Fools Rush In
Members of the Bald Hills
Fire Department participated
in an active shooter exercise
with Homeland Security Region 3. The exercise, called
‘Fools Rush In’, was held on
April 1st at South Puget Sound
Community College. Dozens
of agencies participated, including law enforcement, fire
and emergency services, dispatch, hospitals, emergency
management, airlift and
more. Bald Hills was involved
in planning and management,
as well as emergency response. The purpose of the
exercise was to train multiple
agencies to work side-by-side
to protect the public and
mitigate the hazard. This full
scale exercise was two years
in the planning and included
the involvement of 300 persons . Beverly Wright ~

The Duffys: (left) Our family believes strongly in the good
that an Explorer Post can do for our young people. My
son Shawn became involved with the Explorer Post
while my oldest daughter Becca volunteered as a responder. Jacob, the youngest, is now a Cadet with the
Bald Hills Explorer Post. My husband Mike is a firefighter with the department. I am the Treasurer of the Bald
Hills Firefighters Association and an Advisor with the
Explorer Post. Our family enjoys volunteering and giving
back to our community. Bobbie Duffy ~
The McMasters (right): Roger joined the fire department first and talked me into volunteering. Back then
being a volunteer was less complicated but training
was still a big part of our requirements. At one time
our son, Brandon, was with the department as well.
We both became EMT instructors and evaluators for
Thurston County Medic One and Wild Land Fire Training. Together we had the opportunity to fight wild
fires in Oregon. We became American Heart Association (AHA) instructors, eventually joining the faculty at
the training center. We continue to gather certifications and training in hopes that this will help us, the
department and our community. Diana McMaster ~

The Hardestys: (left to right) Cadets Joshua,
Zachary, Firefighter Will Hardesty and Cadet
Mason. I have always wanted to serve and
make a difference in my community. When my wife told me that the department was looking for volunteers I jumped at
the opportunity. The training was challenging
but being able to make a difference on
someone's "worst day" has been rewarding. I
am extremely proud that my boys are following in my footsteps. Will Hardesty ~
The Schmids (left): Separately we both had
been volunteers with our local fire departments
in our early 20’s and had taken away wonderful
memories from those experiences. In January
of 2009 we made it our New Year’s resolution
to give back some of our time and support our
local community by becoming volunteers. We
both became EMT’s and respond in one of the
EMS/Brush Trucks when there are emergencies.
It continues to be one of the best decisions
we’ve made and we will proudly continue to be
ready and available for our community when
needed. Diane Schmid ~

The Burgmans: (left) Firefighter George Burgman joined the Bald
Hills Fire Department years ago “to be of service to the community.”
He convinced his wife Erin
to join as an EMT so she
could “help with the medical
stuff.” Erin Burgman is now
a lieutenant with the Bald
Hills Fire Department. Lieutenant Burgman is shown

Have you wondered if that childhood dream of being a firefighter could still
come true? The answer is probably YES. Opportunities to volunteer with your
fire department do exist. You don't have to spend money, you don't have to
buy books, you just need to be willing to share your time with others working
to serve your community. We are
your neighbors, friends, and family
giving our time to learn skills and use
them to help take care of each other. The skills you will
learn will help you in your home, at work, even on vacation. You can be a Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), apparatus driver/operator, support systems
personnel and more. Choose one or more to fit your ambition. Sound exciting? It is! We meet every Tuesday
evening at 6:45pm. The first Tuesday we have an Association meeting and dinner. Please come by during the day
or any Tuesday night to learn more. Steven Slater ~
