United Way of Northwest Georgia 2004 Annual Report Message from our Chairman 2 2004 Volunteers 3 What Matters™ 11 Investments in Community 14 Corporate Investors 19 Financial Statements 21 www.ourunitedway.org Message from our Chairman The United Way of Northwest Georgia continued its focus in 2004 of identifying areas in which we can have the most positive impact on the community. While continuing to support broad-based programs, we will need to consider shifting resources to focus on other areas identified as priorities for our community’s overall health and success. Our community is at a crossroads, so we must be focused with our resources and invest in programs which will move us in the right direction as a community and collaborate with new community partners on key issues. The strategic planning process which canvassed input from over 450 people told us that education, leadership, economic development, multicultural issues, family, and health care are the most pressing community concerns facing Whitfield and Murray Counties. While not all of the issues raised are primary to the mission of United Way, we must be supportive and collaborative with those whose mission is directly aligned. Integrity, leadership, volunteerism, partnerships, and commitments are the dynamics with which United Way will address these community concerns and are the foundation for the strategic plan which will carry us into 2010. This “voice of the community” is not only a powerful roadmap. It is also a relevant assessment for all our community partners: social service agencies, government, education, and all concerned citizens. Thank you for your support of the United Way of Northwest Georgia and the investment of your time, talents, and treasure. Your commitment to what matters in our community improves the lives of so many each and every day. Sincerely, Vance Bell, Chairman Board of Directors Our Mission: To increase the organized capacity of the people of Northwest Georgia to care for one another. 2 www.ourunitedway.org 2004 United Way Volunteers Executive Committee Penny Carpenter Bradley Arnold Finance Chair Community Solutions Chair Whitfield County Government The Morehouse Firm Vance Bell Chairman of the Board Shaw Industries Tom Dickson Personnel Chair Community Volunteer Allen Bentley Fund Distribution Chair Schlotsky’s Deli Bryan Hair Campaign Chair Marketing Alliance Fran Brantley Strategic Planning Chair J&J Industries Shane Lovingood Major Gifts Chair Lovingood Law Carolyn Roan Volunteer Services Chair Coldwell Banker-Kinard Realty Mitch Sanford Marketing Chair Wachovia Bank, N.A. connection, for 15,854 requests for services in 2004. United Way provided the clearinghouse for 8,200 people to receive gifts, food and clothing during the holidays. Approximately 1,000 of these people received gifts through direct donations to United Way for Christmas. Campaign Under a tough economic environment, with world conflict, and with further industry challenges, United Way met the goal of $3,500,000 for Northwest Georgia. Of that, $3,200,000 will be used in Whitfield and Murray Counties. $300,000 was designated by donors to be sent to other communities and non-profits. Winner of the Fleur de Lis award for the most new Alexis de Tocqueville Members - 68 members representing 20% of the 2004 campaign with 10 of those members being new members. Make A Difference Day United Way provided over 434 people with meaningful volunteer experience through Make A Difference Day at Creative Arts Guild, Dalton Little Threatre, Family Support Council, Habitat For Humanity, and the Conasauga River Shed Clean-up for a total of 1444 hours of community improvements. Strategic Planning In 2004 the United Way of Northwest Georgia began a strategic planning process to provide a roadmap to guide the organization into 2010. One of United Way’s continuing objectives is to make sure we stay attuned to ever-changing community needs and to make sure our programs and funding stay relevant in order to provide solutions. Our strategic planning process accomplished this by gathering community input on opportunities for both United Way and the overall community. While continuing to support broad-based programs, we will need to consider shifting resources to focus on newly identified key challenges. Input was gathered during a series of meetings in 2004 from fifteen focus groups comprised of over 450 residents of Murray/Dalton/Whitfield. The questions asked addressed both community and United Way issues. From the input gathered, six critical community concerns were identified: Education, Community Leadership, Economic Development, Multicultural Concerns, Family Concerns, and Health Care. Integrity, leadership, volunteerism, partnerships, and commitments are the dynamics with which United Way will address these community concerns; additionally, these are the foundation of our Strategic Plan to carry us into 2010. www.ourunitedway.org 11 Way 2004 Highlights...What Matters ™United of Northwest Georgia Youth Needs Assessment Youth from nine public middle schools in Whitfield and Murray county were surveyed to determine what type of current activities they participate in and what activities might be of interest to them. The survey also asked the students what they would like parents and the community to provide for their well being. Surveys were completed by 4,559 students. Results are being tabulated with a full report expected in summer 2005. These results will benefit not only United Way, but other organizations as they plan for future programming needs. Volunteer Awards Banquet United Way provided over 53 individuals and 10 area groups with public recognition of volunteer activities through the Youth Volunteer Banquet and the Adult Volunteer Luncheon both held during National Volunteer Week. Adult Award Winners Connie Woodward Award for Outstanding Volunteerism Robert Webb Director of Corporate Communications - Mohawk Industries Robert is a board member of the Whitfield Education Foundation and has helped the school system by obtaining arts funding for Varnell and Eastside Elementary. He funded technology and learning materials as well as holiday gifts for needy families at Eastside and became their first resource person taking his time to lead 50 Eighth graders in creative thinking and writing. In 2000, he established Make A Difference Day in Whitfield County bringing 150 area high school students together for special projects in the community each year. So far, he orchestrated cleaning homes of the homebound elderly, renovated and landscaped Cheerhaven, painted Carter Hope Center, landscaped Memorial Garden for the victims of the Northwest Elementary School bus accident, and landscaped Whitfield Dalton Day Care. Robert spearheaded the transformation of old City Park School into a daycare center. He was instrumental in the development of the United Way Community Connection Website and helped them become a finalist for the Techbridge Award for Advancing Community through Technology. Robert is also Chairman of the Creative Arts Guild Board. Besides curating exhibits, he secured the largest outdoor sculpture exhibit in the state. He was the driving force in establishing the Bernice Spigel Prize in Visual Arts. Robert’s nomination of Catherine Evans Whitener lead to her induction into the Georgia Women of Achievement Honors and statewide recognition of female pioneers in the flooring industry. 12 www.ourunitedway.org 2004 Highlights...What Matters ™ Youth Award Winners Individual Award Winners Raven Nicole Hughey Elementary School Raven, goes to Pathway Christian School, and is truly an exceptional young volunteer. She has worked with Special Olympics, training and swimming with the Swimming Salamanders team and also helping special needs athletes train for horseback riding competition. She loves to help people and does not see any difference in her and the athletes she works with. This comes from having a brother with special needs and growing up with him. For Raven it is not a sacrifice, or something to take up time. She really sees what she does as a part of life. Raven sees the whole child from the inside out, rather than the outside, then looking in. Donald McCurry “Curry” Bentley High School By volunteering his time in the Special Education Department at Northwest High School, Curry is an invaluable assistant to both teachers and fellow students. Teachers depend on his initiative and sense of responsibility. He stays on top of minute tasks that might be overlooked by a busy teacher. He cares for the well being of each severe/profoundly (SID/PID) handicapped special education student. Even with the significant limitations of this group, Curry offers the same treatment and support he would give to any other student. He exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism. Kevin Reilly College Kevin is a sophomore at the University of Georgia. During his Christmas break, he gave five of his precious “free days” between semesters to work on the 51foot wheelchair ramp which Project Success, Shaw Industries, and United Way built for a disabled Whitfield County community member. Kevin threw himself into the project completely and was the most faithful member of the group. He made sure he was on the job every day, and even developed a bond with the gentleman for whom the ramp was built. Kevin considers helping others and being of service to them an excellent use of his “free time”. Group Award Winners City Park Intermediate School The student body of City Park exemplifies community service. Each year students become involved with the Osha Jackson Memorial Pennies for Presents Drive. The students collected 1, 736 pounds of pennies totaling over $3000. This money went to help needy families at City Park and the Dalton Public School District, with food, clothing and toys during the holiday season. Due to the tremendous effort put forth by the students, they were able to adopt nine families, totaling 26 individuals. The team effort, excitement and volunteerism of all involved in the project are true examples of compassion and humanity. Student Volunteers for Special Bruins This unique group of teenagers spends time every day meeting the needs of the severe/profoundly handicapped students in the Special Education Classroom. These exceptional youth learned how important it is for people with disabilities to be treated just like people without disabilities. To be included, accepted, and to know your peer group cares. www.ourunitedway.org 13 2004 Investments In Community Alzheimer’s Association received an allocation of $65,000, which provided: • 6,198 hours of respite care to 55 families • 20 visits to the Caring Closet American Red Cross-Dalton Chapter received an allocation of $120,528, providing: • Basic needs for 102 victims of house fires • Disaster Services training for 20 • Health and Safety training for 3,200 • Emergency communications to 65 members of the Armed Forces and their families • Health and Safety community programs and services to 6000 • Support for 250 Red Cross Volunteers at Hamilton Medical Center American Red Cross-Murray County Chapter received an allocation of $95,000, which provided: • 22 Military families with 24 hour a day emergency communication services and hardship loans • Support for 150 volunteers • 91 individuals with shelter, food and clothing for disaster relief • 3819 individuals with community disaster education materials • 3068 individuals served from the Chapter food bank • 438 people gave the gift of life by donating blood • 3000 individuals received Health and Safety courses and lifesaving information and materials Big Brothers Big Sisters received an allocation of $222,400, providing: • 1414 children with in-school Buddy mentors in 35 schools in Dalton, Murray and Whitfield school systems spending 30,800 hours building skills necessary to enrich their lives • 106 children with a mentor as Big Brothers and Big Sisters seeing them afterschool, on weekends and in the summer spending 15,600 hours • 1600 parents with moral support by working with their children • 32 grandparents and grandchildren with 200 hours of activities Boehm Birth Defects Center received an allocation of $10,000, providing: • 37 clients with services in Whitfield and Murray counties (includes physician, nursing and social services) • 59 outpatient physician visits • 6 inpatient surgeries • 13 outpatient diagnostic procedures • 93 inpatient hospital days • 35 meal tickets to caregivers • 21 admissions to TC Thompson Children’s Hospital • $131 cash assistance • 3 gas vouchers 14 www.ourunitedway.org 2004 Investments In Community Boy Scouts received an allocation of $102,113, which provided: • 5,190 youth each week with a Scouting program of Character Development, Citizen Training, and Character Education • 479 Adult Mentors with Adult Leader Training, Facility, and Program resources, and Youth Protection training opportunities • Over 1,200 individuals in the Latino community served through the Scoutreach programs Boys and Girls Club received an allocation of $25,000, which provided: • 467 youth and teens with home work help, tutoring assistance, character and leadership development programs, drug and alcohol prevention, summer, teen, and afterschool programs Carter Hope Center received an allocation of $68,500, which provided: • A residential, long-term structured living environment for 143 addicts/alcoholics - providing two meals daily, relapse prevention education, individual counseling, support and self help groups • Meeting space so that 350 people had a place to participate in 12-step meetings • 9,044 bed nights with a cost of $28 per bed night Cheerhaven received an allocation of $118,605, which provided: • 31 people with supported employment • 51 people with day habilitation services • Additional supports in Community Integration Activities, Music • Therapy, Computer Discovery Classes, Transportation, and Continuing Education Courses to persons with disabilities and Art Therapy.
