Division of Student Affairs
One of my favorite parts of my job is meeting the students who are working with our staff to
do amazing things throughout campus and the world. I am so proud to share some of those
accomplishments with you through the Division of Student Affairs’ annual report.
Florida State University’s Division of Student Affairs is recognized nationally in our field
for programs such as e-Portfolio in the Career Center and facilities such as the 108-acre Rec
SportsPlex for outdoor recreational sports. Through programs such as these, we offer students
resources and opportunities to learn important skills to become leaders within their field. None of
these highlights would be possible without the collaboration with students or support of donors.
I hope you enjoy reading the highlights of the departments and features on a few students who
have been engaged in various Division of Student Affairs programs. These students, along with
so many others, are making a noticeable difference in the lives of others and we consider it an honor to help them achieve their
inspiring goals.
Thank you for taking the time to join me in reflecting on our accomplishments of the past year. We will continue playing an
instrumental role within the University, by engaging students to learn both in and out of the classroom.

BRITTANY JOINER
A
s a student at Florida State University, Brittany
Joiner became involved with many programs
through the Division of Student Affairs such as
student organizations, University Housing and
the Dean of Students department, but there is one
department where she spent her time that has opened
up a door to her future. That department is the FSU
Career Center. Brittany is using her communications
degree to pursue the management trainee program
with the clothing retailer, Buckle.
Brittany utilized the variety of Career Center
services including drop-in career and resume advising,
as well as Seminole Futures, which is a student career
exposition for full-time and internship opportunities.
“Seminole Future was helpful because I learned how
to present myself to an employer without having to
rely on my resume to speak for me.”

Brittany has also spent time as a Mock Interview
Program mentor and intern. The Mock Interview
Program offers students the opportunity to practice
their interview skills with their peers, followed up
with feedback on things they could improve upon
when interviewing with a future employer. “I also
was able to practice my own interviewing skills as I
was working with my peers to help them land their
next job.” It was while Brittany was in this role that
she began creating a professional relationship with
her current employer.
“I have really enjoyed working with the company
and I am getting training in both customer service
and leadership experience.” After a yearlong training
program, Brittany will transfer to a new store within
the company.
STEFAN SCHEUERMANN
S
tefan Scheuermann’s passion for sports and
studies in management came together in 2005,
when the then-freshman was hired as an official
for intramural basketball. He originally became
interested in intramural sports, offered through
Campus Recreation, when he signed up to play, but
rather found himself in a different role on the court.
Over the next five years, Stefan moved up in the
department, gaining greater responsibilities at his job.
He was promoted to the position of supervisor for the
intramural department and was placed on its student
leadership team. Stefan’s responsibilities range from
training new employees to making sure intramural
participants are cared for when injured. Also, as a
sports management graduate student, Stefan was
an instructor in rock climbing, weight training and
aerobic conditioning.
These part-time jobs offered him experience and
friendships that taught him a variety of invaluable
skills. “By the time I was a sophomore in college I
had hired, fired, taught, evaluated, worked in teams,
supervised, disciplined, resolved conflicts, cared for
injured and ill students, and gone through extensive
training in team building, customer service, and a
whole list of skills that are usually not offered until
after college.”
Stefan was recognized as both Overall Employee
of the Year and Supervisor of the Year for his work
in the intramural department. “These awards meant
a lot to me because of the time I have given, the
affection I have for our staff and the loyalty I feel for
the program and the school.” A staff and school that
he now calls “his family” thanks to his time at FSU.

TIFFANY LANIER
A
fter President Barack Obama’s election as the 44th
President of the United States and his message of
bringing about change, Tiffany Lanier was inspired
to make strides locally to bring together Florida State
University and to celebrate unity in diversity through
knowledge and acceptance.
It was at LeaderShape that she brought this idea to
life, and founded an organization she calls Kauz4Unity
Coalition. “We wanted to bring awareness to social
issues and discuss different concerns in an effort to
break down any discrimination across campus.”
Kauz4Unity is devoted to promoting social and
cultural awareness through an inclusive environment
or “safe place” for people to discuss an array of social
issues such as stereotypes and discrimination.
Tiffany is also an active member of the
Ambassadors of Multicultural Affairs with the Center
for Multicultural Affairs who hosts FSUnity Day.

“This is a day to bring together all of campus, not
just minorities.” The goal of the day is to help her
peers see themselves as one campus and encourage
people to take the time to know each other and build
community as a student population. Tiffany says she
does not want Kauz4Unity to be an organization that
comes and goes, but be a movement across campus
to become more united. “I have grown so much
through my involvement in Kauz4Unity, not only
learning about myself but also motivating others to
be inspired and see the vision of a united campus.”
ANA NG
A
fter spending the first two years of her college
career at the Florida State University campus
in Panama City, Panama, Ana Ng transferred to
the Tallahassee campus so she could become fluent
in English. Ana, a finance major with a minor in
Hispanic marketing communication, wasted no time
looking for ways to get involved.
In only two years, Ana has become an active member
in many organizations, including Internal Vice
President of the International Business Association
and Vice President of the Oscar Arias Sanchez
Hispanic Honor Society. She is currently leading
InternatioNOLE, which organizes social, educational,
and cultural events to provide the opportunity
for students with international backgrounds and
globally-minded local students.
Although Ana loves her Chinese heritage, her time
in Latin America has made an impact on where she
wanted to spend her time. “My participation in the
Oscar Arias Sanchez Hispanic Honor Society allows
me to meet new people with the same interests and
also help with various community service projects.”
Her many leadership roles may not have been
possible if it were not for her participation in
LeaderShape, a program that “teaches students to
lead with integrity.” Ana has been a participant and
student organizer of the LeaderShape program. Ana
says LeaderShape taught her “how to have a healthy
disregard for the impossible” and credits the sixday program with providing invaluable learning
experiences, including how to be part of an effective
team.
All of her hard work and dedication has paid
off. Ana is a recipient of the Lena Meyer Gustavson
Scholarship from the College of Business. She says
the past two years at FSU have expanded her horizons
and she has become more outgoing and open-minded
of others.

JAIME BAYO
G
iving back to the community has always been
important to Jaime Bayo. Selected as one of
twelve incoming freshmen to participate in the elite
Service Scholars program, Jaime has recorded more
than 1,000 volunteer hours during his four years at
Florida State University.
Jaime will continue serving others this
summer while working on his honors thesis focusing
on non-profit organizations in Latin America, and
completing a “serviceship,” a service scholarship,
in Panama. He will work with Civitas Panama, an
organization that promotes civic education to middle
and high school students. He will also train teachers
to use technical resources to match classrooms in
Panama with classes in south Florida, allowing for a
collaboration of cultures and ideas.

International collaboration is nothing new for
Jaime. He served as the program assistant for PeaceJam
Southeast, an international education program
which brings together youth with Nobel Peace Prize
Laureates. The Southeast Conference, hosted by FSU,
is the second largest regional PeaceJam conference in
the United States. This year, more than 500 high
school students participated in and were mentored
by approximately 60 FSU students throughout the
conference.
During his sophomore year, Jaime created the
first FSU chapter of “Light the Night,” a fundraising
walk that is part of a national event for the Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society. His idea has grown and after 3
years, the 2009 event raised more than $104,000 and
involved more than 1,500 participants.
Jaime, an Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
major, says he will continue his quest to help others
after he graduates from FSU. He plans to seek a
master’s degree in public administration at Florida
State in preparation to become an administrator with
a non-profit agency.
CHELSEA ZIEMBKO
I
t’s a chance to be part of something bigger than
myself.” That is what led Chelsea Ziembko to join
the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life during
her freshman year at Florida State University. Now a
senior and the Mission Education & Advocacy chair
of the organization, Chelsea teaches others how they
can empower themselves and others to find a cure for
cancer. The FSU chapter of Relay for Life exceeded
1,800 participants in their 18 hour fundraising walk.
This year’s goal of $160,000 was met, and it will go
toward funding cancer research. “Everyone knows
someone that has been affected by cancer, yet there
is no cure.”
The Marketing and Human Resources
Management major from Gulf Breeze, FL, holds
multiple leadership positions around campus.
Chelsea is the President of Omicron Delta Kappa,
an honor society dedicated to leadership, scholarship,
service, and the Florida State University community.
“ODK has allowed me to connect with faculty and
staff who truly care about our education and selfimprovement.”
Chelsea is also a member of the Alpha Delta
Pi sorority, where she holds the position of New
Member Coordinator. She describes her leadership
role in her sorority as coming full circle from when
she first joined the sorority. “I enjoyed having the
older members mentor me as a new member,” she
explained. “I am now able to be a role model for the
newest members.”
Chelsea plans on pursuing a career in Human
Resources, specifically in training, development, and
recruitment. She credits FSU for providing the skills
and opportunities to prepare her for her future career.
“FSU has provided me with a holistic experience that
I could not have gotten anywhere else. I’m proud to
be an FSU student, and know that FSU will always
be a part of my life.”

AL HEARTLEY
W
hen Al Heartley came to Florida State
University, he knew he wanted to get involved
in theatre. Al has successfully accomplished his dream
by becoming an actor, director, and researcher in
the field. What he didn’t plan on was the personal
satisfaction he would gain from campus involvement,
both inside and outside of the classroom.
As a freshman, he became involved with the
Student Government Association and during his
second semester on campus he was elected to the 61st
Student Government Senate. Al says his involvement
helped him balance his love for politics and
government, while being an “advocate for the arts.”
His advice to others would be, “Take that chance to
get involved. There are tons of reasons I could have
said, ‘No,’ but by saying ‘Yes,’ many opportunities
have become available to me.”

Al only spent one year in SGA. That experience
served as a springboard into a number of different
campus organizations. His sophomore year, he
became involved with University Housing as a
Resident Assistant. Al will continue to serve in this
role for the third year. “I love being involved with
residents in the halls. It can be challenging, but
it is also very rewarding when I can give freshmen
advice and help them learn while having fun.” Al
encourages his residents to live their life according
to a quote from Aristotle, “Pleasure in the job puts
perfection in the work.”
This perfection led him to win an Atlantic Coast
Conference Fellowship to research and direct the play
The Brothers Size by up and coming playwright Tarell
Alvin McCraney.
DANIEL MATUTE
T
wo years ago, Daniel Matute transferred to Florida
State University from Manatee Community
College (now called State College of Florida). While
in high school, Daniel had his own small group of
friends who had similar interests but did not find that
same environment when he attended community
college.
He decided he wanted to change that when he
transferred to Tallahassee. During the first week on
campus he attended Seminole Sensation Week and
learned about the University Counseling Center’s
RENEW (Realizing Everyone’s Needs for Emotional
Wellness) program. “I knew right away this was the
perfect organization. I quickly decided this is where
I want to make my name at FSU.”
RENEW’s mission is to bridge the gap between
counseling sessions and students with topics such as
managing time, dealing with stress, learning study
skills, and building healthy relationships. Daniel
claims, “Talking to your peers about difficult topics
puts things in a different perspective.” The topics that
Daniel has learned have helped him personally and
professionally to give accurate advice to friends who
are in emotional need.
When Daniel wanted to get involved on campus,
he was looking for a group of people to be his family
away from home, which is what he has found within
RENEW. “You come to college, not only to get a
degree to get a job, but to find what you love.”
Daniel will use what he has learned both in and
out of the classroom to pursue graduate school for a
Ph.D. in cognitive research.

im Meenan and Jill McConnel Meenan met at FSU
through their involvement with Student Government
Association (SGA). This may be a common story
throughout SGA’s history, but it is rare that both husband
and wife served as Student Body President during their
time at FSU. The Tallahassee based couple says, “The life
experiences learned in this role shaped much of who we
are today, both personally and professionally.”
When Tim and Jill decided to generously support
FSU, there was no question that their gift would support
members of the SGA. “This organization helped us learn
about representation, services and advocacy within the
university structure, and we wanted to give back to help
others learn those important life skills.”
The “Tim and Jill Meenan Student Government
Scholarship” provides an opportunity to annually
recognize an exceptional leader who exemplifies the
strength, skill and character of the FSU SGA. This award
is presented each year at SGA inauguration and stands as a
lasting tribute to the vision and commitment of Tim and
Jill Meenan and to memorialize their service as Student
Body Presidents in 1981-1982 and 1982-1983.

r. Andrea Woods and Mr. Stuart Mellish are parents
who lead by example in showing their children,
current Florida State University students, the importance
of giving back to others in their time of need. Dr. Woods
and Mr. Mellish generously created an endowment which
provides support for domestic “serviceships.” Typically
done over the summer, the Serviceship Program provides
funding for selected FSU students to focus 8 – 12 weeks
of their summer working full-time at a non-profit agency
servicing those suffering from domestic natural disasters.
The “Andrea Woods and Stuart Mellish Serviceship in
Domestic Natural Disasters” provides opportunities for
students to provide service in the wake of disasters such as
Hurricane Katrina and the recent floods in Tennessee and
Arkansas. Thanks to their generous support, Dr. Woods
and Mr. Mellish have afforded FSU students the ability to
make a difference throughout the United States of America.

ichaela Thomas graduated from FSU in May 2009 and
planned to start graduate school at the University of
Central Florida in the fall. She had served as a Resident Assistant
(RA) in Kellum Hall through University Housing for two years
as an undergraduate and enjoyed it so much that she wanted to
make it her career. On June 28, 2009, all of these plans came to
an abrupt halt when Michaela was injured in a car crash in her
hometown of Melbourne, FL. She died from her injuries two
days later.
Kathleen and William Yockey created the “Michaela
Thomas Heart of the RA Award” in August 2009 to help
preserve the memory and generous spirit of their daughter. The
award recognizes and provides a scholarship to a returning RA
whose passion, leadership, and values exemplify the University
Housing community.
Kathleen Yockey says, “I received an e-mail from one of her
former residents the other day that called her a ‘life-liver’…
because she fully embraced life and all it brought. Every parent
thinks their kids are something special, but I know, beyond
mother-love, that she was something special.”
Thanks to the generous support of Kathleen and William
Yockey, the spirit and kindness of Michaela Thomas will
continue to spread to future generations of Seminoles.

s a member of the Florida State University Flying
High Circus in the early 1950s, Elaine Geiger
enjoyed the spotlight during gravity-defying aerial
acts such as the cloud swing, the Spanish web and the
triple trapeze. To honor her career in the spotlight,
Ms. Woodward’s family and friends have established a
$25,000 endowed scholarship in her name. The result of
their efforts is a $500 award given annually to a student
who has demonstrated significant contributions to the
overall circus program through a helpful, enthusiastic,
and positive attitude while also maintaining an aboveaverage grade point average.
Ms. Woodward, now in her 70’s, was thrilled when
she learned of the scholarship. “The circus was such
a large part of my life, and I still love it. I can’t think
of anything that teaches students the importance of
cooperation and trust more than being a member of the
FSU Flying High Circus.”
The annual scholarship will continue to take students
to new heights thanks to the generosity and support of
Elaine Geiger Tully Woodward’s family and friends.
