The Road Widener can be operated in conjunction with skid steers, loaders, graders and backhoes. It is easily attached/ detached via its ‘Quick Connect Coupler’. The conveyor belt system accommodates hot mix asphalt as well as any other aggregate. Applications for the Road Widener include shouldering, road widening, trench backfilling and asphalt patching. The attachment was originally designed and developed by a paving contractor, out of necessity, in Wisconsin where it is still manufactured today. The machine was designed for highway departments, road contractors, landscapers and others who need to spread aggregate, particularly along roads where more flexibility is needed or for use in tighter conditions such as trails, paths and driveways. It also is used for trench work. Owners of the Road Widener skid steer attachment also use the machine to spread landscaping soil and asphalt. Road Widener’s innovative design makes it extremely flexible for use on road shoulders, driveways, trails and paths. It is easily maneuvered around road signs, guard rails, mailboxes and other structures along roads or paths and can disperse a 20ton truckload of aggregate in minutes. The Road Widener has a universal attachment, can be lifted by a skid loader, can be 4 EQUIPMENT REVIEW www.equipmentreview.ca Fall / Winter 2015 moved with a pick-up truck and can be transported by any common-width carrier. •C apable of dispersing a 20-ton truckload of gravel in minutes The Road Widener is offered with a righthand discharge as well as the original left-hand discharge. Combined with the inherent advantages of IPEX Water Service and Specialty Systems – proven strength and flexibility, combined with outstanding resistance to corrosion and chemical attack – comes quality assurance that exceeds the industry’s most demanding standards. This includes third-party certification from organizations such as the Canadian Standards Association, Factory Mutual, Underwriter’s Laboratories and NSF. Low maintenance and pumping costs Bionax PVCO IPEX states that third party studies from respected institutes confirm that Bionax is exceptionally corrosion resistant, unlike cast iron or concrete pressure pipes with pre-stressed steel wires that can degrade over time, leading to costly system failures. Like conventional PVC, Bionax is virtually corrosion-proof. Bionax is a molecularly-enhanced PVC pipe designed for water mains and sewage forcemains. Made from biaxiallyoriented PVC material, Bionax has almost double the strength of conventional PVC and three times the impact absorption capability. According to IPEX, Bionax is a pipe with all the benefits associated with conventional PVC, yet dramatically stronger and more impact resistant. Using a revolutionary new orientation process, this ultra high-tech process orients the PVC molecules both in the axial and circumferential directions (biaxial orientation). The result is a pipe with enhanced toughness and flexibility. Bionax is specially engineered to withstand the rigors of today’s installations. With less construction inspection, and less regular maintenance, the market is calling for a pipe that is more robust, stronger and easier to install. IPEX believes Bionax delivers on all three counts. 6 EQUIPMENT REVIEW Bionax’s larger interior diameters compared to other plastic pipes and smooth inner surface mean less friction, increased flow rates and lower pumping costs. In fact, Bionax retains its excellent hydraulic properties, keeping maintenance costs extremely low and saving energy throughout the system’s life. Unsurpassed corrosion resistance Lowest carbon footprint IPEX claims Bionax PVCO has the lowest carbon footprint of any municipal piping system, from the amount of energy used in its manufacture to its delivery to your jobsite. Bionax PVCO Pipe for Municipal Applications Bionax’s biaxial orientation dramatically enhances the pipe properties that are important to municipal designers: • Larger internal diameters increase flow rates and reduce pumping costs • Higher cyclic fatigue resistance for forcemain applications Bionax SR Bionax SR is PVCO pipe used for potable water systems and other pressure pipe applications where enhanced resistance to seismic activity is a requirement. Bionax SR - Seismic Water Pipe - combines the same strength, toughness and flexibility as standard Bionax pipe with the enhanced seismic-resistance benefits of an extended bell. The result is a municipal water transmission and distribution system that provides superior performance. Bionax SR can improve absorption of lateral ground strain of seismic events and provides other performance benefits including product consistency, industry standard dimensions and corrosion-resistant attributes for North American job sites. Advantages: • 6.1m (14 fewer joints per 500m) • New blade required every 1,500m of installation • Joint paint not required • Cast Iron Outside Diameter (CIOD), consistent with all North American manufactured water pipe fittings • Consistent outside diameter • Light Weight e.g. 300mm PC 235 psi pipe = 236 lbs. • No pipe puller required, all that’s needed is a simple bar and block assembly with a pipe stop For further information contact your local IPEX branch, or visit: www.ipexinc.com • Reduced surge pressure www.equipmentreview.ca Fall / Winter 2015 EQUIPMENT REVIEW 7 Commercial Truck Equipment Bibeau, Cancade and Renn Gravel and Dump Bodies Commercial Truck Equipment is a full service dealer for Bibeau, Cancade and Renn Gravel Boxes, Pups, End Dumps and Quad trailers. ‘CTE’ provides parts and service for these product lines. WinSport Canada is a non-profit organization that owns and operates world class winter sport environments and facilities located in Southern Alberta. These facilities include; Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, the Bill Warren Training Centre at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Canmore Alberta, and the Beckie Scott High Performance Training Centre on Haig Glacier Alberta. WinSport also funds two-thirds of the operating budget for the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. Since Ecoglo’s photoluminescent material operates on a physical reaction, the material will never fail or degrade over time. This means the strip provides the venue with a highcontrast step edge regardless of the lighting condition, while also reducing slips and falls from wet footwear and offering a fail-safe lighting source which, in an event of an emergency where smoke could be present, provide an illumination below the smoke level to safely guiding occupants. Since Accu-Flo also provided the certified installation, WinSport receives not only a maintenance-free guidance solution, but a 20year manufacturer warranty. Over this time and many more years, they will continue to save thousands of more dollars on maintenance and operating due to the multiple benefits they receive from Ecoglo’s products. Accu-Flo Meter Service is the local dealer for Ecoglo – a world leader in photoluminescent step edge, path finding, handrail and exit sign products for both outdoors and indoors. For more information, contact Accu-Flo Meter Service, or e-mail: Chassell@accuflo.com Since the 2010 National Building Code was adopted, Accu-Flo has been providing photoluminescent exit signs -saving their customers a significant amount of capital, which would otherwise be required by their electrical counter-parts. Not only do Ecoglo exit signs come with a 25-year manufacturer warranty, they also are rated to last 35+ years and never lose their performance over time. This allows building owners to eliminate all the maintenance associated with their exit signs, such as replacement bulbs, batteries and even the routine testing of the back-up power, providing these continuous cost savings over the life of the facility. For new construction, Ecoglo exit signs instantly pay for themselves by eliminating the associated wire and conduit which would otherwise be needed for electrical exit signs. Using Ecoglo’s E20 photoluminescent contrast strip, WinSport was able to save thousands of dollars, by eliminating the electrical requirements for the conventional alternative such as stair lighting, spot lights, etc. Along with the photoluminescent strip that is integrally bonded to the aluminum base, Ecoglo’s contrast strips are also comprised of an exceptionally hard wearing silicon-carbide non-slip strip. This strip is also colored, so that it also provides an even higher contrast level on the stair edge than is required by code. This not only helps to increase EQUIPMENT REVIEW Photoluminescent exit signs have been a part of Canada’s National Building Code since 2010. This National Building Code has since been adopted at the provincial level all across Canada. Under the new code, photoluminescent exit signs must be certified to the ULC572 standard. Within the testing of the standard, each sign must be legible at the required distance rating after being in the dark for a two hour period. This is different from the CSA standard for electrical exit signs, which only tests the optical brightness of the sign before the 2 hour period –inherently making the ULC572 standard even more stringent. Photoluminescent exit signs are nontoxic, non-radioactive, non-electrical and non-mechanical. Since they operate on a physical reaction, they are fail-safe, when the lights go out, they always glow. Accu-Flo Meter Service, the local Calgary stocking dealer for Ecoglo, has been improving building safety all over Alberta by providing fail-safe, sustainable exit signs which don’t require power consumption or maintenance. Like most facilities that strive to use best building practices, WinSport was faced with safety and guidance issues for their main arena at Canada Olympic Park in the CODA Athletic and Ice Complex. The issue was raised when they wanted their main arena that seats about 2,940 people to become a venue for concerts and events that required reduced lighting levels in. In order for them to provide adequate safety, they needed lighting on their stairs to provide the necessary way-finding for occupants during these events. WinSport recently contracted Accu-Flo Meter Service to provide Ecoglo photoluminescent contrast stripping in order to solve the problem. Photoluminescent material is a sustainable alternative to egress marking that is powered through a physical reaction that absorbs any source of ambient light. Then, when the lights go out, the material slowly releases this energy as a visible light source. 18 Ecoglo photoluminescent exit signs are charged by any ambient light, whether it be a natural or artificial source such as LED, HPS, incandescent etc… When the lights go out, they slowly release the energy they have stored providing an internal illumination that can be seen for up to a day after. www.equipmentreview.ca Fall / Winter 2015 EQUIPMENT REVIEW 19 A Viable Water Management Initiative Cutting irrigation water use does save you money! By Terry Ormrod, Western Canada Sales Manager, The Toro Company For some of us the cost of water is not something you might look at as a real dollar and cents cost. In reality it may be the costs related to accessing, filtering, delivering, and maintaining the water and the respective infrastructures supporting it. Your reason for considering an irrigation water management system may be as different as your city is from another city on the other side of the country. However, the one similarity you share is; quality, versatility and sustainability must always be in the forefront as you search out options in order to maximize your return on your investment. We all identify “Water Management” as low flush toilets, low water use showerheads, and irrigation rain sensor devices. In our day and age, it goes much deeper than that. As we all sit right now, your irrigation system very likely is the highest single water user in your respective region during the spring to fall growing season, and holds the greatest potential for water savings. Typically, we can see any given users’ water use double in the summer months. An Irrigation Water Management System (WMS) can and should save in the range of 3550% of this spring to fall water expenditure. That alone is usually enough to see the solid investment in your conservation efforts. Now let us consider the rest. How about your water supply infrastructure? Your pump stations, water mains, PRV stations, etc etc. They are all designed for a maximum range of flow. The max flow is the flow you would see during the hottest week of the summer and irrigation is what drives that peak up. If you are able to cut that peak by the 40%, you reduce water use, thus extending the life of your infrastructure and defer the costs of upgrades of such for many years. Liability is always an issue and managing your parks irrigation systems to minimize the liability of a hillside slumping - or a park or buildings flooding is a concern as well. This concern is answered by a quality WMS. Benefits beyond those already mentioned are; a WMS will assist your irrigation crews and turf managers in doing what they do best, and that is to grow grass and manage turf. The vandalism issue in every community is always a concern, and a WMS will give you all the best tools to combat this; whether it’s entire system shutoff during grad weekend, water window management to stay out of the peak vandal hours, or zone shutdown and alarm once a sprinkler is kicked off to minimize water waste and site damage liability. Keeping your water window to a minimum is of paramount importance in the summer months. User groups playing soccer or baseball etc on overly wet fields in the morning causes turf damage, site liability, as well as bad will with the user groups. Then the favorite in the back of the minds of all municipal agencies are the calls from locals on a rainy day giving you grief when the city irrigation is running during rainfall. A good quality WMS solves all of these issues, and more. City of Saskatoon leads the way The Toro ‘Sentinel’ Series WMS is an advanced, state-of-the-art Water Management System, with customers such as the Beijing Olympic city, Disney Wide World of Sports, Notre Dame University, Princeton University; and the list goes on. In Canada Toro supplies sites such as; The Cities of- Nanaimo, 20 EQUIPMENT REVIEW www.equipmentreview.ca Fall / Winter 2015 Kelowna, Prince George, Burnaby, North Van, West Van, Delta, U of A, U of C, U of S, along with a number of large commercial users. Just over 70 sites in Western Canada to date. In September of 2009, the City of Saskatoon began what is believed to be the largest one time purchase of central control products seen to date. The Beijing Olympic village was 162 controllers. The combined controller count of AC and DC sites in Saskatoon is in excess of 240 as of August 2015. Network communications to five hubs and four weather stations control the ET based run times. Their choice for the project was the Toro Sentinel System, with the cities of Trail, Coquitlam, Whistler, and the Kamloops School District choosing Sentinel soon after jut to mention a few. Who is your Sentinel? The Sentinel WMS will automatically adjust irrigation runtimes based on current weather data provided by your choice of a number of weather sources. The system will monitor all irrigation cycles and respond to any anomalies due to vandalism, broken mainlines, ‘real time’ rainfall, or other hydraulic issues as well as managing the flow of the system maximizing efficiency of the sprinklers and minimizing the water/vandalism window. Maintenance of irrigation sites is made efficient and user-friendly with the handheld remote radio for accurate and instant zone activations. Remote access to the system via a Smart Phone and or tablet makes the system a user friendly part of your Turf Maintenance system. A well designed and operated WMS can show an end-user a savings in Irrigation water use in the range of 35% and beyond. Features of the Central Control System Sentinel has been designed to operate as an ‘Irrigation Central Control’ system without a middle manager or the continual reliance on the office-based computer or any additional hardware in the field. Operating outside of the bounds of these hardware limitations and maintenance issues is a great benefit to the end user; as Sentinel relies on nothing more than the power to be on to operate as a fully functional water management system. Sentinel features true two-way FCC compliant UHF radio communication, as well as the option of Landline phone, Cell phone, Ethernet, SCADA, Fiber Optic, or Spread Spectrum, or a combination of some or all of these options. The numerous communication options allows users to talk to an almost unlimited number of satellites over any distance, overcoming typical communication obstacles rendering many of Toro’s competitors inoperable. Reporting capabilities include: Water Cont’d... Field Satellite Features Some features of the Sentinel Field Satellite include: • Real time flow monitoring at the Satellite without requiring additional components when using flow sensors with-in the system • Field satellite retains full functionality of the entire system thus not being susceptible to any office computer or communication malfunctions by others. • Modular station counts from 12 to 204 in 12-station increments, or in a two wire decoder configuration for up to 204 stations or a hybrid of both • 16 sensor inputs per satellite allowing for coverage of all your points of connection on the site. • Up to 16 programs and 8 start times per program, station run times from one minute to four hours and 59 minutes, or options of repeats or continuous run • Global adjustment from 0–250%; percent adjust by program from 0–250% • Ability to read and respond to numerous brands of high end weather stations • Electrical current draw monitoring will shut down a station that shows excessively high electrical draw on the wire path, and notify the user and continue program operation • Ability to operate up to 16 programs simultaneously based on water and power restrictions only. • Its true two-way communication allows for changes in the field to be uploaded to the central computer and allows two-way communication with a hand-held radio in stand –alone mode • The Sentinel controller in the field can also act as a re-hub (leapfrog) of communication in the case of a remote Sentinel controller residing beyond 22 EQUIPMENT REVIEW the limitations of the standard UHF communications. Again allowing for a solid system and minimizing the customer’s capital expenditures along the way. advance through the system during winterizing, or complete rain shutdown just to note a few • Voice and data capable Go Green. • System on and off command activation In addition, all of this can be run without a connection to the local power grid. Solar panels and DC power are quickly taking over the Sentinel picture as more than just a far-fetched option for power. Now virtually every one of your Sentinel irrigation controllers can be solar powered and retain 100% of the functionality of the AC powered units. Saves on the connection cost to the grid and of course the power to run the site. Saving power goes hand in hand with saving water and Sentinel does both very well. • Great remote access to zones positioned in medians, boulevards, distant or hard to reach sites • Considered an advancement in Safety management • Active flagging of sprinklers while aerating sports fields. • Onsite staffs’ best friend For more information contact your local EMCO Irrigation or Vankel Distributors location, or visit: www.toro.com Hand-held and Other Remote Features • The hand-held capability in stand-alone or Central mode allows data commands to manually turn on individual or multiple stations, initiate programs, www.equipmentreview.ca Fall / Winter 2015 EQUIPMENT REVIEW
