October 2008 n. 7 October 2008 n. 7 October 2008 n. 7 01 VICTORY LOSE APPEAL Dubai’s Victory Team lost their appeal against the time penalty imposed on Victory 1 for hitting and destroying a turn buoy during the BMW Norwegian Grand Prix, a decision that cost the Championship leaders third place and three valuable points. The Appeal Committee found unanimously that the original protest hearing decision, and the related notification, were applied correctly and these were upheld by the Appeal Committee. During the hearing held in Milan, the committee reviewed the original evidence and further footage and statements provided by the Victory Team and found no new evidence to support their appeal. T he International Offshore Team Association (IOTA) has joined the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) in launching “Class 1 for Dhreima” – an initiative to support the Qatar Orphan Foundation. UNVEIL ‘SPIRIT OF SPAIN’ Duemme Broker’s Domenico Cirilli and Sergio Carrasco unveiled their new boat ‘Spirit of Spain’ and two-boat line-up, taking to the waters off Torrevieja, Spain, for a series of shakedown tests earlier this month. The new line-up will see the experienced Cirilli and Class 1 ‘rookie’ Sergio Mora Carrasco switch out of their Victory hull and into the Tencara with Class 1 Mercury V8 power-plants, with Giovanni Carpitella, who made his Class 1 debut in 2002, returning to the Championship to take the throttles in Roscioli Hotels Roma alongside Class 1 newcomer, Mohammed Abdelkader Ahmed from Spain. 04 JOTUN IN GOOD SHAPE After carrying out a series of successful pre-race tests, team manager, Per Carsten Michelsen, says “the team is in good shape and are where they should be in terms of improved performance levels”. The association between Class 1 and Dhreima will be developed over a series of activities that will take place at races during the course of the 2008 season, with the purpose of highlighting the activities of Dhreima and finding synergy with similar organisations based in countries that host Class 1 GP events. MAMAIA-CONSTANTA A DAY TO REMEMBER FOR ALL Children from a local orphanage will remember the day that they spent at the Romanian Grand Prix in Mamaia-Constanta for a very long time. Class 1 treated the group of youngsters to a wonderful day packed full of activities, meeting Sheikh Hassan and the pilots, riding in the boat parade, taking a tour of the pits and getting their hands on the rather unique Class 1 for Dhreima ‘lilo’. And in a special event to raise funds for the children’s home, a host of celebrities including the Mayor of Constanta City, Radu Stefan Mazare and TV personality, Mihaela Radulescu, Ambassador of the charity organisation United Way Romania, competed in the first ever Class 1 Nor-Tech Match Race. page 2 02 CIRILLI AND CARRASCO The Appeal Committee found no relevant safety issue to mitigate the incident and supported the decision that the responsibility to rejoin the race safely was with Victory 1. Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the QMSF and IOTA, was instrumental in encouraging Class 1 – a sport in which he has been a leading figure since 2003 – to become an active vehicle to raise awareness of the foundation. “In presenting this initiative I wanted to emphasise how sport, in whatever form or however extreme, can support the values and the importance of the activities of an organisation such as the Qatar Orphan Foundation.” The Qatar Orphan Foundation - Dhreima was launched on 10 June 2003 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser AlMisnad, Chairman of the Supreme Council. “We in the Qatari Orphan Foundation believe that our community values of solidarity, compassion and cooperation make us truly capable of providing all the support the children need,” said Nabil Ali Bin Ali, Chairman of the Dhreima Board, adding. “And we are extremely happy that the Class 1 Championship has elected to support the Foundation.” Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg, who have taken maximum points from their last two outings, used the sessions on the fjords of southern Norway at the team’s base in Arendal to put the Mercury-Class 1, V8powered Jotun through her paces to evaluate the recent modifications carried out by the team. “We have changed the air-intake and made one or two aerodynamic adjustments and Inge Brigt and Jorn are pleased with the results,” said Per Carsten. “We also used the session to run different rudder set-ups and worked on different propeller and ratio settings over a series of acceleration tests. We have found some extra speed and I feel we are in good shape.” 03 PARSONAGE AND NEGOTIATOR BACK TO FRONT-LINE ACTION Chris Parsonage returns to front-line action in Negotiator at this weekend’s Egyptian Grand Prix for only his second start of the season after crashing out of the first race in Qatar back in March. But with his regular driver, 2005 World Champion Bard Eker, unavailable, Parsonage has drafted in the services of the experienced American throttleman Billy Moore to take the sticks, with team boss Parsonage switching to take over driving duties, his first time behind the wheel for two years. The return of Negotiator means that four out of the ten boats lining up in Porto Marina will be running V8 power-plants; Negotiator and Qatar 95 with Sterlings and Spirit of Spain and Jotun with the Mercury-Class 1. page 3 October 2008 n. 7 October 2008 n. 7 JOTUN CHASING DOWN WIN HAT-TRICK T he newly-crowned European Champions, Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg, currently lying in fourth place, will line up in Jotun at this weekend’s Egyptian Grand Prix, looking to move up in the championship standings and to reduce their 19-point deficit in the World title race by taking their third consecutive win of the season. Following the drama that unfolded in the last race in Romania, just 21 points now separate the top five boats, and Championship leaders Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi will have to put the disappointment of losing out on the European title by one point behind them and try to restore Victory 1 to winning ways. The immediate challenge to their title lead comes from team-mates Al Mehairbi and Sanchez, currently lying in second spot and 10 points adrift, who have been a constant threat all season and will be hunting down a fifth podium finish, if not their first win of the year. Qatar 95’s impressive second place last time out, running the Sterling V8 power-plants for the first time, catapulted Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini into third place and crucially, ahead of their teammates, Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis in Qatar 96 who are in fifth place, to head the Qatar challenge for title honours. Foresti and Suardi’s Italian-Norwegian pairing, Giampaolo Montavoci and Kolbjorn Selmer, are proving to be one of the season’s most reliable outfits - taking five fifth place finishes and one sixth - and lead the race for middle-order supremacy, with Montavoci, a rough water specialist, hoping to spring a few surprises if they get a repeat of last year’s rough conditions. Spaniards, Domenico Cirilli and Sergio Carrasco will be aiming to step up their levels of performance, running their Mercury-Class 1 V8-powered Tencara, Spirit of Spain, for the first time with Class 1 newcomer Mohammed Abdelkader Ahmed making his competitive debut in the team’s second boat, Roscioli Hotels Roma, alongside Giovanni Carpitella, who makes a welcome return to Class 1 action. Following a frustrating few races, but a very solid sixth place in Romania, SeveneleveN’s Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi switch back to the Giorgi V12 engine package and is another team who will benefit in rough seas and will be confident of a strong points finish. After crashing out of the opening race of the season in Qatar, Chris Parsonage returns to front-line action in Negotiator for only his second start of the season. But with regular driver, 2005 World Champion Bard Eker, unavailable, Parsonage has drafted in the services of the experienced American throttleman Billy Moore, with Parsonage taking over the wheel. page 4 page 5 October 2008 n. 7 October 2008 n. 7 P orto Marina is more than a vacation and residential resort.
