STRONGER Together YMCA of the Brandywine Valley YMCA of THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY 2014 Annual Report YMCA of the Upper Main Line Stronger Together YMCA of the BRANDYWINE VALLEY YMCA of the Upper Main Line Dear Friends, 2014 brought exciting new opportunities for the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley to serve even more children and families in our community. After months of thoughtful deliberation, we began a shared services collaboration with the YMCA of the Upper Main Line as the first step to fully uniting our two Associations. On June 17, 2014, the Boards of Directors of both Associations voted to form a new regional Association, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. The effective date of the merger was January 1, 2015 and we now serve more than 80,000 members at nine locations throughout Chester County and the Main LIne. • We’re preparing more children for school success. Our first class of 19 graduates from the Y’s new, full-day academic kindergarten proudly received certificates to the applause of family members. The full-day program offers students more opportunities for in-depth and individualized instruction. Preschoolers from our new Early Learning Readiness program centers in Coatesville celebrated their accomplishments with a ceremony that included parents and caregivers. The pilot program is designed to improve academic outcomes for children who are cared for by family, friends and neighbors. I am especially grateful to John On June 17, 2014 the Boards of Directors of YMCA of the Featherman, Joe Viscuso and • The YMCA of the Brandywine Brandywine Valley and YMCA of the Upper Main Line voted to unite and form a new, regional association. For the seniors living at Luther House in West Grove, these were “someday” projects, until 40 volunteers from the Jennersville Y stepped in to help. The volunteers are part of a new Y-USA signature program called Togetherhood, which encourages Y members to identify, lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the community where they live. Togetherhood volunteers plan a year of service that includes four community outreach projects. Service Committee Well Being Y volunteers, like Walt and Pam, rolled up their sleeves to help with cleaning projects, provide companionship and share lunch with the residents of the low-income apartment complex. Volunteers from a local Boy Scout troop joined the project to serve lunch donated by area businesses. “This is truly a wonderful thing that the Y is doing for seniors,” said resident Eileen Love as Togetherhood volunteers repaired a broken vacuum cleaner. “I am so grateful.” With a shared commitment to social responsibility, volunteers work side-by-side to bring about positive and lasting change. You’ll see Y volunteers filling Thanksgiving baskets with turkey and all the trimmings, wrapping holiday gifts for children in need, donating school backpacks and giving blood. Together, we’re strengthening the foundations of our community. “The friendships formed and the feeling you have of helping someone who is so grateful is pretty hard to express, and pretty hard to duplicate.” FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT • FOR HEALTHY LIVING • FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY SHOWING COMPASSION THROUGH ART When the kiln and pottery wheels were installed at the Kennett Area Y, members and staff couldn’t wait for the chance to discover and express their creativity. No one anticipated how these soft lumps of clay would provide new ways for the Y to serve our community. First, the Kennett Y joined the fight to end hunger by making soup bowls for the Kennett Food Cupboard’s annual Empty Bowl project. Teens from the Y’s Leader’s Club learned how to shape and glaze clay bowls, and members took turns at the pottery wheels to create beautiful works of art. The bowls were given as thank you gifts and many were auctioned to raise funds for the food cupboard. with colorful red ribbons. The hearts were handdelivered by the youth to the seniors, along with smiles and companionship. As the boxes of hearts emptied, one senior was sitting by herself, just as a young girl came up and handed her a beautiful heart. “I thought you had forgotten me,” said Mary, as she opened her gift. “This is my only valentine, thank you so much!” Then, creativity and compassion came together with a new project from the pottery studio. Knowing how isolated many seniors can be, especially in the winter months, Y members planned to “Spread the Love” at Kennett retirement homes for Valentine’s Day. Volunteers and kids from the youth pottery class created more than 250 carefully hand painted ceramic hearts, which they wrapped ~ Ken Woodward, Togetherhood volunteer 4YMCA OF THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY www.ymcagbw.org 5 COMMUNITY LEADERS Community Partner Award M&T Bank For more than a decade, M & T Bank has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Y. From sponsoring the Upper Main Line Y golf tournament, to serving on a Y Advisory Board, to supporting capital improvements and financial assistance programs that ensure everyone has access to the Y, the Y counts M & T Bank as one of our most steadfast partners. Thank you for all you do for our Y and the community. Receive the Y’s Highest Honors Distinguished Service Award The YMCA’s Community Partner Award recognizes an organization or group that has demonstrated a commitment to the YMCA’s mission and values and has partnered with or supported the Y in outreach initiatives that strengthen the foundations of our community. Joseph Viscuso and Charles “Rip” Tilden We are pleased to honor Joe Viscuso and Rip Tilden with the Distinguished Service Award. Joe and Rip served as the Chairs of the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and YMCA of the Upper Main Line, respectively, and are enthusiastic champions for the work of the Y. Together, they guided their Y organizations through the process to become a single, united organization. Through their leadership, both Associations voted in June 2014 to unite as the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, serving Chester County and the Main Line. We are grateful for their hard work and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of children and families in our community. The YMCA’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes the effort and achievement of the YMCA’s most special friends and emphasizes the need for community service by all our citizens. Recipients of this award have set a standard of leadership that others may follow. Service to Youth Award Delaware Valley Children’s Charity & Fred Gunther Delaware Valley Children’s Charity When families are struggling to make ends meet, the holidays can bring even more stress and pain. For 29 years, Delaware Valley Children’s Charity has been making the holidays brighter for families in need. With their leadership, more than 7,000 children received new, wrapped holiday gifts in 2014. Each year, hundreds of volunteers gather at the Upper Main Line Y to load truck after truck with gifts. We’re pleased to honor this caring organization for inspiring community groups, businesses, families and individuals to bring a smile to a child’s face. Fred Gunther The Y has a strong ally in Fred Gunther – a passionate advocate for at-risk youth in our community. With Fred’s dedication to youth, through the Believe and Achieve Foundation, the Y has more resources to provide financially disadvantaged children with safe, high-quality afterschool care. Kids in the Believe and Achieve programs at the Y centers in West Chester, and now in Coatesville, find a caring environment to learn the positive values, behaviors and skills that can help shape their adulthood. Thanks to strong community partnerships, and a shared commitment to serving our neighbors, the Y has the support and resources to make a positive difference in the lives of kids, teens and families in our community. Coatesville service organizations partnered with the Y to provide hundreds of families with healthy fun at Ash Park Community Day. Citadel and NSM employees, along with police and school district staff, volunteered to make the day a success. Thousands of kids and families participated in Healthy Kids Day across our Association. The day is designed to inspire a love of physical activity, learning and healthy living habits. Healthy Kids Day is presented locally by Krapf Bus Companies. In 2014, the Y opened a new after school care program at the Gordon Building in Coatesville, thanks to support from the Believe & Achieve Foundation. The free program keeps kids active and learning, and gives parents and guardians peace of mind that their child is safe while they are at work. We are grateful to Susquehanna Bank for their support of Y preschool education by directing their state tax dollars to the Pennsylvania Educational Tax Credit program (EITC). EITC funding helps the Y provide a quality preschool education for low-income families. 2014 YMCA Fast Facts Members (as of 12/31/14) The YMCA’s Service to Youth Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose dedication and effort have made a significant and positive difference in the lives of children in our community. 6 COMMUNITY PARTNERS YMCA OF THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY Members Program Participants Total www.ymcagbw.org 46,701 9,163 55,864 Youth Program Participants Summer Camp Youth Sports Swim Lessons Supporters 2,752 8,631 4,179 Policy Volunteers 214 Program Volunteers 2,933 YMCA Staff 1,525 Preschool and School Age Childcare School Districts Served School Age Childcare Sites Children Served 9 29 2,688 7 Thanks to Our Donors Bronze - $1,000 to $2,499 The Y is accessible to everyone. We’ll never know how many tragic accidents are prevented each year through swim lessons at the Y. In 2014, more than 3,000 kids learned life-saving water skills through the Y’s free SPLASH program. The Y worked with local school districts and community centers to help students become water-aware. Kids learned critical skills like floating, treading water and safe diving. Children in need also receive new swimsuits, thanks to the generosity of Y members. One mom recently asked the guests coming to her son’s birthday party at the Y to donate new swimsuits, instead of bringing a gift. What a difference that makes to a child who may already feel unsure and afraid of the water! The Y is grateful to our 2014 SPLASH Association sponsors, NSM and Stillman Volvo for helping us keep kids safe in the water. YMCA of the BRANDYWINE VALLEY Association Office One E.
