ISMHouston, Inc. Increased Its Membership
How Did This Affiliate Do It?
Deep in the heart of Texas, the ISM—Houston, Inc. affiliate has more than 900 total members.
What are some of the methods our affiliate uses to recruit and maintain members? While our affiliate seeks to
offer programs and dinner meeting topics that have a broad appeal and span generational lines to capture the
interest of all of our members, we have focused on three key areas to increase membership: 1) expanding the
Emerging Professionals Group (EPG), 2) engaging student members, and 3) focusing on providing professional
development events for our members.
The Emerging Professionals Group is a committee within ISM—Houston that focuses on the development of
supply management professionals in the first 10 years of their careers. EPG was formed in late 2011 and has
grown from seven to more than 200 members today. EPG targets two to three events per year with a mix of
professional speakers, socials and
other activities. One such event last
year was a speaker at a wine
distribution facility followed by a
social mixer.
Another focus for ISM—Houston has
been to expand its presence with local
university students. A popular event is
the Professional Development
Committee’s coordination of a CPSM®
Exam review at Texas A&M. The
University of Houston (UofH) supply
chain management student

students have enjoyed the benefits of networking and hearing speakers at dinner meetings (at a reduced dinner
fee), attending socials, participating and presenting at board meetings and joining the EPG organization.
ISM—Houston also strives to add value to our members through increased offerings of professional development
programs. In fact, many of the employers in Houston, particularly in the medicine, energy and technology fields,
2
encourage employees to join ISM, attend continuing education events and obtain certification. We provide
members with opportunities to obtain Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) through monthly meeting speakers,
panels and seminars, and we offer plant tours and certification review sessions. We provide career services
seminars, executive panel discussions and centers of excellence to focus on core supply management topics. The
membership activities committee also holds semiannual pre-meetings and happy hours for new members with the
intent to welcome them into the ISM community. To ensure we support various segments of our members, we
strive to hold events at different times and locations, and we recently completed a review of our membership’s
geographic locations to assess where the ideal venue is for the monthly meetings.
We hope to continue to grow our membership base and attendance at events by continuing to focus on the needs
of our members, particularly with the development of our Emerging Professionals Group, interactions with local
students and offering events that ISM members and employers see as value-add. If you would like to learn more
about any of the above initiatives, please contact any of the ISM—Houston board members.

members/US$149.50 nonmembers for each exam on Saturday, April 27, 2013, in Dallas/Ft. Worth). You’ll save

One Exam to Become a CPSD™
If you are an active CPSM® or C.P.M., you only need to pass one exam to become a Certified Professional in
Supplier Diversity® (CPSD™). Everyone else is required to take two exams to become a CPSD™.
If you are responsible for supplier diversity initiatives in your organization, you need to look at the CPSD™
certification to demonstrate you are on top of this growing trend in sourcing and supply management. With major
players requiring their partners to use diverse suppliers and the need to maintain a competitive edge, if supplier
diversity is not already on your organization's radar, it will be soon.
Learn more about the CPSD™ today.

If you are studying for the CPSM® Exam and prefer in-class instruction to assist in your studies, there is an

ISM Hospitality Suite Policy
Hospitality suites are to have a business emphasis as opposed to social in order to stay within the educational
purpose of the International Supply Management Conference of the Institute for Supply Management™. Hours of
operation should not conflict with other conference activities.
ISM has no desire to discourage informal get-togethers during periods of time when there are no scheduled
Conference events. While it may be difficult to discern the exact difference between business and socially
oriented suites, or informal get-togethers, it is intended that such activities not leave the association open to
criticism. Ethical considerations are and remain of prime concern to the Institute for Supply Management™.
In the Latest Edition of eSide Supply Management: Negotiation Excellence &
Nonverbal Strategies, Career Advice From the C-Suite
The latest edition of eSide Supply Management, ISM’s bimonthly e-publication for up-and-coming supply
management professionals — and exclusive member benefit — is now online.
Inside the January/February 2013 edition, you’ll find these articles:

Not All Negotiators Are Created Equal — Years in the making, the innovative Negotiation Center of
Excellence model at Intel allows the corporate strategic procurement team to examine fit, complexity,
planning and preparation — as well as strategy development — before every negotiation. The result is
exceptional bottom-line results.

Control Yourself, Control the Negotiation — Everyone unconsciously emits verbal and nonverbal cues
during a negotiation which belie a sense of waning confidence. Controlling these cues in yourself (and
reading them in others) offers a huge advantage. Here’s how.

Strong Connections: Cengage Learning — The success of the supply chain for this major learningmaterials provider hinges on its ability to micromanage inventory and transportation.

Career ROI: Advice From the C-Suite — How to fight the battle for talent when your organization lacks
name recognition.

Social and Environmental Responsibility in the Supply Chain Gets a Seat at the Table — A recent
SCM World report shows corporate executives are more concerned than ever with their supply chains’
social and environmental responsibility (SER) performance.
6

CPSM® and CSM™ Update: 3 Questions, 3 Answers — In every edition, eSide offers three sample
questions — and answers — from the CPSM® and CSM™ Diagnostic Kit to help you prepare to pursue
your CPSM® or CSM™ certification.

Research & Surveys: A Different Take on Turnover — A recent The Conference Board Review cover
story — Let Your People Go — challenges commonly held notions surrounding employee retention rates.

Business Etiquette Tips: Denmark — In this edition of eSide Supply Management, we spotlight the
highly egalitarian country of Denmark.
