GARIÉPY, Les Jardins du centre Événements Harricana Page 2 UTHC Information Guide – Presented by The North Face Trail Running Competition Although the competition is open to all, we take it very seriously and, regardless of your fitness level, each participant will be considered as an experienced athlete. Timekeeping for all races will be ensured by Sportstats. IMPORTANT A minimum set of equipment is required in order to be allowed to participate in this event. It is to be noted that such equipment consists of the bare minimum based on the capacities of each runner. Furthermore, the UTHC is a race to be completed in semi-autonomy. Semi-autonomy is defined as being autonomous between two refreshment stations. It involves a satisfactory level of food, clothing and security so as to ensure that runners can adapt to any problem that may arise or that can be foreseen (bad weather, physical problems, injuries, etc.). All activities and events are at the ski resort mont Grand-Fonds, La Malbaie Friday 6 sept. 5pm to 8pm Race kit Pick-up 65K UTHC. MANDATORY is the only time to get your bib. Saturday 7 sept. 5am UTHC 65K Racer Check-in and shuttle bus. The start is MANDATORY from the ski resort. No runner can go on his own to start the race. The duration of the shuttle bus is 1:30, we recommend that you bring a snack for the road. UTHC 65K 65 km UTHC– 2000 m D+, duration 4 h 30 to 10 h 00, start at 7 h One of the longest races in semi-autonomy in Eastern Canada, the UTHC is a qualifying race for which you will be awarded one point toward all races of The North Face® UltraTrail du Mont-Blanc® and not only for the UTMB®. The race will get underway at the HAUTES-GORGES-DE-LA-RIVIÈRE-MALBAIE NATIONAL PARK and end at the Mont Grand-Fonds Ski Center. The course will take you halfway through the famous trail called La Traversée de Charlevoix. You will find topographic map for the UTHC 65K further below. Runners’ Code Semi-autonomy is a requirement. Événements Harricana Page 3 UTHC Information Guide – Presented by The North Face Make sure that you carry adequate equipment as this race takes place in the wild – whistle, bell, survival blanket, 1.5 liters of water, food, electrolytes, ibuprofens (Advil), map of the course, sunscreen, adequate clothing, anti-chafing cream. You are required to provide assistance to any runner in danger. Spirit of cooperation is a requirement. Smile and enjoy the scenery. General Rules Your race bib must be worn on the chest or stomach and be visible at all times. Always remain on the marked course. Trash must be disposed of at any of the refreshment stations or kept on you. Sticks are only allowed for the 28 km event. It is forbidden to use earphones, iPods, radios, mp3 players, etc. Animals are not allowed. Trail Markers At each kilometer, there will be a pink ribbon or a small flag showing the number of kilometers remaining (countdown). Furthermore, massage therapy treatments will be provided by Masseo. Four small outdoor showers will also be at the disposal of participants with propane-heated water (experimental). Chef Mario’s Menu – L’Auberge des 3 Canards **** The after-race meal is a courtesy of L’auberge des 3 canards, IGA Gravel, La Maison LeGrand, La Ferme Basque, La Ferme des Monts and Les jardins du centre. Fava bean soup (from Charlevoix) Duck gigolette, small fruit sauce (seasonal) Indian lentil stew Podium and Medal Ceremony (2 p.m.) Men’s and women’s categories are as follows: 12-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 and above. The three fastest runners from each category will receive an Harricana t-shirt (The North Face). The fastest man and woman in each event will receive a pair of Julbo sunglasses worth $250. Événements Harricana Page 6 UTHC Information Guide – Presented by The North Face Activities Surrounding the Competition The Harricana Ultra-Trail event features various activities that take place during the competition. THE RUNNING CLINIC’s PIRATE RACE, Saturday at 1p.m. The Pirate Race is organized by The Running Clinic exclusively for kids aged 12 and below. The race takes place on a 1-km loop and times will be recorded. Parents may participate in the race if they wish to encourage their children to rise to the challenge. Although there will be no medal awarded, winners will be invited on the podium. You can register your children to the race on the day of the event. Yoga Sessions, Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Marylou Ménard will share her passion for hatha yoga. You are required to bring your yoga mat along with a bottle of water. Reserve your spot at the registration tables or on the website. The Safari Condo Camping Zone Ski Mont Grand-Fonds and the city of La Malbaie will allow athletes to camp on the parking lot of the ski center. Needless to say, it is basic and no services will be provided. Chemical toilets will be at your disposal along with four outdoor showers (experimental) with hot water. The camping zone will be open as of Friday at 2 p.m. and the chalet of the ski center will be open from 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Access is free for participating athletes. However, visitors with RVs or trailers will have to disburse a $20 fee for access to the camping zone. DON’T FORGET! Athletes and visitors are required to reserve their camp site in advance as space is limited; first come, first served! The registration form to that end is available online at http://harricana.info/camping-reservation/. Dicom Express Conferences, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Dicom Express will also feature conferences by Dean Bergeron and Sébastien Roulier entitled respectively Osez oser! (Dare to dare!) and L’art de courir (The art of running). Harricana at Sea with Katabatik, Sunday, September 8 Katabatik Aventure has organized a kayaking tour for Sunday, September 8. You can make reservations by contacting Frédéric Patry. Make sure to mention that it is for the Harricana sea kayaking activity (1 800 453-4850 - fpatry@katabatik.com). There will be a fee charged for this activity. Événements Harricana Page 7 UTHC Information Guide – Presented by The North Face Photography Workshop – Mathieu Dupuis, Friday at 7 p.m. Authenticity, motion and vitality. Photography is all about ambience. Learn how to give life to your photographs by adding a touch of authenticity when you are outdoors, somewhere on a trip or enjoying the scenery of a landscape. This workshop will help you understand techniques that are not found in any mainstream photography manual. Mont Grand-Fonds Party Come and party with us at the ski chalet, free of charge, a courtesy of the Mont Grand-Fonds ski center. Trust us, you won’t get much sleep! Available Services and Additional Information A day care service will be provided free of charge solely for children of participating athletes and volunteers. Although there will be a short race with entertainment, we ask that you bring enough material to keep your kids entertained during the day. Sandwiches and healthy pizzas will be sold on location on Saturday at lunchtime (cash only). Four small outdoor showers with hot water will be at the disposal of athletes (experimental project beta 2.00). Technical t-shirts (The North Face) showing the XC Harricana wolf will be sold on location for $25 (cash only). Please note that there is no cellular phone service at the ski center. Make sure that you have cash on you for all on-site purchases. Where to Eat Your best dinner option on Saturday night is Café Chez-nous located in La Malbaie. A special menu has been prepared for Harricana runners. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time! The table d’hôte includes a soup, oyster mushroom ravioli, gluten-free sausages served with couscous and vegetables, dessert, coffee and a complimentary drink upon presentation of the promo card that you will find in the runners kit (1075 Richelieu Street, Pointe-au-Pic, (418) 6653080). You will receive a free biological, fair trade coffee upon presentation of the promo card that you will find in the runners kit (398 Saint-Étienne Street, La Malbaie, (418) 665-4000). Otherwise, make sure to bring enough food and water for Saturday and Sunday. Be patient, this is the most demanding leg of the UTHC 65 km event. It leads to refreshment station #2 (Coyote). 28th km to 41st km – Controlled harvesting zone (zec) – Lac au sable leg Difficulty level: Easy Trail conditions: This leg is split in two and is a wide and easy trail. The first 6 km are on a mountain bike and quad trail while the next 7 km are on a rideable gravel road used by shipping trucks on the zec. A Yaris could go through!! It leads to refreshment station #3 (Beaver). 41st km to 49th km – Orignac Trail leg Difficulty level: Very hard Trail conditions: Partly clear, muddy, single track. This leg may remind you of the first 20 km at the start of the race. Be careful, you’ll already be 40 km into it. This leg leads to refreshment station #4 (Split). 49th km to 56th km – Montagne noire leg Difficulty level: Hard and easy Trail conditions: Single track up the mountain (3 km) that opens onto a wide and pleasant lichen trail. The last part of this leg is a rideable road that spans 2 km. It leads to the last refreshment station (5th) of the UTHC 65 km event. This is a good sign. Événements Harricana Page 15 UTHC Information Guide – Presented by The North Face 56th km to 60th km – Lac à Tom leg Difficulty level: Easy Trail conditions: Wide trail but be careful, it is a descent. There is a 2-km trail followed by a 2-km rideable road. Be mindful of vehicles as you may be tired and much less focused. 60th km to 64th km – Mont Grand-Fonds leg Difficulty level: Easy Trail conditions: You will be on a ski trail on Mont Grand-Fonds. There are mudflats. The trail is clear and on grass. This is the final stretch with a few hills here and there. Don’t worry about it, you’ll be running down the Mont Grand-Fonds ski center toward the finish line. Événements Harricana Page 16
