There is an economic trend in
banking. Large is getting larger
and big is getting bigger. The
phenomenon is not restricted
to Bank of America, Chase or
Citibank. The practice is
spilling over into the credit
union sector where the ability
to provide a broad product
platform while maintaining
membership numbers forces
the merge or collapse of many.
Still, we are working feverishly
to prove that big is not always
better.
In fairness of disclosure for
those who may not know, we
are not a tiny, single branch
credit union. We have five local branches but frankly being a mega, multi-state credit union simply
isn’t in our plans. Right now our main priority is our members. That’s why we have taken your
constructive, and sometimes critical, comments seriously to come up with more attractive and techsavvy membership perks to give you more of what you want and the service you deserve.
For example, mortgages and indirect loans offered at local auto dealerships are not mechanically
approved. (FYI, our auto loan rate of 2.39%apr is one of the lowest in the city, just saying...) In a
Gen-X kind of way, our auto loan manager is available whenever a dealership needs a loan approval.
Even on weekends and evenings and loans can physically be approved within 10 minutes.
By no means is the Gen-X culture something of the norm at GCU, but look for that to change as
more time and attention is given towards evolving in a way that promises to maintain and attract
those members. Much like the loan officer who accepts and approves loans via smart phone, the
tech-conscious credit union offers PopMoney for members who no longer value currency exchange.
The electronic PopMoney allows members to pay vendors, babysitters or friends through the
Internet or their smart phone. Money is electronically transferred with a few swipes of a phone.
In just a few short weeks get ready to see a whole new online look, as we launch a new website that
brings a trendy and sophisticated look together with user friendly functionality. It also has several
new features including an array of finance calculators and something for members of all ages.
Future plans include account aggregation, which provides one site for checking, savings and loan
accounts with tools for budgeting and bill reminders. Another step toward the new model of
business designed to please the youngest generation of credit union membership.
Of course, there is more to the mix than smart phone access and loan officers “on call.” The revamp
is evidenced in our “out of the box” bricks and mortar branches where our trendy teller “pods” and
coffee stations have proven to be big hits and conversation starters among members new and old.
The physical interior design sends a message that this is not your grandparents’ credit union and is a
visual reminder of why we are ready to leap into the future.
Oh, and mobile banking is coming soon...although you can already access your account through your
mobile browser at gencu.org.

veryone can use some extra cash to pay for tuition, home improvements, vacation, bills, or to have some extra
money for those unexpected expenses. That’s why GCU will again provide the Skip-A-Payment* program to our
members. All loan payments (except mortgages, home equities, delinquent or single payment loans) will be skipped in
August 2012 unless you advise us not to skip your payment(s).
If your payment is made by payroll deduction or direct deposit, your loan payment funds will remain in your account.
Also, you can choose to skip another payment any time (qualifying accounts only). The fee for this additional skip
is $25. If you have any questions or do not want to participate in the Skip-A-Payment program, please call us at

What members can do to help: GCU is committed to
protecting the privacy of its members. Members can help by
following these simple guidelines. 1. Protect your account
numbers, plastic card numbers, PINs or passwords. Never
keep your PIN with your card, which can provide free access
to your accounts if your card is lost or stolen. 2. Use caution
when disclosing your account numbers, social security
numbers, etc. to other persons. If someone calls you
explaining the call is on behalf of the credit union and asks
for your account number, you should beware. Official credit
union staff will have access to your information and will not
need to ask for it. 3. Keep your information with us current. If
your address or phone number changes, please let us know.
It is important that we have current information on how to
reach you. If we detect potentially fraudulent or unauthorized
activity or use of an account, we will attempt to contact you
immediately. 4. Let us know if you have questions. Please do
