GETTYSBURG’S UNKNOWN SOLDIER: The Life, Death, and Celebrity
of Amos Humiston: Tuesday, June 23 at 10 am. Of the multiple of
human interest stories associated with the battle of Gettysburg, that of
Amos Humiston has long been regarded as one of the
most poignant. Join Civil War Historian, Mark H. Dunkelman to learn the fate of Gettysburg’s Unknown Soldier,
Amos Humiston. Killed on the first day of the battle,
he was identified only by a photograph of his children
clutched in his hands as he died. The quest to learn his
identity in 1863 struck a national nerve that helps us to understand the

THE KEEP MOVING PROGRAM: Thursday, July 23rd at
10:00 am. Join Ed Pomfred, R.N., Director of The Keep Moving
Program, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, to learn
about this program, a network of more than 150 local walking
clubs across Massachusetts, which promotes physical activity and
socialization for persons over the age of 50. Keep Moving clubs
keep seniors on their feet from Attleboro to Yarmouth.
Physical activity can improve one’s overall health and wellbeing. Modest levels of activity done each day for a total of 30
minutes can prevent or control heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, colon cancer and weight gain.
In addition to reducing the risk of disease you can boost your
energy level, improve self-esteem, and reduce stress.
As they get older people frequently become less physically
active. Many people of all ages are not motivated to be physical
active and need the structure of a planned program. A walking
club motivates seniors to stick with a physical activity program.
To join the Attleboro walking club, The Attleboro Wanderers,
or get more information about frequency and time of day walks
call 508 223-2235. Club members from the Attleboro Wanderers
will be here for any questions you may have.

THE MOST DISGUSTING FISH IN THE SEA: Monday, July
27th at 10:00 am. Join Dr. Robert Kenney, Associate Marine
Research Scientist at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography
for this interesting program. There are those who have called
hagfish, also known as slime eels, “strange,” or even “interesting,” but the word most often applied seems to be “disgusting.”
As writer Richard Conniff admitted in an article in Audubon in
1991—“I must issue a retraction. I once wrote in this magazine
that ‘it is hard to imagine an animal as disgusting or improbable
as the housefly.’ It’s clear now that I wasn’t trying hard enough.
Slime eels are more disgusting and improbable, and fishermen
have known it for centuries.”
Hagfish are scavengers—the first to arrive on the carcass of
a dead whale on the ocean bottom. They will also feed on a
dying codfish stuck in a gillnet by crawling inside and eating from
the inside out. And they can produce buckets of sticky slime,
which is also the literal translation of their scientific name.
So why does anyone care? They are eaten in some places
in the world, and their skins can be made into expensive leather.
Even the slime may turn out to have scientific and economic
value. But biologists find them mostly interesting for what we
can learn about evolution. Hagfish are the closest living relatives of the vertebrates. They have changed little in 500 million
years, so they can give us some insight into our own distant
ancestors.

OUTREACH UPDATE
With Kathy Levin (ext. 24)
SOCIAL SECURITY President Obama recently signed the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This act provides for the
one-time payment of $250 to individuals who get Supplemental
Security Income (SSI) or Social Security benefits. We expect everyone who is entitled to a payment to receive it by late May 2009.
No action is required on your part. If you have questions or need
assistance, contact Kathy or Melissa in the Outreach Department
at 508-223-2235.
IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED AN ELIGIBILITY OR ANNUAL REVIEW
FOR MASSHEALTH WE CAN HELP! Have you been notified by
MassHealth or another state agency that you need to fill out an
eligibility review or annual review? With the current fiscal crisis in
the Commonwealth, our state agencies are enforcing rights that
they have had all along: namely to assure via an annual review
that disabled children and adults receiving public benefits remain
within the asset and income guidelines of the programs that benefit
them. If you need assistance filling out your review form, we are
here to help! Contact Kathy or Melissa in the Outreach Department
at 508-223-2235.
WEB SITE HELPS SENIORS TO STRETCH DOLLARS: Seniors
who tap into www.seniordiscounts.com are greeted with a database
of more than 150,000 bargains. An inexpensive annual fee enables
you to search for up-to-date senior discounts in more than 20 categories by city, state, or zip code, and a free weekly online newsletter.
There are items that are completely free for seniors too, such as a
pass that provides free lifetime admission to any national park or
monument. Senior Discounts Guide Book is also offered.
Oh No!!......Why was the program cancelled? Sometimes wonderful programs are cancelled because we all tend to wait until the last
minute to register. Please register early to avoid disappointment that
the program you wanted was cancelled, perhaps unnecessarily.

GOOD NEWS FOR SENIORS – HELP IS AVAILABLE TO BEAT THE
HIGH COST OF FOOD: The Food Stamp Program helps low-income
households purchase food. If you are a low-income senior (age 60
or over), you may now qualify for food assistance even if you own
a home or a car or have savings. Thanks to new changes to the
Food Stamp Program, assets are no longer considered for seniors
whose incomes fall within certain guidelines (for a person over 60,
the gross monthly income limit is $1,734 for one-person household
or for a two person household is $2,334). Seniors whose incomes
fall above the guidelines may still be eligible, but their assets will be
considered. Adults who are eligible for Food Stamp program receive
their benefits using a special Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.
Individuals can use their EBT card at grocery and retail food stores
across the state. If you have questions or need assistance, contact
Kathy or Melissa in the Outreach Department at 508-223-2235.
FARMERS’ MARKET COUPONS: Farmers’ Market Coupons will
be available at the Center on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am to
2pm. Starting in August. The coupons will be given to seniors who
are 60-years of age, receive fuel assistance, food stamps. MASS
Health, or live in Senior Housing. Don’t miss out if you meet the
criteria to qualify. If you have any questions or are unsure of your

YELLOW ALERT DAY – DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM FOR
SENIORS – Saturday, June 20, 9:00 am – 12 noon, South
Attleboro Fire Station, 1476 West St. Hopefully you have
never been in an automobile accident but if you have or know
someone who has, you will appreciate what the Yellow Alert
Program is all about. Joining the Yellow Alert Program can
save your life. The program consists of a yellow alert card
kept in the glove compartment of the car, that is similar to
the “file of life” The yellow card contains the driver’s medical
and health history including a list of medications, allergies etc.
Frequent passengers of the vehicle may also complete a card.
In the event of an accident, a special Yellow alert sticker on
the back windshield of the car alerts the local police and local fire department personnel that the life saving information
is in the glove compartment. The program is free. Police
and fire personnel will be available to assist with your card
and answer any questions. Call the Center to register. FREE
