Hello to all of you, my wonderful friends. It is such a treat to communicate with you,
share birth stories, pictures, elements of life that bring us so much joy and delight.
I love getting your notes on my e-mail, or snail mail, with the happy photos of your little
ones and their proud mamas and papas! Thank you for thinking of me as your babies grow. I
have in my Baby Memory what they look like when I last see them, which might be 6 to 8
weeks old. But all of a sudden, they’re 2 or 3 or 5, talking up a storm, showing the incredible
brilliance we always knew was waiting to dance on stage. And then they’re 22 and “all growed
up”, and occasionally, I have the awesome privilege of delivering some of those babies’
babies—which, of course, means that their mothers had good experiences, and they didn’t leave
town! What fun! I can’t imagine a more satisfying work—and I thank God daily for the
miracles I see, for the patience I witness, for the courage I observe, for the love that spreads
itself like sweet cream butter all over, for the cries of life that reverberate through the house and
send a welcoming cry to all who will hear. Just as much as we welcome these babies, they too
are saying to us, “Step up, Be a part of my life, Enjoy my emerging
future, Rejoice with my baby steps that grow into big shoes, Have
fun with all that I learn to do, Set me an example of Love and
Compassion and Courage and Faith,” --and you do! I love you all,
hope you enjoy this newsletter, write me when you can,

Natural Success Stories
Izzy has allergies. A bright, eleven-year-old girl who loves spending time with
her family and her pets, she is troubled by nearly constant congestion, decreased

A Final Family Note:
This year promises to be even more exciting than the last. I am overjoyed
to announce the upcoming arrival of our first child, a boy, later this
summer. My lovely wife, Beth, is showing more and more each day, and
every kick makes us that much more excited for his delivery. We are also
delighted to have our labor and delivery care in the extremely capable
hands of none other than your midwife, my mother, Nancy Spencer. What
better way to come full circle in a true family-practice setting!
Featured Recipe (from - Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair)
Salad:
• 1 red pepper – roasted, peeled, and cut into
strips
• 2 cups cooked black beans
• ½ cup cooked corn
• 1/3 cup chopped cilantro
Dressing:
• 2-3 cloves garlic – minced with a pinch of sea
salt
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 2 tablespoons lemon juice
• ¼ teaspoon cayenne
Santa Fe Black Bean Salad
Combine salad ingredients and set aside. Chop garlic and salt into a paste-like consistency. Mix garlic paste, oil, lemon juice, and cayenne. Drizzle over salad and
toss gently. Enjoy!
Dear Nancy,
Now that I am nearing the time to deliver my third (boy), it's about time I send you a little note of appreciation for all you have
done for my family. I truly thank you for being the most wonderful midwife anyone could ask for!
My hunt for the perfect midwife was very short. I asked two different people from a two different churches, who they
recommended. Your name was given by both. Then maybe a week later I was having my horses shoes done and my shoer
mentioned that you had delivered all three of his children some 15 or so years ago. I took this to mean that you were heaven
sent.
When I "hired" you I thought I was getting a great midwife. Little did I know that I was getting a medical community all in one
wonderful package! You have been so diligent to keep up on your knowledge and to stay informed on what's happening in the
medical world. It increased my trust and respect for you at once.
Your ability to deal with people on their level is so reassuring. I have seen you work with many different moms and they all
love you yet they are all so different.
When my sister and her husband decided to use you it was so fun to see how you treated her situation different than mine.
What I needed and what she needed were different but you knew that and treated us that way. What an amazing gift!
My two little boys have brought me so much joy and I know the next one will bring
additional doses of love into our household. I am so thankful that I get to have you
around for the wonderful occasion. My husband and I really do think you are the
best and we take every opportunity to brag about our awesome midwife, Nancy
Spencer!

We thank the Lord for increasing the size of our
family by giving us little Anastasia Grace. We went to
the midwife's Friday evening to see if Christina was
ready. After looking at her the midwife said that she
wasn't quite ready. Because the other 3 children were
already spending the night with my parents Christina
and I took the opportunity to go out for a little date.
When we got home Christina took a dose of castor oil
and by 5:45 am she was beginning to feel some light
contractions.
We got to the midwife's at about 7:00 am. After
receiving some antibiotics Christina was ready to go.
Her water broke at 7:50 am and by 7:54 she was
holding little Anastasia in her arms!
Both Christina and Anastasia are healthy and doing
well. We were able to come home after about 2.5
hours after the birth.

Disasters happen anytime and anywhere. And when disaster strikes, you may not have
much time to respond. A highway spill of hazardous material could mean instant
evacuation. A winter storm could confine your family at home. An earthquake, flood,
tornado or any other disaster could cut off basic services—gas, water, electricity and
telephones—for days.
After a disaster, local officials and relief workers will be on the scene, but they cannot
reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it may take days. Would your family be prepared to
cope with the emergency until help arrives? Your family will cope best by preparing for disaster before it strikes.
One way to prepare is by assembling a Disaster Supplies Kit. Once disaster hits, you won’t have time to shop or
search for supplies. But if you’ve gathered supplies in advance, your family can endure an evacuation or home
confinement.
Government officials are warning that Americans should all be prepared to survive for at least 72 hours on their
own following a national or local emergency.

My entire pregnancy and labor process was
swaddled in blessings. And with each new
pregnancy story I hear, especially regarding first time
moms, I realize how truly blessed I was (and still am).
Words
simply
can’t
describe
my
thankfulness and gratefulness that came with this
child.
My first blessing came in the form of a free
ultrasound. My husband and I are still newlyweds
(married as of February of ’05), and as typical of most,
don’t have a lot of money. But through a friend my
husband met at work, we were able to see our baby
for the first time when she was only 14 weeks old. A
small
little
miracle
growing right
inside my belly. Psalm 139 says, “I will Praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” This
couldn’t be more true! My husband and I weren’t the only ones to share the wondrous event, however.
My parents, not knowing about the ultrasound, stopped by our house due to terrible traffic. And, of
course, were beyond excited to accept the invitation to see their first little grandbaby.
Coupled with a small income, my husband and I had no health insurance. But through some
searching, I found, applied, and was accepted for maternity support through DSHS. And to my joy, I
discovered that Nancy supported women on this type of coverage. It wasn’t just that I wanted a
midwife, but Nancy was a familiar face who had delivered my two youngest brothers. I was so grateful,
and of course, still am!
For the first three months of pregnancy, most women are plagued with varying degrees of
morning sickness. Once again, I count my blessings as I recall minimal nausea. Not once did I wake up
feeling the need to expel my stomach contents. In actuality, my whole pregnancy was pretty smooth
sailing. I experienced no edema, back pain, or fatigue throughout the entire nine months. Though I
have to admit, there were times I complained about having a big belly, and being limited on what I
could do. But there was really no need! Blessing after blessing was bestowed upon me, for which I am
beyond thankful.
Although February sixth was my predicted due date, I’d heard that most babies weren’t born on
the expected day, with the majority of firstborns being late. Yet for reasons more than belly discomfort
and excitement on seeing our little girl, both my husband and I were praying she would come early.
My sister was leaving for Japan one day after my due date and would be gone a full year, unable to
meet her niece until she returned. I asked everyone to pray she would arrive sooner than the sixth,
while my sister started a prayer chain. On February first God answered our prayer, beginning with
my water breaking at 12:30 at night. By this point the pessimist in me thought that because I had such
an amazing pregnancy, my labor would be terrible; I couldn’t have the best of both worlds. But
apparently good birthing genes run in my family, which is laymen terms for good pelvic size and big
hips. For the first six and a half hours of labor my contractions felt like strong menstrual cramps,
allowing me to joke around, perform squats, and call people; pretty much anything except sleep. It
wasn’t until we arrived at Nancy’s where she confirmed a three centimeter dilatation, that they became
more intense. And here’s where another blessing pops in. No more than three hours passed before I
was dilated to eight centimeters, and ready to push the baby out, which itself lasted a mere fifteen
minutes. As of today, I found out that two of my younger brothers were praying for both me and their
niece every night. God answered their prayers of a short, not too painful labor experience.
The blessings continue day by day. This miracle called life never ceases to amaze
me. Every hiccup, cry, smile, and poopy diaper reminds me of God’s amazing creation. I
wake up each morning with a beautiful daughter and thank Him for every single
blessing.

Toddler Treat: Fruity Quinoa Breakfast Cereal
Coffee Filter Butterflies
Warm breakfast cereals are a great start on a cold winter
morning. Quinoa cooks quickly which makes it a perfect
choice for breakfast. It's also packed with nutrition that
will energize your child for a busy day.
Hang these butterflies by the antenna with fishing line from a
paper plate punched with holes. Paint a sky with clouds on
the plate to make your butterflies look like they are flying.

1/2 cup quinoa
1 cup water
1/4 cup diced apples
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Milk
Maple Syrup
In a saucepan add quinoa and water and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Add apples and cinnamon; cover and simmer until water is absorbed (about 10 more minutes). Serve with milk and
sweeten to taste with maple syrup.
Makes 4 toddler or 2 adult servings.

Black chenille stem
Paper coffee
filter
Water color
paints
Paint brush

Wire cutters
Needle nose
pliers
How To Make It
1. Cut the black chenille stem in half. (You will only use 1
piece for this project)
2. Using water color paints, paint the coffee filter. Let dry.
3. Fold the black chenille stem in half.
4. Twist the bent end about 1/2" from the bend.
5. Accordion pleat the coffee filter in about 1/2" pleats.
6. Slide the butterfly in-between the black ends of the
chenille stem.
7. Twist the black chenille stem above the butterfly to hold
it in place.
8. Separate the ends of the black chenille stem.
9. Bend one end of the black chenille stem over about 1/4".
Bend again.
10. Repeat with other end. This makes the antennas.
11. Fan out the butterfly's wings.
12. If desired, hang with yarn or fishing line to make a
mobile as described above.

When I found out I was pregnant this time it was so special.
This is what we call our angel baby. I lost my only daughter July
14 2005 who was 2. My husband and I were done having babies
we had 3 boys 1 girl and felt complete. After a lot of prayer, 6
months after we lost our baby girl we knew our baby days weren’t over! It took us about 5 months to finally get pregnant. We
knew we could never replace our daughter and never hope too.
We just knew there was another spirit who needed to join our
family.
Nancy has delivered 4 out of 5 of my babies. Each and every experience has been fabulous. I guess as
fabulous as laboring can be….Nancy was so great during so many of my appointments I would be
crying and feeling like this was my first baby again, she believed in me and gave me the confidence I
needed to be a mommy of a newborn again.
I was due Feb. 2 and was desperately wanting a baby in February, my has parents have 24 grandkids
and not one birthday in February. So, I wasn’t wanting to go early. In the past the idea of going early
was exciting, but even then, I still never did. In fact, I already had 2 babies on their due date. As I
started into my weekly visits I knew that at some point Nancy was going to want to check me. But, I
wouldn’t let her touch me until we were in Feb. So Feb. 1st I finally let her check me. She said to me
when we were done, “Deanna, when ever you’re ready to have this baby, you can have this baby” I said
back to her “what does that mean” She laughed and said “Honey, your ready!” I had already decided
that I was going to just let my body do its thing and I did. I went to bed and by 2:45am Feb 2nd I had
1 hard contraction that woke me up, I started timing them to make sure they were consistent. By 3:40 I
woke up my husband and asked him to time me to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind. He jumped out
of bed got in the shower; we gathered up the boys and headed to Nancy’s by
4:10 am. We arrived to Nancy’s and by 4:30 my water broke. At 5:00 and I
delivered our angel at 5:55am. Dallis Olivia weighed in at 8’3 and was 21
inches long. She has brought our family much joy and we are grateful for the
opportunity to have her in our home, how lucky we feel!!
One of the funniest things about having our boys with us was my 7 year old
who is so impatient says to me in the middle of a contraction, “mom, what are
we waiting for?” Boy, did it lighten the mood. They all loved that they got to
be part of the miracle.
I am so grateful for Nancy, her calmness and love radiates the whole time you
are laboring. Having Nancy as midwife is such wonderful gift, but having her
as a friend is a blessing!!
