Record order
intake for Mazak UK
Yamazaki Mazak is reporting
a record order intake in
2015 driven by strong
growth across all machine types,
specifically in horizontal machining
centres, Integrex models and
the company’s UK-built five-axis
machines, such as Variaxis.
Although Mazak UK confirmed
that machine orders from the
oil and gas sector had dipped,
strong growth in aerospace and
automotive had helped to offset
this factor.
“What is particularly
pleasing is the continued robust
performance of sales into the
general subcontracting market,
in which we’ve picked up a lot of
new customers taking their first
steps into CNC machining with
our entry-level machines, such as
the Vertical Centre Smart and the
Quick Turn Smart,” says Richard
Smith, managing director UK &
Ireland sales division, who also
confirmed that 2015 had proven
a record year for sales of Mazak
laser profiling machines in the UK.

XYZ to open larger facility
XYZ Machine Tools will officially open its
newly constructed Nuneaton technical centre
on 9-10 March. The 6000 ft2 facility is double
the size of the company’s previous Nuneaton
showroom, allowing XYZ to expand the support
provided to customers in terms of product training
and demonstrations. Furthermore, a new conference
room will be available to selected partners, free of
charge, with visitors able to view machines during
breakout sessions. The two-day event will be open
to all between 09:00 and 15:00 on both days.

Trumpf announces March
open house event
Trumpf will open the doors
to its Luton facility in March
when, for the first time in
the UK, the company will be
showcasing the TruLaser 5030
Fiber with TruDisk 8001 – the first
2D laser machine to provide 8
kW of laser power. The result, is
high productivity across the entire
sheet thickness spectrum and,
notably, the ability to cut stainless
steel up to 40 mm (pictured);

The Institute for Engineering
Computer Science (INF)
at the NTB Interstate
University of Applied Sciences
in Switzerland, has announced
a new website, gtc-tools.com,
which provides information to
the public on the GTC (generic
tool catalogue) cutting tool data
exchange format. The GTC data
exchange format was developed
through collaboration among
machining hardware and software
specialists, Siemens PLM
Software, Sandvik Coromant,
Iscar and Kennametal. It is
available to all tool vendors and
application developers, enabling
them to share cutting tool data
more easily and precisely. GTC
enhances the data exchange
format, ISO 13399.

2016
WIN Eurasia Metalworking
2016 is set to take place
on 11-14 February at the
Tüyap Convention and Congress
Centre in Istanbul, Turkey.
The exhibition is expected to
perform as well as last year,

the Gulf states. Covering an
area of around 17,000 sq m,

Apprenticeship
scheme reinstated
at Bystronic UK
Three apprentices have
been taken on by Coventrybased sheet metalworking
machinery supplier, Bystronic UK,
marking the first intake since the
1990s. The subsidiary is following
in the footsteps of its Swiss parent
company, which employs more
than 100 apprentices worldwide.
Two of the Coventry trainees
joined in the second half of 2015,
engineering apprentice Joshua
Smith and apprentice administrator
Liz Hughes. Engineering
apprentice Lewis Wale has been
with the firm since August 2013
and has just embarked on an HNC
course in electrical engineering
and electronics on day-release at
North Warwickshire & Hinckley
College.

Support for MTC Acubore trials
Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence UK is
giving a helping hand to the next generation of
engineers by supplying a range of equipment
to help establish a dedicated metrology room at
the MTC’s Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing
Training Centre in Coventry. The metrology room
equipment not only includes a Global Performance

The first production trials on Mollart
Engineering’s development of the seven-axis,
£550,000 Acubore deep-hole drilling centre at
its Chessington subcontract facility has proven the
company’s ability in creating a drill direction factor
to maintain the straightness of a 63.5 mm diameter
bore in an oil industry component while also
demonstrating cycle time savings of 2.5 hours. This
operational saving, against a previous 4-hour drilling
cycle on the Super Duplex workpiece material, has
been achieved largely thanks to a combination of
the available power and rigidity of build.

Techno Group extends
turn-milling capability
The “Miyano fleet” is an
affectionate term created
by the Techno Group’s two
subcontract production centres
where 16 Miyano fixed head turnmill centres are installed. The
machines are playing a significant
role in enabling the company to
generate business from producing
components for various aerospace
tier one customers.
The Techno Group comprises
two companies: Technoset and
the group headquarters based
in Rugby; and Technoturn in St
Leonards-on-Sea. High on the
Techno Group’s priority list to
support new opportunities and
provide additional capacity last
year were orders placed on Citizen
Machinery UK for four Miyano fixed
head turn-mill centres. Two BNJ42SY5 machines were delivered
to Rugby early in 2015 followed by
an ABX-64SYY2 twin-spindle, twinturret machine that was delivered
in June to Technoset. This
installation was quickly followed by
an immediate order for a second
ABX, but this time the three-turret
version, ABX-64TH5, for installation
at the Technoturn facility.
Gateshead-based Crabtree
specialises in the design
and manufacture of metal
decoration presses, or in layman’s
terms, printing presses for metal
objects such as food containers
and chocolate tins.
In addition to manufacturing
complete multi-million pound
systems, Crabtree also has a
strong spares market for the many
hundreds of machines it has sold
over the years. These spares,
along with the majority of parts for
new build machines, are produced
in-house.
Part of the investment process
sees older machine tools being
replaced, and a case in point is
the recent arrival of an XYZ SLX
555 ProTurn lathe with 3 m bed.
This machine is being used to
take up machining capacity left
when Crabtree disposed of a 20
year-old turning centre, which cost
£500,000 when new.
“We recognised that the turning
centre wasn’t being used to its full
capacity and it needed highly skilled
people to program and operate, so
we looked around for an alternative
that could provide straightforward
turning capability for handling the
variety of components that we

components produced on the
Miyanos can have cycle times

Indeed, customer demands
on the group, as it has moved
into higher end machining, are
constantly increasing.
“We are forever intensifying
our focus on quality rather than
out-and-out cycle times,” says
operations director John Stretton.
“Mirror finishes and fully controlled
deburring with no marks or
scratches when parts leave the
machine are now the order of the
day, while tolerances of 0.025
mm, 0.02 mm and some as tight
as 12 µm, are becoming almost
commonplace.”

priced at £55,000 could replace
the expensive machine we had,
but from day one the XYZ has
performed perfectly, achieving the

Jet has developed its range
of Elite lathes which are now
available in the UK from
Axminster Tools & Machinery.
Designed to operate in challenging
machine shop environments, the
two models in the range, the Jet
Elite E-1236VS and E-1440VS,
have many features in common,
including: certified Meehanite
castings; ISO 492 Class 4 spindle
bearings that keep spindle runout to 0.011 mm; hardened and
ground gears in the headstock; a
two-speed gearbox plus inverter
drive; an LED spindle speed
readout; and a full cabinet stand
with locking tool cupboard, coolant/
chip guarding and CNC style
lighting.
The E-1440VS lathe is the
largest model and big enough for
almost any workshop task, says
Axminster. The inverter drive
system powers the spindle through
a two-speed gearbox, giving
speeds on low of 30-365 rpm, and
on high of 165-2200 rpm.
The E-1236VS lathe, which is
the smaller model, again features
an inverter drive system and twospeed gearbox, giving speeds on
low of 40-365 rpm, and on high of
165-2000 rpm.
According to Axminster,
both models bring a standard of
accuracy normally only found in
much larger lathes. Each has a
150 mm three-jaw chuck mounted
in the D-14 spindle, which itself
has a 5MT taper and a 38 mm
bore. Other standard features
A new CNC turn-mill centre
called Quattro B436Y2, with
two Y-axis tool turrets and
two opposed C-axis spindles, has
been introduced by the Italian firm,
Biglia, which is represented in the
UK and Ireland by Whitehouse
Machine Tools. Quattro lathes
have been produced since
1990 and are now in their third
generation.
The machine exhibits vibration
damping and thermal stability
due to robust construction of the
45° cast iron bed, linear rails,
12-station turrets with live tools
(4.6 kW/22 Nm/6000 rpm) and 11
kW/7000 rpm motor spindles.
The CNC counter-spindle has
two degrees of freedom (in the Z
and X axes), allowing it to be offset
by 170 mm from the centreline
of the main spindle, eliminating
interference between the turrets
when simultaneously machining
at both spindles. It also allows an
unusual arrangement whereby
a tailstock can be advanced into
the space vacated by the offset
counter-spindle to enable turnmilling between centres using the
main spindle and simultaneous
reverse-end machining by the
counter-spindle and second turret.

Turn-mill centres
prove key to growth
Investment in two NakamuraTome mill turn centres by
subcontract component

Engineering has positioned the
company for its next stage of
growth by enhancing its single hit
machining capability.
The Huddersfield-based
company has acquired a 71 mm
bar capacity Nakamura WY-250
twin-turret, twin-spindle turn-mill
and a Nakumura NTJ 100 turn-mill
centre with 52 mm bar capacity.
Both machines have been supplied
by the Engineering Technology
Group.
“The one thing we have
learnt is that you cannot stand
still in this business and we
have a strong track record of
investment in machine tools,
property and people,” explains
managing director, Tom Brown.
“In subcontracting you never
know what’s around the corner
and as such, we have invested
in machines that are hopefully
‘futureproof’ and give us a
response in every eventuality.
The Traub TNL32-11 is a
new addition to the German
manufacturer's automatic
lathe series, which is capable of
sliding head and fixed head turning
and milling. Availability in the UK
and Ireland is through sole agent,
Geo Kingsbury.
The key feature of the machine
is a two-axis reverse end-working
attachment mounted below the
main spindle that increases the
number of CNC axes to 11,
allowing simultaneous machining
with three fully independent
tools. Savings in cycle times are
possible, especially when producing
components with a high proportion
of drilling, says the company.
Like the TNL32-9, the TNL3211 is a 32 mm bar lathe with a
headstock moving in the Z-axis,
an upper and identical lower turret
with X, Y, and Z axes, an additional
100° B-axis on the upper turret,
and a counter-spindle that travels
in X and Z.
The reverse end-working
attachment sits on an additional
cross slide moving in the X and Z
axes, and makes eight additional
tool stations available, four of
which are for fixed tools while the
remainder are live. There is also a

company has optimised the tooling
set-up for the most regular and
reoccurring projects.“That in itself
has saved a lot of time in set-up
costs,” explains Brown.

a 3.4 kW drive and achieve a

are robust and stiff with a shank
diameter of 36 mm. Individually
controllable coolant pressure up to

Gantry-loaded turning
centre boosts efficiency
Wimbourne-based Rodford
Engineering, which serves
customers such as Airbus,
Cobham, Eaton and Magellan
Aerospace, recently started
considering the use of gantry-loaded
turning centres. The result was
a conversation with independent
machine tool specialist, Ray Vockins
Ltd (VFL), which working on
behalf of CMZ introduced Rodford
Engineering’s works director, Neil
Dallyn, to the CMZ range.
“We were looking to add to our
capacity and capability with a gantry
mind. Featuring the addition of the
sub-spindle on the CMZ machine,
these jobs are now produced
complete in one cycle. The cycle
time savings are significant, with
one job being reduced from a 40
minute cycle down to 12 minutes,
and the second seeing a reduction
from 60 minutes to 18 minutes.
With the benefit of the gantry
loader the machines can also
be run unmanned for significant
periods of time.

the specification and build quality of
the CMZ range certainly impressed
us, especially the fact that they build
both the machine and the gantry
loader, so integration isn’t an issue,”
says Dallyn.
As it happened, the gantry
machine was put on hold, but
the quality of the CMZ machines
convinced Dallyn to replace
an existing lathe with a CMZ
TL25ATM. Impressed by the
performance of this first CMZ
turning centre, a second machine,
this time a TA25TY-640 turning
centre, was installed in 2014.
“We were seeing certain
components in good batch
quantities repeating and this
gave us the confidence to look
once again at gantry loading
as we knew that in combination
with a twin-spindle machine it
could deliver efficiencies, while
relieving pressure on our five-axis
machining centres,” says Dallyn.
The choice of machine was a
CMZ TA25YS-GL20, which was
delivered with two key jobs in

subsets, the Robobar SBF213
minimises vibration and enhances
the smooth transition of bar from
the barfeed to the machine tool,
says the company. Furthermore,
the channels of the barfeed
accommodate two different
diameters simultaneously, while
processes that are running at
optimum speeds and feeds.
From a capacity standpoint,
the SBF326 is available in three
variants that offer a maximum bar
length capacity from 2 to 4 m for
