Hopefully, next year will be somewhat less dramatic than 2008. Michael Ruszczynski, Publisher Even with all the global turmult, Chapman Woods continues to be a pocket of relative calm. We have avoided any major issues and have continued to prosper as a community and a neighborhood: advertising@chapmanwoods.net............................................................................... 395-9901 • The Post Patrol continues to be a visible presence in our neighborhood. While crime does occur periodically, it appears to be at a lower rate than many of our neighboring communities. • The Kohl’s Fund Project is still progressing, albeit slowly. Our Kohl’s Committee (Gabi Sachs, Dennis Lee and Manny Grace) are continuing to work cooperatively with LA County to allocate the funds for some Chapman Woods beautification projects and we hope to be able to report on specific ideas and funding shortly. • You may have noticed an increase in filming in the neighborhood this year. While it requires patience and flexibility on the part of all residents concerned, it has continued to be our primary source of funds for our Association and neighborhood. Our filming income currently is over $26,000 this year, bringing our total assets to above $55,000! • Ucoming events for Chapman Woods include the Annual Holiday Party, being held on Sunday, December 7th at the Clougherty’s home, and our Annual Meeting at the San Gabriel Country Club on Thursday, February 19th. Details can be found in this issue of The Call, and you will also be receiving (or perhaps already have) information via email and postal invitations. I hope you all can attend these events—it’s a great way to get to know, or re-acquaint with, your neighbors! I recently went back and refreshed myself on our Association’s Mission Statement, and I think it’s worthwhile to share it again with everyone: “Our mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the unique character of this residential area, further the neighborly cooperation among its residents, motivate the residents to take pride in their homes, and foster a social atmosphere for the residents of this community of Los Angeles County known as Chapman Woods.” With that in mind, and given our recent filming income, we hope to be able to expand our funding of some of our future events. Our recent Martini Party was an example, with the food and drinks being supplied by the Association. There will be no charge to the attendees of our Holiday Party! Hopefully this will induce even more residents to join us at our gatherings! I and the members of the Chapman Woods Board all wish you a terrific Holiday Season and best wishes for the New Year! publisher@chapmanwoods.net................................................................................... 449-0989 Loretta Hoffman, Advertising Chapman Woods Association Board of Directors Harry Greenwood, President president@chapmanwoods.net.................................................................................. 796-3488 Armida Baylon-Stelzer, Social Co-Chair social@chapmanwoods.net......................................................................................... 390-3751 Monica Lee Copeland, Social Co-Chair social@chapmanwoods.net......................................................................................... 744-5093 Maria Finnegan, Secretary secretary@chapmanwoods.net.................................................................................. 796-1235 Carter Freeman, Treasurer treasurer@chapmanwoods.net................................................................................... 796-5240 Josie Beringer, Membership Chair membership@chapmanwoods.net.............................................................................. 744-0229 Diane Williams, Neighborhood Watch neighborwatch@chapmanwoods.net......................................................................... 449-6793 Gerie O’Connor, Block Representative blockrep@chapmanwoods.net................................................................................... 796-7494 Tom Rike, Filming filming@chapmanwoods.net....................................................................................... 405-8969 Brian Reid, Zoning zoning@chapmanwoods.net....................................................................................... 793-7992 Dennis Lee, County Liaison county@chapmanwoods.net........................................................................................ 229-9951 Karlene Morris, WOW Representative wow@chapmanwoods.net........................................................................................... 796-3214 Rob Curtiss, At-Large Member director@chapmanwoods.net..................................................................................... 396-9308 Party Pronto “We have EVERYTHING?” Parties, Events, Weddings, Carnivals, Performers Margarita Machines Chocolate Fountains Champagne Fountains Tables & Chairs Linens, China, Glassware Jumpers, Slides Obstacles Courses Party Supplies Toys & Gifts Custom Piñatas 215 S, First Avenue, Arcadia www.partypronto.com Open 7 Days Page 4 CHAPMAN WOODS CALL Block Reps The Block Reps play a vital communication role within our neighborhood and between neighbors. Winter 2008 First Annual Martini Party! Chapman Woods celebrated its first Annual Martini Party on Saturday, October 18th at the home of Mary and Harry Greenwood. Attendance exceeded expectations (over 65 guests), and by the end of the event many people were seeing twice as many folks as they thought they had earlier! The weather permitted an outside party, and the patio was full of conversation and fantastic food. Michael Ruszczynski provided a variety of martini flavors (pomegranate, apple and chocolate) prepared from a secret family recipe handed down since the invention of the apple. Traditional martinis were also available, and all the variations were thoroughly tested by our guests. Results will be published as soon as the testers are coherent again. The diversity of the crowd (and our neighborhood) was very evident, as conversation topics ran from the economy, politics and global warming, to noisy pets, ideas for neighborhood beautification projects, and “why I can’t seem to lose those last 5 pounds.” A last-minute surprise was the removal of the “costper-drink” requirement; a policy the Association hopes to be able to continue for many of the Chapman Woods events in the future. All in all, the party proved to be incredibly successful, and we hope it’s a forerunner of many neighborhood get-togethers in the future! We’re all looking forward to the Holiday Party on December 7th, a Tennis Tournament in January, and a host of gatherings throughout 2009! We hope to see you there! Watering Tips With winter approaching and cooler temperatures, don’t forget to cut back on your yard watering — twice a week is plenty. Also, occasionally turn your sprinklers on and walk around your yard. We’ll bet that you will find a few that are poorly positioned or broken, reducing the effectiveness of your watering. Page 7 CHAPMAN WOODS CALL WOW News Zoe TeBeau, Certified Appraiser of Personal Property For our September program, WOW members enjoyed another entertaining and informative Chapman Woods Antique Roadshow. Each member brought a cherished family possession for Zoe TeBeau of the International Society of Appraisers to evaluate. Her explanations of the cultural heritage and history associated with each object was fascinating. She cautioned everyone to have possessions evaluated by a professional before selling or otherwise disposing of them, as their value may not be obvious to family members. She also advised keeping pairs and other sets together to enhance their overall value. Gavigan also provided important information on preparing for an earthquake. She reminded everyone that Southern California is overdue for the “big one.” She urged all to be sure to have emergency food, water, and medical supplies on hand to last at least 7 to 10 days. One gallon of water per person per day is especially important. Using flowers from Vel’s beautiful gardens, special guest and licensed Ikebana teacher, Mari Prasad, demonstrated how to make an elegant arrangement with just a few carefully chosen natural elements. She explained that the long history of Ikebana has produced many styles, both traditional and contemporary. Although the discipline has basic rules for balancing nature and humanity, there is plenty of room for creativity. WOW’s December Schedule WOW’s have also been busy organizing the “Save the Date with Santa” Party on Sunday, December 7 to be held at the home of Terry and Tony Clougherty. Winter 2008 WOW-WOW News In late October, the WOW-WOW’s traveled to “Germany” for an authentic October Fest! Hostess Amy Callister planed the menu and delegated this to the 12 ladies attending who did an outstanding job preparing the theme food. Amy’s best friend, Becky, a dachshund, greeted all and added to the festive look of the home. Amy made a delicious meatloaf (hard boiled eggs tucked inside the loaf...think of Hamburg) and Karlene Morris treated the ladies with another of her special desserts. The Holiday season will find WOW WOW’s gathering on December 28th for wine & appetizers and a Tri Tip dinner with all the trimmings. The ladies would be thrilled to share the fun with new faces! Send your news to editor@chapmanwoods.net Chips Off The Block The last two months have been truly special for the Murray Family of Yorkshire Road, especially for husband, Dan. In October, he received the Alumni Fellow Award from his alma mater, Pennsylvania State University. There, we had a experience that I want. And now I can sample it for ten months. I’m attending Pasadena High School and I’m a senior. This year I’m not going to graduate, because my goal in America is to feel and understand the culture and the people. I already have some A’s, so I’m happy. And there wasn’t a better city than to place me than in Pasadena, California. The things I love already are the people I have met, the weather, of course, and the differences I have noticed. One example are the doggie bags. I’m not used to that at all. In the Netherlands, we never bring our food home in a bag; so the first time I saw it I was so surprised. Another difference is the weather - I hear the news from Holland that it’s cold and raining again - here it feels like summer all the time! Well now you know a little bit more about me. I hope I’ll get to know each one of you. Eagle Scouts Matthew, Julius, Audra, Thatcher, and Mia mini family reunion with Dan’s family who came to attend this special event. Dan was also honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to several groups of Penn State students and to share with them his own business experience and career advice. Just two weeks before our trip to the east coast, Dan was awarded the Los Angeles Business Journal CFO of the Year (Small Private Company). Aiden Seine of San Pasqual Street and Karl Soetter, both seniors at Pasadena High School, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor that can be achieved in the Boy Scouts. Last summer, Aiden and Karl spent 7 days backpacking into the back country mountains of New Mexico – a challenging adventure. Karl’s dad, Pete, accompanied the troop. Congratulations to both Aiden and Karl for a wonderful adventure and to Pete for surviving! Josie and David Beringer and Chris and Reema Kuptz 3600 Yorkshire’s Progressive Party On Saturday, October 4th, several residents hosted a Progressive Party for our very own block. We started our evening at the home of Harry and Harry Campbell, Huasha Liu, Loretta Hoffman and Sandy Campbell Sandy Campbell for a beautiful and delicious array of appetizers. After mingling a bit, we continued on to the home of Peter Hughes for a delicious seared ahi tuna salad with miso dressing. As the evening progressed, we journeyed to the home of Tim and Kimm Thornton who offered outdoor oven-baked pizzas and pasta. We ended the evening at the home of Bob and Loretta Hoffman with more beverages and brownies, cookies and ice cream sundaes! After seeing all dishes that night, we figured out there are some good cooks on Yorkshire! The adults enjoyed getting to know each other as neighbors better and the children were children, they had a blast! Till our next annual 2009 Progressive Party! Welcome Karla Enrequez! Hello from the Netherlands! You probably already heard about a Dutch girl, maybe some gossip or you have seen me walking around. But here I am to introduce myself. The event was held at the Copeland/Huberman home. 62 Phineas and Ferb fans attended. The event began with a video of 1 of the shows. Over 30 children sat enthralled on the floor as they watched Phineas and Ferb build a haunted house to cure their friend Isabella of hiccups. (The character Isabella was named after Dan and Clarissa’s first daughter.) After the opening video, Dan entertained questions from the floor. Our children were wonderful raising their hands to get the answers they wanted. One boy asked Dan, “So does these mean that you are practically famous?”. As the voice of Phineas and Ferb’s mad scientist and villain, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, Dan engaged everyone with his laugh. He drew animations from current and previous shows with renditions of Looney Tunes and Spongebob Squarepants characters. All of the children left with smiles on their faces and gifts Dan brought from the Disney Channel and signed copies of the drawings he created that evening. Thank you to the McPeckPovenmire family for their sharing Dan Povenmire drawing Sponge Bob Square Pants and generosity. Very interested audience members with Dan! After being an eyesore for at least 15+ years, the Wilson Middle School Tennis Courts have been completely renovated. There are newly poured concrete slabs, a variety of new posts, and high-quality fences and doors. The tallest posts were installed for possible future lighting (subject to community approval). The beautiful Blue/Green medium speed painted surface is the same that is used at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, home of the U.S. Open Grand Slam of Tennis. We want to play now! The Chapman Woods Board has been meeting with Ruth Esseln, Principal of Wilson Middle School and Joan Fauvre, Executive Director of the Pasadena Educational Foundation. The meetings are focused on Chapman Woods community usage of courts. Right now, they’re locked 100% of the time—only the school can use the courts until a public usage agreement has been finalized. It’s a complicated matter: the courts are owned by PUSD not the city of Pasadena. Permits are required to use PUSD property. Also, rules need to be put in place to protect these beautiful new tennis courts. Coming Chapman Woods Tennis Events! There are now preliminary plans for the 2009 Chapman Woods Benefit Tennis Tournament. Funds raised from the tournament entry fees (& donations!) will be used to purchase tennis rackets, balls, and other tennis equipment for Wilson Middle School’s physical education program. Here are a few early details: the tournament will be held on a Sunday, matches will be scheduled starting in the morning going through the early afternoon. Before the finals, we have a very special event scheduled. Following the presentation of the trophies, a celebratory BBQ will be held on Wilson Middle School’s front yard for all Chapman Woods residents. Want to be involved in this fun event? Please contact Michael Ruszczynski at publisher@chapmanwoods.net Fall Danish & Coffee Party On October 11, the Chapman Woods Association Board threw a Saturday morning “Thank You” party for our tireless volunteer Block Reps. About 20 happy people gathered at the home of Michael Ruszczynski on Thorndale for a feast of croissants, coffeecake, and fruit Danishes. Many Block Reps who attended had never met each other, so it was a wonderful time to be able to share experiences with each other. All morning the conversation and laughter flowed! Gerie O’Connor, Block Representative Coordinator, gathered the group together at the party’s mid-point and thanked them for their service and reminded them to get to know the residents on their blocks. Another Block Rep event is in the works! FYI: Your Block Rep would like to get to know you and can be your voice to the Chapman Woods Board and the rest of the community! Over the past 3 months there has been an increase in auto break ins. In all cases, personal property items were left in the vehicle, most in plain sight. If you have a choice, park in your garage and lock the doors. If you need to park your car in your driveway or on the street, it is very important to remove valuable items such as cell phones, I-Pods, etc. PLEASE NOTE: In several cases these incidents were NOT reported to the Sheriffs Department. It is imperative to do so for many reasons, especially as your report may indicate a trend or a gang working the area. The Sheriffs Department can’t help if they do not know. Winter 2008 A Post Alarm Story On a Sunday afternoon in October, we were talking our dog for a walk and were almost home when we noticed 2 teenagers/young adults loitering on the lawn at the corner of San Pasqual and Halstead. They were not Chapman Woods residents. We watched for a while from our kitchen window and after about 10 minutes, decided to call Post Patrol. Being a subscriber, Post was there within a minute. Knowing that we have had some attempted car break-ins, we are grateful to Post for alleviating a potential problem. If you are not a subscriber, we encourage you to become one.
