Letter from our Executive Director and Board President
Senior Services reaches across all ages, all neighborhoods, and all walks of
life to provide support. We work with grandparents struggling to raise their
grandchildren and younger caregivers torn between supporting their own
family and caring for an older parent. Every day we are reminded of our
impact through the sigh of relief in a daughter’s voice when she is told her
father will receive home-delivered meals, or a grandfather laughing with his
grandson as their new family’s basic needs are better met and they begin
to relate to one another through simple enjoyment of activities together.
Our services affect more than the individuals we serve; they encompass
the whole family. From there, they ripple into the neighborhoods and
throughout the community. Healthy aging is catching —
• You help us.
• We help the individual.
• The individual’s family grows healthier.
• Our community thrives because seniors and their caregivers who receive help can not only do better themselves, but even help others.
Through the continued generosity of our supporters, Senior Services has
been able to endure the financial challenges that struck the nation in
2008. We are so integral to the fabric of our community that individuals, foundations, and corporations continue
to believe in our work. Today, Senior Services leads the way for King County seniors, as both a resource and a
community partner, empowering all older adults and those who love them to make the critical, difficult decisions
from which few of us can escape as we age.

Senior Centers
Incorporated
Senior Centers Incorporated (SCI) was founded by a group of
community partners to serve area senior centers. Today, the
organization is known as Senior Services and has grown in its focus to
serve the needs of individual seniors as well as senior centers.

Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels was the first program in King County to provide
frozen meals to seniors in our community. The model was designed
so that elders would receive a delivery of meals once a week,
allowing us to meet the needs of our seniors.

The board of SCI changed the name of SCI to Senior Services and

Information & Assistance became the first organization in

Referral Systems (AIRS). AIRS is the professional membership
Washington State (and only the third aging program in the country)
to achieve accreditation by the Alliance of Information and
organization for information and referral/assistance (I&R/A)
programs in North America.

Taproot Foundation Thank you to the Taproot Foundation for their

Microsoft Corporation In 2008, Senior Services was awarded a
generous in-kind software donation (valued at $365,000) to help

The Seattle Foundation’s Healthy Community framework.
Paul G. Allen Foundation Thanks to a Paul G. Allen Foundation
multi-year grant Senior Services continued to expand our Cultural
Competency Initiative.
At Senior Services we embrace the belief that cultural, social and
other differences should be respected and celebrated. We are
building a staff team with extraordinary cultural competence and
providing that team with tools to positively address institutional
racism. All our employees are responsible for providing and
supporting a culturally competent work environment that will enrich
our interactions with each other and our products and services.

Senior Services knows that information is critical and often difficult to find. Senior Services is the
greatest resource for information and advocacy, addressing the complex needs and challenges
related to health concerns, economic issues and general well-being of seniors, their families and
their caregivers in our area.
Senior Information & Assistance helps seniors
find resources to meet their daily needs, such as
assistance with paying utilities, housing, health care,
counseling, employment, etc. Our database of more
than 7,000 community services and our professional,
trained advocates make this one of the most
comprehensive information services in the country.

address issues of pressing importance to seniors and
their families. Senior Rights Assistance addresses legal

tenant concerns. Statewide Health Insurance Benefits
Advisors helps consumers with Medicare and other
health insurance matters. Mazuma introduces
financial and retirement planning to the general

Independence
For many seniors, their greatest desire is to remain independent. Senior Services’ Independence
programs allow elders to remain in their own homes by providing the support services that make this
be possible.
Meals on Wheels provides nutritious home-delivered
meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults
throughout King County. Our hundreds of volunteers
not only deliver meals, they act as gatekeepers for
the most vulnerable in our community. Mobile Market
provides groceries to homebound seniors in Seattle.

Minor Home Repair ensures that seniors’ homes are
accessible and safe, and that small repair problems
don’t develop into serious issues that endanger the
homeowner or their home. We provide repairs to
plumbing and electrical, as well as carpentry and
disability access assistance for eligible homeowners in
Seattle, Shoreline and Bellevue. Water Conservation
Project works in collaboration with Seattle Public Utilities
to help seniors save water and money by replacing
broken and leaking toilets, faucets and showerheads
with water-saving replacements.
Minor Home Repair
Senior Transportation uses community volunteers to
provide personalized, free transportation to medical
and other essential appointments throughout King
County. Our Senior Shuttles take seniors where they
need to go—appointments, shopping, Senior Centers,
Community Dining locations, etc.

key to this goal is providing opportunities for social engagement and activity.
Community Dining enhances and cultivates seniors’
social networks, improves their nutrition and sustains
their general well-being and happiness. Our
Community Dining sites are located throughout King
County and serve a diverse population of elders.

Adult Day Health Centers provide safe, comforting
care for frail adults with physical, mental and social
challenges associated with stroke, dementia,
memory loss, etc. Our three centers are located in
Bothell, Kirkland and Carnation.

In our healthy community, empowered elders who need help
will know where to find information, advice, and support.
Empowered elders will also offer help and their lives will
take on a greater sense of purpose as they connect with
meaningful service opportunities.
We are building programs that include and engage older
adults and those who love them in an interdependent
community. A special responsibility for bringing this vision to
reality is ours as the premier provider, promoter and champion
