Newsletter Of The Women`s Club Of Glen Ridge Women`s Club
Club Motto “We live not to ourselves alone; our work is life.” – Bailey Newsletter of the Women’s Club of Glen Ridge October/November 2008 Volume 51, Issue 1 Literature Department Monthly Meeting and Open House Tuesday, November 4th 1:00 PM Please join us at The Women’s Club on Tuesday, November 4th at 11:30 AM for lunch, poetry reading and discussion by Sally Bliumis-Dunn following at 1:00 PM. Ms. Bliumis-Dunn teaches Modern Poetry and Creative Writing at Manhattanville College. She received her B.A. in Russian language and literature from U.C. Berkeley in 1983 and her MFA in Poetry from Sarah Lawrence College in 2002. Her poems have appeared in BigCityLit, Lumina, Nimrod, The Paris Review, Prairie Schooner, Poetry London, RATTLE, Rattapallax, Spoon River Poetry Review and Chance of A Ghost, an anthology put out by Helicon Nine in 2005. In 2002 she was a finalist for the Nimrod/Hardman Pablo Neruda Prize. Her manuscript, Talking Underwater, which has been a finalist for The University of Arkansas Press' First Book Prize in 2006, a semifinalist for The Kenyon First Book contest in 2002, the Bright Hill Press in 2005 and a finalist for the Richard Snyder Poetry Prize from Ashland Press in 2006, was published by Wind Publications in 2007. Sally was one of three poets selected by the Library of Congress to read in their "Love Poems" reading last year. She lives in Armonk, New York with her husband, John. They share four children, Ben, Angie, Kaitlin and Fiona The luncheon will be catered by Church Street Kitchen. Cost is $23 for members and $30 for non-members. The poetry reading is free. Children’s Department Time For Tots: New Dates Added Time for Tots is an informal, monthly “playgroup” for young children and their caregivers. The Club supplies age-appropriate toys and crafts and the space to play, as well as free refreshments. You do not need to be a member of the Club to attend. Upcoming dates: October 16 and 23 (new), and November 13 and 20 (new). Time for Tots runs from 9:30 – 11:00 AM, and you can arrive or leave at anytime during these hours. We hope to see you! President’s Post Welcome back! That remark feels a bit old – it seems that we open the October newsletter the same way every year. However, this year is a little different. As you may have noticed, the issue you are holding is a quarterly edition of the Signpost, covering events in both October and November, with a “heads up” for some of the holiday events. This is one of several changes we are making in the way we communicate with one another, in hopes of being both more useful and more effective. However, we need everyone’s help. In an effort to be more “green” and reduce the amount of paper that we send out, we’ve asked each of you to indicate in your dues renewal form whether you prefer to receive information regarding upcoming events via email or by way of the traditional “bulk mailing” through the post office. About a third of you responded that you would prefer to rely on your computers for information, and will be taken off of the “paper members” list. Others don’t choose to use the computer, and will be receiving club news the same way you always have – through the mail. About half of you provided us with an email address, but made no indication whether you wanted to continue to receive paper mail as well. I’d like to ask each of you to consider each of these options as you receive information from the Club over the next few months, and let us know what you prefer. Our goal is to serve the membership. So, what is all this great information you’re going to be receiving, anyway? Well, the calendar is full and once again; there’s truly something for everyone. We now have four book groups, two in the day time and two in the evening. Short descriptions and the book selections for each group are posted on the web site and will be included in the monthly bulk mailing. All are welcome at any of these groups. If you see a book that you’ve read or that interests you, come! It’s a great way to meet other members and find people with common interests. Our monthly program meetings for the year are in place and look fabulous. This month we’ll enjoy a lecture on the Puritan influence on our nation. November’s Election Day meeting will feature a non-partisan poet and in December we’ll enjoy a musical presentation featuring a local swing duo. Each monthly program meeting is preceded by a luncheon at noon, for those who wish to come early and relax over a meal together. The business meeting and programs start around 1:00 for those who don’t have time for lunch. Make time on your schedule. You won’t be disappointed. We have an array of evening events scheduled as well. The first of November brings us The Marriage Cure, courtesy of the Drama Department. It’s New York quality entertainment with local convenience. The Social Committee will be offering Holiday Lights on November 15, to get us in the mood for the upcoming season. We’ve already enjoyed a book signing and discussion with Neil Baldwin and more authors are planned. Community Service is hard at work, providing opportunities for members to help those in need. We have Habitat for Humanity “Women Build” workdays scheduled, ongoing collection for the food pantry and our support for Babyland in Newark. Ways and Means is similarly busy, generating funds for both the Club and our benevolences. So, please take some time and look over all that we’re offering this year. It’s a great time to get involved! Prudence Younger Prudence Younger President Children’s Department (Continued from Page 1) As a “spin off” of Children’s Department programming, a book club for busy moms called “Novelties” will take place November 19th, 8:00 PM at the Club. The first selection is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Save the date for the 2nd annual Winter Wonderland holiday crafts festival on Saturday, December 13 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. And be on the lookout for upcoming information regarding our new Etiquette Classes, starting in January. Six hour–long classes will take place after school, culminating with a two-hour dinner to polish those new skills! Page 2 October/November 2008 Newsletter of The Women’s Club of Glen Ridge Community Service Department The Women’s Club of Glen Ridge supports The Human Needs Foods Pantry (www.HumanNeedsFoodPantry.com) and its various programs. The Pantry serves over 2,000 bags of groceries per month in the Montclair area to the elderly, the disabled, the unemployed and underemployed, single parents, the homeless and homebound, as well as others with food insecurities. Currently they are looking for non perishable food items for Thanksgiving dinners, specifically gravy, corn mixes, and anything other than turkeys for now. They are also accepting fall/winter clothing and coats (extra-large sizes are especially welcome) in clean, gently-worn condition. Members can drop off all items at The Pantry, 9 Label Street, Montclair on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. We also invite members to accompany the Community Service Department to the Habitat for Humanity Women Build Initiative at Habitat Newark. Established in 2003, the Initiative is currently 1/2 way towards raising $90,000 to sponsor (and build!) a second house for a deserving low income Partner Family. The dates are October 16, November 12, December 17. Members should call the Club office to reserve a space and will meet Barbara Weston and Anita Agarwal at 7:45 AM at the Club on the day of the event to car pool to the house site. Please remember that at a Habitat for Humanity worksite, you will be working under the guidance of professional construction forepersons and/or trained professional volunteers. The work on any given day depends solely on what the project calls for and can vary from framing to insulation to sheet rocking to siding to landscaping (and anything else that comes in between). You will be shown the proper way to do the job and the correct handling of the requisite tools, and you will never be asked to do something that you are not comfortable with. Additional information about the Initiative can be found at www.habitatnewark.org/women_build. We are pleased to welcome the following new members: Jodi Brooks (Brian) Aubrey Blanda (Philip) Karen Byerly (Kurt) Maura Colleary (Rob) Sandy Egan (Jeff) Lana Keppel (Tim) Eileen Laszlo (Andor) Tiffany Ludwig (Ryan) Linda Malik (James) Donna Murray (Guy) Renee Nichols (Nicholas) Mary O’Farrell (John) Gabrielle Olczak (Ted) Kristin O’Neil (Chris) Kim Patterson (Perry) Jayne Anne Phillips (Mark Stockman) Jennifer Pine (D.W.)
