T
hree self-guided tours enable you to find many of the most
beautiful views and interesting historical sites in the area.
We recommend you take a picnic lunch, take your time, and
relax as you take in the breathtaking views, peaceful forests, and
serene wildlife that are unique to the Ozarks.
Salem is a natural stop for visitors to Montauk State Park or
the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Many floaters and
fishermen have discovered the advantages of enjoying the State
and National Parks during the daytime, and then enjoying the
amenities and activities available in Salem.
Salem offers guests comfortable lodging, a variety of great
restaurants, and scores of recreational opportunities.
Salem's Historical Walking Tour project
includes a 40-block tour that starts at the
Dent County Courthouse lawn and journeys
through the main business section along
Fourth Street, down MacArthur Avenue through
the historic area where
many homes still exist.

Montauk Mill still houses much
of its original equipment. Free
guided tours are available on
weekends.
Part of the Ozark National
Scenic Riverways, Devil’s Well
Cave is considered a “Karst
Window” and admission is free
to the public.
The Commons fairground is
home to rodeos and riding
competitions, and hosts
numerous community events and
festivals each year.
Dillard Mill State Historic Site
interprets one of Missouri’s
best-preserved, water-powered
gristmills.
Horse trails and hiking trails
are abundant in the area, with
hundreds of miles of scenic
beauty to be explored.
Antique and collectible
enthusiasts can find many
treasures in area antique and
gift shops.
The unique mix of Ozark
hardwood forests, grass lands,
and remote streams is prime
habitat for wild turkeys.
The Current River provides
a wonderful environment for
families to enjoy the sites and
sounds of nature.
The trout hatchery at Montauk
State Park provides excellent
fishing for serious anglers.
Montauk Lodge also offers a full
service restaurant and fishing gear.
Spring Creek Golf Club features
a beautiful nine-hole course in a
lush Ozark setting, and is open
to the public.
The scenic highways in the Salem area offer spectacular views
of autumn foliage from mid-October through November.
The Dent House is a privately-owned residence and is home to
a collection of antiques that can be viewed by appointment.
The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center hosts a variety of
free exhibits. The exhibit shown was produced by the Smithsonian
Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood draws professional racers and
road rally enthusiasts from around the world each February.

Pond, Pulltite Spring, Ozark National
Scenic Riverways, Current River,
Round Spring, Alley Spring and
more.
Forest Tour includes Mark Twain
National Forest, Dillard Mill, Red
Bluff, Indian Trail Forest and The Trail
of Tears.
The beautiful Victorian courthouse, which is listed in
the National Registry of Historic Places, was built in
1870 for $15,500.
Round Spring is a sink hole and
is part of the Ozark National
Scenic Riverways. The National
Park Service offers guided tours
of Round Spring Cave.
Missouri Conservation Areas,
State and National Forests,
and the Ozark National Scenic
Riverways comprise thousands
of acres of area lands.

here’s always something to look forward to in the Salem
area. The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood attracts racing
enthusiasts from around the world each February. The first of
March is traditionally opening day for trout season at Montauk
State Park. Turkey hunters flock to the area in the spring and fall
to bag trophy gobblers, and the warmer weather brings floaters
and campers to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Salem
celebrates the 4th of July with a hometown parade second to
none and one of the largest fireworks displays in the region.
Deer hunting, the Fall Festival, and numerous cultural activities
accompany the return of autumn color.

Cave, Cedar Grove and Montauk
