AGHOA Meeting: Date: Thurs. Feb. 16, 2012 Time: 7:00 p.m. Place: South Metro Fire Station on Maximus Dr. See agenda on page 12 Page 1 Happy New Year! I sincerely hope 2012 is better than 2011 for everyone. As we begin this year, get ready for tax season, get our homes ready for spring, help our kids through the downhill side of the school year, catch spring fever and look forward to summer vacations. It is also the time to sign up and became a member of the Acres Green Home Owner’s Association (AGHOA) for 2012. I can hear it now – he wants money. True, but do you know why? We don’t ask for the moon – we only ask $25.00 for the year. Any idea what Lone Tree or Highlands Ranch has for annual association dues? If you help out in the community or are a senior or single, we ask even less! Remember nothing is mandatory, we exist only as long as we have your active participation and monetary support. I can hear those brain cells going round and round asking “what do I get for 25.00?” I have written about this indirectly over the years but maybe it is time to put some reasons out there for you to consider: First and foremost, you wouldn’t be reading this if we didn’t have the AGHOA. There might be a newsletter without us but it might not be free and maybe not as frequent. The AGHOA helps to support the Acres Green Newsletter by subsidizing the delivery five times a year. The advertisements cover printing costs only. To mail the newsletter for just one first class mailing is close to $500.00 – way beyond our ability to afford. Using a mailing service is also more than we pay now for delivery. Several years ago we worked out a deal where our local Boy Scout Troop did the delivery but now that option is gone (see below). We are working with a local Acres Green company to deliver the newsletter at a cost less than mailing would be. But again, this costs money. Having the Greenleaf delivered to all homes gives the AGHOA the means to communicate with all the households in Acres Green. We have moved into the technology age; we now have a website (http://www.acresgreen.org) and we communicate through email, but this doesn’t reach everyone – only the newsletter does. Did you know that the AGHOA is the Charter Organization for the Cub Scout Pack 986? There is no other entity in Acres Green that provides this service. Each Cub Scout Pack requires an organization to sponsor them or they couldn’t exist. The Cub Scouts are an important organization for both the kids and the Acres Green community at large. We hope that through scouting, we are able to be a part of raising future outstanding citizens of our country. The AGHOA did sponsor Boy Scout Troop 986, which existed for almost 25 years, but due to low participation, the Troop is currently inactive but we are hoping that some time in the future we will once again have a Boy Scout Troop. The Troop produced over twenty Eagle Scouts, most who lived in Acres Green. Page 2 February 2012 TOP 5 REASONS TO JOIN METRUM CREDIT UNION #1: CONVENIENCE IS KING Credit unions often beat the competition with the number of branch locations and have a network of ATM’s larger than that of any bank in the country. Utilizing their cooperative structure, credit unions work together to provide better services and access to their members. #2: Over 4,443 branches nationwide (and growing) Over 28,000 Surcharge-Free CO-OP ATMs BETTER INTEREST RATES AND LOWER FEES Because of our not-for-profit cooperative structure (read more below), we are able to offer better interest rates and services with lower, or no, fees when compared to the for-profit competition. #3: SERVICES TO MEET YOUR NEEDS Metrum Credit Union offers a wide range of services for your individual needs. From free checking and electronic services to auto and home loans, we are ready to serve you and your family. #4: MEMBER-OWNED FINANCIAL COOPERATIVE Metrum Credit Union is another choice for your banking needs. We are based on the cooperative structure of people pooling their resources (money) together and helping each other. When you become a ‘member’ of a Metrum Credit Union, you become an owner. Because we are not-for-profit and owned by our members, revenue received from any fees assessed or interest paid on loans is directed back to the members through lower cost services and typically better rates on loans and savings accounts. #5: YOUR NEIGHBORS AND FAMILY BELONG More and more, people are making the move from their nationwide banks to local credit unions. You’ve heard about credit unions in the news, read about them in the papers and probably have heard your friends and family talking about them. Now is a great time to check it out! Ready to learn more and move your money to a credit union? Your community has one available; Metrum Community Credit Union (metrumcu.org). Please feel free to contact us to learn how we can assist with all of your banking needs. 303-770-4468 www.metrumcu.org 6980 South Holly Circle Centennial, CO 80112 Page 3 February 2012 Information provided by Lynne Wachter, Communications Department, South Suburban Parks and Recreation To our HOA Neighbors: Please visit the South Suburban home page www.sspr.org entitled “Welcome to South Suburban! The New Year could be even busier than the last. My dahlia tubers are ordered so I can plant them in May after I’m back from corn planting in Nebraska. Before then I have to get a basement bathroom re-modeled before friends come in from out of state to ride snowmobiles for a few days. More important than those personal items however, is the fact that… This is an election year. Whether you care about politics or not…whether or not you follow the election cycle, it’s your job to be involved at some level. Republican Caucuses will be held in Douglas County on Feb. 7th, Democratic on March 6th. Caucuses are the first step in the election process for our elective offices. After caucuses, there are county and state and national conventions and after the general election campaign (known as the “Silly Season”), we vote in November. For further information on how the process works and how you Garage Sales this spring! This Spring we are going to try something a little different for the annual Neighborhood Garage Sales. We are going to pick a weekend for the sale, and put up our large commu- can be involved simply search online for “Douglas County Colorado Democrats”, or “Douglas County Colorado Republicans” and spend a little time learning the process. Yup….I know you’re busy, but you’re not too busy to take a few minutes to do your civic duty. Take part if you can in the primary process and support the candidates of your choice. It can be an exciting learning process if you just take the first steps. At the very least be an informed voter in November. Colorado was 4th highest in the nation with an election turnout of over 70% in the 2008 General Election. While that’s better than most, is it good enough? If you’re temped to not vote this year consider this…we are now winding down a ten year war in Iraq. Part of the reason for that fight was to free a people from a dictator……to give them the right to vote. In that conflict over four thousand of our soldiers died, over 32,000 were wounded, and over 125,000 Iraqi’s died. Families were shattered and a phenomenal amount of time and treasure was spent. Those sacrifices give the folks in that far away country an opportunity for freedom, and now it’s their responsibility to govern themselves. If they fail, it’s their fault. The same applies to us. nity garage sale signs at both entrances before that weekend. We will advertise on Craig’s list. There will be no charge to participate. We will consider advertising in the Post, if funds are available. early June for the sales. Volunteers to make this event are always welcome. Contact Jean if you are willing to volunteer your time to help make this event even more successful . Over twenty years ago I went to my first Precinct Caucus. I had voted in every General Election prior to that, but was not further involved in the process. I was stunned to find how few people were involved at the local level in selecting candidates for higher office. They were all good folks, but honestly it scared me to realize the power they held over the rest of us. I knew then I had to be more involved. Take a little time to learn the process. It’s one of the more important things to put on your schedule this year. One more thing. South Suburban is once again offering their Matching Gifts Program this year. Please see page four for some information regarding this program and some projects that were funded last year. If anyone has an idea for a project in the neighborhood, please let me know so we can put in a request. OK, I’m done for this time. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for listening. Have you ever wondered about the signs at each entrance to the community letting folks know that this is Acres Green? If there were no signs, people would think we lived in Lone Tree or Highlands Ranch. This is unincorporated Douglas County – and from all I’ve heard over the years, darn proud of it too! The north entrance sign was donated (and constructed) by a longtime resident and has been around for as long as I can remember and I’ve lived here since 1989. The east entrance was a different story. For years it was the “forgotten” entrance. Several years ago the AGHOA was able to get a sign erected, looking very similar to the north sign. We worked closely with Douglas County and South Suburban on permits and electricity. If it weren’t for your annual memberships and donations this would never have been possible. Did you know that the light- ing for the sign isn’t “free”? The AGHOA picks up this monthly cost. If we didn’t it would be “lights out.” Each year the AGHOA has put up Christmas lights and decorations at both entrances and the north garden. The lights are either purchased (or donated) to replace old and worn out lights. The greenery and red-ribbons are not free either. The electricity, as stated above, is not free and has to be paid for – the AGHOA pays for this too from your annual dues. I really wish this next item was held more often. Years ago in conjunction with the Boy Scouts we held a Spring Cleanup/Roll-off. This event raised a lot of money for the Boy Scouts and more importantly, helped to clean up our yards. The first several years, it was a huge success, but as the years went by, we had less and less participation – our yards were looking better? The roll-off was finally discontinued because the cost was increasing each year to where it Jean Henke AGHOA Recorder & Publisher of the Greenleaf Our last meeting was held on Dec. 15 at the Lone Tree Brewery. We were amazed at the turnout! There were people there who we had not seen for years! It was great to see everyone. While we did attempt to hold a regular meeting, it was just too noisy to be heard so we really shortened the meeting and enjoyed some social time with all who came out. Again, we are sorry we were not able to have more of a meeting. We did hear from the PTO who thanked us for the $250 donation to the 9th annual Acres Green Elementary School Auction this year. Sandy made available our Treasurers report. As of Dec. we had available funds of only $76.35. Expenses included Xcel energy, South Suburban picnic table through Matching funds, front garden materials, silent auction donation and newsletter delivery. Our CD ($2,854.74) does not mature until July. Your memberships are really important. Please see Ron’s article. Ron thanked everyone who came out. Everyone enjoyed the brews too! Ron had to reduce the number of right answers to his quiz, but did end up buying a few beers. He is planning another quiz later this year and hopes to have another meeting at the Brewery in (Continued on page 7) wasn’t worth the effort and the trash company that subsidized the transportation costs stopped participating. We did work with Douglas County a few years ago to bring the roll-off back and it was a hit, to say the least. Did you know that if the AGHOA didn’t exist, the collaboration with Douglas County probably would not have happened and you would not have had this free roll-off! Garage Sales! We used to see sign after sign taped or tied to the stop signs throughout the summer months. So several years ago the AGHOA sponsored the Acres Green Annual Garage Sale. We picked a weekend in June, did advertising in the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News (remember that paper) and had great participation over the years. We charged a minimal amount to advertise and provided maps at each entrance. In the early days, traffic was great on that one weekend and it cut down on the traffic because we focused on the “community garage sale” instead of the individual sales. Without the AGHOA, there would be no way or at least no easy way to coordinate a sale like this. Because of the AGHOA and its association with South Suburban PR, through the Matching Gifts Program, over the years we have worked to see that our parks and open spaces are maintained and enhanced. The Matching Funds Program provides an organization to match, up to $2000 with South Suburban. Some of the items we have been able to get for the community; outdoor barbeque grills, picnic tables, trees at the east trail/sitting area and all those huge boulders between Altair Park and Kohl’s we had put in to keep individuals from tearing up the property. These are just a few of the joint effort by the AGHOA and South Suburban PR. The AGHOA also worked with South Suburban to get the pavilions (Continued on page 12) Page 8 February 2012 Acres Green Elementary School PTO 9th Annual Benefit Auction and Dinner February 25, 2012 5:00—10:00 pm Wildcat Auditorium at Southridge 4800 McArthur Ranch Road Highlands Ranch, CO 80130 Robin’s Piano Studio Piano lessons for all ages! The concept is neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers offer help with transportation, home care, household upkeep, and companionship. Both the volunteer and those who sign up for help are required to submit to a background check. Those who provide transportation are reimbursed for mileage. The program has a new grant and is ramping up. They would love some new volunteers and I can heartily recommend volunteering. There is no one more interesting than a senior citizen. One man that I drove to the VA center for medical services was a WWII veteran and we had a long conversation about his service and experiences on PT boat missions. I get much more out of volunteering than I give. I hope that if you need help or can give help you’ll consider this program. This would I know that most of you know have been another way for Lone Tree there are just two roads in and out of residents to bypass Park Meadows Dr. Acres Green. The subdivision is pretThe last and probably the best exty quiet and part of that is because ample of why I’m asking for your continued support of the AGHOA can be put into two words - solar panels. If the AGHOA wasn’t around, we would never have heard about the plan by the school district to put 450 solar panels on the school hill. How did you hear about it? The AGHOA receives communications from Douglas County regarding zoning and building activities. Notices would only have been sent to those nearby. For that matter, remember the school district considered Lone Tree sufficient notification! Without the combined efforts of members of the AGHOA working on getting the word out and those concerned and dedicated residents of Acres Green that pressed the issue through meetings and a petition drive, you would be looking at an industrial-looking field of solar panels covering most of the hill today. One more thing, your officers and directors are volunteers, who donate their time and talent because they care about the community. I hope this gives you a reason(s) to keep the AGHOA thriving and the residents of Acres Green informed of events and activities that directly affect you.
