Akerman
is a former first
prize winner in
the Guitar Foundation of America competition and is a frequent performer both as a
soloist and with the Akerman-Teixeira guitar duo. She is head of the classical guitar
program at Kennesaw State University and is president of the Atlanta Guitar Guild,
a non-profit guitar society. She has performed/taught/adjudicated at GFA festivals,
the Festival de Guitarra Paracho in Paracho, Mexico, the Festival Intrenacional
