Yoko Fujimoto joined Sado no Kuni Ondekoza in 1976 and went on to become one of the founding members of Kodo in 1981. After three years as a performer, she stepped down from the stage to edit the monthly Japanese language newsletter and act as an instructor to the apprentices. In 1989 she began to sing again and has been Kodo's principal vocalist ever since. WORKSHOP: ODAIKO WORKSHOP: VOICE CIRCLE Yu Imafuku IWAMI NO KAZE Shunsuke Kimura Yu Imafuku is a taiko performer based in Masuda city, Shimane prefecture. Imafuku joined Ondekoza at the age of 24 and toured all over the world. After 4 years in Ondekoza, he stepped away from taiko and became an office worker for 7 years. He then purchased a full set of drums and became a solo artist playing the odaiko and Iwami Kagura, traditional music and dance from Shimane. Shunsuke Kimura is one of the most acclaimed composers and performers of traditional instruments in Japan today. He has travelled to every corner of Japan to find the various melodies, rhythms and styles of carnival and folk music, which he has assimilated into his own music-making. Ai Suenaga Eri Domoto played and performed taiko while working at Asano Taiko Co., Ltd. for 5 years since 1998. From 2000, Domoto commuted from Ishikawa prefecture and Shimane prefecture to study from Yu Imafuku. She then quit Asano Taiko and moved to Shimane prefecture to further her studies and to become a performer at Iwami no Kaze. GRAND MASTER Seiichi Tanaka SAN FRANCISCO TAIKO DOJO Kris Bergstrom IWAMI NO KAZE Ai Suenaga was born in Boufu-city, Yamaguchi prefecture. With extensive experience teaching youth and adults, she coaches in a variety of taiko topics and offers private lessons in taiko and xequere (Brazilian, two-hand shaker). 2-DAY TAIKO INTENSIVE SAN JOSE TAIKO For the past 40 years, Roy and PJ Hirabayashi have founded and cultivated San Jose Taiko into international status. Beginning as only the 3rd taiko group to form in the United States in 1973, Roy and PJ, guyded and developed a distinctive, contemporary, Asian-American sound that fuses traditional taiko rhythms with musical and cultural influences from around the world. Yuri Yoshida Coach Following four years as a performer and leader with the collegiate group, Stanford Taiko, Wells trained at Kenny Endo's Taiko Center of the Pacific in Hawaii before becoming a performing member of TAIKOPROJECT. He performed professionally with On Ensemble, TAIKOPROJECT, Portland Taiko, and coordinated the 2011 North American Taiko Conference before turning his attention to taiko teaching. Kato is Principal at LATI, where he is dedicated to student success and community building. WORKSHOP: FUE BASICS FOR KUMIDAIKO WORKSHOP: IMAFUKU STYLE YATAI BAYASHI Eri Domoto IWAMI NO KAZE Yuta Kato Principal Akitoshi Asano This 2-day intensive will be led by Yuta Kato and Kris Bergstrom. Asano Taiko Akitoshi Asano, born in Ishikawa prefecture, is the Administrative Director at The Asano Foundation for Taiko Culture and Research. Akitoshi successfully created a 3 shaku (90cm in diameter) odaiko with the knowledge and technique passed down since 1609. Since then, Asano Taiko has been known for its odaiko (3shaku or larger). Akitoshi also has been involved with publishing taiko related books called "Taikology" as well as other instructional books. LECTURE: HISTORY OF TAIKO CURRICULUM 1-ee-and-uh Truffle Hunt Designed to shake out the bugs lurking in taiko players' stick control and rhythmic understanding, "1-ee-and-uh Truffle Hunt" uses the foundational "1-ee-and-uh" drill in a variety of configurations to focus on dexterity basics. Learn the 16 patterns that underlie most of the taiko music we play and a systematic approach to uncovering and overcoming your weakest rhythms. With before-and-after tests, the intensive aims to provide measurable improvement in four technical areas -- stick control, timing, improvisation, and the learning of new rhythms -- and teach a self-sympathetic approach to practice that is uplifting and effective.
