Carrie Joyce, Judy Soulakis, Diana Gairdner, Janene Freitas, Jo Martin, Judy Friesen, Joanie Porter, Ann McEneaney, Ann Hyde, Norma McKibban, Joan Carlson, Linda Dietrich, Gayle Whitaker, Joan Kasman, Jacinta Loewen, Elaine Merz and I spent a day and a half with National Assistance League Visiting Team Members Phyllis Campbell and Cynthia Schaldenbrand. Occurring every four years, the chapter visit was both enjoyable and inspirational. The all around interchange of ideas and a sharing of experiences was invaluable. A huge THANK YOU to Carrie Joyce and her committee for planning such a delightful Member Appreciation Luncheon. Lots of photos are here in the Shorelines. The March 12th Regular Meeting will begin at 9:30 AM with coffee and an optional $3 breakfast provided by Ann McEneaney and her helpers. Joanie Porter and her committee have another excellent program. Ann Hyde, Nominating Committee Chairman, will present the Slate of Officers and Standing Committee Chairman for the 2012-2013 year. Joan Kasman will present the proposed Budget. The Election Meeting is Monday, April 9, 2012. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you and your prospective member guests at our next Membership Coffee on March 26th. Carrie Joyce and her Membership Committee are busy planning. Be certain to check out our new website: www.ALLagunaBeach.org. Ann Hyde and Jacinta Loewen led the way, urged on by others on the Public Relations Committee: Suzanne Foltz, Sally Lombardo, Linda Dietrich, Marlene Dryer, Carrie Joyce, Dixie Henry, Diane Gelfer, Donna Magwood, Janene Freitas, and Ann McEneaney. I’m looking forward to another month with each of you joyfully putting caring and commitment in action. LET’S GET ACQUAINTED WITH NEW MEMBERS Judy Upton I grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from Hanover College with a BA in Education and English, followed by MA from Cal State Fullerton in Administration. I taught 4-6 grade science in Cincinnati for one year then later moved to Long Beach and taught 6th graders in Garden Grove’s nationally recognized Gifted Program for 14 years. I served as an administrator in Fountain Valley before retiring from education to begin a 36 year career in real estate. Now I’m a broker associate with Surterre Properties along with my younger son Brad. I have lived in Laguna for 45 years and have two sons. Scott and Brad, who both grew up and currently live in Laguna. In the late 70’s, two friends and I purchased the Cliff Terrace Hotel across from Ralph’s and made it into Eiler’s Inn, a bed and breakfast hotel. Two years later, we sold the B and B and bought Rainbow Tavern Lodge near Truckee, CA. This wonderful old ski lodge of 120 acres has 32 rooms, restaurant, bar and the most delicious water from an underground spring. If only we’d had the capital to bottle the stuff we’d have been ahead of the craze and gotten rich! I’ve taken a few jewelry classes and hope to learn and do more of that in the studio at Laguna Woods. Grace Taylor I was born in England in the Cotswold’s district on a small farm. I received a degree in Early Childhood Education and met my husband, an American Air Force lieutenant, while teaching kindergarten on the U.S. Air Force Base near Oxford. We were transferred to a base in Louisiana for three years, where I continued teaching and was a Director of Youth Activities. Later we divorced and I moved to Houston where I had friends and remained for 38 years. I became Program Director of the YWCA for 12 years, worked in a battered women’s shelter and Head Start, and was a Hospital Director of Volunteers and Program Director for a retirement community for 15 years. While staying with a niece in Long Beach, we visited Laguna and I continued to return for 20 years and committed to retire here. Ultimately settling in Laguna in November 2010. I’m now a member of the Women’s Club and also volunteer weekly at the Senior Center. I have a passion for any activity that improves lives and brings involvement in the community. HONOREES On Membership Appreciation Day The Assistance League’s Circle of Honor recognizes and honors members for excellent service and accomplishments and, at the Member Appreciation Luncheon on February 13th. Mary Jane Yohe was surprised with the Circle of Honor pin. Mary Jane is currently our Parliamentarian, but she has played considerable roles within both our chapter and the national organization. Mary Jane was President when the Early Intervention Program (EIP) began in 1976, and she has been an AL Laguna Beach member for 41 years! Mary Jane will also be recognized at National Conference in Houston, September 2012. Congratulations, Mary Jane. Another Mary was honored with the Volunteer Member of the Year award during the February luncheon. Mary Connor couldn’t have been a more worthy person. One of her many ways of serving has been by her development of a shop orientation program and her orientation of new members to working in the shop. Mary has that special way of making all of us feel welcome and at ease. Thank you, Mary. Bobbie Howard and Annette Henry were given certificates denoting 20 years of membership in ALLB. Associate Member Maureen Somodi was given a very well deserved and touching tribute in absentia by Gayle Whitaker for her dedicated service each Wednesday morning at EIP. Former president, Trudy Pessin, was introduced as a member belonging since 1978 and was instrumental in the beginnings of our chapter. MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION LUNCHEON Carrie Joyce “Oh Yeah, I’ll Tell You Something” a groovy time was enjoyed by all who attended the February Membership Appreciation Luncheon! It was so much fun to see the eclectic sixties outfits designed and worn by our members. It was a beautiful cacophony of color to look out at the audience. Many thanks go to our Membership Committee for the wonderful creativity and production that made the luncheon a memorable event. Debby Bowes was responsible for the decorations and she dressed the attractive mannequins with clothes that were mostly her mom’s. How astute of her to know that someday she would need them for an Assistance League event. Jean Fitzgerald, Mary Connor and her granddaughter ably helped with the decorating. Larry Bowes is our “Assistance League Man” as he delivered the mannequins and made sure their attire was sheik. Gayle Whitaker was the instigator of the entertainment. Who would have ever thought we could get Sonny and Cher to perform for us! The luncheon menu was perfect for the occasion and Ann McEneaney and her committee were our chefs of the day and arrived early to have coffee available for the social half hour. Reservations are a very necessary function and Jo Martin capably managed this part. Carrie Joyce,Membership Chair, stands with her pal. Don’t we all remember this! Gayle Whitaker, AKA Cher, and Karen McBride, AKA, Sonny Lyrics by Gayle to “I Got You Babe” EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM Gayle Whitaker You may or may not know that our therapists who come each week to our Early Intervention Program also work with young children through another early intervention program and center, Intervention Center for Early Childhood (ICEC). ICEC is a nonprofit organization that serves over 600 special needs children and their families on an annual basis. The mission of ICEC is “to assist each developmentally delayed child in achieving optimum developmental potential. This is accomplished by providing global therapy and intervention designed for each child’s abilities, while offering emotional support and training to the entire family.” (ICEC website) Begun in 1976, the same year as EIP was founded, ICEC works with babies one year or older. Funded primarily through the State of California, specifically the Regional Center of Orange County, it gains additional funding, necessary for the success of the programs, through corporate and foundation grants, parent/family donations, and fundraising activities. This year’s fundraiser will be held on March 3rd, and as part of the program, the Early Intervention Program will be honored for its work with infants. We are very pleased to be recognized in this way and we will stand proudly when introduced. We wish all of ALLB could be there to accept this recognition, but in lieu of this, we will take lots of pictures and remember every moment of the event for retelling. Get your listening ears on! PHILANTHROPY Judy Soulakis I'm so pleased to report that our Assisteens have made a commitment to organize the treat bags for our Chapters for Children Program at Camp Pendleton as a major project this year. They will be coordinating and purchasing the contents of the bags, packing them, and helping with the distribution at Camp Pendleton. Congratulations, girls, for making this commitment and for your dedication to the Assistance League – we’re all very proud of you! FINANCE Joan Kasman The Budget Committee met on Monday, February 6 th and developed the Budget for 20122013. The Budget will be presented to the Board on March 5 th and to the members on March 12th. The Finance Committee is working with Fidelity Investments to invest our matured CD’s to new FDIC insured CD’s. National Assistance League advised all chapters that we cannot invest more than $250,000. in a particular bank. TURNABOUT SHOP Janene Freitas As usual the shop is running smoothly thanks to all of you. A very important reminder to all of you is don't forget to lock all doors at the end of the last shift. Also please remember at the end of your shift to clean up the shop area by putting away hangers, check clothing racks for items out of place, straighten linens, toys, books etc. If two ladies would count the money in the dining area, never in front of customers, the others could be locking up and straightening. We have recently been fortunate enough to have several ladies to volunteer in the back room and I would like to thank Shirley, Michelle, two Gayle's, Molly, and Diane. We are always looking for more ladies to help and if you are available please let me know. The long awaited locks have been changed and the new keypad system is in. I have emailed you all with the generic code to enter. Once I get the keypad coordinated with the computer I will be inputting all your names in the system and it will randomly select your own personal six digit code. When this task is finished I will let you know your code because the generic one will no longer be valid. The keypad will record the time and date you enter the shop. You will still have one key that is for the gates, parking chains, inside lock on customer door and the alley door. We have had the same keys for Assistance League for a very long time and it is time to update them all. Thank you for your patience in this process. Thank you once again to all of you for what you do. EDUCATION Joanie Porter This month we will be honored to have the founder of South County Crosscultural Council, Dr. David Peck. He will be presenting what his organization has done in the Laguna Beach area and also what is planned for the future. Gayle Rose, one of our newest members is also working with Dr. Peck’s committee and is very excited to have him come and educate us on his group. He will also be bringing with him Ms. Sally Rapuano, director of the La Playa Center ,who will tell us a bit about what they do at their center. ASSISTEENS The Assisteens met and filled tube socks for the Friendship Shelter. They also discussed looking into more philanthropies, which I advised them I would bring up to the Philanthropy Chairman, Judy Soulakis. The girls will be participating in the Patriot’s Day Parade, March 3rd and would love to have the full support of League members walking with them. Please do your best to get out and join the girls to show them they have the backing of the League members for all their efforts! Our next meeting, March 6, the girls have asked a local lifeguard to come and give them some pointers on water safety. (At least that’s what they’re claiming!) Happy Birthday 6 Patsy Tartaglia 16 Molly Jenett 9 Bunny Weber and Vickey Walston 22 Marlene Dryer 13 Elaine Merz 29 Kathy Fellows 14 Diane Liljestrom 29 Betty Von Der Lohe 31 Jackie Knauer PROSPECTIVE MEMBERSHIP COFFEE March 26 10:00am Bring your neighbors and friends and your “favorite cup” Call Carrie Joyce( 510-6633) 0r carriejoyce@cox.net with names of prospective members and their addresses by March 7 and the membership committee will send an invitation to each person you submit. PUBLIC RELATIONS Ann Hyde ALLB was honored by the radio station K-Earth 101 as Office of the Day. The station treated us to a huge variety of bagels and coffee and a serenade by singer/guitarist, Antonio. They took a group picture of us under our 50th Anniversary banner, and posted it on their website and also on Facebook. Although our actual air time was brief, we did get our name out over the air waves a couple times. Please visit our new website! Allagunabeach.org for news updates ,pictures videos and member resources. If you would like to post anything to the web site please contact Jacinta Loewen at 510-4636-c or 497-4946-h or jacinta.loewen@me.com We will be making quite a statement in the Patriots’ Day Parade. We will be number 18 in the line-up. We are usually 57 or higher so there will not be the long standing around time waiting to go. The reason for being so far up front is that we have two Assisteens being honored. The Assisteens will march in front of us and we will follow with our 50 th Anniversary banner, then a red Corvette convertible, thanks to Dixie Henry, and a blue BMW convertible, thanks to Carrie Joyce. Come march or ride on one of the convertibles with us! It will be fun and not the lengthy time consuming wait as in the past! The more people we have the better impression we will make. If you would like to participate, please contact Ann Hyde or Diana Gairdner for details. MEMBERSHIP Carrie Joyce Our next big event is the Spring Prospective Membership Coffee from 10:00 to 12 noon on March 26, 2012. The best avenue for gaining new members is through referrals from our members. Please accept the challenge of inviting a prospective member. Members are the backbone of our Assistance League. The Professionals held their monthly meeting on Thursday, February 16, 2012 and their emphasis is on gaining new members. Their spring project is to provide an Easter Basket for a Marine Family at Camp Pendleton. They also discussed the possibility of helping with the Assisteens. Diane Kloke presented an interesting program on her travel to Malaga. Love cannot remain by itself – It has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, And that action is service.
