FOR CROSSVILLE
& CUMBERLAND
COUNTY
MESSAGE from OUR chair
As incoming chair for the Chamber it is my honor to acknowledge the leadership
contributions made by Mr. Frank Shipley to the Chamber and community. We thank
Frank as well as all the volunteers of the Chamber for helping the Chamber stay strong
during difficult economic times.
The Chamber will continue to be strong, creating opportunities for business
members to have a voice in the economic growth in our community. As the primary
advocacy organization for business in Cumberland County, we are working to promote
a healthy and vibrant economy while protecting and advancing the interest of our
members and the community as a whole.
There are many committees that are the driving force behind the strength of the
Chamber. Our committees are an important part of the organization and we encourage
you to get involved in order to make Crossville and Cumberland County the “must come to” area for visiting, living, working
and spending money.

Chamber Host Travel Writers
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development contracted with
Geiger and Associates to bring the best travel writers from across the
United States to the Upper Cumberland region. Travel writers were last
hosted in Crossville in 2008 which proved to have an immense impact
on the area through national publications.
Four travel writer groups were hosted in the Upper Cumberland
region focusing on: the general Upper Cumberland area attractions; the
State Parks in the area; the HOG rally in Cookeville and golf in Crossville.
The Crossville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce attended
several meetings with representatives from Tourist Development as well
as Geiger and Associates when the initial itineraries were first being
developed. Once the itineraries were official in position for the travel
writers, the Chamber of Commerce was instrumental in making the
arrangements for the golf travel group. The travel writers arrived in
Crossville on June 3rd for 4 days; playing 36 holes of golf each day.
Seated left to right: Ashley Allen, Chamber of Commerce; Eric Eckard,
Geiger and Associates; Jan Crye, journalist from Baltimore, MD.
Standing left to right: Bill Harper, journalist from Tulsa, OK; John Price,
journalist from Houma, LA and Don Alexander, Chamber representative.
Special thanks to the individuals at Bear Trace at Cumberland
Mountain; Lake Tansi golf course; Deer Creek golf course, Stonehenge
golf course, Heatherhurst Brae and Heatherhurst Crag golf course for accommodating the travel writers. Stonehaus Winery hosted
all the travel writers for the hors d'oeuvres, tasting and a tour on the last evening of the trip. The first article from the travel writers
was published in Golf Oklahoma - August/September issue! Thanks to Bill Harper for an outstanding article on golf in Cumberland
County. We are looking forward to more great articles.

Presenting Leadership
Cumberland Class of 2012
Leadership Cumberland
Rises Up to help the
Phoenix School again
Members of Leadership Cumberland Class of 2012
Leadership Cumberland Class of 2012 was on
the agenda at the 51st Annual Membership Meeting.
Each individual received a plaque from Frank Shipley,
Outgoing Chamber Board Chair and Janice Hamby, Vice
Chair of Community Development. Vicki Baucum, class
spokesperson addressed those in attendance on the
importance of the program and benefits of participating.
Approximately
every
six years the Chamber has
recognized an individual
in our community who has
contributed to the overall
quality-of-life for our residents.
His participation in the
growth of the community
through industrial projects
has tremendously impacted
our local economy. State
officials involved in recruitment as well as expansions
have applauded his attitude and enthusiasm and it has
resonated across the state. He stated publicly as a project
was presented for approval that, “it is not the best thing for
Monticello Canning, however it is good for the community
so I will support this project in anyway possible.”
Frank Shipley presented an award to a true statesman,
a man who is known to be a wise, skillful and respected
political leader - Mr. Earl Dean.
Left to Right – Members of Leadership Cumberland 2012 presenting
Breanna VanWinkle, The Phoenix School with the check.
The 2012 class of Leadership Cumberland chose
the Phoenix School for their class project. Leadership
Cumberland had two aims, first to help improve the public
perception of the Phoenix School and second to give
the current graduates their first Class Night. Class Night
was a success, Leadership Cumberland class members
hosted a cook-out prior to Class Night providing dinner for
graduates and their families and held an Open House for
the Phoenix School following the Class Night ceremony.
But, it didn’t stop there.
At the 51st Annual Membership Meeting, members of
Leadership Cumberland presented Breanna VanWinkle
of the Phoenix School a check for $2,000.00 for the
construction of a storage building. The building will be
located on the school site to hold items which are given
to the school for a variety of the student needs. Class
members obtained funds from the community.
Leadership Cumberland Class of 2012 still is working
hard to make a lasting impact on the students, the
Phoenix School and the Cumberland County Community
by continuing to champion the hard work and dedication
of the Phoenix School staff and students.

2012 Guide to the Best Places to Retire
RPI Media has published the 2012 Guide – Best Places to Retire. This guide hasn’t been in printed for 12 years and will
be marketing for the 2012-2013 Ideal Living expo season. The Crossville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce has an
advertisement in the issue.

Situated on the Cumberland Plateau in the center of the state, the landscape near Crossville is dominated by dramatic sandstone
bluffs and pine and oak forests. That leaves plenty to do for retirees who love the outdoors, say residents. The 1720-acre Cumberland Mountain State Park attracts thousands of hikers each year, while the Obed River and nearby Daddy and Clear Creeks offer
canoeing and kayaking. For the more competitive retiree, the town hosts an annual Senior Olympics, including events like pickleball,
tennis and horseshoes.
But for many retirees, the real allure of Crossville is golf. Known as the "Golf Capital of Tennessee," the area boasts 10 championship golf courses -- quite a lot for a town of just over 11,000. Two of the top 10 courses in the state, as named by GolfWeek,
are nearby: Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain State Park is Tennessee's first Jack Nicklaus-designed course and Stonehenge at
Fairfield Glade offers a 6,549 yard, par-72 course. Summer temperatures average just 73 degrees, meaning you won't get those
sweltering July and August days that keep golfers off the course further south.
Crossville has dozens of volunteer organizations, as well as a local Playhouse to keep retirees busy, rain or shine, says Beth
Alexander, CEO and President of the area Chamber of Commerce. Sixty-six-year-old retiree Linda Daugherty, who moved to town
18 years ago from Dayton, Ohio, with her ex-military husband, Charles, got involved with Farm Bureau Women, a local organization
that educates people about agriculture. The town, she says, has become like "family."
Fairway Living
RPI Media published the Ideal Living Annual Guide for Fairway Living, a directory of preferred communities. Fairfield Glade was
one of only two featured communities in Tennessee. The article features Stonehenge and Heatherhurst golf course as well as area
amenities.

One half of sales tax collected inside the city limits of Crossville, Crab Orchard, and Pleasant Hill is designated by State of Tennessee law
to be allocated to the local school systems(s). In Cumberland County, with only one school system, it gets all of the allocation. Outside of
the three cities, Cumberland County has designated about 90% of the sales tax to the school district and one half (the sales tax increase
of 1999) to debt retirement on new school classroom construction. The remaining portion of the county share of asles tax is about 10%.
It goes to the county general fund.
