NG YAW HUA
Organising Chairman
29th Installation Dinner
Greetings to my fellow Rotarians & dear Guests
attending the 29th Rotary Club of Kuching Central
Installation dinner. Our warmest welcome and
sincere thanks for your presence. I am very pleased
to note that we have more than 80 District 3310
Officers and Rotarians from 21 clubs together
with some of their spouses that travelled from
outside of Kuching to be with us. The presence of
the ever supportive members from the other three
Kuching Rotary Clubs and our Rotaractors and
Interactors is also much appreciated. I would also
like to recognize the continuing great rapport we
have always received from our sister clubs, namely
RC Queenstown, RC Taipei Golden Eagle and RC
Bandar Seri Begawan.
Club installations are well established affairs which
introduces the slate of incoming officers that will
run the Rotary Club for the next 12 months. It is a
time honored tradition and provides an avenue for
fellowship for Rotarians far & near. Regardless of
locations, we will find that Rotarians all over the world
have almost the same DNA make up. All will welcome their
out of town fellow Rotarians with open arms. To our visiting
Rotarians, please take advantage of our famous Kuching
hospitality and explore our quaint little city through the eyes of a local
during your stay here. To our local Rotarians, an opportunity to share
with our guests and appreciate the lifestyle we are enjoying here.
RC Kuching Central has been blessed with a vibrant Club whose members are
ever willing to assist each other in the Club’s endeavors. It has been a breeze to
organize Club events and this Installation is no exception. Numerous hands were on
the till to ensure its smooth running with special mention for Papa Abel Chieng (one of
our oldest Chartered members) and Ben Lo (our youngest member). This epitomizes the
culture of our Club where neither age, membership longevity, Rotary experiences nor much
else stand in the way of carrying out the task at hand. Kudos to incoming President Louis Yong
who had been very active in soliciting advertisement revenue to build up a respectable pool of Club
funds to implement service projects in the forth coming year. My utmost gratitude for all the assistance
my Organizing Committee members had provided during the course of organizing this event. And I am
confident that all our members will continue our tradition of being exemplarily hosts before, during and
after this Installation.
YANG AMAT BERHORMAT
TAN SRI DATUK AMAR (DR) HAJI ADENAN BIN HAJI SATEM
My gracious thanks to District 3310 Governor 2014-2015 Hj Andre Suharto for accepting our invitation
to be the Guest of Honor. He has brought numerous accolades to our Club and we are sure that there will
be many more during his term as he Lights Up Rotary as the first District Governor from our Club.

Message
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to write
this message in conjunction with the installation
ceremony of the 29th club president Louis Yong, his
board of directors and club officers for the Rotary
year 2014-15.
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
One of Rotary’s distinctive characteristics is that,
with the exception of Rotary International directors
who serve two years terms, and the Rotary
Foundation trustees with four-year terms, the entire
leadership in the organization changes every 1 July.
This annual change demands that Rotary have a
continual supply of good leaders to keep the wheel
rolling.
This is the club which I have been a member since
its birth in 1986. I have seen the progress of how
this club has grown from strength to strength in
terms of membership size and fellowships.
ANDRE SUHARTO
Guest of Honor
District Governor 2014 - 2015
RI District 3310
The club members have been united and supportive
of the club president every year. Everyone has
been forthcoming and willing to help. This is the
uniqueness of the club members which could have
been the result of good fellowship among them.
The Rotary Club of Kuching Central has the
experience of how a signature project in Preventive
Blindness can ‘wake up’ the sleeping ‘giant’ and
unlock the potential inside a member.
Being one of the strongest clubs in Sarawak, I would like
to encourage incoming club president Louis Yong to take
advantage of the good foundation that has been laid down by
outgoing president Patrick Luk to expand the portfolio of signature
projects. Signature projects can eventually be a trade mark of the club
and if the projects have great positive impact on the community, it can
create ‘pull’ factor in increasing membership.
Rotarians are a special kind of people who pay to serve by donating their time,
financial and other resources. Rotarians are action oriented people, who will light a
candle rather than to sit and complain about the darkness. That’s why Rotary clubs and
Rotarians provide help to those in need regardless of their race, creed, religion, language
and political beliefs. Therefore it is vital that projects are not implemented only in one
community, but in as many and varied communities as possible. This will demonstrate that we
mean what we say.
It is nobler to give than to take. The thrill of taking lasts a day. The thrill of giving lasts a lifetime. It’s
easier to take than to give. As we work to brighten the lives of others, we naturally light our own path
through life.
May this new Rotary year bring fulfilment in the life of each Rotarian in this club as we ‘Light Up Rotary’
to rekindle the hope in us to serve those who are in need.
Join me to ‘Light Up Rotary’,
CHEW GHIM BOK
District Governor 2013 - 2014
RI District 3310
So, each year on the first of July, Rotary Clubs
throughout the world induct a new President and
Board of Directors to take over the helm of the club
for another year. Some Clubs do so in grand fashion
others have a quiet ceremony. Whatever, it is a sign
or renewal of leadership, the old giving way to the
new.
Some retiring officers breathe a sigh of relief; glad that
it is all over. Others would celebrate a job well done.
While I pen this simple message I am certain that Outgoing
President Patrick and his Board of Directors had done an
outstanding job and leave the incoming officers a target to bring the
club to the next level. Rotary Club of Kuching Central has strong tradition
and high standard. The job of the President becomes more and more
challenging each year.
Rotary is an organization made up of successful individuals and captains of
industry. The most difficult job for every Club President is to lead a group of
volunteers who are also leaders in their own right. Unlike a boss or employer you
do not have any power, but the power of gentle persuasion to get the job done. None of
your members owe you a living. In this regard I commend everyone past, present and future
who are willing to take on this challenge.
In spite of all that many Rotary Clubs, year after year, find meaningful projects in the service of the
community. It is this devotion to service to the needy that drives us forward towards a better world.
I urged all of you to be more than just a member of a Rotary Club. We must all strive to be Rotarians. There
is a great deal of difference between the two.
A true Rotarian is more than just a member of a club. He or she is fully committed to Rotary’s ideals of
Service Above Self. He or she will go the extra mile to make a difference.
My congratulations to Incoming President Louis Yong and his Board, wishing you all a great Rotary Year
ahead!
As we Light Up Rotary, let’s continue to Engage Rotary, Change More Lives.

Looking at the list of our distinguished fellow Past
Presidents who have preceded me, it is indeed a great
honour and privilege to be the 29th President of The
Rotary Club of Kuching Central for the term 2014-2015
under the Rotary Theme “Light up Rotary”.
Club Officers in District 3310
Dear fellow Rotarians,
I am happy to congratulate you on your
installation to the office of 2014–15 club
officers.
Your office is important not just for the tasks
you perform, but for the leadership you provide.
As an officer in your club, you serve as an
example-of motivation, engagement, and
service.

LOUIS YONG LIN LIN
President 2014 - 2015
RI District 3310
Rotary’s global leadership may help set priorities
and chart a course, but it is you, at the club level, who
hold Rotary’s future in your hands. It is at the club level
that we succeed or fail, because it is at the club level that
members become excited about service, and pull together to
make change.
No one knows your members, or your community, better than you do
yourself, and you have the opportunity to harness that knowledge and your
leadership role to generate enthusiasm for Rotary’s mission. In Rotary we find
solutions, not excuses. Committed members make a strong club, and strong clubs
make Rotary shine.
Each Rotary year is a new beginning, a new chance to strive for greatness. I wish you every
success in your new role, as we work together to Light Up Rotary.
Sincerely,
This Rotary term 2014-2015 is also very special to our
club as we are greatly honoured to have one of our own
chartered members, Past President Andre Suharto as
our District 3310 District Governor covering the regions
of Singapore, the southern part of Semenanjung
Malaysia (Johore and Malacca), Sabah, Sarawak,
Labuan, Federal Territory and Brunei. I verily believe
that all the members of our club are very honoured,
proud and excited that our Rotary District 3310 is led by
one of our own club members.
I would like to congratulate Immediate Past President
Patrick Luk and his outgoing team for an outstanding
Rotary year under his leadership, having won many
district awards. He has indeed set a high standard for
me and my incoming BOD. My team and I will have to work
extremely hard to match and hope to surpass the standard
set. The tradition that really makes our club unique is that all
our Past Presidents, members and their immediate families are
always enthusiastically prepared to render their invaluable assistance
and give constructive advice and strong moral support to the Incoming
President and his team. I am very confident that with their vast experience
and charitable thoughts in Rotary and through projects implementation, our
club is going to have another successful and memorable year ahead.
Our world today, from the macro point of view, is filled with many uncertainties, such
as global warming, natural disasters, hunger and sickness, wars. Whereas from the
domestic point of view many regions in our backyards lack basic amenities such as clean
water provision, proper sanitation and power supply. Many rural areas are also faced with
dilapidated school facilities, unaccessibility to proper health and medical care, just to name a few.
This year’s Rotary Theme under our Rotary International Director Gary Huang is “LIGHT UP ROTARY”.
He has enlightened that “Instead of complaining, why not we change” that is to say if each Rotarian is
to light up a candle, 1.2 million candles would have made our world a brighter place (to live in).
Let us begin this Rotary year with a “LIGHT UP ROTARY” heart and let us contribute our sincere best to
help the less fortunate, the needy and the underprivileged in our societies, through implementation of
more community projects, such as our signature project “Cataract Operation”, implementation of Solar
Lighting system and Water Filtration system, the laying of pipes and the donation of books to improve their
quality and way of life.
Let’s join me and my loving spouse Mimi by continuing to
Engage Rotary, Change Life AND let us “LIGHT UP ROTARY”.

Introduction to Rotary International
2014-15 Theme - ‘Light Up Rotary’
Rotary International formed in 1905 is an organization of service
clubs known as Rotary Clubs located all over the world. It is a
secular organization open to all persons regardless of race,
religion, colour, creed, gender or political preference.
The purpose of the organization is to bring together business
and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service,
encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help to
build goodwill and peace in the world. Members usually meet
weekly, which is a social event as well as an opportunity to
organize work on their service goals.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
The Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in
particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful
occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship
of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Avenues of Service
For years, Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the Avenues of Service,
which form the foundation of club activity.
- Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.
- Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high
ethical standards. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects
related to this avenue, offering opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in
service projects.
- Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
- International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around
the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. Rotarians can support International Service
by sponsoring a project in another country, seeking international project partners to support projects in
their own communities, or by personally volunteering at an international project site. Visit the ProjectLINK
database to post a project in need of assistance, find projects to support, or learn about successfully
completed projects to replicate.
- New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults
through leadership development activities such as RYLA, Rotaract and Interact, service projects, and
creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange.
THE 4-WAY TEST
• Is it the TRUTH?
• Is it FAIR to all concerned?
12
29th Installation Dinner
For Rotary Year 2014-2015
The test, which has been translated into more than 100
languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we
think, say or do
• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Core Essence
A worldwide network of inspired individuals
who translate their passions into relevant social
causes to change lives in communities.
Mission
We provide service to others, promote integrity,
and advance world understanding, goodwill,
and peace through our fellowship of business,
professional, and community leaders.
Vision
The vision of Rotary International is to be the
service organization of choice with dynamic,
action-oriented clubs whose contributions
improve lives in communities worldwide.
RI Strategic Plan
• Support and strengthen clubs
• Focus and increase humanitarian service
• Enhance public image and awareness
Core Values
Rotary International’s core values are service,
fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.
Diversity and Rotary
Rotary International recognizes the value
of diversity within individual clubs. Rotary
encourages clubs to assess those in their
communities who are eligible for membership,
under existing membership guidelines, and to
endeavor to include the appropriate range of
individuals in their clubs. A club that reflects
its community with regard to professional and
business classification, gender, age, religion,
and ethnicity is a club with the key to its future.
STATUS REPORT:
99% POLIO-FREE
The greatest example of Rotarys
effective collaborations is it flagship
programme, Polio Plus, where aims to
eradicate polio worldwide. Workding
with spearheading partness UNICEF, the US Centers
of Disease Control & Prevention, and WHO, Rotary
has contributed over US$600 million and countless
volunteer hours to help immunize more than two
billion children against the clipping and often fatal
disease.
Bills & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded
Rotary USD355 million to support its effort to
eradicate polio. In respond, Rotary has committed
to rase USD200 million by 30th June 2012. This
target has been met. Through the work of the Global
FAMILY OF ROTARY
At a Glance
The family of Rotary extends beyond individual
Rotarians and Rotary clubs to include other serviceminded people who help with the organization’s
work. Groups such as Rotaract, Interact, and Rotary
Community Corps serve side by side with sponsor
clubs, using their diverse skills to improve the quality
of life in their communities. Below are some of the
latest statistics available.

Rotary & United Nations
Rotary and United Nations have a long history of
working together and sharing similar visions for a
more peaceful world.
In 1942, clubs from 21 nations organized a
conference in London to develop a vision for
advancing education, science and culture after World
War II. That event was a precursor to UNESCO. In
1945, 49 Rotarians went to San Francisco to help
draft the UN Charter. Rotary and UN have been close
partners ever since, a relationship thats apparent
through Polio Plus and work with UN agencies.
Polio Eradication Initiative more than 5 million people, who
would have been otherwise paralyzed, are walking because
they have been immunized against polio, and more than
500,000 cases of polio are prevented each year due to
the efforts of governments and the GPEI partnership.
Transmission of the poliovirus has been stopped in all but
four countries - Afghanistan, india, Nigeria and Pakistan
- and the virus is being contained within increasingly
smaller geographical areas within those countries.
Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985, but the
fight isn’t over. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal
infectious disease, and for as little as US$0.60, a child can
be protected against the virus for life. If we don’t finish the
fight right now, more than 10 million children under the
age of five could be paralyzed by polio in the next 40 years.

ASSISTANT GOVERNORS
Assistant Governors are district appointees selected by the incoming Governor. They are not
officers of Rotary International. Assistant Governors are to be appointed on an annual basis, with
no Assistant Governors serving more than three one-year terms.
Assistant Governors must be Past President of Clubs in the District, willing and able to accept
the responsibilities of Assistant Governors. They must have successfully served at the district
level, and have potentials as future Governors of District.
Responsibilities
The assistant governor has responsibilities to both the district governor and the club.
District-level responsibilities include:
• Assisting in developing district goals
• Coordinating the DG’s official visit with clubs
• Communicating clubs’ strengths, weaknesses, and progress toward goals to the governor
• Attending district meetings
• Participating in Rotary Foundation programs, events, and fundraising
• Helping develop future district leaders
• Briefing the incoming assistant governor on the status of clubs

Through the generosity of people like you, Rotary funds sustainable projects that help communities throughout
the world address their greatest challenges. Rotary projects yield both immediate and long-term benefits, while
multiplying the impact of each gift, strengthening communities, and building world understanding and peace.
Rotary supports projects in six areas of focus:
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Maternal and child health
Disease prevention and treatment
Basic education and literacy
Water and sanitation
Economic and community development
Rotary’s top priority remains the eradication of polio. Through PolioPlus, Rotary is a leading partner in the Global
Polio Eradication Initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, and more recently the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary has helped immunize
more than 2.5 billion children, mobilized public support, and contributed over US$1 billion in the effort. Polio
cases have dropped 99 percent since 1988 when the GPEI began.
