generosity. Many special
thanks to our talented singers Mr. Sunil Joshi and Mr. Atul
Regmi for their wonderful performance. Also, thanks to the
world famous Mr. Lakpa Rita Sherpa for sharing his time
with us at this event. And, our special thanks to Mr. Mani
Chhetri of Himalayan Sherpa Restaurant for his great contribution and to the friendly staff of the restaurant.
We raised a total of $916.00 and assure you all that the
funds raised will be given to an appropriate organization
directly working to the needs of the Tsunami Victims.
February 12, 2005: LOSAR Celebration
The Cultural team of Nepal Seattle Society participated in
the LOSAR celebration organized by Northwest Sherpa
Association (NWSA)
on February 12, 2005
at the Highlands Center in Bellevue. We
thank the NWSA
members for giving us
an opportunity to our
cultural team to perform. This celebration
has proven that
"SERVING OUR
COMMUNITY - HELPING EACH OTHER" is
true. NSS thanks all of our cultural team and all members
who participated in this LOSAR celebration.
January 19, 2005: Nepal Event
North Seattle Community College (NSCC) hosted a “Nepal
Event” on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 where Mr. Chan
Pongkhamsing Regional Recruiter for Peace Corps talked
about his experiences as a Peace Corp volunteer in Nepal
and presented a slide show of Nepal. Nepal Seattle Society was requested to put on a cultural show at this event
hence the NSS cultural team put together two dances and
two songs. We must thank Ms. Sita Gurung, Ms. Parvati
Tamang, Ms. Sarah Tamang, Ms. Mingma Sherpa, Ms.
Shanti Thapa and Mr. Kiran Shrestha for their outstanding
dance performances and to Mr. Sunil Joshi for the wonderful Nepali and Newari songs. Congratulations to all the participants on a job well done! This is a great example of how
we can promote our culture outside NSS. We also thank
our members and friends who attended the event to show
their support- together we can always make a difference in
our society.
We would like to thank Ms. Kava Vale (Program Assistant)
at North Seattle Community College for giving us the opportunity to participate at this event. We hope to continually
promote our culture in the future by participating in events
like this. NSS thanks Ms. Chalice Bailey and Mr. Tim for
publishing news of Nepal Seattle Society in NSCC newspaper "The Polaris."
Our special thanks goes to Mr. Debadutta Dash (Media &
Public Relations Manager) from PlanetGuru for covering
Nepal Seattle Society in the paper and for his commitment
to help/support NSS in the future as well. Thanks also to
Annapurna Cafe for providing Nepali food for the event.
NSS requests the support and cooperation of our dear
members and friends on occasions such as this one. Your
presence - time permitting, will always be appreciated by
our artists who are always willing to work hard to represent
Nepal and its rich culture through their performances.

December 31, 2004: New Year Eve Party
To bid adieu to the eventful year 2004 and to welcome the New Year 2005, Himalayan Sherpa Restaurant organized a New Year's Eve party on December 31,
2004. We spent the night eating delicious food prepared by Himalayan Sherpa
Restaurant. The atmosphere was lively with non-stop music. For the first time we
played BINGO together and all had a wonderful time. We collected a total of $93
for NSS Fund. Mr. Anup was our big winner of the night and Ms. Sarita Lohani
came in second place. We thank every one who came out and shared this happy
time together. Thanks to Mr. Mani Chhetri and all the staff of Himalayan Sherpa
Restaurant for organizing this event.
November 14, 2004: Tihar (Deusi/Bhailo) Celebration
Tihar is the second biggest and widely celebrated festival of Nepal. Traditionally, during this festival, sisters give tika and blessings to their brothers while brothers give sisters valuable gifts/cash as a token of their love
and appreciation towards their sisters. Another highlight of Tihar is the
Deusi/Bhailo which involves going from house to house singing, dancing
and collecting donations called Daan/Dakshina which people use for different purposes. This year, we did not go house to house but we did
gather at The Everest Kitchen on November 14, 2004 and sang
Deusi/Bhailo. We collected $316.25 which went to the NSS Fund. We
thank you all for your valuable support to NSS. Our special thanks to Mr.
Mohan Gurung and his family who organized this celebration.
November 7, 2004: Fundraiser for Mr. Ram B. Malla
The Board of Directors, Executive Committee Members, General Members
and friends of Nepal Seattle Society were all concerned and saddened to
hear that one of our members, Mr. Ram Bahadur Malla, was hospitalized in
serious condition. He is suffering from a liver disease. He needed some
funds to cover his hospital bills and medical care so most of our members
and friends were generous to help him and his family in his time of need.
NSS also organized a fundraiser for him and collected $1455. NSS added
$500 totaling the amount to $1955. We handed over the amount of $1955 to
Mr. Ram Bahadur Malla at The Everest Kitchen on November 7, 2004 in the
presence of NSS President, Members and Mrs. Shobha Malla, wife of Mr.
Ram Malla. We would like to thank all of our members and friends for their
generous contribution. This is an excellent example of "SERVING OUR
COMMUNITY BY HELPING EACH OTHER".

October 23, 2004: Dashain 2061 Celebration
Bada Dashain is the biggest and most widely celebrated
festival of Nepal which is celebrated for 10 consecutive
days with various rituals. Every year, the Nepalese people
in Seattle along with friends of Nepal get together to celebrate this great festival. This year, we celebrated Bada
Dashain on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the Greenwood
Senior Activity Center in Seattle, Washington which was
attended by approximately 130 members and friends.
The celebration started with a welcome speech by the NSS
President, Mr. Ravi Rana which was followed by a Dasain
Dhoon “Malashree” by Mr. Brient Bianchy on Esraj.
Malashree is a welcoming festive tune, which filled our
hearts and minds with the spirit of Dasain festival. Mr. Brient lived in Nepal for one year and learned various Nepali
music. Along with Mr. Brient, NSS Executive member Mr.
Sampurna Prajapati played the Madal (Nepali Drum). Mr.
Brient and Sampurna played many different kinds of
drums, i.e., Madal, Jor Damaru, Dhapa/Lala Khin, and Dhimay Baja, all of which have different sounds and are
played in different genres of Nepali music.
Mrs. Jyotsana Rana recited a heart touching Nepali poem
“Kathaibari” composed by herself in memory of the 12 Nepalese people who were killed in Iraq by the Iraqi rebels 2
months ago. Mr. Bom Singh Ranabhat sang a song “Joon
Phula Maile Rojeko Thiye…” This was his second performance in NSS cultural show. Mrs. Shobha Rana performed a
wonderful modern solo dance on a famous Nepali movie
song called “Gairi Khetko Sirai Hanyoooo…” This was Mrs.
Rana’s first performance on the NSS stage.

We then honored the following individuals who became Life
members of Nepal Seattle Society: Mr. Bijit Giri, Mr. Tashi
Sherpa, Mr. Chhong Karma Sherpa, Mr. Arthur Hrin, Ms.
Evangeline Erskine, Ms. Lalu Chhetri and Mr. Tirtha Khanal. Mr. Craig Seasholes took NSS Life Membership during
the celebration and we were happy to be able to honor him

We all know that Ms. Richa Bajimaya has a serious health condition. She is under medical
treatment for bone cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma, at the Children's Hospital in Sand Point, Seattle. Her mother Yasho Bajimaya came from Nepal to take care of her. They need our

Northwest Yoga & Meditation Festival
April 28-May 1, 2005, Seattle Center, Seattle WA
Himalayan Art & Film Festival
Benefit and Auction for Tibet House U.S. Featuring Dr. Robert Thurman
This year’s Northwest Yoga & Meditation Festival has expanded to include a Himalayan Art & Film Festival plus
classes on meditation and ayurvedic workshops. The third
annual festival will take place at Seattle Center, April 28May 1, 2005, and will also include yoga classes and workshops for students and teachers of all levels.
Six award-winning films of the Himalayas will be shown
over the weekend in the Northwest Rooms at Seattle Center. Films are Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion (Thurs 4pm, Sat
7:30pm, Sun 6:30pm), The Yogis of Tibet (Thurs 7pm, Sat
6pm), Bhutan: The Last Shangri La (Fri 7pm, Sun 4pm),
Into Thunder Dragon (Sun 5:15p), Nima Temba Sherpa
(Sat 5pm), and Farther than the Eye Can See (Fri 4pm &
8:30pm). A one-day pass for exhibits, films, panels, and
demos is $15.
Art Perry, author of the award-winning book, The Tibetans,
will show his photographs from five years of travel through
Tibet. His photos convey the mystery, magic, wisdom, and
compassion for which this Buddhist culture is fabled. Perry
will also give daily lectures on topics such as photography
in third world countries, sacred photography, threatened
cultures and more.
Over the course of the weekend, visiting Tibetan Buddhist
monks will create an intricate sand mandala that includes
geometric shapes and ancient spiritual symbols, and brings
blessings to all.
On Saturday evening, April 30th, at Seattle Center’s Exhibition Hall, the Northwest Yoga & Meditation Festival will present a special evening with beloved author and teacher,
Dr. Robert Thurman. A close friend of the Dalai Lama for
more than 40 years, Dr. Thurman will speak on yoga, Buddhism, and world peace. Thurman’s humor and wisdom will
leave each participant with an awareness of their own inner
joy and deepest purpose as well as an understanding of
the role of Buddhist philosophy in everyday life. In 1997,
Time magazine chose Professor Thurman as one of its
most influential Americans, and the New York Times recently called him “the leading American expert on Tibetan
Buddhism.”
The goal of Saturday evening’s benefit is to raise $10,000
for the educational and conservation programs of Tibet
House, a museum, shrine, library, cultural and teaching
center in New York City . It is dedicated to preserving the
sacred texts, art, and spirit of the Tibetan culture. Tibet
House U.S. is a non-profit organization founded in 1987 by
Dr. Thurman and Richard Gere at the request of and with
the guidance of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The evening will include a keynote with Dr. Thurman, a reception
hosted by The Essential Baking Company, and silent and
live auctions. The cost for the evening is $30 and up.
“On behalf of the Tibetan people and the staff and members of Tibet House U.S., I am very grateful for the special
benefit in Seattle for Tibet House and its work of helping
the Tibetan refugee community preserve its culture. If you
