YMCA of RAPID CITY
For over 70 years the YMCA of Rapid City has served the community by
providing programs and services to meet physical, social, mental and
spiritual needs. This rich history began with a small downtown building and
has expanded to a presence around the city. Today the YMCA of Rapid City
has grown to include the LaCroix Links Golf Course and three Youth Outreach
Centers in the community. You won’t need to look very far to see YMCA success stories
involving members of all ages. Stop in for a tour anytime and let us share the YMCA mission
with you.
YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs
that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
AREAS OF FOCUS
We are a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared
commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense
of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about
when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the
Y, strengthening community is our cause.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
SWIMMING LESSONS
Safety around water (saw)
As a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, the Y has been a leader in providing
swim lessons and water safety for more that 165 years. The YMCA of Rapid City continues to
help youth and adults experience the joy and benefits of swimming, so they can be healthy,
confident and secure in the water.
What have we added to our YMCA swim lessons? SAW components! Teaching children not only
to swim, but…in the event they fall in or get too far out, we are teaching them skills to “get back
to safety!” “Get out!”
Why have we added this SAW component?
Learning the Facts about Drowning
• Three children die every day as a result of drowning.
• Fatal drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury–related death for children
from 1-14 years old.
• Sixty percent of youth drowning incidents occur under adult supervision.
• Ten percent of youth drowning incidents occur within 10 feet of safety.
Understanding the Y’s Opportunity to Help
• There are more than 900 Ys in the 10,000 communities across the country.
• The Y owns and operates more swimming pools than any other organization in the country.
• In 2013, Ys delivered swim instruction to more than 1.2 million children.
• The Y engages 9 million youth in its programs annually.
The Safety Around Water program is built on a foundation of overall safety and risk prevention
that reflects the Y’s commitment to the well-being of all.
In addition to learning lifesaving water safety skills, children can increase their physical activity
by swimming. Swimming also motivates children to strive for self-improvement, teaches goal
orientation, and cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem. It also teaches life
lessons of sport and sportsmanship, so that children can learn to work well with teammates and
coaches and how to deal with winning and losing.
It’s time to focus on Keeping Children Safe Around Water!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
YOUTH SWIMMING LESSONS
YOUTH SWIM LESSONS
This progressive program is designed to help youth develop and improve water skills. Youth
will be taught at their own ability and “progressed up” when they have developed and mastered
all skills for their current level. To build self-esteem and maintain consistency, the instructors
will not progress any child before he or she is ready. Instructors of each level also use land and
water time to develop youth by increasing their safety knowledge in and around the water and
to promote healthy living now and in their future!
P - POLLIWOG
To complete this level, student will swim a rudimentary crawl stroke 20 feet comfortably, front
and back float 10 seconds each and perform other required skills.
G - GUPPY
To complete this level, student will swim 25 yards of crawl stroke while breathing to the side each
time. Tread water 1 minute, be comfortable in the deep water and perform other required skills.
M-MINNOW
To complete this level, student will swim 25 yards of “good form” crawl stroke (while breathing
to the side each time). Students will perform front dive and then swim 25 yards each of front
and back crawl. Survival float (relaxed) 3 minutes, and perform other required skills.
F - FISH
To complete this level, student will have required swims using front crawl, back crawl and breast
stroke. Endurance swims of 75 yards, treading water using arms only then legs only, survival
float 7 minutes, surface dive
FF/S-FLYING FISH/SHARK
These two levels are very stroke, endurance, and safety/rescue intensive. You may request a
progress report sheet from frances@rcymca.org to see the exact list of completion requirements.
It is important for children to be in the correct level. Please don’t guess. If your child is new to our
program, or you can’t remember what level they should be in, a quick email to frances@rcymca.
org will get you the answer generally within 24 hours. You may be asked to bring your child in
for an in-the-water evaluation. To eliminate the risk of your child being removed from the wrong
level, with no spots available in the correct level/time of your choice, please be sure you are
signing your child up for the correct level. Please refer to page 2 for details on our Transfer/
Cancellation policy. Make ups are not provided if your child is absent or if we are closed
due to weather.

GOLF
LaCroix Links Golf Course
We are now going into our 13th year operating and managing the LaCroix Links Golf Course and
our 12th year of programming with our youth golf program, The First Tee of Rapid City.
Following the course improvements that
were done in 2013, we will again be working
hard to make the YMCA LaCroix Links Golf
Course a nice place to enjoy a round of golf.
The fairways, greens and tee boxes were
in great shape last year partly due to the
improved irrigation system, and we look to
build on these improvements this summer.
As for GOLF: The LaCroix Links course is a 9
hole short course. Eight of the holes are par
3’s with distances from the shortest length
of 85 yards to the longest at about 170
yards. With the course improvements of 2013, the addition of a par 4 hole playing at over 260
yards from the back tees. And to make it more appealing, the addition of 4 sand traps to the
course presents even more challenges.
Then there is FOOTGOLF. Playing golf with a soccer ball? Imagine playing the golf course
from the regular tee boxes to a flag 170 yards away, but with a soccer ball. Yep, footgolf is
a marriage of golf and soccer, played just like a regular golf course with pars and birdies and
keeping score just like golf but instead of golf balls and clubs, you play it by kicking a soccer
ball into the hole with the least amount of kicks. Come out and try this new sport, it looks like a
lot of fun, and you don’t have to carry around that golf bag!

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
OUTREACH PROGRAMS AND SOCIAL SERVICES
OUTREACH CENTERS
The Outreach team believes that our centers are more than a drop-in recreation center for
the youth in our community. Our team’s focus is building positive relationships between
adults and youth through a variety of enriching and educational activities. Some of our
activities include: billiards, group games, arts and crafts, and cooking projects with a
nutritional emphasis. While these activities are fun and action packed, they are intended

YOUTH INSTITUTE MEDIA
Attention all students entering their 7th
through 10th grade years!
If you are living in the Rapid City
area, you can apply to the YMCA
Youth Institute. You’ll learn valuable
computer/multi-media skills, academic
skills, make new friends, and have a
camping team-building experience.
Upon successful graduation from the
eight-week summer program, you will
get to participate in the Year-round
Youth Institute program and various
service learning projects for your
community.
WORLD SERVICE
Did you know that the Y is in 119 countries? Like Ys in the U.S., Ys around the globe
respond to community need with programs and services that help people to reach their
full potential. Currently, we have partnerships with the YMCA in Sao Paulo, Brazil and
the Sioux YMCA in Dupree, SD. During the holiday season, YMCA members donated
over 60 Christmas presents to benefit the youth at the Sioux YMCA. The Y Art for
the Holidays, held every December, benefits this committee. The committee is always
looking for new and exciting ideas to strengthen the Y’s connection globally. For more
about World Service, contact Sara Hornick, Community Engagement Director, sara@
rcymca.org.
togetherhood
Togetherhood invites Y members to activate their social responsibility by participating
in the Y’s cause to strengthen community. Togetherhood provides Y members with fun,
convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors. This program
invites Y members to lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the
community where they live. The Togetherhood team has been busy this past year and has
the opportunity to do a food drive for the homeless students in the Rapid City Schools,
Coat Drive for Salvation Army’s Coats for Kids program, volunteered at Main Street Square
Kidz Zone, Clean Up Rapid City, and the Golden Valentine program. To find out more about
getting involved and volunteering, please contact Sara Hornick, Community Engagement
Director, sara@rcymca.org.

A Typical Day at Camp:
MEMORIES
THAT LAST A
LIFETIME
Camp, like many Y programs, is
about learning skills, developing
character and making friends. But
few environments are as special
as camp, where kids become a
community as they learn both
how to be more independent and
how to contribute to a group as
they engage in physical, social
and educational activities.
Camp teaches self-reliance,
a love for nature and the
outdoors and the development
of attitudes and practices that
build character and leadership.
Y counselors are dedicated to
making sure camp is an amazing
experience for every camper.

relationships between adults and youth through a variety of enriching

games, arts and crafts, and cooking projects with a nutritional emphasis.
While these activities are fun and action packed, they are intended to
teach social responsibility, relational boundaries, and life skills that
support the YMCA’s mission to promote Christian values to the youth
in our community.
The Outreach Department has three centers throughout the community
to provide activities and services to many youth from ages 6½ to 18

summer GOLF LESSONS
The First Tee
We are proud to continue our Youth Golf Program at the
YMCA as a Chapter of The First Tee. At The First Tee of
Rapid City, we believe that golf is more than just a game.
The program helps youth participants discover how the
skills essential to success on a golf course can help them
flourish in life. The First Tee has developed a Life Skills
Curriculum that teaches a series of important life rules that
are reinforced by teaching the game of golf. These skills include self management,
interpersonal communication, goal
setting, mentoring, and effective conflict
resolution. You can read about this
wonderful program by visiting The First
Tee Website at www.thefirsttee.org.
Participants can begin the program
starting at age 7 and all new participants
to the program will begin at a level called
PLAYer. At the end of each session age
appropriate participants are offered
the chance to test out of each level.
Graduates of that class will then enter
the level called Par with progression then to Birdie and eventually to Eagle and Ace.
Class sizes will be limited to the first 10 registered per class.
