Fall checklist for your 4
garden...
Summer has blown by
this year with unseasonable cool temperatures,
which was great for landscapes, trees and lawns.
Most of us were mowing
the lawns at least once if
not twice a week this season. Everything just kept
on growing!
As Fall approaches
please see the Fall
checklist for your garden to help your landscape over winter, and
remember Fall is a great
time to be planting trees
and shrubs. Please see
our article on Moving
Trees (big or small…we
plant them all!!)
Our 24th Annual
Family Day is planned
for Saturday, September 20, 2014, where we
pay your taxes on all
products purchased store
wide. Bring out the whole
family and enjoy a fun
day of games for the kids
and a charity BBQ! Our
hayrides, enjoyed by
adults and children alike,
are approximately one
hour in length, so please
plan your day accordingly.
At this time, we extend
a great thanks to our dedicated staff for a wonderful gardening season.
Oxford Insta-Shade:
Garden Center, Land-
scaping and Large Tree
Transplanting, are the
services we offer you! We
also continue to offer professional service and expert advice to you for your
gardens and properties
Once again, we hope to
see you at our 24th Annual Family Day. Feel
free to bring your family,
friends and neighbours
and we will give them a
discount equal to the taxes too on September
20th!
Kindly,

“How do I make my
hydrangeas bloom more?”
This is one of the most
frequently asked questions we hear in regards
to hydrangeas. The easy
answer to this question is
fertilizer, which increases
the amount of nutrients
available to the plant,
thus promoting root,
leaf, and flower growth
throughout the season.
However, pruning
is one of the
most important aspects
in caring for hydrangeas. Deadheading (different than pruning) can be done any time,
if the old blooms are removed directly behind the dead head.
There are two methods
of pruning, each
for different types
of hydrangeas.
Step 1: Determine
the type of hydrangea you are dealing
with. There are four main
groups: Mophead and
Lacecap, Oakleaf, Paniculata(‘PG’), and Annabelle.
If you are unsure which
group your hydrangea
belongs to, visit...

Acer Rubrum ‘Frank Jr.’ - Redpointe Maple, the tree of the year...
‘
The Acer Rubrum
‘Redpointe’ Maple tree is
fast becoming more popular
than traditional maple favourites. Its quick and relatively
care-free growth habits are as
endearing as is its spectacular
red fall color display. Upright
with a broadly pyramidal
shape that requires little
pruning.
The ‘Redpointe’ Maple
will reach 40 feet high with a
20 foot spread. Narrower
than many maples, it makes a
nice addition to more compact
landscapes.
It is a deciduous tree undeterred by cold snaps as it is a
hardy zone four. Its deeply
lobed leaves are deep green
from Spring to Fall when they
turn a brilliant red shade.
Oxford Insta-Shade has a
number of Acer rubrum
‘Redpointe’ Maple trees
available on Family Day,
Saturday, September 20th.
Come to Oxford InstaShade today and speak with
our knowledgeable staff to see

Step 2: If your
hydrangea is a
Mophead, Lacecap, or Oakleaf
variety, follow
Pruning Method
1. If you have a
Paniculata(‘PG’)
or Annabelle variety, follow Pruning
Method 2.
Method 1: Prune these hydrangeas only in the summer, but before
August. These hydrangeas bloom on
old wood, so
pruning in the
fall or winter
will result in
most of the
buds being
removed before the next
season.
There are a
few exceptions, like
the ‘Endless
Summer’ group and other everblooming varieties- these can be
pruned at any time.
Method 2: Annabelle hydrangeas
should not be pruned in the spring,
while ‘PG’ and ‘Limelight’ varieties
should not be pruned in the summer, when the
buds are
forming on
the shrubs.
These hydrangeas can be
pruned at any
other time,
although they
do not need to
be pruned every year.

Did you know?
Though conifers are evergreens, they
do lose leaves and needles. Because
needles’ life expectancy is two or three
years, every autumn, the oldest needles on the trunk and main branches
yellow and fall off. This healthy phenomenon is most visible on Pines. So
don’t let a few needles that fall in the
Fall needle you.
Fall checklist for your gar
den:
Before the first frost, spread
a layer of mulch around
trees and shrubs to protect
roots.
Winterize your Rose Bushe
s, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Yews, Alberta Spruce
, and Upright Junipers.
 Many perennials need to be cut
back 15-20cm.
 Feed your lawn with Fall Fertili
zer; the nutrients will
help protect the grass throug
hout the winter and
gives it a good boost for nex
t spring.
 Protect your less hardy plants
when winter sets in by
wrapping them in burlap. Bu
rlap available in-store.
 Pull out your annuals and put
them on the compost
pile. Get your garden ready
and plant your springflowering bulbs like tulips,
daffodils, hyacinths etc.
 To get some good fall colour, pla
nt some hardy mums
and icicle pansies. We have
plenty in stock and they
are in full bloom.

Rake up fallen leaves and add
