2015 Benefits Update - Shawnee Mission Health
October 2014
Issue Number 10
2015 Benefits Update
At Shawnee Mission Health (SMH), wellness
is at the core of everything we do. SMH is
committed to paving the way to optimal
wellness by incorporating all aspects of
health including mind, body and spirit. To
fulfill that mission, we as associates must
lead by example. Our 2015 benefits package
and Associate Wellness program will help
us do that.
New this year, we are joining with other
Adventist Health System (AHS) hospitals
to partner with WebMD on our Associate
Wellness program. Using WebMD, you will
be able to track your wellness activities
through a personalized web portal. Your
activities will allow you to earn points which
can lead to a cash rebate on your health
insurance premiums.
You will receive more information on the
program in the coming months, including
dates for the biometric screenings and online
scheduling information. In the meantime,
if you’re interested in becoming a wellness
champion, contact Lisa Cummings, Wellness
Program Specialist, at 913-676-7590 or
lisa.cummings@shawneemission.org.
In the next week you will be receiving the
annual benefits enrollment packet from AHS.
This packet will contain important information
on how to enroll in your benefits for 2015 which
must be done online Nov. 1-30.
While we anticipate health care costs will
increase seven percent in 2015, we are pleased
to announce that slightly lower utilization of
our health plan this year has helped us keep
your increase in costs to a minimum. Most of
our associates will see a three to four percent
October Events
increase in their contribution with the majority
of the increase being absorbed by SMH. Again
this year, we will offer a tobacco-free discount
on your health insurance premium if you and
covered dependents have been tobacco free
for the last 12 months. You must complete
the attestation through the online annual
enrollment process.
Also new for 2015, we will transition from 24
pay period deductions for your benefit coverage
to deductions taken each pay period. This
doesn’t mean that you are paying more for
your benefits, rather each pay period deduction
will be lower because the contribution will
be spread out over additional pay periods.
Associate contribution premiums for all of the
benefit plans will be available at the Benefit
Fair and can also be found on the Arc Human
Resources page.
Mark your calendar for the annual Benefit Fair
on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. in the
Garden Café. This is your opportunity to talk
with representatives from each of the benefit
plans and ask questions. Human Resources
staff will be also be available through the month
of November to answer your benefit questions
and assist you with the online enrollment
process in the Medical Library. The schedule for
enrollment sessions in the Medical Library can
be found on Arc.
It is our goal to have the healthiest workforce in
Kansas City. By balancing an effective wellness
program with solid health benefits, we think we
can do that. Thank you for your commitment
to SMH as we continue to provide care that is
Much more than medicine.

2014 Outstanding Associates
The 12 Outstanding Associates selected for 2014 support
SMH’s vision and values by demonstrating respect, integrity,
service, excellence and stewardship.
They are dedicated to Improving Health Through Christian
Service. Nominations were submitted and voted on by
the Customer Service Recognition committee. The 2014
Outstanding Associates receive a monetary gift, an engraved
plaque, family photo package, dinner with Administration and
special recognition at the annual Associate Awards Banquet
in March 2015. Three SMH associates are also recognized as
Mission Award winners and will be featured in the February
2015 edition of Stethascoop.
Susan Ford,
Intensive Care Unit
Colleen Gaffney,
HNVU
Sherry Gower,
Patient Access
Always maintaining a smile and respect
for others, Susan has a calm demeanor
in the most stressful situations. She
is supportive of patients, families and
fellow associates. Susan has been
involved in several projects involving
resource management and is always
readily available to discuss how a change
in a product or workflow may impact the
delivery of care. Consistently available
for other associates, Susan always
steps up to resolve patient concerns.
One associate wrote, “Susan displays
our Christian mission with her gentle
demeanor and positive attitude.”
Colleen is truly a patient advocate
who works hard to make sure that
patient care is a team approach. She
recognizes the importance of everyone
involved when caring for patients.
Always displaying excellent nursing
care, Colleen is a well-respected
associate and is sought out as a
resource by other nurses and clinical
associates. One associate wrote,
“Colleen shows care and compassion
to her patients and helps them by
providing education, ensuring they
have what they need to succeed.”
Sherry is always first to step in and help
out when and where she is needed. She
is kind and goes the extra mile daily
to meet patients’ needs. Sherry calms
nervous patients with her soft-spoken
demeanor, while assuring them that
they are in good hands. One associate
wrote, “When asked to do something
new or in addition to her normal duties,
Sherry always does it with a positive
attitude and smile. She is a pure joy to
work with and have on our team.”
Spirit of Christmas
in Human Resources (HR) or Spiritual
Wellness and return it to the Spirit of
Christmas box in the Garden Café, HR
or Spiritual Wellness from Nov. 10-14.
SMMC Teams Up With
Harvesters
The Spirit of Christmas Adopt-A-Family
program lets your team make a family’s
Christmas dreams come true. Last year,
25 families had a brighter Christmas
because of your generosity. You can
help with a monetary gift, departmental
sponsorship or by recommending an
associate’s family who has a special
need at this time. Please pick up a form

Each department should designate one
person to be the liaison between the
adopted family and department. If you
have questions, contact Julie Jenks at
ext. 72022 or
julie.jenks@shawneemission.org.
SMMC is teaming up with Harvesters
to sponsor a food drive from Nov. 1-30.
Donations can be placed in barrels
set up in the Garden Café and will
help Harvesters feed those in need
throughout Kansas City.
Many people think of hunger in
terms of terrible tragedies like famine
and mass starvation, but not as a
problem that affects people in Kansas
City on a daily basis. Hunger in our
community is often more subtle. It’s
a child who stuffs his pockets during
lunch at school so he has food to eat
at home in the evening. It’s a parent
who is overweight because sugar and
carbohydrate-laden foods are often
the least expensive at the store. It’s
a senior citizen who goes without
food in order to buy medicine, further
jeopardizing his already fragile health.
Harvesters’ agencies provide
assistance to nearly 60,000 people
every week, and half are children and
the elderly. A contribution during
November brings help and hope to
those in need. When you are grocery
shopping, remember to grab a few
items to show your support. Your
generosity makes a big difference.
Most needed food items include:
• Canned vegetables
• Canned fruit
• Canned meats/tuna
• Peanut butter and jelly
• Canned soup
• Hot and cold cereal
• Boxed meals (Hamburger Helper,
Pasta Roni).
No glass please!
Tiny Tim Volunteers
Needed
Tiny Tim Holiday Fantasy is quickly
approaching and organizers are
beginning to arrange for volunteers.
Volunteers are needed on the day of
the event, Nov. 2, at the Overland
Park Convention Center, 8 a.m.-noon
and 4-10 p.m. If you are interested in
volunteering, please contact
Julie Jenks at ext. 72022 or
julie.jenks@shawneemission.org.
Proceeds will go toward scholarships for
the Lee Ann Britain Infant Development
Center and to SMMC’s NICU.
Mandatory Flu
Vaccinations
It’s time for annual flu vaccines. Flu
shots are mandatory and free for
associates, volunteers, Medical Staff
and contract personnel. Flu vaccinations
must be completed by Nov. 30.
Remember to wear short sleeves.
Due to our heavy schedule during
flu season, the Employee Health
(EH) office cannot accommodate
walk-ins. Please attend the last clinic
on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 7 a.m.-4
p.m., near the Benefits Fair, or obtain
the vaccine in your department
if available. If you receive the flu
vaccination elsewhere, please submit
documentation to EH as soon as
possible to be considered compliant.
2014 SAQ Survey
another facility between Nov. 1, 2013
and Oct. 31, 2014 can enter to win
prizes. Four prizes will be awarded
this year including three gift bags
and a Garmin Vivofit fitness band
as the grand prize. Schedule your

My mother was brought into the

fortunate to have Jay as her nurse.
He made my mother as comfortable
as possible even though she was in
severe pain. Jay was very informative
and took care of all our needs. It
makes me proud to see a fellow
associate perform so well. Jay made
our day much less stressful.
